What I noticed at the end of the video, was something I wondered about the monitor as you were reviewing it. That is the ability for the screen to flip, it means you can stand the rower up once done with it but still use the monitor for other workouts if you need the space. That's a cool feature that could often be overlooked.

One of the most useful reviews I've seen for this setup. Going in depth on their specific studio experience (and prompting the viewer to consider studio vs water experience) brought up a lot I would not have considered otherwise. Definitely helped make the decision easy. (Now, tell me I'm not the only one wanting to dump glitter into the water tank ...)

I had a waterrower 20 years ago. It was quiet, worked well, and I wasn't too in to the monitor, so any drawbacks there didn't bother me. Right up until the water container cracked and it leaked out onto my carpets.
Bought a Concept 2, since that was what I used in college back in the day. Haven't looked back since.

Great review mate. If I’m honest I’m really happy with my JTX ignite air. I was originally aiming for the concept 2 but it was out of my budget. I’m ok with that though as the only drawback I can see with mine is a lack of connectivity to keep a track on how I’m doing, I can always pick up a pen and paper to do that though 🤣 (so old school🤦‍♂️). As you say they all have their place. Thanks for keeping this old feels motivated in the UK. 👊🙏☕️

I love my machine, so I’m not looking to change (Water Rower for long legged people) - BUT it’s cool to see others. HOWEVER - when I saw the studio experience I found myself yelling at the screen - WHY??? You are here!! AND - their set up, In my opinion , isn’t even a 10th as good as yours. I love that we see you from the side so that we can match your stroke. Thank you for all you do. My blood pressure went from 120/80 to 120/60 because of the rowing I do (with you motiving me through videos.) Thank you!

For me, I definitely like the Ergatta better with the more gaming focused design. That is what keeps me motivated to improve. Ergatta definitely has the open row option too, where you can set a time or distance goal instead of doing one of their workouts.

I am pretty big into jump roping and follow the zendudes. They are very enjoyable. You have the same vibe which I really appreciate. You have me excited to start my journey with my new waterrower. Happy New Year to you and thanks for your positive and approachable outlook. I plan on using your follow alongs and then creating my own workouts and using my seconds pro app. I have tons of my own workouts in that app and I strongly suggest it. I don’t think any of the monitors really suit my needs. Rather use my WiFi, Apple Watch and home network. To each their own. Thanks again.

I get what you say about the feeling of a water rower. It's nice to see this one allows your feet to be further apart, but the foot rest still looks to be pretty high. I can't get comfortable on any that I've tried (mainly out of curiosity as I wouldn't part with my Concept2). There is a really odd feel to the belt driven rowers for me. They do sound nice though.
Now, for the connected space, someone needs to come up with an effective way to (retro)fit a decent sized screen to a Concept2 - and then I'd still probably just row to my music as all thought becomes impossible when trying not to die in that last 500m ;)

I have a WaterRower and very happy. Watching video at 4:51 saw clip of studio experience - yuck on that! your set up - where I can see your full row to follow along - SOOOOO much better!!! I don’t need their experience when you have more than enough videos (*but keep making more.). Thank you for all the hard work you do. A waterrower will allow you to have a bunch of ASMR which would be cool to follow along with :-)

Great review! And I would love to find a water rower with a large screen and great speakers that just let me row down various around the world. That's all. I don't want the "studio" experience, I don't want some person yapping at me "you can do it!" Just let me be out on the water with pleasant music I can choose and my metrics. I don't need all that other stuff. Or they could offer it but let the main focus be on the water and all the other stuff is in a different tab on the screen.

I bought a cheapo used water rower on marketplace, made a couple tweaks to it, including the concept2 handle. Unfortunately the monitor is useless and doesn’t track anything well at all, but overall I like the water rower for home since it’s so quiet, and I’ll leave my higher intensity workouts to the studio and their concept2s when I need that extra level of data

Great review. We bought a Ezxfitness water machine with no monitor (always follow with you and do all your tutorials). Love the look of it and the smoothness. Does the amount ff water you put in the wheel effect the drag factor.and make it harder? I’m afraid to experiment due to Rui in the machine or causing a flood. Probably a very silly question. Many thanks or all your help and advice.

