Thank you so much for having me Matt! This was too fun ✨
the idea of having the subject of the photo in the distant background is really interesting, the baseball swing shot is compelling
Agreed! Really refreshing.
I'll be honest, when I first started watching Willem's work I didn't get it. At the surface level I was thinking "Okay, that's a building?..." but the more that I look at it as a collective group of work the more I see the nostalgia in his photography. His usage of pastels, and the choice of buildings that are timeless really takes you back. Was it 1990? Was it yesterday? Now I look at it and appreciate the ability to take a person right back to a time that's just gone.
This is pure gold. Its all about photography and not ego, it's fun to watch, you get to learn a lot and understand the mind of the photographer. This kind of work and documenting and explaining, I think that it really matters, and that's thanks to you and your dedication towards photography. I'll share it around me as much as I can. Thank you matt. Again 👍
There needs to be far less ego in the photography world! Thank you for sharing!
27:20 “I appreciate you being Willem to share...”
alvareo92 willing
Adam J no I’m pretty sure he said Willem.
@@alvareo92 Hahahaha
0:31 Get you a girl that looks at you the way Matt looks at Willem
*heart eyes emoji*
Matt reminds me of Sunny Suljic from Mid90s
such a good conversation. the part about instagram intentions vs serious work intentions is something i really preach, where good work put out by a lot of people are being swiped by and not appreciated, and what IS stopped and admired are very trendy instagram posts (i.e. super fancy and edited portraits, aesthetics-oriented photos, etc). Again, really good conversation here yall 👏🏼
Thanks so much, man! I think there's a lot to be said for social media's place in photography.
Very talented and humble photographer. Great work, love the mood in the photos.
Great open and honest conversation between two of the three 'film gods' - see today's Grainydays video elsewhere on YT. The dialogue on the thought process behind the camera is insightful and inspiring. Willem's approach to limiting gear is spot on and even though I still too often lug too much gear with me, my morning walks around town involve just the Yashica TLR with Tri-X: 1camera, 1 lens, 1 film. Looking forward to this talk going in the other direction. You could always invite George to join in too.
Frank Solle I’ve literally went from Grainydays to here xD made my day brother!
Haha, I just found out about Grainydays' channel. Love it. And I love the idea of simplicity, especially when just going for a walk and seeing what you see. Keep that up and thanks for the support!
@@mattdayphoto I love both of your channels, inspires me to shoot more and more film every day. My digital work is taking a big hit :D
M: Dude.
W: Dude.
M: Dude, dude!

M: Dude...
Some pictures are worth a thousand words. Some pictures just need one.
Amazing as always from two legends!
Another aspect of the baseball shot that I haven't seen anybody bring up, that really adds to it in my opinion, is the lighting. That dark area in between the houses and the dark trees behind the kid make him stand out so much- it is incredible.
I recognized where he was shooting right away, grew up and still live in the area and he did a great job capturing it.
Started watching his videos. Thats cool the two of you colaborating.
Also bought some strobes from Mid West so stoked about that
Super entertained and schooled by this video. Willem's photos are pure Americana and show that photography does not have to be looking for the hero shot but just documenting what you see around you, natural and un-staged. I look forward to the next one in this series.
Such rad content, thanks guys!!
Great episode. really enjoyed the insight into the photos. Hope a similar episide is in the makings soon.
Love watching Willem's videos, especially since I'm in the same area.
Awesome!
Totally amazing guys! You are going to be the legends of the future.
Too kind!
Great stuff. Really like Willem's work and it was nice to get some of his insight into these images.
Thanks for watching!
Great collaboration! Thx guys!
Pure gold! This is why I subscribe to your RUclips. Well done Matt.
Thank you so much!
awesome conversation....very constructive. thanks guys.
Love the over the shoulder camera shots.
I was curious if people would like it or hate it, honestly. Haha. Thanks for the feedback!
Very much enjoyed this!
Glad to hear that!
Yeah Willem!
Brian Lackey ❤️
Hey Matt, thanks for making this video. I really appreciate both your and Willem's work, and this was so great to see both of you in one video. For some constructive criticism, next time I would like to hear more from your guest; I feel like the majority of the conversation was dominated by you, and while you obviously have good things to say, I feel like if you asked more concise questions and let Willem elaborate more on his process it would have made an even stronger video. All in all, highly enjoyable content. Keep em comin!
