      First, you have to tightly close all the connecting pipes, and secondly, and most importantly, you have to replace the spark plug to be able to ignite the mixture properly and you want to cancel or replace the air inlet because it is small and somewhat closed and the engine cannot breathe properly

  • @This1Person
    @This1Person 4 года назад +642

    What went wrong: proper fuel mixture, otherwise known as stoichiometric. This amount actually changes based on RPM and compression ratio, more RPM means more air, in which needs more fuel.
    Propane: since the propane was entering the system as a gas, as you revved up, you need to introduce more pressure from the tank. The pressure regulator does that for you, they are usually tuned to the CC and compression ratio of the engine. Ones from a generator usually only work in a small RPM range.
    Butane: this one worked better because the gas was discharged into liquid form, then sucked in through the engines compression. It's probably would have worked better if you had a larger tube for more fuel to be sucked in. You would still need to tune it to make sure the correct stoichiometric level.
    Good job you guys, just next time, discharge butane outdoors.
    God bless

      The butane also needs to be pressurized. Hence the the metal container. Also the line needs to be shortened and the right sized jet introduced. Vaughn

    I work in the LP industry and run across this a lot! First off you need to supply liquid propane to a vaporizer (these utilize hot water from the coolant system if one is available) the reason for this is it supplies a ready supply of fuel independent of the ambient Temperatures as they affect the amount of pressure and BTU’s in the vapor form of LP. Next you have the pressure regulator to bring the freshly vaporized LP down to a set pressure so it stays consistent. Finally you need the correct LP carburetor for your size of motor. Call an outfit in Hampton Iowa called Midwest Meter. I can get you set up for far less than the cost of your generator 😅

    Im running most of my cars on LPG for many years.
    LPG (natural propane gas) conversation is extremely popular in europe (because gasoline is really expensive).
    When done right there are no draw backs! Proper lpg system gets its own ecu, its own injectors, fuel rail, etc. Car still starts on petrol and runs on petrol till it warms up and then switches to LPG.
    I have Impreza STi that is running on LPG.

It is common in Australia to find cars have a dual fuel petrol/LPG fuel system with a dash mounted switch to change from one fuel to another. What went wrong, is you are varying how much air was going into the carburetor, but the amount of fuel was consistent. That's why they have both the butterfly/slide and the needle. So basically it would only run at one rpm range where it had the best a/f ratio. To make it work proper, you'll need to find a way to regulate the fuel as well as air to get the best ratio, and to be able to control both of them with the throttle. Also, the LP needs to be evaporated/heated as it burns in a vaporized state.
    Great video though and I'd like to see a part 2!

    Years ago we ran a friend's van on various gases including butane and propane, I modified an SU carburetor to meter the gas, did away with float chamber and fed the jet with butane (without a regulator) the jet was about 1/8" and we made a needle to suit, had to stretch the spring in the carb due to gas pressure trying to push the needle of the seat. It worked well, the van did quite a lot of miles like that, had to make a copper coil to wrap around the gas bottle to avoid icing. Was just an evening project, for a laugh, took a few hours to get it working properly.

    As your Butane vaporized the refrigeration effect lowered the temperature of the container to the point that the Butane would no longer vaporize quickly enough to feed your engine.
    If you immersed the fuel container into a larger container with hot water in it the engine may run longer.
    Fun fact, Butane is high octane.

    This might be a whole lot easier on a fuel injected bike too, since throttle on the handlebar directly relates to fuel into the cylinder.

    The butane issue sounds like a problem with evaporation. Basically, after a minute or so, the butane starts to get cold and can no longer evaporate fast enough to keep the engine running. I tinker with small engines, and "expiremented" with gas vapor carbs. I would take a small gas can with a piece of rubber hose connected to the spout, and drill a hole in the top of the can and insert a shorter piece of hose that reached almost to the bottom of the can. This allowed air into the can to mix with the gasoline to it could burn. I would then shove the hose from the spout of the can into the throat of a carburetor, and the engine would usually fire up and run for a few minutes, and then die. I discovered that the gasoline would get really cold from constant evaporation into the carburetor, and would no longer evaporate fast enough to run the engine. The gas can would get so cold that condensation would form on the outside of it. The butane might be having the same trouble. If you can find a way to keep it from getting cold, it might work better.

    The propane tank you would need for this to work is not the same tank as you find on a gas grill or the bottle you were using. You need a regulator, a slightly different jetted carb that also has no floats in the bowl, and the proper tank that supplies liquid instead of gas. I was a tech that repaired propane powered engines that powered floor buffers and these motors ran on propane as they had way safer emissions to run indoors.

