The most formulaic thing these days is inauthenticity and following a template like you said. If you do that you’re just setting yourself up for inevitable burnout. Sure, you might get some views and make some money but you’re doing it through a mask. I completely agree with you.
Not an old man. Just a photographer growing into themselves and figuring out exactly what they want.

One thing I appreciate about is that you don't give into the RUclips hype. Someone else posted on RUclips today about Aerochrome and it being the "Goat Film" and the "Holy Grail". And there were all these jump cuts and it seemed like an ADHD nigh mare. One thing I love about you and this channel is your storytelling and that everything is just a slow burn of authenticity. Thanks for being you, and thanks for doing what you do. Happy 10 years!
You were one of the first channels I subscribed to when my interest in photography began around 2016. Still enjoy your videos a great deal. Since then I became a youtuber myself, with a similar journey to yours: slow, steady growth over the years - leading up to doing youtube full time. Agree it is such a luxury to have this job, especially for a family man. Infinite freedom, barely any stress, getting to be creative, getting to follow your passion in life, and getting paid for it. If I want to take a nap, I take a nap. If I want to take a day off, I take a day off. If my family needs me, I never have to negotiate with my boss to be there for them. Best job in the world. I hope and believe that you will get many more years doing this Matt!
Ive been following you since the start. I remember commenting about you posting photos on the Nikon FM2 review you made, like you said. Back in those days you didn't post photos, but when you started sharing your family photos it was really special. Beautiful documentation.
That review made me get my first FM2 and now I'm a Leica photographer. Big thank you for these 10 years!

Matt...Happy Anniversary. I found your channel around 4 years ago and you have not only taught me a lot about gear.....you have conveyed a sense of passion that helps to get me out of the house to shoot. I'm a retired broadcaster and we had an acronym in my part of the business (sports talk radio) we used in evaluating talent. And that was POKE: Passion, Opinion, Knowledge and ENTERTAINMENT. You posess all four of these aspects of what makes someone an effective communicator, who can build and keep an audience. I also live in a small city and while I worked in NYC for 35 years, I'm finding ways to shoot what is being presented to me. Eggleston said it best when talking to his wife about shooting in the south, "Everything is so ugly here," and she responded, "Then go shoot ugly!" As much as I'd love to be in NYC now that I"m retired and pursuing my passion, I am not......so I'lll just shoot "ugly". Thanks for keeping me going.

Been following you from the start, as I had just started my degree at that same time. Watching your videos helped me load the cameras I was renting from my university! It’s kinda crazy to think it’s been that long! You have done so much for the community by providing the content you have… And just following along with all the life happenings it’s strange but you can tell how much of yourself you pour into your content! I really wish you and the family all the best.

I dont remember exactly when I found your channel but it was towards the beginning of 2015 before I bought my first film Leica and developing b/w at home (with the help of your videos) living in southern indiana/ kentucky area you’ve alway been a very relatable and inspirational photographer. I haven’t been super vocal in the comments all these years but I’ve always looked forward to the next upload. Keep up the awesome content and cheers to future!

I started my film photography journey mid 2015 and this was one of the first channels I found and immediately followed. And it's one of the very few of those channels from back then that I am still following and regularly watching, despite me having switched to digital a few years back.
Thanks for staying true to who you are and not turning into a gear review for the sake of paid promotions channel like some others did over time!

Happy Anniversary - What a milestone!
It's my fifth year doing RUclips and I haven't been nearly as consistent as you due to my health issues and the pandemic etc. My channel somehow veered off into a really odd direcion too, unplanned - I started out making mostly photography videos and make most of my money with music now 🙃 I have absolutely no idea how that happened, but it's really cool. It's so strange how this platform can turn your life upside down like that! And I hear ya on the odd comments. One guy recently counted how often I blink per minute - it's apparently a lot because I've been shooting on a Canon 700D this whole time and that means I need bright lights since it maxes out at ISO 400 before the 1080p image falls apart completely.
Here's to another 10 years, mate! I've been watching your channel since the very beginning, always an inspiration. It's so nice how down to Earth you seem. All those fancy New York photographers with their fashion shoots aren't nearly as interesting as just watching you reflect on how to live a good life for half an hour 🤷♀
Great video Matt! Long time watcher of your channel and it's always great! Should really comment more and give some encouragement to all the heart you put into your work.
Your videos help me through a chronic illness I picked up a few years ago, bringing a little meditative respite, so keep it up - I appreciate you! (I usually never use that now cliche phrase, but it's true!)
I don't really like "photography youtube" in 2024 - it's a whole world and I'm not interested in it. But - BUT - back in 2014ish, RUclips was so helpful for finding info on random film cameras - troubleshooting problems, how to sync a flash etc. Yours stood out (maybe because I'd recently got a Hasselblad and needed reassurance on how I was loading it etc), and you were a skater and it was exactly the info I was after. Anyway thanks for that, congrats on 10 years!

