This is absolutely the correct way to manage almost any sales process. As a logistic broker who has managed milllions of dollars in United States produce, this is 100% the way. Relationship first, always. Meetings win deals, and helps you focus on the deals that will close.
I've done an RFP for a non-clearance contract and it's a pain and they always chose the lowest bidder for labor expenses, but yeah you make a strong point at 12:33. The people I was working with clearly followed the "start at solicitation" advice and I ended up doing a lot of work for nothing.

You are correct about RFPs. I work in software, and the government RFPs are clearly written in a way that only a select few (or only one) will qualify. They will specify features or dataflows that are not common in the industry and are NOT material to functionality. I keep trying to get my company to understand that we are wasting time on these unless we want to develop relationships in government. Oh, and the RFPs are often over 1000 questions. Such a waste.

Great if you managed to do something that fast! low dollar products are a different ball game then what I am describing in this video. One possible way to go fast is with an agency that you are already on contract with or a rapidly fast sole source. For the most part, Even after you are told you won, it still can take up to and beyond 30 days to actually be put on contract. I ran a rapid acquisitions branch for the USAF and 23 days is the fastest we put someone officially on contract--after the competition took place! Also, you are leaving out the timelines: Below is an example: 1 May: Sources Sought released 1 June: Sources Sought Response due 1 Sep: Solicitation released 1 Oct: Proposal are due 60 day evaluation of proposals (and that's fast) Delay for holidays 15 Jan: Winners are announced (keep in mind, the winner is still not on contract, just informed that they won). 1 March: On contract. 1 April: You invoice the gov 1 June: Gov Pays you
This was very useful, thank you. Would love to get an accounting service contract and plan to use this year to learn how. This was a great start because despite having all the preferences like woman owners, veteran owned etc., Sam.gov and the procurement process just seems like a black box.
This is a great video expect that you said it task 12-18 months to sell to the gov. if that's the case why are solicitations due in 2 weeks to 30 days.
Because the solicitation comes towards the end of the process. Keep in mind, the following does not apply to all purchases but a timeline for a federal contract might look like the following: Jan 2024 federal office has a requirement and funding March 2024 Federal acquisition office puts out a sources sought due in 30 days April 2024 SS are due, government reviews and meets with some companies over the next 4 months while writing the upcoming Request For Proposal that will come out on Sam Aug 2024 RFP comes out due in Sep Sep 2024 Proposal received Oct-Dec: Proposals reviewed and scored Jan 2024: Winner is announced Feb 2024: Purchase order signed by US government and contract begins
Sad thing is reality: choosing the Bud. And if a service RFP or RFQ is higher $ than others, the higher one can be justified if a service esp if done business with them prior. Services are very difficult to change over to another provider due to well, the "service" (or political relationship), which is not measurable unless one had another for comparison, used prior.
We win business all of the time starting in the solicitation phase. And everyone in my field does it in the same way. We win a lot of contracts, and everyone else is doing it this way. I would say we dont win even half of our proposals though, but we win enough to make a lot of money.

12-18 months is insane!!!! $400k contract with 20% profit thats less than $60k a year, that is a horrible deal. I understand if you chase a $2-$3 million contract for 12-18mmonths while the other small ones are coming but your process is crazy long. All the steps make sense but the timeline is just not worth it. I am speaking as a contractor and I go through very similar thing most projects happen in 3-4 months some I wait 6-9 months but I constantly have smaller projects that keep me a float, also people its a horrible job and a position to be in. This is exactly the right thinking. The information I'm seeing put out there is giving a the impression that govcon is a get rich quick scheme that can happen quickly. Now, one thing I will say is that the industry you're in will dictate what profit margins look like. If you're selling a saas product the profits are very high, If you're in services you need to collect multiple contracts. It's ALOT of work!!

Your flashing captions distract from the content of your video.

