1956 Aston Martin DBR1: A British Racing Rarity

- This week, in partnership with RM Sotheby’s, we go for a lively ride in one of Britain’s (if not the world’s) most beautiful automobiles: an Aston Martin DBR1.
One of just five hand-built DBR1s produced, this example is particularly significant due to it being the very first one made, in addition to it being the same model, though not the exact car, that earned Aston Martin an overall Le Mans victory and a worthy motorsport legacy. Obviously, a car of such importance requires expert narration, and we were lucky enough to get the perfect man for the job: Stephen Archer.
Mr. Archer, a veteran Aston Marin racer since the late ‘70s, is the official Aston Martin Works Historian. Aston Martin Works is the historic home of the brand, and has a history of its own that is almost six decades in the making, so it goes without saying Stephen knows a thing or two about the cars.
Stephen retells DBR1/1’s most memorable moment, a tale that places near the top of the all time greatest racing stories. “Come '55, John Wyer and David Brown decided to produce a racing car that'd finally take the fight properly to the opposition,” Stephen tells, “[And] right from the outset, the DBR1 was to prove itself an incredibly competent racing car. And yet it was designed by a tiny team led by one man, Ted Cutting, who designed the chassis, the engine, and the beautiful, beautiful body that epitomizes racing Aston Martins.”
“Come 1959, the team of Aston Martins went on, of course, to win Le Mans-in fact, they took first and second. But why is this car, DBR1/1, so important if it wasn’t the winning car? Well, just three weeks before Le Mans was the 1,000 Kilometers of the Nürburgring and the factory wasn't going to enter a car there-the target was to win Le Mans-but Stirling Moss
said, ‘Look we've won this race twice, we can win this race again. Just let me take the car there,’ and John Wyer agreed.”
With a five minute and five second lead earned by the 17th lap, it appeared Moss was right: a third victory was not only possible, but apparently a stroll in the park for the legendary wheelman-but another tale of that man winning a race that wouldn’t make for a truly great story, would it? All was smooth sailing until Sterling pitted for a pilot changeover, handing over the helm to his co-driver Jack Fairman, who unfortunately ended up putting the car in a ditch.
Incredibly, Jack-being quite a brawny man apparently-was able to single-handedly push DBR1/1 out of said ditch and continue on, but the accident was not without seemingly grave consequence. The mishap severely cost the team position, knocking their comfortable spot with a five minute lead all the way back to fourth place. They were down, but far from out.
“Driving like a man who had an appointment with a checkered flag,” Moss miraculously secured first again. “It was Stirling Moss's finest ever drive. He jumped in, and won by a huge margin, which was undoubtedly DBR1/1's finest hour, but it also set them up to compete in the world championship,” Stephen explains.
The Aston Martin team went on to win the 1959 24 Hours of Le Mans, achieving north of 175mph down the Mulsanne Straight in the DBR1s, lap after lap for 24 hours. The car was pure speed sorcery in the late ’50s, and it hasn’t lost a bit of magic since.

I was lucky enough to be driven round the Goodwood circuit, as a 10 year old in 1959, by Roy Salvadori. We did three laps - an out lap an 'on it' lap and an in lap (no real difference in speed as I remember!) drifting around every corner. Extraordinary and a never to be forgotten memory as I write this over 60 years later!
Fantastic! I was fortunate enough to just talk to him between his stints in a 24-hour race in 1985. He autographed that classic photo of him drifting an Aston Martin around a right hander in a magazine race report. When I presented it, he said, "That's a popular one!"
Thanks once again for making me crave something I can't have!
so true
This whole Petrolicious thing is very painful to watch.. I would own every car they're ever made a video on!
My thoughts exactly. My wife's new Honda Jazz doesn't appeal as much anymore.😜
Sure you can, it's for sale!
You can buy one, but they're very expensive
Not to take anything from Sterling they forgot to mention a little old chicken farmer from Texas won some races in this car
mzondi1970 "...who took nitro glycerine pills to keep his heart going."
mzondi1970 They have to make sure their bigoted little anglo racers are put ahead of everyone else.
That was my favorite part too, seeing Carol Shelby. Just think, doctors told him in 1960 he'd be dead by 1962 and couldn't drive. Well he got a heart transplant and drove wickedly until the day he died, including doing over 200mph in a production GT500, just weeks before dying. To people my age, Carol Shelby wasn't just a hero and legend but a true ICON.
anybody that drove those cars back then had more balls then any of us combined, bias ply tires, mostly drum brakes, riding on gas tanks and they went like hell with very little safety gear
Roy Salvadori was the principal driver in the '59 Le Mans race. Shelby always said "The year I won Le Mans" while Salvadori always said "The year Carrol Shelby and I won Le Mans". It says a lot about both men. They died within a few weeks of each other.
Normaly I like italian race cars the most, but this DBR1 is just a stunning beautiful and perfectly ingeriered machine!
