Rather than use plastic tape I cut strips of old t-shirts, socks, any stretchable fabric into strips to use as ties. This works great!
If you don't have any suitable fabric, thrift shops (op shops) will always have some.
“Throw them away” I hope you mean compost by that because.. why waste it when you can turn it into a gorgeous soil?

Hey, i have a 3 ft stem of American beauty that has bore fruit many times abd is 8 years old, and i was wondering if i could cut it into a bunch of pieces and root then, and if so, how big do the pieces have to be, and also, how long would i have to wait before the plants were able to have fruit? Is there any drawbacks about doing so?

You can just leave it, they will heal and push out new growth.
Where can I buy your cuttings?
Throw them away? Why not place those suckers on the soil to block uv rays
They will propagate roots and take over your pot.
hey bro how are you?
Great, thank you.
Please help me Richard!🙏 We live in Michigan & are totally bitten by the Dragon Fruit bug.😀 We need info on how to make our trellis & soil mix as lightweight as Possible! We will have to bring them up 2 steps & indoors this fall. I am disabled & have to get help(sons) to move all my plants inside(quite a few). But my sons & I Really want to make this happen! The plants we have are the yellow & the red outside with white flesh that my eldest bought at the grocery store, & decided to see if the seeds would germinate. Boy did they! We have lots of little ones, but we have grown 6 plants in 2 pots that are about 2ft tall. Up until this week(finding & subscribing to Epic Gardening & through him=you), we have done this wrong, Way too small pots. We have trained them up 2" coir tubes.😜 We have green thumbs & grow lots of stuff inside & out. So despite all our mistakes we have enough plants to start in the right sized pots they need. but it has to be portable. Any ideas you have would really help us. Thank you for sharing your enthusiasm & Knowledge of growing this magical plant.
Why did my dragon fruit grow a 5 sided stem, not 3 sided
Hi Richard .. I like the way you explain so clear and easy to follow.. I have a question that need your advice.. how come some of the branches are getting a lot of yellow spots on my dragon trees ? Is that too late use the cooper insect spray to kill those spots . They don’t come out any fruits because of that .
You plant it only in pot? Or you plant direct in soil and you pun a pot?
I will be moving to Sacramento, will the hot summer dry heat affect my dragon fruit plants?
Bro I planted it but my tree catched infection and died. I am from India and in india this is rare so could you please send me a parcel please.
If you wanted to go the organic fertilizer all around, is their any you would recommend? Or have you already done a video on this and i missed it?
I can tell how much you love these plants. You passion is real. It is truly inspiting.
Thanks Richard, you videos are so valuable, that is all I am doing in my free and relaxing time, you have a such nice, natural style of talking and teaching, always good tips
I am running out of space at my home, is it ok to plant 2 different varieties in the same trellis same container? Im thinking 2 palora yellow cuttings and 2 White sapphire cuttings?
Hi Richard, wuick question I went to replant a pink dragon fruit but found root was starting to rot as it wasn't potted properly with enough drainage. I cut the root and leaving it to dry and will then try to get it growing asgain. Will this work or should i just ditch it. Thanks for sharing all your learnings.
Man in my country you get No cuttings so you have get your drsgonfruit thru seeds:( 2-3year old seedling is thinner than my little Finger and you Cut of those big cuttings i am cryingxD
Is it impossible to grow in England? We can't even buy deagonfruit here but I am so curious about them
It's possible to grow in England. I know of 2 people who are growing over there. Just put your pot on wheels and bring it in when the temperature gets below 5° C. You will also need a good growlight for winter.
I live in Washington State so it's close to England weather. As the previous commenter said I just have it on wheels and grow light. I also researched a bit about which varieties withstand cold temperature better.
So I live in Las Vegas and seems very dry here. I’m watering my newly planted rooted cutting every two days because the soil dries up and doesn’t feel moist 3-4 inches down. I give it 16oz of water at a time and using a 12” terracotta pot and saucer with a drainage hole in the bottom. Am I doing it right?
If my main branch (6inches) has rust from winter and there is new growth from the base, should I start over and cut the 6 inch main branch and hope the new growth is healthier?
No need to cut them, now that the weather is warmer they will heal on their own. Keep soil slightly on the dryer side and dont over water. This causee the cactus rust. Continue to let it grow and reach the top of canopy.
I have done cuttings and potted them after drying. How many days is required for root development?
Give or take a few days it should start showing roots in a week. Depends on the type
Arial roots have grown
@@DrTitilDattaSamanta if arial roots came out then it's a good chance that roots have grown as well?? How long have u had the cutting in a pot/ground?
13 days now
@@DrTitilDattaSamanta oh yea itll definently have roots.
R u selling your cutting?
Just wondering why you don’t mulch the containers, do you just find it unnecessary?
Mulching caused ants to build nest under it so I don't mulch my pots.
Hi, do you know if dragon fruits will only flower on new branches or one-year branches?
Bisa terjemah ke bahasa indonesia
Hey Richard am new to the Chanel and jus starting planting the fruits.. Can u tell me how long will I at least have to wait before I can see fruits
How many time per week do you have to water?
