it's a very interesting story how Edie Brickell became the lead singer of the New Bohemians, their original lead singer didn't show up for a concert and one of the band members asked if anyone in the audience could sing, Edie was in the crowd, jumped up on the stage and free styled to their music, they fired their original lead singer and hired Edie on the spot, true story.
I don't know... I think this sounds suspicious. Didn't she know them already.🤔
@@samuelgates5935 i'm not sure if she knew them, I watched Mtv a lot when I was younger and I remember them being interviewed and them talking about it
@@samuelgates5935 Kinda. They all knew each other from High School, but she wasn't a part of their scene or clique. She joined the band long after they had already formed.
My favorite Brickell song is Good Times
she replaced natalie merchant
R.I.P Loretta Lynn age 90, thank you for all the music you gave us over the years
3:56 one of the most underated guitar solos of all time.
Too bad it was ruined by the terrible choice in pedal effect
I agree!
This song has been sampled most notably by Brand Nubian (“slow down”) and Intro (“love thang”). Remember this song as a kid.
I love this song, so glad you're giving it a play. Pronunciation note, her name is Edie (like seedy) Brickell (Brick-L).
I love Edie! “Circle” is my absolute favorite 🖤
This song struck me hard when it came out! Went right out and bought the album! Still in my playlist all these years later! 💯💯
yes, the whole album is great...
Brilliant song by fellow Texan Edie Brickell. React to her song CIRCLE from this same album. This album was released my freshman year in college and it was comforting to me to listen to these songs. 👍👍👍
Always liked this quirky tune by Mrs. Paul Simon. As a wannabe guitar player I latched onto the envelope filter in the guitar solo, hadn't heard that sound before. I don't recall if they ever had another hit.
An absolute classic. One of the crazy things is how the music and her voice sort of lose you off into this dreamland head space, and then you're so not ready for the fire guitar solo. And these lyrics have so many layered meanings. Most every song on this album is great. Circle is another classic.
Love the simplicity of the lyrics, it feels more like a mantra, easy to sing with, has a poppy funk vibe, cute song.
"What I Am" deals with the need for simplicity in expression. In the lyric, Edie Brickell was poking fun of folks who overshare their spiritual beliefs, expounding their thoughts on the universe to anyone who will listen.
& the irony is she's making fun of them so she's no better😉
@@salty-tomatoand you’re calling everyone out but you’re no better….and I’m calling you out but God knows I’m no better. Stop! Before we get too deep 😮
Saw them open for the Grateful Dead in 1991...
Love this reaction. BJ totally gets it and totally grooves with it. Love this track, and I always forget how totally awesome that funky Wah-wah synth solo is. Absolutely great, a 90s classic /class act!
Her "Edie Brickell - Good Times" (1994) video was included in the Windows 95 system package on my old Compaq computer and I still watch it every few months on RUclips; it never gets old.💞 edit: p.s. She's married to Paul Simon.✨
Very cool!
Ya that tune was a great little Easter egg
🤯🤯
Pronunciation of her name is E Dee Brick L, btw. But this song has a vibe for sure. I keep returning to it. Love your channel!
So glad you found Edie and this great song, she's definitely one of a kind. She did a bluegrass album just a few years ago with Steve Martin (yes, that Steve) and she and husband Paul Simon did some very good home releases during the 2020 isolation. PS My favorite song y'all have done in a bit.
Pretty Little One came into my recommended feed last year, gave it a listen and loved it.
What a cool tune remember seeing them do this on Saturday Night Live.
Sweet! Very chill, lyrically, easy to sing along to.
One of a kind , kind of song! Glad you liked it. BJ, you hit it, right on point and Asia, I agree, her voice is sweet. 🙏❤️✌️🔥
I used to listen to this whole album multiple times a day when it came out (on cassette)
This song and group really ushered in the 1990's new sound. This came out in 88 and was vastly, and strikingly different than the 80's synthesizer music of the past decade.
Some could swear this is from the 1990s, but it does have a 1990s vibe...though it was made in the 1980s
BJ your quite eloquent and insightful. I really enjoy your assessment.
She’s married to Paul Simon. You guys should check out Jewel (her debut album is full of great songs) and The Indigo Girls.
I’ve been waiting for someone to react to the Indigo Girls!
@@Pahdopony underrated for sure.
This whole album is brilliant. Very underrated. Love Like We Do is fantastic too.
Yes I've been waiting for you two to share Edie Brickell.. there's something so beautiful about the actual video as well
Edie had the sweetest smile OMG
One of the benefits of listening to people react to old songs and albums is that I get to remember all of the great music I've heard over the years so now I'm going to listen to Ghost of a Dog.
