  • Hornady now offers the 450 Bushmaster 395 grain Sub-X bullet for reloading! I try to create a subsonic load using Hodgdon Trail Boss powder and another. Let's see how they shoot out of my Ruger 450 Bushmaster Ranch rifle!

      Trail Boss is a bit hard to fine, it is popular and goes quick. But it really was going a bit too slow for me, I think IMR 4198 will work out better. Hey, thanks for watching!

    Great info! As a newbie reloader I’ve been contemplating a load for a suppressed SBR-.. something just a tad hotter than the factory sub x for hornady.. aiming for 1050fps out of an 11” barrel. Don’t forget to post the further work ups!

      Hornady has load data for the 395 sub-x bullet on their website, but it is supersonic speed, but it might work for your 11" barrel. Also Hodgdon has Hornady 395 sub-x load data for subsonic speed on their (Hogdon) website. Just go to the Hodgdon load data center, choose 450 Bushmaster, select the 395 grain bullet. Hey, thanks for watching!

      Yeah, 450Bm started out as an AR-15 cartridge, but when hunters found out that it could be used in areas that are "short straight walled case" limited ( no 45/70) it took off. Also the reason Winchester created the 350 legend. Take care and have a great day!

    Hello John
    I have been loading 450g cast to make subs in my 450 bolt gun to great effect. Power is more then any 44 mag pistol!! Unique, Green dot & Herco have been used.
    BECAREFUL W/TRAILBOSS!!
    It is NOT LO PRESSURE!! It does NOT like to be compressed!!!
    Load as you advised from 80-99% fill. NO COMPRESSION.
    The Bushmaster runs about 38K. If you begin to see flat orimers your likeky will above that pressure as generally most SR primers wont show deformation till past 45K.
    Primers alone are a VERY POOR show of actual pressures.

    • @30-06john
      @30-06john  Год назад +1

      I have used Trail Boss in a few cartridges, as long as it is not compressed, works well. That is why I referenced Hodgdon's process in the video.
      Unique and other pistol type powders is common in cases like the 45/70 so it can be used in the 450BM, but there is not a lot of referenced load data so I probably won't be doing a video on it.
      One advantage of using a bolt gun for the 450Bm is that it can operate at pressures a lot higher than an AR-15 and factory ammo, sort of a safety factor. But my handloaded Bear loads are significantly hotter than factory ammo and should not be used in an AR, which I did state in that video.
      450BM is a great cartridge, glad you are having fun shooting yours!

    I have the Ruger also and with the 250 ftx, I only crimp a tiny amount if at all and accuracy is great using 4227, but like you and others, I was looking for a sub load for the 395 gr......With the 250 ftx, I measured for my chamber and I found my best oal was 2.300, but obviously that is my gun and anyone else should properly measure. Saying that, my main wonder was, being a bolt gun, whether the load you did needed a crimp at all and did you play with the OAL afterward......thanks...George
    4198 seems hard to find, but I still have TB, so perhaps I might be able to increase OAL a tiny amount to get another few tenths of grain without compressing......the 250 ftx has a fairly long soft point which would give a false OAL compared to the 395, so that has to be taken into consideration

    • @30-06john
      @30-06john  Год назад

      I found that having some crimp improved accuracy with my handloads. On my Ruger ranch 450 Bushmaster, it is a bit finicky feeding from the magazine if the rounds are too long, even though the magazine has plenty of length. Factory 250 feeds fine. In the past I did work up subsonic handloads with TB and 300gr jacketed and they worked fine. I will probably work on shorter OAL with the 395gr so they feed better. Another powder I want to try is A-5744. Thanks for your info and Merry Christmas!

    • @George1mac
      @George1mac Год назад

      @@30-06john Hmmm, I have not had any feed problems with the 250 FTX at 2.300. I ordered some 395's and will be giving them a go in the near future...I will measure with the gauge and drop back about the same amount just to see how they fly...where that leaves me with length is yet unknown. Christmas was good, but it was a cold one here in TN... it was always like that when I was young. Best to you for the New Year!!!

      @@30-06john Well, I finally got around to chronograph a couple of loads for my Ruger Ranch bolt...I made a wood dowel piece to fit in a sized case and used it to measure length of bullet in case at approximately .535 which would barely touch a load of 11.9 gr of trailboss without compressing it. After measuring a jam bullet and confirming with Hornady OAL gauge of 2.290 to my lands (which is 2.023 measuring from Ogive by Hornady comparator), I loaded to 2.265 OAL and checked to make sure the bullet fed and cleared well. I figure this is about the max of TB I can load....it produced a 760 fps velocity in my gun, but it shot bullet holes...three shots in the same slightly ragged hole. From what I read, the 395gr bullet is supposed to expand down to 900fps, so this does not appear to be fast enough for the purpose. I scratched my head about the lower velocity than your 11.2 gr, but I am using CCI primer 400 which, maybe, makes difference?? Perhaps some unburned powder?? I don't know as I surely figured increased powder would make increased velocity.
      I loaded 26.2 gr of 4198 to 2.240 and that shot a 1" vertical string center to center of outside holes at 981fps....I have room to increase OAL and increase powder a touch, so I figure that will be next step to see if the group will tighten. My sight in is at 35 yards with chrono approximately 15 ft in front of bench. I have some 5744 on the way and I hope to try it....also have read some about a few who have used Unique and perhaps Red Dot, but man at store told me he has not been able to get any Red Dot in inventory for near two years

    • @30-06john
      @30-06john  Год назад

      You have a lot of data here. Your Trail Boss load COAL is .60" longer than mine so even though you have more powder, the longer length would reduce pressure and velocity. Might be the temp also, it was 15F when I shot those loads, might have affected my chronograph. Primers make a difference too.
      Your IMR 4198 load is very close to my results. As for other powders, A-5744 should be very good. Unique has been used for the 45/70 for many years, although not much actual data out there, but should work in the 450BM. Red Dot too, but to a lesser extent. Just be aware that Unique and Red Dot loads are running at a much higher pressure than the 4198 or A-5744 loads, even if they are at the same velocity. I am sure you will find a good load with either IMR 4198 or A-5744.

      It should with a broadside shot, not sure with a frontal shot. I am thinking about doing a penetration test at various velocities to see how well it performs.

    Nice video. I have a couple of observations. Notice that the Hornady factory loaded 395 ammo have LR primers rather than the SR primers. Another excellent powder you might like to try is AA-5744, which is also very bulky. I chronographed the Hornady factory loads at 987 fps from my Ruger Number One with 20" barrel. SR-4759 is an excellent powder, but has been dis-continued. However I have several cans on hand.

      Do you reload the factory Hornady brass with a LR primer or Starline with the SR primer? I have a lot of the factory loaded Hornady LR brass but can't find any subsonic load data. I'm wondering if I should use the supersonic Hornady load data and walk it down until it is subsonic?

      I am using original Hornady small rifle primer brass. Hodgdons load data website has subsonic data for the 395 sub-x bullet using small primer brass. I would use the same data and see how it shoots with large primer brass. I hope this helps!

      I load both Hornady brass with LR primers, and Starline brass with SR primers. I can't detect any difference between the two. I can't find any subsonic load data, so I'd be very careful at reducing power charges below any in the loading manuals. I do know that Unique is used successfully in subsonic loads for the 45-70, but I don't know about the 450 BM. You might contact Hornady. I have found them very helpful in the past. Give them a try. Good luck. Keep us informed. @@BetweentheCheeks00
