Someone in the comments said they thought the horn solo in the second movement was bad. I have to disagree! I think it was superbly done. The tempo is quite slow and he really carried the phrase and gave it motion, one of the hardest things to do. I have played this piece many times and I think all of the woodwind playing was first rate, which is to be expected from this orchestra.

Given that the 2nd movt. is more or less the most emotionally convincing piece of art produced by a human, your mentioning of the 3rd comes off more or less as treason. To the Gulag!

People complain (rightfully) about conductors who wave their hands needlessly as if dancing... with Maestro Honeck I don't think this is the case. Everything he does seems to be calculated to have an effect on the sound (or some other aspect of the performance) without any unnecessary movements. This to me is the sign of a truly great conductor. I also love the elegance and grace with which he addresses the audience and musicians before, during and after the concert. Incredible

And to think that Tschaikowsky was not happy with this work and thought it inferior! It is a masterpiece - and masterful delivered here! This even tops my beloved Karajan recording! A big BRAVO to the hr-Sinfonieorchestra and Manfred Honeck conducting!
He later changed his mind about the merit of his 5th. The work was having very successful premiers all over Europe which led Tchaikovsky to reexamine his assessment of his symphony.

And then Whoa Nelly, (like a horse suddently shooting off at full speed) the piece explodes into high drama in the most inventive way. Bravo Tschaikovsky. What a great performance.
I must have stayed with my so called "old reference recordings" too long. I was suprised that an orchestera from Franfurt could play this good! This video and others made me think i should attend more concerts. These players and conductor sound as good as Berlin phil under Karajan or Lennningrad phil under Mravinsky. I had the privilege of playing this with my youth orchestra more than a decade back. This was one of the very first symphonies that I played. Since I was sitting in the back of the 2nd violin section, I was adjacent to the brass and winds. It was a magical experience indeed.

Thank you, Maestro Honeck! You've made a 63-year-old thrill once again to a familiar lifetime-favorite. The clarity of enunciation in the orchestration makes me imagine that Tchaikovsky heard it in his head this way. And I finally understand how the Waltz fits in with the other three movements. Bravo!
Somewhere in the comments I offered to a reply about Honeck's "magic" with his hands and baton. The baton is the extension of his soulful interpretation. His passion and that of any orchestra that I have heard him conduct are inspiring. I found a good interview with him "living the classical life" in which he embellishes the use of the hands and body language of himself in his position and the importance of being a part of the orchestra. This is an amazing interpretation and like me, I am sure that you are aware that he does not need to flip score pages but every moment he is with the orchestra. I particularly enjoy watching his engagement in the beginning of the movements with the tempo and upbeats. Thank you.
This could be my favorite performance of No 5 so far! Thank you for uploading and sharing! Mr. Honeck's amazing! I am also surprised to find the orchestra set pretty close to the audience, what a bunch of lucky people!

Beautiful and despairing at the same time. Sublime use of emotion. Makes you ache.
IMO this is the best recording of this symphony that exists. This orchestra was flawless. Virtuosic. Incredibly high level, I don't think it's ever been done better.
Karajan, Mravinsky, Bernstein, Stokowski, Markevitch done it better.
The bernstein Version that is also on YT gets me a bit more in the intro especially
💯 agree.
Perfect tempo choices, impeccable transitions, awesome ensemble. Solos, just fantastic.
_Has to be the best performance ever! When I was a kid, I would listen to it at night over and over on KQED. Heard the Boston Symphony live back in 1976 perform it live. Was, is, and will always be my favorite!_ 😍
One of the very first LPs I bought many years ago. I think that of all the Tschaikowsky symphonies this is the most balanced and heartfelt.
And I might add that it is very much like life with its ups and downs and triumphs.
a few years ago in our youth orchestra this symphony was basically all we ever talked about. Definitely one of my first symphonies I kept listening to over and over. Mind you, it's much easier with Spotify and RUclips now. I saw this performed in Nottingham last year, was a huge moment for me :)
Yes sir!
I heard the BSO play this gem in August this year. I had heard the french horn solo before but never the whole piece. I closed my eyes and could feel the tears falling down my face it was that beautiful to witness in person
I don't know classical music that well but I love this French horn solo, I like this Tchaikovsky piece, it's all so beautiful, I'm very impressed....
You should listen more to classical music. It’s life changing.

Wunderbare Melodie, in beiden Versionen
One of the most romantic symphonies.
I agree.
Bassoon mom891 Where Marc Gruber scores in this and other HR videos is what I would call "lightness of touch." I think he's excellent.

I thought it was top notch-- if I had to find something I'd say he wasn't quite with the conductor in the last bars, but at that point you're lucky your brain is working at all.