    Fun fact- any 4 stroke internal combustion engine can be ran on lpg (or cng) as long as you have the proper pressure, regulator and mixer (the carb you used off the generator is the mixer). LPG burns cleaner than gasoline which helps with engine life, can increase performance since LPG has a consistent 105 octane rating you can get more aggressive in tuning the timing table and to top it off it’s relatively cheap. Cng is the same but it’s octane hovers more in the 110+ range but stays relatively consistent at around 110. The largest issue is space for the tanks and infrastructure since there generally isn’t a lot of places most people can fill their tanks (mostly a cng problem, but can be for lpg as well when compared to gas/diesel stations). Lpg can be used as an aid to turbo diesels very easily increasing power/economy via a boost reference system ( which can see huge gains in peak HP and tq with just a tune for this style of system). This style of system is great for those guys who tow a lot and need that extra power and want to burn clean why’ll doing it (and no, more smoke doesn’t equal more power but I could go on and on about that stupidity).

    In Australia it is common for cars to run on LPG or have a dual fuel setup where you can use an internal switch to switch between both fuels. LPG is currently about half the price of petrol so it makes sense to use the gas more than the petrol. I often wondered if you could run a motorcycle on LPG.

      Same in Bulgaria. A proper system costs about 1000 euro with installation. Also, while living in Shanghai, I noticed some scooters ran on LPG, because it's better for the environment, thus allowed by the gov, while petrol isn't, because it pollutes more. There was a small propane bottle inside the scooter's trunk, when you lift the seat. As a Bulgarian, who has only seen this in cars, it was very interesting.

    In the UK you can buy kits to convert your car to LPG and buy it on pumps at gas stations.
    We used to be able to buy new cars already set up to run on it.
    Can wear out your engine quicker as you usually need an engine with hardened valve seat to avoid premature wear.
    You would start your car on normal fuel and switch over when slightly warm.

    Here in Trinidad, West indies you can get a CNG ( Compressed Natural Gas) kit installed on any ICE. The cost of install is about US$2,200. Hopefully over time you will recover initial expenditure, by fuel cost savings. They drill a small hole in the inlet manifold close to the engine and install a nozzle......one per cylinder. The nozzle gets a tiny tube from a pressure regulator. A metal or fibreglass cylinder is installed in your trunk or tray, and a line connects it to the regulator which is installed in the engine bay. (The regulator also has a connector to "fill up" the cylinder at the gas station.) The throttle (butterfly valve) allows air into the engine. The nozzles allows the CNG. As to the ratio........sorry I can't explain.
    But there is a 2 way switch installed on the dash to choose between gasoline operation or CNG operation. There is a indicator of how much CNG you have also. Of course, because CNG does not have a high calorific value as gasoline, the estimated power loss could be between 10-20%. Taxi drivers, and folks who drive long distances to work get an install. To fill a cylinder is about US$2.

    You need a vacuum actuated regulator.
    You'll also need to tune the regulator to meet different loads at different RPM.
    In Australia it used to be a thing to run taxis on LPG (propane), and kits were available.

    Hi, kinda new to your channel, but very much enjoying it. My little brother showed me some of your videos before, but I had forgotten what the name was to watch more.
    Pretty sure you need at least a one way check valve (with filter) to keep you from vapor locking with the butane. That's what it looked like was happening. However, you may need to use a proper regulator kit for that just like with propane. Maybe try a common grill regulator kit since you're trying random things anyway. Lol
    It should be possible to run on a standard carburetor if the flow is regulated properly. There are lots of vehicles that have been set up to run both and I find it hard to believe that people were putting two carburetors on anything to make that work. Maybe you need one that has a switch for the different flow control though.
    Also, I think you'd like my wife's channel: Mench and Zech. It's mostly he singing religious songs.

  • @Razza2250
    @Razza2250 4 года назад

    The first problem is fuel control: Without some way to alter the amount of butane/propane/lpg entering the intake stream, you will not be able to maintain a useful air:fuel ratio. What you need is to use the normal throttle plate on the carburettor and somehow use the throttle cable to also actuate a ball valve on the gas line, this can be tuned to correct AFR and you can add a small bypass tube with another valve used to adjust the idle bypass of the first valve. That solves one problem. The second problem is pressure. In the case of butane, the rate of boil-off from liquid to gas is heavily influenced by temperature. The thing, the temperature drops as the butane evaporates and travels down the line, so you end up with cold liquid butane that is no longer boiling off fast enough. This is where Propane becomes the much better option as it is a gas at much lower temperature and the bottle it comes in maintains a high pressure that can be regulated down to a consistent pressure (tunability here, too). This is really important to making any solution to problem one actually work

  • @rasmus1600
    @rasmus1600 4 года назад

    We tried in school to do somewhat the same, but on a lawnmower (we couldn't afford a bike) and using hydrogen instead of hydrocarbon as propane/butane. The problem we were getting was that the hydrogen was blowing up in the carburetor since the lawnmower was a 2-stroke, a 4-stroke would eliminate that problem. The other problem was that it was hydrogen boosted, meaning we would stop using that much gasoline and use some hydrogen instead. That just makes another problem, that the lawnmower was using a carb and not a fuel controller. The lawnmower began to run way too rich when adding hydrogen. A fuel controller would just decrease the amount of gas used, but couldn't adjust the hydrogen, so it should adjust to the hydrogen.
    So if a bike should run on a hydrocarbon, a fuel controller is nesseceary since it regulates fuel and air to a stoichiometric mixture.
