Pretty sure people who don’t like stereo chorus have never played a stereo chorus into two separate amps. I sold one of my amps and I barely use my chorus pedal anymore because using it through two amps ruined me. I can see how in a two guitar band you might not need a stereo chorus but if you’re the only guitarist a cheap stereo chorus pedal is an easy relatively cheap way to run a stereo rig , I even put my poly tune between my chorus and amp 2 and tuner on muted the second amp like a free A and A&B box lol . Edit I guess spicy because it’s digital , I don’t care if it’s digital or analog for chorus, I can see how people would prefer analog delay but honestly the digital pedals can do really convincing analog delays now too . It’s weird when I started playing digital was great and what everyone wanted, it was expensive so we wound up with older analog versions and our heroes of the 90s did the same thing. Alternative and grunge didn’t use what they used because it was “vintage” they used it because it was CHEAP. We all wanted a triax, or ADA , or a JMP-1 or a boogie studio preamp, some 200 watt power amp and digital rack processors when I started playing, what we got were a Bandit and a Ratt or Metal Zone, and if we saved begged and borrowed we might be able to get a digitech RP something or my poor man’s RP a Zoom. Seriously pedals and pedal boards were kinda out of style. I’m 42 been playing since I was 12 and have only gotten into pedals in the last few years, boy did I pick the wrong time.
You’re on a roll with the recent modulation pedals. First the CE-3 and now these two. I’m a Gilmour fan so of course I’ve tried several iterations of the original EM and DEM but have always wondered about the 2. In the end they all sound somewhat similar. A chorus with a delay time knob can be set to sound like a flanger. The old DOD and the Visual Sound liquid chorus v2 come to mind…which is criminally underrated. In the end I’ve stuck with the last big box DEM, Past FX Elastic Matresse and the Elady. Just can’t let go of the big box DEM yet.
Loved that opening jam! Had a little taste of “The Church” in there, very fun! And huge props for explains why these are time-based effects and not pitch-modulation effects. You _can_ make a chorus out of pitch modulation, but it’s traditionally time-based because that was cheaper than pitch modulation. As you described comb-filters in your original flanger video, we sometimes hear pitch changes as we process a time based effect. That video is so outstanding as the best explanation and description of what a comb filter is I’ve ever read or heard. ✌️😌🎸
Hey there, great video. I bought the black one (Stereo) 12 years ago and it is a great sounding flanger. In fact I have a Boss Fl-3 for sale I bought two months ago. Analog, shmanalog; I may try the green one some day but the black one just sounds too good to worry about it. I have no use for chorus generally, but as a flanger it's ingenious. No "resonance", "manual" or feedback controls, none needed. And it doesn't have the cheesy "oy yoy yoy" sound I can't dial out on other flangers.
Don't really care what anyone says, I love my Stereo Electric Mistress. It's my go-to pedal when I want to add a little to my clean sound and it beefs up my fuzz a little when I use them together.
I love my Stereo Mistress, it's the only modulation pedal I kept after moving to an all digital powerhouse, the Boss MD-500, which I also really love. I just didnt know the Stereo Mistress was digitaaaal! omg!!! how come? It is sooo cool!
I recently bought the Stereo. It's really cool, but I wish it had more control over the sweep. It sounds epic with a Big Muff style fuzz before it. I'll probably check out some other flangers like the Boss ones.
Glad it helped!! It’s a jellyfish lava lamp. There’s quite a few different models available. Unfortunately, I found it was causing an audible hum on my tracks with that amp, so it’s probably not going to be in any newer videos :(
1) As a studio musician that plays both guitar and keys, stereo is the way to go. It's easy to sum to mono after, but stereo is a must-have for studio work. 2) and now we have the Andy Summers Walking on the Moon version of the same pedal. (which is identical internally)3) I see your Kingston NY t-shirt. Are you actually living there? I lived there from 2018-2020! (Now in CT)
Both are cool, thanks for sharing. You probably already know this but the vintage EM circuits have been cloned by a few folks, you can get a PastFX Elastic Matress or a Retro-Sonic Flanger, those are both supposed to be pretty cool for doing the vintage EM stuff. Regardless, I love a good flanger (big BF-2 and MXR fan, personally) so flanger vids are always welcome.
One of my favorite things about having this channel is learning about all the songs and artists that my little clips sound like, who I usually haven’t heard of before, but end up really enjoying. I’m gonna listen to them on a drive later tonight!
Boss would call the Tube Zipper TBZPR-1 of course . Or if it came out in the 80s the Super Tube Turbo Space Hyper Zipper Dimension 😂 That’s what’s so awesome about pedals some of them I want for the crazy names and paint job and graphics and if they sound cool that’s awesome too. I saw the Old Blood Noise Reflector pedal and it’s got a space skeleton on it right so cool and come to find out it sounds cool and does some pretty neat stuff.
If you can get your hands on them, it would be great to listen to your shootout between the vintage green box Electric Mistress, the silver box Deluxe Electric Mistress, and the new XO DEM. Many people online claim that the new mistress is garbage and not worth the money because even the Mooer ElecLady is closer to the vintage sound.
I think these are kinda underrated, somehow i never even considered them while spending a fortune on a flanger collection. The vintage Mistresses with the green letters certainly nice for a collection but also way too expensive, i grabbed a "cheap" big box Deluxe Mistress V5 from the late 90s a few years ago and it also looks nice on the shelf. On my board i use either the Past Fx Elastic Mattress or the Maxon FL-9.
I keep hearing great things about the Elastic Mattress, and I've never met a Maxon that didn't impress. Good choices, and I'm all atwitter about the idea of a Flanger Collection. I'm curious about how they stack up against the literally bigger box versions.
Intro rhythms reminds me of “If I Could Fly” by the Satch. Great video. Now we gotta compare the old dem to the original green em to the new clones lol. The elady has a spot too.
I think the green De luxe is more like a good analog chorus. She's not much like the electric mistress of Gilmour or Summers. Better to choose a Mooer E-lady, very very close to the vintage Mistress. The stereo electric mistress, on the other hand, in my opinion has a too cold sound, typical of digital pedals. I think the best choice is Mooer E-lady.
@@StompboxBreakdown my go-to local shop has one in the display case… and I get paid this week. 🤔 I’ve never sat down with it. I think if I was to only have “one” I would want something with some stretch like that. Definitely going to scope it. Great tip. Love to videos as always bro
I like the deluxe the range of speed sucks on the stereo and the two depth modes are kinda dumb either way I don't own either cause Facebook marketplace isn't exactly a safe place to buy stuff
People have their spicy opinions on the Stereo but I'd bet in a blind test, they'd say it sounds cool.

