I've got a scary doll story! So my mom collected black dolls and kept some of them on display on a glass shelf in the living room. Now for some reason when i was about 5 we had a huge pile of boardgames blocking that shelf. It was about 3 to 4 feet high. So one day little me was crawling behind the game pile because I loved that kind of thing. I come face to face with this doll of an old skinny black woman in a rocking chair with a bowl of cherries in her lap. I remember before the Pile was there i used to pick at the cherries and peal them apart because they were made of painted styrofoam balls. So i move to pick at the cherries again and the doll turns her head towards me, smiles creepily and says "hello". I crawled backwards so friggin fast and never went near that doll again. Years later I realized this must have been a dream. I sincerely hope it was.
Since someone's thinking it, Robert was NOT the inspiration for Chucky (which was created as a satire about toy companies and advertising firms preying on impressionable children).
Growing up there was a patch of woods nearby that had been dubbed the Haunted Woods because there was an old foundation of a house from the 1700's in them that also had a well. At the bottom of the well was the head from a porcelain doll. You could only see it during the winter when all the plants had lost their leaves and the bottom of the well was dried out. The legend was that a small girl had fallen into the well with her doll and died so her family abandoned the house out of grief and it was her spirit that haunted the wood. When I got older I learned that the wood had gotten its name and the story started by the parents living in the neighborhood when it was 1st built in the 50's to try to discourage their children from playing in the woods because they were afraid one would fall into the well.
I think you'd probably find a lot of legends and stories are created to make kids listen to their parents. Behave or Krampus will take you Behave or Santa won't give you presents Behave or the fae will take you away Kinda like how they said it was illegal to turn the car light on when it's dark out.
I live 3 hours from Key West and have always known about Robert the doll. He freaks me the hell out. So many stories of him haunting tourists and his spirit following them home or causing them to get into a car accident if they didn't greet him properly. I have never stepped foot in the museum where he is housed and never will. The photos alone give me the heebee jeebies.
I saw this come on last night but wouldn't watch before bed. The malevolent doll is a scary trope, isn't it? I like your new Library and fireplace backdrop. Looks good
That was a good one. I've always been drawn to the more eerie stories. Probably why Poe is favorite. Hope you have a knock out ready for All Hallow's Eve. I'll be waiting.....Evermore. LOL
shivers! Animated dolls have been an absolute terror of mine, for as long as I can remember. No scary movies or books required. I would cry and refuse to go in rooms where ventriloquist dolls were at, being convinced that they would get up and come after me.
Nope, could not pay me enough to linger on that museum exhibit. That's absolutely terrifying energy and I don't need it sticking to me XD Well done narration though!!!!!!!!!!!
Creepy dolls terrify me so this was pure nightmare fuel. Incredibly fascinating though. Wouldn't have thought dolls were so ancient, at least as far as dolls as toys go. It does make sense though, since dolls let children learn social skills without having someone present to learn with.
This is an interesting story! I've only heard it in passing and never seen the doll's picture before. Once was enough then! 😅 Also love the small part of teh history of dolls as toys in the beginning, childhood in the past is a topic that I like to read on if/when I have free time.
Hi Cinzia. Keep on posting. I always enjoy you talks. You even got me interested in the ancient Greeks! RUclips has a bad habit of removing people from sites, and deleting unoffensive comments.
After a pretty long and eventful day, I fell asleep halfway through trying to listen, woke up to get ready to get my son from another state, finally finished it... I wonder if people of the past had dolls that would seemingly come to life. I've seen woven grass dolls from various native American tribes, most not too detailed, basically the human form but mailable enough to play with, or some like sack dolls, similar to the ones from the movie '9'... or Coraline. I've not run into any certain types of toys that happen to move on their own, without power and a motion sensor, as a kid I had many foster brothers and sisters and none of them had mentioned it either. It is definitely an intriguing topic, I enjoy... "enjoy" seeing the videos of the dolls moving on their own and the families flipping out, or kids just getting up to walk away, or run at times. I am rambling, time for more coffee. ☕🐝🇺🇸
What I love about Robert that I feel a lot of horror films miss when it comes to haunted dolls is that Robert is adorable! He’s a doll that is meant to be played with by young children and designed as such. The horror should come from the stark contrast of his sweet face to the horrible things being done.
Im Not sure whether to respond with "holy sh, thats creepy!" And "oooh creepy dolls, cool" Guess its gonna be: "holy shit, those stories are freaking creepy.... Nice! (She said, double checking that the doors are indeed locked)"
I'm familiar with Robert as a modern-day supernatural curio, but I really enjoyed your take on the doll's history, as well as the brief history of dolls in general.
I had a whole bunch of porcelain dolls in their boxes atop my wardrobe as a child. I never understood why people gifted them to me: they were not to play with (according to mum) and they were so eerie to look at in the night.
Robert's story reminds me of the movie The Boy. If anyone likes horror stories about dolls, I recommend The Boy and the sequel. They're both pretty good (the first is better).
There is just something disturbing about porcelain dolls. I dont scare easily. Those dolls just make me feel unneasy. More specifically the older ones touched by time.
I was never scared of dolls, and still am not! I find myself endeared by them, rather. Even this one. I think the love and fun they bring supersedes any creepiness for them, idk
I thought I heard that Robert was given by a disgruntled leaving employee, who was into nature-whitchkraft and it is sometimes blamed on that, although it could also be a loyal (to the ex employee) servant in the house building on the idea of Robert...
I remember learning about this doll as a child. It was on some paranormal TV series. I was convinced Robert was gonna walk all the way to my house and punish me for moving away from Florida 😂
Great video. I've always been intrigued by Robert the doll but just now I thought of a more mundane, if disturbing, explanation, was Robert's owner Jean mentally ill? Perhaps an abuse victim with DID who used Robert as a sort of scapegoat for actions he didn't want to be responsible for? Or did he do something supernatural to make the doll the way it is?
Seeing Robert is on my Bucket list and as an adult seeing my soon to be 5 year old play rough with her baby dolls unnerves me. My American Girl doll Kirsten and my baby doll Susan along with my childhood friends American Girl doll Molly currently sit in my bedroom.
I wonder if anyone's ever attempted to communicate with the spirit inside this doll? Cuz I'm thinking, why not go "into the light" instead of staying tethered to this doll?
for the algorithm
It is a hungry beastie!
The spookiest.
For Frodo ⚔️

