  • A retro lookback @ Nokia's evolution from Symbian to MeeGo
    Find Nokia phones: amzn.to/2tcC846
    Find Symbian devices: goo.gl/7KwMJs
    Find Meego/Sailfish phones: goo.gl/Tn9oo5
    Details:
Symbian was a mobile operating system (OS) and computing platform designed for smartphones.Symbian was originally developed as a closed-source OS for PDAs in 1998 by Symbian Ltd.
As a pioneer that established the smartphone industry, it was the most popular smartphone OS on a worldwide average until the end of 2010 - at a time when smartphones were in limited use, when it was overtaken by Android, as Google and its partners achieved wide adoption.
Symbian OS was essentially a shell system and required an additional user interface (as middleware) to form a complete operating system. Symbian OS became prominent from the S60 (formerly Series 60) platform built by Nokia, first released in 2002 and powering most Nokia smartphones. Symbian OS eventually became the most widely used smart mobile operating system, though notably not as popular in North America.
Symbian^3 was released in 2010 as the successor to S60 5th Edition, by which time it became fully open source. Symbian^3 received the Anna and Belle updates in 2011. The Nokia 808 PureView in 2012 was officially the last Symbian smartphone from Nokia.
MeeGo is a discontinued Linux distribution hosted by the Linux Foundation, using source code from the operating systems Moblin (produced by Intel) and Maemo (produced by Nokia). Primarily targeted at mobile devices and information appliances in the consumer electronics market, MeeGo was designed to act as an operating system for hardware platforms such as netbooks, entry-level desktops, nettops, tablet computers, mobile computing and communications devices, in-vehicle infotainment devices, SmartTV / ConnectedTV, IPTV-boxes, smart phones, and other embedded systems

They had no free games and all was paid, like 4.99$. The games like Assasins Creed, Prince of Persia, India Jones, Pirates of Carribean and 100s of other games were all the same shit with differnt skinned enemies and slightly different levels. Worse than Fifa.
Today play store is full of protype looking android games but there is also This is War of Mine, Little Nightmares, Don't Starve and ports like Portal, Half life, GTA. Take off your Nostalgia glasses.

Late to the party here but a good look back. There are a few misrepresentations though. First, the initial phone you show is running Symbian 60 5th Edition which was basically a touch layer grafted on top of the non-touch Symbian 60 Series 3 OS. It was a stop-gap measure to hold people over until the touch-enabled OS was ready. The first phones running the true touch-enabled Symbian^3 OS were the N8 and E7. The actual lineage was Symbian Series 60v3 (non touch) -> Series 60 5th Edition -> Symbian^3 -> Symbian Anna -> Nokia Belle. In fact, Belle was a huge improvement and modernization over Anna which was a small incremental update of Symbian^3.Second, Meego is not related to Symbian in any way shape or form. Symbian's roots came from the Psion EPOC OS (which was more or less DOS-based). Meego is the successor to Maemo 5 (using in the Nokia N900) which is built on the Debian Linux platform. The only reason why the iconography was similar was they were being developed at the same time and Nokia was initially positioning Meego to replace Symbian but that idea was dropped when they moved to Windows Phone.Meego was WAY ahead of its time and would've faired very well if it had quality app support.

oh thanks now after 13 years I finally know why the symbian on the first phone he shows - it was just a touch layer! wow, I had it and nothing was working properly except calling and sms. While I agree the development of Symbian should have continued, the problem was that the Symbian base code was so old, there were serious problems with integration of new technologies into the OS. Anna and Belle is basically as advanced as it can go. That is why Nokia started developing Meego as a successor to Symbian, but ultimately went with Windows Phone, and we all know how that ended.
I wish we would not have the strict duopaly of Android/iOS we have today, but the app-centric needs of modern mobile phone usage dictates that this duopoly is what we gonna have.

Android And Ios Don'T Even Stand A Chance Against It. Imagine If Symbian Was Further Developed And It Has Snapdragon 865 With Only 1Gb Of Ram .It Will Be A Beast. The Best Part Is When The Ram Is Full,It Tells You But In Android Even When With A Lot Of Free Ram It Still Refresh Almost All Apps And Its Annoying.Symbian Can Keep 20 Apps Running In The Background For Days Without Refresh .Sometimes You Forget That You Have Some Apps For One Week Running In The Background Without Knowing,You Will Only Know When You Click It Then It Resume From The Extact The Same Spot You Left It Open a Week Ago. It Is The True Multitasking King Mobile Os Which Ever Existed.

I had an unbelievable indestructible Xpress music 5800 cp before it was late 20's when I had it, it got drop around 15ft it got dead pixel then it had been dropped in the water for like good 5 seconds, dropped from my pocket while in a running vehicle still functional then for the last time it got dropped again in water for the same amount of time, bro! The deadpixel got fixed! Like it vanished after that however the speaker got bad but 100% functional and for some reason I misplaced it...that old relic got lost

I always had a thought that the moving of Nokia from using Symbian to Android was a WRONG MOVE, it's a practically late to come down to the market of android phone because SAMSUNG has become the "Nokia" at that market. Nokia trying to compete with their legendary name as a weapon while giving standart hardware spec are pityfull when there are other brand that trying to compete SAMSUNG with high hardware spec with a low price product seems to work that out. So in my Opinion if Nokia can't do the same move at the market they should invest to develop Symbian to make it comparable with Android or iOS, because Symbian doesn't need a high hardware to run so it could maybe cost less to build the phone. the latest Nokia Symbian are Nokia X7 which run with 680 Mhz cpu and 256 mb ram. that's even lower than iOS hardware spec.

Nokia should have gone with Android earlier. They would have been been equal with samsung or even ahead in terms of market share. But their executives were too stubborn to let go of their own made OS

Nokia should have used more powerful hardware like android did. Symbian was really well optimized but simple things like browsing was just to much because the cpu/gpu on almost all the Symbian devices where to weak.

Nokia phones always had the best hardware, far better than any competitors be it cameras, GC/PUs, or simply raw functionality.
It was the dated Symbian User Interface and user experience that gave the impression of being slow. While the OS was an engineering marvel as far as efficiency (battery and system resource usage) it was let down because the Engineers didn't let the artists and designers into the room unlike Apple for instance, where artists, designers, and marketers take center stage.
When they eventually created Maemo/Meego - A whole new beautiful and elegantly efficient Linux-based platform with the N9, it was too late. Their mobile phone division was bleeding cash from the jugular cannibalizing the profits of other money-making divisions like Nokia Networks, Nokia Research (Nokia-Bell labs), Here Maps, Nokia Ventures (NGP Capital), etc.

primitive multitasking? S60 / SYMBIAN (aside from what blackberry used) was & STILL is the only OS that actually has REAL multitasking ! Android (except from dual-windows, which was available from Android N (7.0) upwards) & iOS employ App switching* !S60 could even multitask app processes, something these current "smart" 🙄 phone OSes Android & iOS for the most part, CANT do.... unfortunately.