FINALLY people are reacting to this. One of my few non-metal jams when it came out.
Hey Guys! They did a song called "The Circle" that I dearly love. Would really like to hear what you think of it also please?
Good Times, one of my all time favorites by Edie.
Edie Brickell was born in Oak Cliff and went to schools in Dallas, including college at SMU.
The moment she jumped on that stage straight beast.
My band in the 90’s was recording our local cd at a studio in Dallas in the guitar player Kenny Withrows loft . I played nerf basketball with Edie .. no joke
I love Edie's version of A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall !! A Dylan original... It gives me chills on Born on the 4th of July !!!
This brings back memories of my junior year of high school. This song was all over the place then. You don't get songs like this anymore.
This whole album is worth checking it out it’s has some very laid back songs with deep meaning. Used to chill to this in summer when it came out ✌🏼
Her name is really pronounced E-Dee Brick-kel, although now she answers to Mrs. Paul Simon. As in the Simon from Simon and Garfunkel. Her voice is very sensual.
Simple song, great message. Another great reaction. This was a time when some very "hippie" sounds were being revived in new music.
Yup! Off the top of my head, that same year I remember the first Lenny Kravitz song "Let Love Rule" and Tears for Fears went full Sgt. Pepper with "Sowing the Seeds of Love", but there were tons more. Especially on the UK Indie scene . Even the Daisy Age of Hip-Hop around that time (Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Jungle Brothers) was considered a Hippie-fied extension of Golden Age Hip-Hop.
Probably one of the most original songs that I can remember. Deep lyrics. I believe that she is a fellow Texan to boot and is married Paul Simon.
This was my jam yall🥰
Great reaction Asia & BJ. When this came out I thought she sounded similar to Carly Simon back in the day, and I remember going to buy the CD. I haven't heard this in a long time, but I think I could find many occasions these days to use the line "What I am is what I am; are you what you are or what?" LOL. That may just be my new motto 😅.
Glad you enjoyed it
pronounced E-dee Bric-kell, just thought you would like to know, used to see her in Dallas before she became big. Love y'alls reactions.
Always liked this song...It has a reggae type beat and the lyrics are interesting...Great vocals too!!!
Finally someone reacting to it. Love that little song
one of my fave 80s songs ♥
I loved this song back in high school...
Edie is the long time wife of Paul Simon of Simon and Garfunkel
Edie Brickell and Linda Perry are probably my favorite artists from this genre. Record labels don’t seem to allow bands to be their true authentic self like The New Bohemians.
Brand Nubian used this sample for their classic song Slow down.
Great song
What a great song! I saw her & New Bohemians, in concert, about 31 years ago. Blue Rodeo opened for them. Talk about a serious one-two punch! One of the best concerts I've been to! Shooting Rubberbands at Stars is a legit album, start to finish. She's still married to Paul Simon, all these years later, by the way.
BJ nailed it. Great show guys.
This song was sampled by the rap group, Brand Nubians for their song "Slow Down." BTW, Lord Jamal, (Eminem hater) was in this group.
Great, great tune! Edie changed music at that time.
Play Circle.......good tune!!!
Pro-Tip: Google Translate is pretty accurate at giving you the correct pronunciation of any phrase or name. Just pop it into the English side and hit the speaker icon🔉.
This song brings back so many memories. My daughter was born shortly after this was released. I have pictures of me feeding her in a rocking chair while listening to this. Yeah, I'm old.
Fairly recently she sang in Steve Martin's bluegrass band
Asia Edie is a Dallas Oak Cliff girl! ❤❤❤❤
FYI, the 1st Lady of country music passed away 2day @ th age of 90, th Coal Miners Daughter, Miss Loretta Lynn, she’s performed W/ Kid Rock, Jack Black, Dolly, Conway, and many, many, many more, in her honor Y’all should check out th movie, Coal Miner’s Daughter, her life’s story, from rag’s 2 riches, and 4/ Halloween Y’all should check out th original uncut version of Halloween 😎👍
Indigo Girls song Closer to Fine would be a good follow up song to this one.
I’ve been waiting for someone to do indigo girls- not one person yet!
I've always loved Edie Brickell. Did anyone mention that she's married to Paul Simon of Simon and Garfunkel?
Me encanta esa cancion, la escucho desde los años 90's, es muy buena. un abrazo desde Colombia.
