    Just wanted to note if you are in the new UI Preview mode the "patch" tab is not visible under the Work Space selection. With new look of the UI Preview you remain in the Design mode. You can then select "surface" and it will bring up another set of tabs to choose from. Under "create" the Offset function is visible. At time stamp 10:20 this will allow to create the rubber component of the bowl.

      Thanks for sharing this, Craig! That is correct. I don't plan on switching to the new UI (for recording purposes) until they have officially pushed it out. Mainly because they're still changing things day by day and I don't want to end up with recordings of 3 or 4 different variations.
      Anyway, thanks again for sharing this. I appreciate you taking the time to comment. Cheers, Kevin :)

    General feedback: truly excellent series. The projects are engaging. We build on the foundation we've already established with prior lessons; learning new concepts and techniques each time. It's unfortunate that the tool has changed as much as it has since the videos were recorded. Silver lining... figuring out how to solve a version inconsistency issue makes me a more competent modeler.

    Great course Kevin!
    Am I doing something wrong or is the resulting body from the Offset hollow? Then when we Thicken it, it thickens from the surface of the offset, instead of the surface of the steel. Making it so that there is space between the steel and the rubber and not a tight fit?
    Fixed it by setting the offset to 0 (zero) and then Thickening from there. It makes a new body no matter if I say Join or New Body. Am I overlooking something here?
    (On closer inspection, the resulting body has issues with what seems like not connecting faces from the top and bottom to the rounded sides too for some reason. Changing the offset to 0.01 seems to have fixed this problem.)

    • @ProductDesignOnline
      @ProductDesignOnline  5 лет назад

      Thanks, Marvin. I'm happy to hear you're enjoying the course.
      If you want it to be touching then you're correct, you can set the offset to to ".01" or larger. You'll likely get issues with 0 because that would place the face at the same spot...and wouldn't technically be "offsetting it."
      There is a little gap in mine. Obviously, the rubber would have to be manufactured to stretch over the bottom flange of the bowl. I was more worried about the appearance of the rubber. Here's a screenshot of what the model looks like. You'll see a very small gap - snag.gy/hp8XyV.jpg

    Okay, I feel silly asking this but at 2:50 in this video when entering only a known angle for sketch. How did you manage to toggle from inputting the distance to imputing the angle of the line instead?? I am so used to other surveying CAD packages or straight CAD where one uses the "

    • @ProductDesignOnline
      @ProductDesignOnline  5 лет назад

      Hi, Jason. Great question - and something I will elaborate on in future videos. There will always be a second input field whenever you're using certain sketch tools that have degrees as an available option. For the line command, the degrees will show up any time you're creating a line of a preexisting point or end point of a line. So at 2:50 there was an input field for the length and another input field for the degrees.
      What I did is hit the tab key to switch from the length to the degree field in order to fill that out first (if yours defaulted to the length). It's important to note that you can only fill out the corresponding measurements per each input - meaning, you cannot type a degree in the length input nor a length (mm) input in the degree input field. I hope this helps... let me know if this clears it up! Cheers, Kevin :)

      @jayclyde6045 5 лет назад +1

      @@ProductDesignOnline Okay, I got it, as long as you haven't previously entered a value for distance or angle, tab will toggle between the two. It's only after you have entered a value for either that tab will lock that value in!! Something so simple tripped me up so much... gosh!!

With the perpendicular constraints in place, you do not also need the horizontal constraints. If you take a look at my screencast at 3:47 you will see that I just have a perpendicular constraint at the top left corner (not the bottom left corner as you do in your file...and same on the opposite side). The error message is essentially saying that it can't "compute" the constraint because it would be overconstrained to force those lines to be horizontal in two different ways. Cheers, Kevin :)

    Hi Kevin, What is different between surface offset and solid offset
    Can you explain for me? at 7:24

    • @ProductDesignOnline
      @ProductDesignOnline  5 лет назад +1

      Hi, CHO성진. The surface offset creates surface bodies that have no real thickness to them until you thicken them (using the thicken command) or turn them into solid bodies. In this scenario, I offset the surface so it was easy to trim and work with and then I thickened the surface so it was a solid (and realistic) body. Cheers, Kevin :)

    What is Patch workspace? How is it different from model workspace?

    • @ProductDesignOnline
      @ProductDesignOnline  5 лет назад +1

      Hi, Paul. Great question! The Patch Workspace has two main purposes. First, to repair imported data that has holes in it. Second, to create surface models. Surface modeling techniques, such as the rubber banding in this video, are used to create objects by creating their outer surface and then by adding a thickness to it.
      Surface modeling is widely used for packaging and other products where the outside contour or surface is more important than the inside. Here are some surface modeling videos to check out - ruclips.net/p/PLrZ2zKOtC_-DOD6xpOtn5pFPO1mUNcPhv

    Hello Kevin, I cannot find "Patch" menu in the updated Fusion 360 new version. If possible, could you please update you video?