I ended up with a Hydrower and wish I had taken time to research rowing machines a little more. I did dodge a bullet because the first rower I looked at did not have the option to have it work without a subscription. Yeah! I did good there. I hate the games of rowing to the city and had no idea what the heck a split was about or even a spin rate. I tried some of the stuff built in and hated it, especially the scenic views where you go nowhere. Did not understand any of it and really didn't like the trainer guy built in with the system... mostly because I could not hear him. A few weeks back they added RUclips, Disney, etc. I found Dark Horse rowing and it was the first time I was motivated to actually do a 20 minute workout!!!! Thank you for that! Since then I have done three more and love them. I am sure that Hydrower has some great features for the person that knows something but I knew nothing and just wanted someone to motivate me. Thank you Dark horse. I truly hope that I fall in love with this machine and it doesn't sit in a corner collecting dust! LOL..

There would be only one reason for me to use a waterrower. The fact that quieter than a concept 2 and so more usable in an apartment. But my most important motivaton over the last years were the comparabe results because of the calibrated perfomance monitors with every rower over the planet. It´s the standard an so I know how good or how bad I am really. So was my decision to go in an gym to train on a concept 2. Personally I don´t need big monitors or some apps. I really need the concrete and right information of the performance monitor and the logbook. That´s enough for me.

if you use it, break a sweat, don't incur any joint/tendonitis issues then it's fine. But I think they were more popular moreso when C2 was still in its very early years. If it has any kind of monitor that lets you do intervals, that would be good. If not, you could use some kind of stopwatch type app or similar.

If you can't get taller (that made me laugh), work on your technique. Faster times are mainly about a powerful drive. Work those legs hard! Good technique is free speed. I'm only 5ft6 and I can row a 500m at around 1:49 with a stroke rate of 34spm. (Fitness stops me going faster right now!) Deadlifts, squats, lunges - all part of the key!

I have a sunny phantom (water) rower, which I have been using for about 3 months. I've been continuously learning about rowing over this time. your videos have been an excellent resource for my improvement. One thing I have noticed is the while rowing to yours and other's videos. I can't get my 500 meter split anywhere near the 2 or even 3 minute mark. I recently discovered the monitor on my machine only calculates meters rowed as a fixed distance per stroke. This means that no matter how much effort I put into each stroke, my distance is fixed. Machines like the concept 2 and other more expensive units use "perpetual motion" for meters per stroke which allows for more meters per stroke for more effort.
I like the rower, as it gives me a great workout, but it's disconcerting to see my monitor read 5 or 6 minute split when the person on the video is doing 1.5 or so. Of course, the video person is also doing 2000 plus meters while I'm only showing about 750.
I don't expect to match world records, but it would be nice to about least be at maybe 2 to 3 min splits instead of 5 or 6 while the video is at 1.5 :-)
If I had known this when considering my purchase. I would have made a different (more expensive) purchase.
Could you look into this and maybe do a video on it so people, can know this information before buying. I think this is very important information for anyone who is really wanting to use their rower in a serious manner, and should be advertised.
Thanks for doing your videos. They are helpful and useful. Please keep doing your great work.

@@DarkHorseRowing Glad to hear that. All one has to do is see your form in this video and it becomes clear you are needed. Most of the time you see a video of someone on a water rower, it seems like their butt is too close to being under them at the catch. They get little hip action, they are all legs and arms. Never with you.

Ha, I see what you did there. Honestly they’re just different. It’s what kind of experience you want. They’re heavily video based and studio classes. We’re more text based but highly community driven and we offer form feedback so they’re just very different products. Why not both :)

Why buy subscription ??? When I can watch a great instructor like you for nothing???

There's a lot to be said for paying a coach for organization and a plan. Random workouts are great for a little bit but rarely help you in the long run.

the problem is if you do not the have internet or the go bankrupt, the machine is useless. they should allow one to fully program the rowers to any type of workout you want to do. i like the app that you could subscribe to like pelton. if you want it than you can airplay it to a large tv. the products are over priced. but with app if you want instructions. dark horse rowing should due this paid instruction for different levels but on youtube. people know you are a expert ob rowing and youtube is much easier to use. i can watch it on my tv.

Just 2cents...I watch your videos regularly, but the change of video shots ,side shots while you're talking is so distracting .Keeping the shot of you talking directly to the camera keeps the personal touch that , I think makes your videos better than others to watch. I worry that you're trying to improve on something you already had perfect.
