They had no free games and all was paid, like 4.99$. The games like Assasins Creed, Prince of Persia, India Jones, Pirates of Carribean and 100s of other games were all the same shit with differnt skinned enemies and slightly different levels. Worse than Fifa. Today play store is full of protype looking android games but there is also This is War of Mine, Little Nightmares, Don't Starve and ports like Portal, Half life, GTA. Late to the party here but a good look back. There are a few misrepresentations though. First, the initial phone you show is running Symbian 60 5th Edition which was basically a touch layer grafted on top of the non-touch Symbian 60 Series 3 OS. It was a stop-gap measure to hold people over until the touch-enabled OS was ready. The first phones running the true touch-enabled Symbian^3 OS were the N8 and E7. The actual lineage was Symbian Series 60v3 (non touch) -> Series 60 5th Edition -> Symbian^3 -> Symbian Anna -> Nokia Belle. In fact, Belle was a huge improvement and modernization over Anna which was a small incremental update of Symbian^3.Second, Meego is not related to Symbian in any way shape or form. Symbian's roots came from the Psion EPOC OS (which was more or less DOS-based). Meego is the successor to Maemo 5 (using in the Nokia N900) which is built on the Debian Linux platform. The only reason why the iconography was similar was they were being developed at the same time and Nokia was initially positioning Meego to replace Symbian but that idea was dropped when they moved to Windows Phone.Meego was WAY ahead of its time and would've faired very well if it had quality app support.

Wifi was disconnecting or not connecting, they had there those email app services which I could never had them worked with any email, keyboard was horrible, touch screen insensitive...
I remember nokia 500 which i owned with belle OS(upgraded from s60 to Anna then to Belle). It had features which i still miss today. You could play a song in your phone while on call and let the other person listen to it.
If they could add more apps to the ovi store, and combine the fluency from meego and the elegance and android like experience, they would have done very well....
Now imagine if Nokia had invested in keeping Symbian or Meego alive till now... Would be an amazing OS, Symbian Belle was years ahead of Android, and practilly didn't had lag in the 700(?) series, which had a very weak hardware, but was better than android 4.4
The Symbian Anna(?) shown in the video, was not the last or latest smartphone released by Nokia before switching for Meego/Windowsphone. The last one didn't had lag practically, but Ellop wanted the marketing focused on Windowsphone, and we saw where things had gone...

The Ovi store! I remember there even being commercials for it back in then. Was not the best experience. Also, I remember the guitar pick stylus that came with. Also, I notices that you bought the Lumia from Australia, because it's locked to the Optus network.
Symbian OS 7.0s s60 V2 and Symbian OS 7.0. S80...good times...still the best mobile OS for me. I liked Belle too. Multitasking was not "primitive" it was very similar to PC even in 2003, much better than android's. Shame system got killed.

The Nokia N9 was pretty great. It's unfortunate they threw their lot in with Windows (even though those were great too, and quite underappreciated). I still don't know why Nokia spent the time and resources into meego, released it and immediately announced it was obsolete, unsupported, and wouldn't be continued as they moved to windows.
I'm 4 years too late, but Symbian is not related to Linux. It's a closed-source microkernel that came from EPOC and Psion in the 90's. Also yeah Nokia really should have gone with MeeGo instead of selling to Microsoft, I think in future students will case study this whole saga as the biggest mistake in consumer electronics ever.

I used s60v3 the most back then on my E63 and n73. It's a fun os where I installed emulators and hacks. S60v5 looked promising. But I'm on the fence with touchscreen interface back then. My buddy back in college had nokia n8 and it looked cool. I heard sony ericson had units that run with symbian too. The meego on the other hand looked promising and ahead of it's time. It's sleek and attractive.

Wish you'd talk more about apps. I was crazy back then for symbian phones had a 3650, 6600, N70 and the N80 and the stuff you could do with it cause of the symbian os was amazing. You could install mp3 players (the phones back then didn''t support mp3's), movie players (Smart Movie player), the IR Remote control for tv's,vcr's,.. The symbian games were also amazing - there was one car game similar to micro machines that had multiplayer support via bluetooth, you could also install all sorts of emulator. I had the nes one. primitive multitasking? S60 / SYMBIAN (aside from what blackberry used) was & STILL is the only OS that actually has REAL multitasking ! Android (except from dual-windows, which was available from Android N (7.0) upwards) & iOS employ App switching* !S60 could even multitask app processes, something these current "smart" 🙄 phone OSes Android & iOS for the most part, CANT do.... unfortunately.

I always had a thought that the moving of Nokia from using Symbian to Android was a WRONG MOVE, it's a practically late to come down to the market of android phone because SAMSUNG has become the "Nokia" at that market. Nokia trying to compete with their legendary name as a weapon while giving standart hardware spec are pityfull when there are other brand that trying to compete SAMSUNG with high hardware spec with a low price product seems to work that out. So in my Opinion if Nokia can't do the same move at the market they should invest to develop Symbian to make it comparable with Android or iOS, because Symbian doesn't need a high hardware to run so it could maybe cost less to build the phone. the latest Nokia Symbian are Nokia X7 which run with 680 Mhz cpu and 256 mb ram. that's even lower than iOS hardware spec.
Nokia just need more Dev's and to expand the symbian environment in the world ... cause' at that time symbian was more snappy, optimised than android. I just wished if they didn't gave up this early.....
One think I really didn't like with Nokia is how they reskinned their feature phones to look like symbian phones (cough *asha line*cough) and they were secretly running the Serious 40 OS instead. I know this because I bought one but I knew what they were doing and I didn't care but others were really confused and didn't really understand why it couldn't run modern apps and that included whatsapp for some users.

Nokia trying to compete with their legendary name as a weapon while giving standart hardware spec are pityfull when there are other brand that trying to compete SAMSUNG with high hardware spec with a low price product seems to work that out. So in my Opinion if Nokia can't do the same move at the market they should invest to develop Symbian to make it comparable with Android or iOS, because Symbian doesn't need a high hardware to run so it could maybe cost less to build the phone. the latest Nokia Symbian are Nokia X7 which run with 680 Mhz cpu and 256 mb ram. that's even lower than iOS hardware spec.
Quick question: I have a Sony Ercisson satio u1i that ran on Symbian OS, can I install a different OS like Asha or MeeGo or any other OS ....Thanks

iOS was built on Unix, not Linux
Nokia should've prioritized improving their SymbianOS, it had REAL Potential and it was Ahead of it's Time.
Nokia just need more Dev's and to expand the symbian environment in the world ... cause' at that time symbian was more snappy, optimised than android.
I just wished if they didn't gave up this early.....

One think I really didn't like with Nokia is how they reskinned their feature phones to look like symbian phones (cough *asha line*cough) and they were secretly running the Serious 40 OS instead. I know this because I bought one but I knew what they were doing and I didn't care but others were really confused and didn't really understand why it couldn't run modern apps and that included whatsapp for some users.