    • @ProductDesignOnline
      @ProductDesignOnline  5 лет назад

      Hi, Erkan AĞIR. All of the "Patch" workspace tools are now included in the "surface" tab from the "Design" workspace. The Design Workspace now encompasses the solid modeling tools, surface modeling tools, sheet metal tools, and the "tools" tab which includes some analysis functions, 3D printing and your add-ins and scripts.
      This Friday's video will be covering the new UI and all of the updates and changes. I'll be discussing all of the critical changes that you need to be aware of to find the new placement of tools, which will hopefully make it easy to still follow along with these older videos. Cheers, Kevin :)

    Ok so when you go ahead and then stop the sketch to activate the revolve tool, why does the sketch need stopping? What happens when you stop the sketch? Also why did you select new component? Could the new component from right clicking in the browser top line have in fact been done before this at the beginning?

    • @jefffield1402
      @jefffield1402 4 года назад +1

      James Barratt, the revolve tool is a Solid tool, so a sketch has to be/will be stopped to do a revolve. You can either stop a sketch manually, then select the revolve tool, or Fusion 360 knows, that if you select the revolve tool (or any solid tool) the sketch must be stopped.

    Hi, do you know why i dont have all the materials you have in appearances? For rubber all I have is "bumpy" and "weathered" I dont have soft or hard. I really appreciate your videos!

    • @ProductDesignOnline
      @ProductDesignOnline  5 лет назад

      Hi, John. I'm happy to hear you're enjoying my tutorials!
      Make sure you have the "show downloadable materials" option checked that's located in the Appearance dialog box. If that is unchecked then it will only show the handful of materials that you have downloaded before. Once that is checked you'll want to double check that you have the folders expanded to see all of the various materials.
      By default, the dialog box is quite small and hard to see a long list of materials. I would recommend extending the Appearance dialog size. Let me know if you're able to find it! Cheers, Kevin :)

      @@ProductDesignOnline Thank you, that worked, I extended the box and am now able to search for the materials. I see if you right click on the material you can add the material to a favourites list which could save some time.

    This lesson was considerably easier if you managed to complete Day 10. I was sweating the whole time waiting for something to go wrong. Autodesk sure changes up the workspace often. 1:35 when I double click on the image icon to reposition the canvas, the edit feature windows open and I have all the controls to move the canvas, but the canvas itself is not visible. For the life of me I can't figure out why. In the end, I just typed the X Distance and Y Distance as shown in the video and clicked OK. The canvas is then visible and in the desired position.

      Hmm.... right-click on the Canvas (image) in the Fusion 360 Browser and check the opacity setting. It may also be te affected by a different component being active.

    When trying to use Shell to hollow the bottom I can't select the bottom face. It wants to select the whole component. I have Select/Selection Priority/Select face priority checked. Without Shell active I can select just the face.

      Think I figured out the issue. I had trouble yesterday with the same problem. Kept going back and redoing it and it finally work, but not sure why. Today i started from scratch again but this time since I knew I would want to fillet the bottom outside edge later I did it in the sketch before I revolved it. Then I couldn't select the bottom face to Shell. My dialog box looked the same as yours. Then I unchecked the Tangent Chain box and it worked. I had no idea want it meant. Now I know... with the bottom edge pre-filleted the outer rim was tangent to the bottom face so with tangent chain checked it had to select the whole bowl. Then I also learned why you didn't fillet those corners before doing shell. If filleted before doing shell, shell will remove the whole bottom lip. Cool! But now I have to retract all the nasty things I said about &@#^%# buggy software!

    • @ProductDesignOnline
      @ProductDesignOnline  5 лет назад

      Hi Steve. The "Tangent Chain" option shouldn't have affected it in this scenario unless your file was set up differently. The fillets definitely would change how the shell command works, as you found.
      One thing to be aware of, as someone had run into this yesterday... make sure that you're using the solid revolve command (blue icon) and not the surface revolve command (orange icon). Surface bodies have no thickness to them, which means the shell command will not work.
      Would you mind sharing the link to your file so I can take a look? To share your file please go to File > Share > Share Public Link (make sure "downloadable" is toggled on) > Paste your link here as a reply to this comment. Hi Kevin. The problem I was having was caused by filleting the bottom rim before I revolved it. I have that sorted out and successfully made 4 bowls. However, I had moved on to other tutorials then came back to this one and can't select the 185mm circle to extrude to trim the rubber. It seems to be reaching right through the circle on the bottom to the faces on the bowl. I suspect I have messed up my selection settings but don't know where. I put my preferences back to default but it hasn't fixed my selection issue. Could you add recommended selection settings to your default setting web page? Do you have a selection tutorial? Thanks.

      @@dlpgraphics Hi Steve, I don't have a tutorial specifically on selection filters, although that's a great idea (added to the list). I would suggest resetting yours. Click the "select" dropdown > selection filters > Check "Select All" which will turn them all back on (default). Here's an image for reference - snipboard.io/tSRUF7.jpg
      Let me know if that fixes it for you. Cheers, Kevin :)

      That didn't fix it but I now know what I was missing. It seemed to be an intermittent problem. After I posted yesterday I left it for a while, then went back later, made a new one from scratch and it worked fine. This morning I went back to it and deleted the extrude from the timeline. Then when I tried to redo it I couldn't select the bottom circle again. What was happening was when I deleted the extrude from the timeline it left the circle sketch visibility turned off so when I tried to redo the extrude it couldn't select the circle. Just had to turn visibility on for the circle sketch!