Rehearsal letters on sheet music to divide sections, have no effect on the music but handy to use during rehearsal. The Italian terms announce change in tempo.
@@ethodda thank you very much 👍
The emotion in this symphony is INCREDIBLE!! I have always loved and admired the way Tchaikovsky projects what he puts on the page. I one day hope to play this piece live
The Waltz is phenomenal. The body movement really rounds out the rich tone with some playfulness. Made my day.
Amazing how this waltz fulfills the promise made by the waltz in the Third Symphony!
Given that the 2nd movt. is more or less the most emotionally convincing piece of art produced by a human, your mentioning of the 3rd comes off more or less as treason. To the Gulag!
@@netizencapetI agree with you about the second movement! As far as the waltz is concerned, I was only trying to highlight the degree to which Tchaikovsky had developed his art between 1876 and 1888! No offense meant, quite the contrary!

THIS PERFORMANCE IS ABOUT AS GOOD AS IT GETS, & THE SOUND IS PHENOMENAL. AS FOR TCHAIKOVSKY'S MUSIC... GODLY.
That, my friends, is a work of pure genius. To compose music at that level is almost impossible for us poor mortals. A wonderful performance makes it even more impressive. Nice job Manfred.
Tchaikovsky's pieces never ceases to amaze me, all his works will resonate in my head until death parts my memory.
This is wild. The texture and intensity of Tschaikowsky is amazing.
I know of no other composer that elicits such raw emotion from his compositions. This symphony is a masterpiece and it is played with wonderful precision. The Frankfurt Radio Symphony never disappoints!
Brahms easily does it.

@@johnwiese6760 No, dear John the word Чайковский doesn't need Tch ; its sound is only "Ch". To write it with Tch is absolutely not necessary for the sound goes exactly with Ch in English. Yet I have seen it written even Tsch for other languages in which maybe the sound must be like that. But certainly not in English, Spanish or any other romance language. As I know Russian I know it.
@@johnwiese6760 have you read my explanation?
Alvaro García yeah
@@johnwiese6760 Thanks! I hope I've been helpful in some way.
I hadn't heard the piece in a long while. Loved it, then got tired of it. With fresh ears, I have to say, that horn player's tone was extraordinary. I wouldn't mind being his next door neighbor.
❤😂🎉😮😅😊 Thanks to Tchaikovsky and all of you. At time I lost grips over my head, when I discovered to listen him I really recovered a lot. Many many thanks. Wish you all a very nice and prosperous future.
Goodness me 😮😮😮 what inspired mad genius Pyotr Tchaikovsky to compose this triumphant symphony! Absolutely free reins of emotions, raw, yes, heart on sleeve! His compositions really bring out all the passion and skills of the orchestra 🤯💥 how skillful are these artists to bring to life the robust spirit of of his music! Bravo everyone! 🔥👏👏👏👏
I've loved T's music all of my life. 5th Symphony is probably my favorite of his compositions. Had never seen/heard this performance before and sorry it took me so long to do so. Excellent.

A DIVINE interpretation, in every respect! I'm in love with Honeck's tempi and dynamics!
Absolutely!!
Incredible
I thought that his sixth symphony was the most beautiful one... now I don't know. Very difficult to decide, really easy to apreciate both!
But the 4th symphony tho 👏👌
Today I put the 5th over the 6th. Don't know why...
I think I like all of the symphonies! But to me the 5th is the best
GRACIAS !!! Saludos desde España.

I can't describe how wonderful this symphony is. It's just full of colours, the melody, just bright in colours
He has performed this work many times, but this Frankfurt performance was just the best ever, so exciting and romantic, and weren't the orchestra thrilled also? Bravo to all.

Of course, Tchaikovsky's 5th symphony is a sublime masterpiece at anyone's hands.
Wonderful hats off to every artist in hr symphony orchestra, great.
Meesterlijk!!!
Exactly the performance i was looking for! The sonorité, the energy, the horn, bassoon and clarinet solos in the second movement... just wow. In my opinion one of the best if not even THE best performance here on RUclips!

T. is such a master of setting you for a big surprise. The opening of the 4th movement is truly drab and boring. It makes you feel like taking out the newspaper and reading the obituaries. And then Whoa Nelly, (like a horse suddently shooting off at full speed) the piece explodes into high drama in the most inventive way. Bravo Tschaikovsky. What a great performance.
Tchaikovsky composed such elegant, majestic music!

I played the second movement in a high school district orchestra and I specifically remember the director telling the strings that the audience shouldn't be able to tell exactly when the first chord began, that's how soft it should be.

This symphony is a wonderful example of how a master of composition can create greatness out of the mundane. I'm talking about the theme on which the whole work is based - it's really a rather trite series of notes, but Tchaikovsky transforms it into something magical.
Wth are you talking about?
@@karllieck9064 The fact that the 8-note theme which opens the symphony is hardly a piece of sparkling melodic invention, now is it? Duh, da-da duh, da-da duh, duh.

This is one of my all-time favorite pieces of all (heck, it is my favorite piece, tied with Schumann's 4th) - that overwhelming sense of melancholy throughout the piece, fused with the happier parts...my, it's been nearly 7 years since I played it (the second violin part), but there are parts of it that still give me chills.
Thank you.