"Invisible brain matter scattered over my bedroom floor". Well, there's an image that I'll be stuck with for some time!

I worry about the size of that fire around all those books. Great spooky tale.
I once slept on the floor when at a sleepover in the 90s as the China dolls in the spare room I was given terrified me!
I still remember i saw a travel channel show about him when i was like 7 and it scarred me for life
I loved stories about dolls coming to life as a child and always hoped it would happen to me. After this video, though, I'm glad it never did.
Perfect for halfway to Halloween 🎃
Thanks for this fascinating creepy video Cinzia!
My pleasure!
@@CinziaDuBois thanks you

Love your channel!! Damn the algorithm!!!
I loved the introduction. It was extremely enjoyable and a perfect way to delve into the story.
You didn't pop up on my feed when this posted two days ago!! But I saw you today so ok for now...thanks for your work!!
I saw this come on last night but wouldn't watch before bed. The malevolent doll is a scary trope, isn't it?
I like your new Library and fireplace backdrop. Looks good
Great video.
One perhaps irrelevant question:
How is the fireplace under the window? Chimney?
Nice work, Cinzia! Next time I go to Key West, I will certainly look up this doll.
Yes more creepy stories, please You do them so well.
I feel like I need to burn some sage to purify so I can sleep tonight.
Not today, Robert.
😂😂😂
Love a good scary story! Please don’t stop what you are doing ❤️
Phenomenal video Cinzia, please don't ever stop.
Love this background! So cozy and perfect for The Lady of the Library!

I really like the different take on this story with the anthropological background!
i love your voice so much!!

This feels like creepy pasta live narrated, I love it!

I love this so much!
Perhaps you could research Boleskin House. You would be sure to cover it well.
Great story.
For the algorithm x2

Loved the history portion the most.

This was fun! Robert is adorable.
I love these videos so much! Your content is the perfect way to unwind at the end of the day with some tea
Haunted stuff isn't real, but it can make excellent Scooby Doo stories for Halloween.
My spine is crawling!
Omg, Plutarch's daughter was breastfeeding at 2, I'm gonna share this quote with my "Breastfeeding older babies and beyond" group.
Awesome topic, can't wait to watch it all.

No thigh...... I feel so cheated 💔
Love your vids! I had a nearly identical porcelain doll, cracked and all.
Always love your videos, they always give me such inspiration to draw
Great story! Yes, nore creepy topics will be interesting.

I was never scared of dolls, and still am not! I find myself endeared by them, rather. Even this one. I think the love and fun they bring supersedes any creepiness for them, idk
An excellent story, Cinzia, thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Gene had a vivid imagination and used the doll as a scapegoat for bad behavior.

Nice, missed it in my recommendations when it was new, but fascinating

Oh So interesting, have heard of this doll, your additional info is Wonderful ❤ Thank You ❤

When the rational explanation is even more disturbing than the paranormal one 😢