Life unfolds in ways we can’t imagine. A seemingly small choice somehow becomes life defining. This has obviously happened to you. My suggestion is to keep on the path, adjusting and modifying as you see fit, until you decide it’s done.

As someone who started out watching you pretty early on... drawn in by some of those early camera reviews... my honest take: I personally loved photography. I was born and raised still in a time where I learned FILM photography, not because it was hip, but because it was at the end of its (previous) life and my college had not really updated to "digital" yet. I found you and saw that you were a dude in the same place in life... my first child was born in 2013. Even though I have never met you, you were someone with a shared interest that was going through a similar place in life. So, of course I have "tuned in" for the reviews... but honestly, I have stuck around for the stories of your life... because I see my own "stories" there too. Stories of "life" is what lures me in... and I imagine it is for others too. It is hard to ask someone to be honest about their life... because that takes being vulnerable... but you have been. I can't speak to everyone, but long past your thoughts on the Pentax 67 (or otherwise,) I check back in to see "how the kids are doing... how are things going in your life." I'm a dude who had a lot of friends when I was younger (skate/punk rock) and now, not so much... just time to be a parent. So, maybe that speaks more about me... but, I like following you on this journey... because I am on my journey too. So, I just say THANK YOU to you for providing this outlet and for sharing about life... documenting... and cameras. Best to you and your family (and looking forward to your book arriving soon!)

I started out with a camera at a young age, my mom bought me a new Pentax K1000 kit with a 50mm, I still have it and have been a hobbyist since. A year or so ago I decided to try out Leica because I had gotten to a point financially where I could buy it cash and it not be a huge deal. I use RUclips to research and did that to watch videos on various Leicas and of course your vids along with others started coming up regularly. Been enjoying the vids and interesting I had never known about zines until I started watching your vids also squarespace for me is something I did not know much about and may possibly start up my own site. Overall you have been a great resource of information!

When I thought about starting a YT channel, I thought it will go down the videography route. But somehow I enjoyed photography much more and you definitely inspired and make me feel good to build a small, simple channel which is more quiet compared to most fast pacing and shouting channels.

Matt, I think people who follow you do so for your sincerity and authenticity. While the growth of the channel has been slow and steady, I find that to be a good thing; you never chased after clout or virality or any of the highly sought after vanity metrics in today's vapid social media climate. You're just this humble dude doing your humble thing and bringing us along for the ride and I think most of us long-time subscribers really appreciate that level of normalcy. The best part is that you're also this really talented photographer who posseses this pretty extensive knowledge around photography. Some years I've really taken a backseat to my own photography but I could always count on you and your videos for organic inspiration because I know you are a genuine guy, a normal guy, in some ways just like me maybe. Anyway, happy 10 years! Hope to see you still on here in another 10. All the best to you, man!

Long time viewer, first time commenter. Can't say thank you enough for all of the content you've produced over the years. Bought my first two M bodies earlier this year, probably subconsciously due to your channel haha.

You would think the channel would be bigger considering the impact I think Matt had in the community.
The T shirt says it all, I don't envy people starting now either , but you have to do your own thing and forget about trying to grow it because the algorithms will fight you, I wouldn't rely on it fir an income these days. I started mine more than 10 yrs ago and then let it go for years . I have a very small micro corner of YT but I don't rely on it for money. Also you can't care too much about how the work looks because YT compress the images so they don't look absolutely perfect. It's just away to get the work out the front door , but that's it . Sponsorship is where the money is for sure , i think its funny how people think they will become a pro and sell their work to support them. Its just not how it works.
Matt, you built a community...not a following. Many comments on you videos have their own sub conversations between community members. You provide perspectives from another point of view for many of us when we are struggling with creative processing, burnout, direction, or even our own personal issues entrenched in our photography and art. We thank you for your service, smiles, struggles, and sense of friendship to not only your art, but to your family and this community. Joke aside, I think I started watching your channel in 2016 and stopped in late 2022. I did not consider your channel as a gear review one but the switch happened. I always liked the fact that you were quite honest, sharing your feelings in an intelligent way and not using them to get more views. Now I am feeling that for nearly 2 years now things have changed.