Hi Richard,
It's my first time to plant a dragon fruit from a cutting. I live in Pennsylvania and don't know whether I will be successful. I don't know whether my cutting is growing or have roots. It's been more than a month in the shade.
Hello, nice Dragon Fruits,💕🙏 and Good Tips how to grow them. Iwill try to do same thank you, Watching you from Athens Greece, Godbless Always
I'm from Barbados in the West Indies so I have no problem with the weather, we're summer all year round . My question do I cut the roots of the limbs they grow in the middle of the plant
No the aerial roots are good. They help support the plant and can absorb moisture and nutrients
How to recognize the variety of dragon fruit from its buds or plant??
Hii RICHARD," is it good to transplant DF while it is at flowering season????
Yes, as long as it's not actively flowering you can transplant them.
How many months outside does dragonfruit need? Can it fruit in zone 7b, coming inside in the winter (no greenhouse).
What do you do if you have more than one dragon fruit growing up from the same spot ? Do you just pick the strongest looking one and cut the others at the level of the dirt, or should you un-pot it and try to divide by the roots?
Send me a cutting to Colorado buddy
Hi Richard, I live in Washington State. I have tried two years growing dragon from cut and failed due to cold winter weather even put them in a greenhouse. Do you have any dragon fruit that is hardy? Can you send some cutting to me? Thanks in advance.
I see you plant multiple varieties, do some do well with others? Or is it just where you have space to allow the cutting to grow?
All of my varieties have been doing well together.
@@GraftingDragonFruit Do you make sure they are the same size when they are planted. Or do you add new cuttings to establish containers?
Question....if u take a cutting from a plant n it grows up can u use that cutting to pollinate the mother plant? Or no cuz it's a clone?
No, because its a clone. Unless its a self fertile variety. It wont be able to use to pollinate.
Your variegated plants are looking gooood.
Thank you kindly
Very nice 👍 good video 😍📸
Thank you so much 👍
I've had some success and some failure. The plants are doing good but my cuttings are not rooting and seem to just slowly die. But my seeds from the store-bought fruit are taking off! Of course, I don't want to wait years for fruit but it's nice to have something growing. Can't wait to see the new rooting method in the next video. Greetings from AZ!
Ok Nepal chhote Lal tharu good 👍 hii hallo kchh ok
I attached the wrong side of my cutting to the post and now the aerial roots are growing way from the post. Should I dig it out to turn it around or leave it as is?
You can leave it as is, its growing to find surface to climb on and collect moisture from the air.
I’m curious if you grow with a wooden trellis frame how kind does the trellis last ? When it rots is it possible to save the dragon fruit plant and replace the trellis ?
I use Cedar wood, this wood is more compact and naturally resistant to mold and rot. My very first trellis that I built lasted about 7-8 years before we had to tear it down for remodeling.
I’m planning of having at least the bottom part that goes into the ground lightly charred, as that was the traditional method Viking’s used to make wood more water resistant where I live/my climate.
Especially ends of logs that would be going into the ground.
I think Japan have a sort of similar method called shou sugi ban. But I’m not planning on using any oil.
It looks really cool, and if I manage to get sort of good at the technique, I’m planing on doing the whole wood trellis.
Thank you Richard. I have suffered a concussion, so it's hard to follow tutorials and informational videos. Your style has made it easy for me to understand. I think I'm ready to go at it.
so does grow help flavor at all or just bulk them up?
Grow helps mainly with growth. No flavoring.
Love dragon fruit specially the dark dark purple and yellow💋🥰
Hey Richard. I found your channel just when my dragon fruit cuttings began to sprout after 4 months of winter. I like your episode style of videos. They are very helpful and informative. I'm going to follow your advice totally.
I wanted to know, since you plant 4 cuttings in a pot, there could be a stem that is away from the sun, so do we need to rotate the pot every few days.
I want to know because my pots are placed against a wall and the cutting towards the wall will not get direct Sun.
Thank you for following! The cutting that’s away from sun will still grow and climb to the top of the trellis. No need for rotating the pot. Once it reach to the canopy it will flourish and get all the sun it needs.
♥️🇧🇩♥️🇧🇩♥️🇧🇩♥️🇧🇩
Love your detailed explanations of dragon fruit growing& maintenance. Would you do a video of tipping the tops so that they spread & then the process you do after tipping. Also, what do you do when the branches that drape over the canopy get too long?
Sure thing! ruclips.net/video/38lDCgHIifM/видео.html
Tip those branches so they stop growing. This will force new shoots to grow.
Great video!
Holy cow that is a lot dragon fruits!!
Good to know. Why do you grow in 20 gallon pots versus the ground? Is there an art and science to what three DF plants you put in each pot? Looking forward to the next video! Thanks!
Good question! I grow in pots mainly because it gives me the freedom to move them around. Also if I didn't like a certain variety its very easy to remove and replace. I also like that the black containers contract heat so it warms up the roots to keep the productive.