So fresh and so clean clean
I wish i could find my Aston Martin DBR1 Matchbox again
how can you give this a thumbs down,Thumb up from me, Thanks petrolicous
Now this car is a dream... well done...!
even before the video started, I liked just simply Aston Martin.
shreyash tannu i
Your INCOMPETENCE knows no bounds.......
"appointment with a checkered flag"
LeMans is still the best race in the world! The best cars in history were built for LeMans.
man I swear...every video on this channel is pure artwork. Thanks for another AWESOME car vid.
Production of these videos are immaculate!!! Another story well told and preserved. Thank you!!!
Magnificent car.
Gorgeous video.
Best in class filming & editing.
You've done it once again Petrolicious. Stunning!
greetings from Germany
Way to hype it up before auction.
This guy gets it
Yeah, I don't need more people trying to outbid me dang it.
Like this car needs it?
can't believe it got sold for over 22M.
Yeah, way to go. No sarcasm on my end, don't know what you meant! It's smart...lol
I'm in love.
dare i say it might be better-looking than a testarossa...
I agree with you Dalton. The only classic racer that - in my opinion - can be compared with this stunning beautiful AM, is the 1959 Maserati Tipo 61 ("Birdgage"). Some 9 months ago Petrolicious made a fantastic video about this car!
NO Dare it is a fact ..Beautiful car for sure .....sadly today with the need to stay relevant and in the market Aston martin has become just a shadow of it's former self ...I have heard that some of the later models use Range Rover V8 engines and Volvo electronics ....Pffft..!
@@shakespeare_hall4788 Unfortunately, for enthusiasts of this era, modern automobile design has been overwhelmed by overbearing governmental intrusion. Its inception was most noticeable in the mid/late 1960s and since then, has only been picking up speed. There's a reason the cars prior to the encroachment of computers & safety equipment are so pursued today.
@@MrGaryGG48 correct!
It is an amazing car....but you can't take anything away from Sir Sterling Moss......he is absolutely fearless behind the wheel of any car....
Fantastic car and story including the irreplaceable legend that is Sir Sterling moss bravo!!
The DBR1 is a beautifully balanced, elegant and understated sportscar. It looks as though it could win Le Mans while driver and passenger dine on game pie and scrumpy from a picnic basket 😂
Sir Stirling Moss.... when the word is bandied about so carelessly, Stirling is the real thing - a bona fide racing 'legend'.
it's right up there with the XKSS for sexiest car
To be fair I think most people would agree That Sir Stirling's greatest victory was the 1955 Mille Miglia in the equally beautiful Mercedes 300 SLR.. Taking nothing away from his win at Nurburgring, he was after all the best sports car racer of the time, probably of all time!
This is a proper racing car
No high tech tat
Just a wheel, a body, a set of wheels and a beautiful 3.0L straight six by British Engineers
Films like this make my heart ache. The aesthetics, the sound, the history - everything about this car is special. So, so amazing.
This was the car I salivated over when I was 11 or 12 years old - and is still probably my all-time favourite sports racing car.
Fantastic!
For one more time you have created a masterpiece. Hats off for your video and the excellent presentation of the story.
Bloody intrusive musick!
You kind of glossed over the fact that the 1959 Le Mans was won be an american in this car, Carrol Shelby!
ma che cazzo!!!! è un opera d arte!!!! wooowww
HYSTERICLY LOUD MUSIC as always! Can hardly hear what the guy is saying.... :-(
I believe one of the drivers of the LeMans winning car in 59 was one Carroll Shelby
Absolutely stunning car. Yet we have people that drool over their white Q7 ;)
Wow beautiful car. Imagine doing 175 in that lil thing. Sheesh!
As usual, a great document from Petrolicious ! BUT, sorry to say, the music is much, much too loud. We cannot hear the comments! Too late to turn it down a bit ??
Absolutely stunning. Magnificent to look at and I'm sure equally magnificent to drive. With an fascinating history there's good reason to believe this car will set records when it hits the auction block next week. Petrolicious at it's best!
After the week I've just had, that was just the tonic I needed. Thank you Petrolicious. My Friday evening is better now. Have a great end to the week ROW
How do you become a car historian?
Tristan Page: like most things in the automotive world, start off rich, market yourself well, cheat wherever and whenever possible and then pat yourself on the back a lot. Bonus points if you can avoid touching a wrench while doing all that and still pass yourself off as a "car guy." Not knowing how to drive stick will also probably help in the current environment. Posing as a vegetarian feminist might help you along with the sponsors and manufacturers. Burn three joss sticks in front of a framed picture of Elon Musk every second Thursday of the month, put a deposit down for an Elio, punch one of your producers and whatever you do, make sure you control the TV rights.
it's a damn side easier today than ever. Do some videos testing some of the simpler classics around, stick the videos on RUclips, and build a following to a point where you can approach owners of better classics.
Was fortunate enough to behold DBR1/3 in the metal and it literally took my breath away. Stunning doesn't begin to describe these cars.
one of the most beautiful cars ever made
From 3rd gear to 2nd with a squeak. I like it.
Beautiful automobile 💖
Great car sorry to see it in the us
great car,,,I miss those days....