Ya did a great job with this here, also mad bonus points for the using of multiple Reverend Guitars!! 🙌🏾🙌🏾
So much mistress, so much mystery. Thanks for digging in!
My pleasure!

Hey @macsarcule, I'm working on a video where I want to give you a shout out. Can you help me out with how to pronounce your username?
I've got the stereo, you can get so many blends/variations out of it. Very cool.
10 Years? Gone... Appreciate your approach to, and sound differences of, these pedals - no rockstar vibe(brophone). Cheers
Excellent guitar playing,man.Sweet sounds.
Thank you so much!
Love me some flanger. The deluxe would be my pick 🎵
I love both! Amazing video as always!
Thank you so much!! Me too

I have the Retro-sonic and attest it is very fun and cool 🙂
Excellent video again. You really are a funny guy!!
The Deluxe My actual interest is the Neo Mistress & MXR Micro Flanger👻🎸🚀
Nice video. Thanks and greetings..👏👏👏👏👍👍
@4:14 I thought you were going to play the song Berlin by Marillion 🤔

of course .

You said the original mono Electric Mistress came out in '75 or '76. When did the stereo version come out?
Looks like maybe 2007

Big agree on the Tube Zipper. And thanks for your kind words on the channel!!

Is the XO Deluxe digital too?
It’s analog, though it uses smt components.
Ehx just add an Andy Summers Electric Mistress signature pedal !
Oddly enough - I have never owned a flanger. Any other odd utility or mangling effect, yes - but still don’t own a dedicated flanger 😢
I think my all time favorite flanger is still the MXR EVH one. It works really well with heavy guitar AND has an “unchained” button

ehx discontinued the analog one... probably less margin for them.
I thought they just relabeled it to the “Walking On The Moon” flanger?
@@StompboxBreakdownThought so as well, and it is even €20 cheaper (€129). Great pedals, Deluxe, Stereo, Moon can't go wrong.