Love this one! 🥰
This song was way ahead of its time I thought it came out in the early 90s but it came out in 1988 I wasn’t far off but it wasn’t the 90s This song has major Natalie Merchant vibes The Natalie Merchant song it reminds me of the most is (Jealousy) which didn’t come out until almost 10 years later Not in subject matter They just sound a hell of a lot alike💯🎶💙🔥
I know you had this song stuck in your head for three or four days after you made this video It’s one of those songs💯😂
Wife here..Ok.., This was the FIRST ALTERNATIVE song that my friends and I Absolutely Loved...as most of the music we liked as teens was quite different from this!!.."Take it or leave it message"..Sooo Well said..BJ....Hey Asia ..,
I think she has a nice voice as well..Fun Fact..She 's married to the great Paul Simon.."Very Catchy"..
That song was huge when it came out. For more women of the 90s you should check out Alanis Morrisette and Cheryl Crow, they have more than one great song to react to. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶
Adding Michelle Shocked Toni Childs to your list of women of the 90s (and late 80s for some). 🙂
Love this song. An all-time great one, imo .
I always thought the lyric was "shove me in the shallow water ... " , but google says it is "choke" , not "shove" . 😮
I’m sitting here having a debate with myself, because I’ve been fully singing "shove me in the shallow water," since 1988… 😟
Awe…love this…was my best friends song in jr high…of course we didn’t understand the meaning at 13 lol
I was wondering about the line Choke me in the shallow water Too An interviewer asked Ms Brickell What did she mean by “Choke me in the shallow water”?
Her answer "Everybody was getting so deep in terms of making things up-“Does this mean this and does that mean that?” I was just irritated, like, just kill me now before I get out there and lose myself and my sense of who I am".
Check out their song "I Do", it's my favorite.
Have you guys reacted to Eddie Brickell's song - Good Times ??? This song is very beautiful... It's worth it
Edie Brickell's made a few albums with Steve Martin (yes that Steve Martin) in the last decade or so. Talented interesting woman. I always thought the New Bohemians had a little bid of Grateful Dead feeling, late 70's Dead. Used to have this album somewhere
She's saying keep your thoughts simple and don't think too much
Asia & BJ, if I'm not mistaken, I think you guys mentioned you were from near the Dallas area?? Edie Brickell was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. The New Bohemians were a group of friends she went to high school with but she didn't join their group until later when she was invited on stage to sing at one of their gigs.
Love this song..by the way she's married to Paul Simon....30 years.
Circle is AMAZING
She is married to Paul Simon from Simon and Garfunkel and there is quite an age difference !
I am seeing the "Choke me in the shallow water before I get too deep" working if you think of it in terms of a relationship where she is saying tell me we are just temporary before I go hearing wedding bells, type situation.
I thought it was chuck
“Ghost of a Dog” (1990) by Edie would be a great reaction . 🎸
Talk about a May/December romance. She married Paul Simon when she was 26 and he was 50. They have 3 kids together.
GOOD TIMES.
Great album
At 17, I thought this song was sooo profound, lol...
Me too lol
Now I know the errors of my ways then😉
This song became popular as I was taking my college introduction to philosophy course. Needless to say song struck a weird cord with me.
it's actually "SHOVE me in the shallow water"
I always thought it was "shove" , too , but I just googled it -- it is "choke" . 😮
Musically there are definitely influences of The Grateful Dead and The Doors. Lyrically it's Popeye's motto. I yam what I yam and that's all that I yam. ✌️
I forgot about this song! Edie is or was married to Paul Simon. Love your channel. I'm stuck on your movies reaction channel now. Ya'll killed me watching the shining. 🤣...It was hilarious. Thx
Fun fact....married to Paul Simon for the last 30 yrs....must be some great jams at their get togethers
I think it's gibberish, but sounds good. They were trippy, like a resurgence of Deadhead music.
90's had it all. Lisa Lobe is another one to check out.
"I yam what I yam and that's all what I yam" - Popeye
alanis morrisette has always given me an Edie Bricknell vibe....
She's from Oak Cliff
I thought she was saying, "chuck me in the shallow water ". As in, 'throw me in the shallow water'.
Comes from an age when music didn't max out the EQ output. There is range to the volume in this song. So much music now days needs to be turned down and doesn't have quiet areas to accentuate the build up to loud.
Great tune!! ❤👍🏽
She is also Paul Simons wife of 25 years.
BTW YOU SAID YOUR MOM BORN IN '55 ME TOO!!
My brother can't stand this song and my sister and I would get him EVERY CHANCE WE COULD, LOL! That's EEdee Brick-EL :)