All Petrolicious Films are great, but this one is the best, with one of the best cars ever built! Thank you!
HOW is it one of the best ever built??? Details, please!!!!
Its sooooo beautiful! Thank you Petrolicious, you've done it again!
Best car channel on RUclips. #DriveTastefully
Superb little video Petrolicious, one of your best!
3:08 It's Carrol Shelby!
That is such a beautiful car
Gloves looked cheap. Like 40p picking gloves. Such car is asking for soft leather ones....
He kinda needs grip on the wheel so
seeing as how it's his DBR1 he's wheeling around in "40p" gloves, i think he spent his money where it counts
Excellent!
Such a beautiful thing...
20 Million was a bit Out of budget!
I'm glad I found this; actually, it somehow found me; but, anyways, I was watching some Ferrari answer to the GT-40.
I can't wait to go through and learn what I can from all kinds of cars that were before my time, and that I haven't learned about. I mean I'm amazed at all the classic cars on the road my dad can tell you what it is.
My dad's father raced this for the Southern California sports car series before it went bye bye. I think it was mostly a 1950s racing series. He also raced Lotus7's, and Ferrari TestaRosas.
This video gave me chills!
All the old race cars are definitely my favorites of what you film.
Another superb video of a great car.. Well done Petrolicious!
Thank you. Well done, as usual... beautiful car, beautiful presentation, beautiful setting, lovely use of period film footage with contemporary video. But the product leaves me a little emotionally flat... the narrator gives an excellent and energetic survey of Aston Martin racing history.. I'm glad the introduction comes right up front, Steve has great 'news reporter' delivery and personality - but I think I prefer your productions with the owner's personal touch, and a car like this might deserve to be filmed in its 'native' environment. I am nonetheless grateful for the work you share.. a brilliant car with in-depth background.
"Driving like a man with an appointment with a checkered flag... and he doesn't want to be late"
somebody should make cars like that using todays regular car parts so they could sell them cheaply....its beautiful
They should remake the body style and modernise it with all the bells and whistles but keep the looks. Same for Jag E type and GTO 250 all beautiful and out of reach for 99% of humans
is that caroll shelby at 3:08
Yes
Side profile on this car makes your heart ache at the thought that something so beautiful will never be made again
Another EPIC video!!!! And it was made even better by the clip of Carol Shelby winning at Le Mans.
Yeah but... nice to show a couple of seconds of him, but to not speak his name?
Yeah but... nice to show a couple of seconds of him, but to not speak his name?
Beautifully shot as always. You should have that gentleman back, very entertaining character, and a knowledgeable chap
Music down, voice up!
Where was this filmed? Looks like somewhere in California
If you love the DB1, you might want to look up the very limited DB2S. A much more Aston Martin Aston Martin than the DB1.
Great video...again. I may not always favor the cars that you choose, but I always appreciate the quality of your work.
Amazing. Hope some day I could achieve the cinematography quality
Beauty!
Gorgeous.
Aston production cars fell off . Looking more like Ford Fusions than Aston’s…
Bri'ish?
only channel on YT i can like before i watch the video! like allways top!
Hello everyone, my question is: Is there a company or workshop that produces such or similar car models as replicas. today?
Beautiful car and a Beautiful video, Thankyou.
Great video, great car, and a great story. But, I could barely hear the man speaking due to the music being played in the first 2 minutes. Maybe tone it down a bit?
Driving like a man who has an appointment with a checkered flag hahahahaha I dont think there is a better way of putting forward that he just went there to win it! Period.
Without the number 1 it looks like pterodactyl shit drops on the British racing green🤨
Great vid, but please leave out the "music". We just want to hear cars. Thanks!
No Doubt Aston Martin made Great Cars but Jaguar Dominated Lemans in the 50s
Drives multimillion Pound Car, but wears gardening gloves
why is the music louder than the person talking about their car half petrolisious vids are like that.
One of the most beautiful cars ever created, engineered and designed by Black men. Tell the truth - the owners inherited the current company after the society reset.
Cheers Stephen. - Rudy
All Dragstrips run East to West for the quickest elapsed times.
It's because the car is accelerating into the rotation of the Earth.
But of course; every Racer knows this Factoid.
yet another top notch video. Great job guys
The music is really annoying. Far too loud.
That's our Brett driving DBR1/1 there 😊
Since when did Dr Oz become a historian and speaks British?
Stirling Moss...... the man, the myth, the Legend.
Great video but why so loud with that stupod bg music? Stop it.
Remember... it is Stirling Moss...not Sterling as in sterling silver.
this is a very beautiful car. the lines on the body are very nice.
Original video thumbs up!!!
Yeah, beautiful car. But sorry, I am italian
The DBR1 makes the EType look like a shitbox
That body shape is one of the all time greats!
can anyone tell me how many inch are the stickers numbers of le mans? !
Still think the Ferrari 250 GTO is the best car
conducir ese carro se debe sentir re capo la verdad envidio a ese señor y no soy envidioso