Heres a tip.... if youre on mobile click to comment and it covers the annoying oversized captions at the bottom of the screen that are not all correct and extremely distracting. Especially with the highlighted word following allong with the audio.
I'm trying to fully understand what we're doing here. I get the process, but I don't completely grasp the bigger picture. Am I essentially acting as a middleman? For example, the government needs something, I find it, and then try to sell the government on using what I found. This would lead to them creating a contract with my 'find,' resulting in me getting a cut? It feels like something might be missing, which makes this video come across more like a traffic-grabber designed to generate revenue from a 'make money' concept video.
Thank you for the comment and sorry for any confusion! First, I will say that I am very biased against the middleman strategy that is out in the social media world. There's no such thing as a middleman and government contracting, you are either a prime contractor or a subcontractor. The first question I have is do you currently have a business that is selling products or services commercially and successfully. If you do own a business, then government contracting could be for you. Just know that it's hard and the timeline for selling to the government is much longer than selling to a business or a consumer. However, there are lucrative government contracts out there, which is why companies sell to the government. If you do not have a business and you're looking at government contracting because you are interested in it or potentially want to get involved, I would say you have a couple of options. One is you could look at working for a company that is selling to the government already--as a sales executive, business developer, engineer, etc. Or if you understand, the government contracting process or have a specific niche within government contracting, you could start a consulting business. This is what I do and I sell to other businesses, meaning a business needs help selling to the government and they pay me a fee or a monthly fee to help them. I typically avoid commissions, but there are certainly people out there that work with companies for a fee plus commission --hope that helps!!
From 1:54 to 1:55 the search interface changes and you now have more options where you selected "notice type". I can't seem to figure out how to get my search to have those options. I only have "status" as show in the time before 1:54. Help!
Every contract is different. However, past performance in general is extremely important in gov contracting. WInning your first contract is the hardest one. Subcontracting with a prime that has experience is a good way to get your feet wet.
Check out the latest USA spending video and confirm how much the government spends on this each year. If you see that the potential revenue is worth your while head over to Dodcontract.com. We'll be opening the adcademy soon.

Currently I'm not selling it, just using it with my clients and allowing my certification students to use it. Will let you know when I make it commercially available again!
You might win 1 or 2 but this is not as business model that I advise. Check out our videos on starting a consulting or advising business for government contractors. This is a much better path for someone in your position.
There's no such thing as a middleman. You are either the prime contractor or a subcontractor. The only exception to that is if you are consulting or advising a business on government contracting. If you are the prime, meaning you find a contract opportunity, you find a business that can, solve whatever the problem is and then you write a proposal to a government you are the responsible for delivering the services products, etc. Not the company that you found. Very hard to do this not a good business model. I recommend if that's what you want to do, but you start a consulting or advising company instead. Here selling directly to a comp, that is interested in federal contracting they pay you upfront for your advisory services. For instance, they may pay you a monthly retainer of $3500 a month to find government contracting opportunities for them. If that's something you're interested or you want to learn more about the government contracting business go to the following wink and talk to one of our advisors and they will walk through the options with you. govclose.com/strategy-call
Yes. Although the film and documentary industry is a bit different. Interesting niche and I've had clients that the government reached out to directly because of lack in participating small businesses.
The US Govt killed my small business. I was so proud of getting dun and bradstreet listed. I manufactured buildings (8x8-12x16'). The forest service came to me and wanted 15 buildings.... but they had to put a purchase order through to pay me the half down deposit that I required... so while I waited for the deposit I started building the buildings and setting them where they wanted them. I got them all done by their deadline and still no $$... I couldn't afford to keep the business open. I couldn't afford to buy my lumber in units to keep the buildings under tuff sheds pricing and be competitive. It took 18 months to finally get paid. I never want to work for the Govt in any contract ever again. Just a word to the wise. If the Govt doesn't want to pay you, they just don't.
The government didn't kill your business you killed your business. You said while you waited for deposit you started building the buildings in sending them where they wanted them. Why would you do all that work without getting paid?
If you are seeking federal funding you would probably need a sam registration (I would check that). I do know that Sam replaced DUNS with a UEI number recently.
im trying to not look at the screen, but he's describing things and i keep trying to look, but I can't see anything except the weirdest subtitles ive ever seen haha Idk if anyone said anything about this specifically, but i did see at least one comment that said the menu had changed. Subcontracting to a company w/past perf is a great way to get your foot in the door!
From 1:54 to 1:55 the search interface changes and you now have more options where you selected "notice type". I can't seem to figure out how to get my search to have those options. I only have "status" as show in the time before 1:54.
Help!
I'll do another video this. Quickly you need to expand all domains, and go into contract opportunities and you'll see the options
You definitely made the subtitles this way to farm comment engagement 😂
A un intended great strategy!
What is with the huge captions with the coloring ? It`s pretty hard on the eyes.
I have a solution to the worlds energy issues. How and where do I request funding?
SBIR.gov
Can u get business grants too
Go to SBIR.gov for this topic.
Does Past Performance factor into this process?
Every contract is different. However, past performance in general is extremely important in gov contracting. WInning your first contract is the hardest one. Subcontracting with a prime that has experience is a good way to get your feet wet.
What software do you use to manage all your contracts and operations (used in the video)?
GovClose.com
tip for startup without past performance?
Make sure you have commercial sales and past performance first. If you're a tech start up than I recommend the SBIR/STTR program. Just go to SBIR.gov
Any?
I have a Fence company and I am willing to pay to learn if it could be of use to us

