Hi - A Small Business Specialist is the common title for small business professionals employed by federal agencies. Their job (basically) is to help their internal customers find qualified small businesses to support the mission needs. Their secondary job is to help small businesses navigate an agency. Small Business Liaison Officers (SBLOs) is the same thing, only for large prime contractors like Boeing, Lockheed Marting, etc. If you're just getting started in the federal market, make sure to schedule a meeting with an SBDC counselor and with a PTAC counselor. They're what I call the 7 Mentors. I have videos about them and how to engage them. Good luck, Neil
Thanks @neil. While I have lots of SLED experience and looking to get into FeD work, I was wondering if you thought there were restrictions on doing some continued work whilst on vacation overseas or should ALL work typically be done on US soil always? Thanks in advance.

Hi Neil, Can I place a bid on a construction opportunity as a cleaning business and use a construction company as a subcontractor? I have already changed my NAICS code.
You can pretty much do anything you want in that sense, but it doesn't make sense. I would highly recommend you only go after cleaning contracts and be the best at it. if you win any contract, you'll need to do a portion of the work.
Thanks, Vergil. Hey Neil, great video and you really sparked my interest in being a middleman in government contracting. If you could send me your "Subcontracting road map" you spoke of.Thankyou very much.
Hi James. You can find the roadmap at www.GovConChamber.com/handouts I'm definitely not your guide for the 'middleman' approach since I like helping small business owners build their own expertise, employees, etc. There are a lot of folks who could better inform you on the middleman approach.

great vid Neil! ty! i recently acquired a transportation to help them in the govt market, and subcontracting is the 1st way I would start, esp new to the market, and new business. I'm seeing how can I build their pipeline for upcoming / current contracts. Any advice on entering this industry
Thanks Harmon. Biggest piece of advice at this stage is to form a relationship with your local SBDC and PTAC so they can give you advice that's local including perhaps what firms you could team up with to get started.
When you do construction and you're wanting to do work in other states as the middleman approach, do they expect you to be a licensed contractor in those states as well?
Happy holidays 🦃! I've just been introduced to this field and I'm really interested, please send me the blueprint to the subcontracting road map. Thank you very much.
Good day Neil, I didn't get the chance to listen to you live but going thru your videos are so informative, I am a truck driver (owner Operator) and I would love to know where to start if you have any suggestion it would be greatly appreciated. Fortunately for both of us, the roadmap is available on our blog: www.govconchamber.com/blog/business-development-roadmap-how-to-make-10m-federal-subcontracting
Hi. glad you're getting started. You can get it for now from www.GovConChamber.com/handouts - Also, connect with me on LinkedIn since I share more content there you'll find helpful. Neil
If all you'll be doing is helping construction companies bid, then you don't need to think about JV or subcontracting. You're like a lawyer or accountant, except a salesperson. Most small businesses are good at what they do, but not skilled in sales. If you can help them there, then you'll find a good market for your services. To get started (besides knowing how to do what you'll be doing) all you need to do is stand up a service. Not what I advise on, but you can find thousands of folks who will teach you how to be self-employed in a 'gig' way to these small businesses.
Hello Sir, am in d middle of subcontracting discussion for a cyber project. I found d bid and I approached a veteran to work as Prime as it is a veteran set aside. How do I go about having this Prime sign an NDA? Will a prime sign an NDA from a Subcontractor? I also cannot find any Subcontractor led NDA on the internet
Don't bother with the NDA. You're worried about telling them the opportunity exists. Just approach 20 until you find the one who 'feels' right. They'll have an NDA if necessary, but there's probably nothing you have that will be covered by an NDA. What is your business? UEI? Reach out to me through email or LinkedIn messaging (better) and I can make an intro if that makes sense.
I appreciate the feedback, Alfred. If you're not doing a couple million in service revenue with federal agencies, I'd recommend you stick with the subcontracting. Easier and more profitable. You can find the roadmap here: www.govconchamber.com/handouts

10 million in subcontracting is awesome as long as it doesn't cost you 11 million to run it :~
If it costs $11M, then that company is just doing business wrong. When I talk about $10M in subcontracting, the net profit should be at least $1M.
I wish I knew about contracting before. I just learned about this since I’ve been military for so long. I wish I would have known about this years ago. Thank you so much for your advice!

What is a small business specialist? What are small business liaison officers? What do the both do?
I am just watching this now - if you could send me the roadmap. Thanks

Hi Neil,
Can I place a bid on a construction opportunity as a cleaning business and use a construction company as a subcontractor? I have already changed my NAICS code.
You can pretty much do anything you want in that sense, but it doesn't make sense. I would highly recommend you only go after cleaning contracts and be the best at it. if you win any contract, you'll need to do a portion of the work.

Hi. glad you're getting started. You can get it for now from www.GovConChamber.com/handouts - Also, connect with me on LinkedIn since I share more content there you'll find helpful. Neil
Well I’m going to be a consultant to construction companies, so do I need a joint venture with companies or subcontractors???
If all you'll be doing is helping construction companies bid, then you don't need to think about JV or subcontracting. You're like a lawyer or accountant, except a salesperson.
Most small businesses are good at what they do, but not skilled in sales. If you can help them there, then you'll find a good market for your services.
To get started (besides knowing how to do what you'll be doing) all you need to do is stand up a service. Not what I advise on, but you can find thousands of folks who will teach you how to be self-employed in a 'gig' way to these small businesses.
@@neilmcdonnell ok well I can get my own company (Solution)
Please can you send me the subcontracting roadmap? thank for this video
