Verhoeve identifies it: "learning how to see better." Too many photographers rely on their cameras to do the work. It's not the camera. It's the person identifying interesting visuals. Knowing which direction to point the camera and when to press the shutter button.
In my experience the greatest thing a photographer can do to improve their photography is draw. You don't have to draw well or show anybody your drawings, but drawing forces you to look with greater concentration and selection. Drawing is weight lifting for photographers.

Willem from the bottom of my heart I am amazed by your work and videos that you create. It is amazing to see someone with my age to dive into the topic of photography and help others to learn what photography is all about. Im impressed by what amazing characters you are surrounded by. I think it is very important to tackle this topic not only by explaining what new features the latest and greatest cameras have and why one should be buying those, but by helping to understand the essence of photography and what helps to makes a great picture (e.g. the story behind it) . I sincerely enjoyed Coreen Simpsons view about shooting what you find interesting and not only to photograph what people think, what they want to see. I hope you understand what I am trying to say - I am from Germany and therefore English is not my first language. Keep it up and please give us more of those Phototalks!

Assign yourself. Those are the most important words in this video. If you are not inspired to take the photo or draw the picture your work will suffer.

How powerful, to suggest that photographers can should do their own projects first and then try to sell it instead of the other way round. The fact that this is possible as others have dons thisis incredibly inspiring

The self-assign thing he mentioned is very important. Even in filmmaking, it's good to just go out and shoot instead of waiting to get hired.

These Phototalks are so well made, Willem. I love how several of the photos are shown several times, so you get both a first and a second impression after having heard the photographer talk a little bit. It's a small detail, but the way you read a picture after being given a context for it, is so different from the first impression.