very informative but these captions are painful
Appreciate this!
I loved the captions. ❤😊
my zoomer brain loves captions
@@mauiwowie444 sure I love captions too, I just prefer ones that don't cause seizures
Maybe I am doing something wrong, but I do not have all of the menu options you have (IE 6:41)
@@motivemachineworks6890 first click on contract opportunities. Then you should see the options.
@@govclose you are correct. Thanks for the help. This government contracting stuff is all new to me and definitely a bit tricky/ confusing at the moment for me personally. lol
How did you get to the drop down boxes to do "sources sought"? It just appeared out of no where on your screen
Thought I was the only one
It's under notice type
@@govclose notice type is not on ours....it seems like you edited something because your screen split at 1:55 . You never showed what you clicked on to get to the drop down boxes. This is bothering me. What did you do?
@@javontehardiman5364 email me at rick@dodcontract.com and we’ll send you a video on it
@@govclose doing now. Please check your email in 3 mins.
Not sure why this popped up in my feed. Not sure why I watched this to the end.
Did the website change, im trying to do this as i watch, but i don't see that dropdown and sources sought.
1. Click Search at the top of sam.gov
2. Click the plus next to All domains
3. Click Contract Opportunities
4. Click notice type and expand the options.
5. Scroll down to Sources Sought
there is no way to get to sources sought...
@@williambeeler-r9y don’t give up!
Choose notice type
my search criteria doesnt allow me to filter that way. I can only search by Federal Orgs. how can I change that?
scroll down in the comments. I addressed this in a longer response. Thanks for the comment !
tell me how to NOT USE my home address, but my virtual office!!!!!! let's see how good you are.
Very Nice content! it helps a lot of people thats why i also do videos about goverment contracting to help others.
Any chance of sharing your CRM setup?
Currently I'm not selling it, just using it with my clients and allowing my certification students to use it. Will let you know when I make it commercially available again!
@@govclose thank you.
Is it possible to do this w/o a company and myself contract a different company?
You might win 1 or 2 but this is not as business model that I advise.
Check out our videos on starting a consulting or advising business for government contractors. This is a much better path for someone in your position.
So, my question is do you have to be a business in that industry to middleman these contracts?
@@govclose Hey thanks a lot that makes a lot more sense I will check the link it out!
Okay, for a beginner, I wish you would have went more into the contract. I am still so lost here, but I will look at more videos.
You got this!
Would you say this is the same process for video production contracts?
Yes. Although the film and documentary industry is a bit different. Interesting niche and I've had clients that the government reached out to directly because of lack in participating small businesses.
@@govclose I have much to learn about this process.
I actually like the yellow flashing Yellow subtitle
Ha! Love it
The US Govt killed my small business.
You did not have a contract. Not understanding how it works is a personal issue, not a Government issue.
Do you have to register nonprofits on sam's now instead of dun?
If you are seeking federal funding you would probably need a sam registration (I would check that). I do know that Sam replaced DUNS with a UEI number recently.

im trying to not look at the screen, but he's describing things and i keep trying to look, but I can't see anything except the weirdest subtitles ive ever seen haha
Idk if anyone said anything about this specifically, but i did see at least one comment that said the menu had changed.
Maybe, and definitely dont have to delete this one but- make a basically same video without subtitles with updated info,
and include a written script for captions. because the auto generated captions can be just as distracting, given, they at times say wildly different things than being spoken
I know, sorry! Sub titles removed for most of our other videos.

Why does the government officials block emails?
They don't intentionally block emails. The security envelope (just like with civ email) will block email it deems suspicious or send it to junk.
You lost me at the nonstop bombardment of text flashing my eyes at the bottom of the screen, I think I’m gonna go blind

Great!
Please can I follow this process and win contracts in the US from outside the US
Certain contracts are restricted to the US, mostly data/software related. Many foreign companies engage in the process.
You can just have captions. You don't need the large flashing yellow type
Thank you!