I love Willem's work, he's very talented and seems to be a nice guy too! this vid felt like 5 minutes really :)
Very nice dude!
WOOOO ITS OUT!! Now we should add joe greer! Maybe like a day out shooting. Definitely dig this tho, more of it will be dope.
Cheers
Joe will be on The Photo Breakdown very soon.
@@mattdayphoto niceee. Gonna keep my eyes peeled.
Awesome interview. The only thing I'm missing is the "dude" counter. :D
I love the night shot, very Spooky, in a good way.
Awesome!
The house with Spongebob actually fits the color scheme of Spongebob too ;)
I can see that!
i love this, eating popcorn now lol
the legenddd
Loved seeing this in my sub box
On Critiques: Critiques are great for helping you think about things you hadn't seen or had overlooked, or about different perspectives, or just obvious mistakes you're too close to notice. That said it's also important to have your own criteria and ideas for your work as well, and be able to combine the two - accept the feedback and see how you can fit it into your work while retaining what makes it your own vision of things. Be open to trying new or different things in your work, but be aware of what feels right for you as well.
The best crossover in history
Take that, Marvel.
Super interesting interview🎞 🔝
Willem is the man!
Agreed!
It was tough to get through with the totally, dudes and likes but the images and genuine love of film got me through it.
Just the way we talk. Gotta be myself.
Heey Matt, really interesting video, I love this kind of stuff. The questions are interesting and make me keep watching the vid for 30 minutes. but I think it could be even more interesting to start a little discussion about the photographers work. you know, talking about things you think different about, and being a bit critical about it is never a bad thing. let me know what you think about this. love you man, keep up de awesome work, I'll definitely keep watching you're videos. ✌🏼🇳🇱
awesome podcast
You may want to look at the photographs of George Tice. He is one of my favorite photographers. His photographs pull me into the scene. He did photographic essays of Paterson, NJ near where I live. I like the subject matter of the photographs your friend is taking.
You should do a collab with negative feedback, yourself, William verbeek and kingjvpz together it would be rad!!!
Kingjvpz comes no where near these guys. He's a pretty common photographer ngl
@@DIDIMIKK ouch haha...
@@brendanwho I don't want it to sound hateful because I really respect Kingjvpz grind, thats why I follow him too, just don't think it's the same level of photography
I love this please do more
More on the way!
22:50 It's a safe house. Meanwhile there is a full powered 5G tower behind the garage.
Ok so new additiion to my bucket list: Be on Matts podcast.
First pic weirdly reminds me of Stranger Things season 1 lmao
I can see that!
Todd Hido also. He shoots houses at night.
That glass of water looks real good.
Thats actually really cool - it sounds boring enough but youve got some sweet images
Chill!
You're such a great duo... I value so much "honest harsh critique" as you said, it's so helpful but so hard to find. Please do other videos together speaking of each other's work or even other people's work!
Plenty more to come on here and my podcast, The Shoot, when it comes back this fall!
wow. so gooooood matt x willem
What do people in America say to a kid that stands in the drive with a bulky brick and looking concentrated towards the buildings? Is there any danger of being shot?
Everything about this rules
Todd Hido?
Yah, definitely what he’s channeling here.
Pfntom Productions well, Picasso’s advice ;)
yeeet
A couple of dudes
The photographs are too generic. How many photo books have taken these subjects
old cars and houses at night with film is the new cliche that's replaced "street photography." Yawn.
Cool bro, this isn’t for me....i feel this has been done and over done ....
What has been over done ?
Fully agreed
what?
What has been done and over done?
Honestly, I don't see anything compelling about any of these shots. The guy has no sense of lighting or composition. His "work" is just a bunch of snapshots with no thought going into what it is that he's trying to convey with his photos. The whole conversation is the exaltation of mediocrity.
Furthermore, the guy can't tie two words together to make a complete sentence. Everything sentence sounds "... like yeah... I had to take this photo... cause I like really liked the scene... and I like I knew I had to take that photo... like.. yeah..." Ridiculous!
Its also funny how I couldnt care less about your opinion and its all just for fun.
Lol what a Douche
Ever study Eggleston? Banal works try it
He mention loves Honest critique and I agree it helps you to get better!
Are you seriously trying to compare THIS to Eggleston?
