I think that's why he agreed to go on the show. He had deluded himself to such a degree that he really thought he could go on the show and get everyone on his side. Most narcissists avoid all types of therapy like the plague, especially something as public as Dr. Phil. They'll say something along the lines of, "I don't want to be in a situation where I'm just going to be blamed and criticized unfairly."

I think dr. Phil's exploitation of watchable content approach was not very productive. There's a way of getting him to admit to himself and move on to the future instead of trying to get him to admit terrible crimes infront of the entire nation. He set him up for defensive reflection and in turn this guy is never going to trust anything he says and will probably create a worse atmosphere for this guy to be able to have a productive relationship with his son.

I think it's partly because he's getting paid big bucks for it but mostly because he can tell that the man in question has some severe, severe issues. I mean, look at his behaviour. He's acting like a cornered mouse throughout every clip - hunched over, eyes darting about, constant attacking. He's absolutely terrified, and he's biting at everything and anything reaching his way. Sadly, it results in him completely neglecting his son's sickness and acting out on his family. The kid definitely could use some help to get cleaned up, maybe a month or two in rehab would be enough, but this guy's looking at many years of psychotherapy to overcome his own defences. What a mess. The sister seems fairly responsible, at least more so than the parents. Hopefully, she and the brother can leave and live on their own.

no it’s not just that. from experience from my mum (this seems less obvious compared to her) i can see that he is clearly not mentally well... look at how he acts carefully. he switches and changes the topic erratically. it is not normal, it’s not only nerves. i don’t think anyone sees this. i have a mum similar to him. the intent is still self serving and narcissistic but to take this weird approach and have this kind of paranoid thinking, that’s not right. i think he needs mental assistance immediately before it gets worse. he seems to understand he may have done something wrong so I think he needs help, rather than just going to some ranch, before he stops understanding he is in the wrong.

Leaving a disfunctional and toxic person behind, is the only thing you can do. If they want to change, they will have to do that themselves.
