    "Usually, it's not that one side plays well and one side plays badly and the side that plays well wins. Usually, you both play badly... and then one of you decides to make the worst move in all time and minus 100." I couldn't sum up my chess life better than this.

    18:25 Your pronunciation of "Scheveningen" is almost perfect! I have never heard a foreigner say it so well. You just put "a little" too much stress on the "ch" part :-)

    Some say the world will end in fire,
    Some say in ice.
    From what I’ve tasted of desire
    I hold with those who favor fire.
    But if it had to perish twice,
    I think I know enough of hate
    To say that for destruction ice
    Is also great
    And would suffice.

    Ben, there’s a third move in Bronstein Korchnoi 1962 you didn’t have time to mention: the move for black Kf7, which puts white into one move checks in order to save his rook.
    39 Rxh6+ Kf7 40 Qb7+ Kg8 41 Qa8 Kf7 results in a draw.
    This might be a nice example of why you don’t allow students to resign.
    Also, stockfish recommends moves that hang the queen. 39 Rxh6+ Kf7 40 Qc8+ Kg8 41 Qc8+ Qf8! 42 Rh8+ Kxh8. Don’t do that!
    Is this correct?

    What game by Bronstein is Ben referring to? Because when I look for his "dream game" I only find a Nimzo game, not a King's gambit.

    alright I didnt see Ra8 in the end but I think Bxd5 instead is also winning because after Kxf8 you can play Bb7 and after Ra7 you can play a6 and if that's not winning, I must be crazy

    At 13:45, what about Rh7 instead of d5

    • @waschkarte3989
      @waschkarte3989 5 лет назад

      I would guess Qf5, followed by checks on the white squares until forever - the bishop and the c4-pawn connect very well with the queen there. 0-0-0 there (like after the immediate Qf5 instead of Qg4 drawing in the line before taking on b6) fails to Qxh7, and if you take on g7 then Qe4, Qd3, Qf3, Qg2 etc - if you go towards the queenside it might even be mate after Qe3 Qd2 something and the bishop entering.

    @14:00 why not Rh7 ...?? Bcoz if [1)...Bxd5 2)Rxg7,Bxg8 3)RxQ+,KxR where white has a rook for 2 minor pieces + 4 connected passed pawns. As opposed to the variation 1)d5 shown by GM Finegold which ends up with R for 2 M Pieces + 3 connected passed pawns... So, is my variation a tiny bit better.... What say??? Anyone???

    • @RayVitoles
      @RayVitoles 8 лет назад

      +Kedar Sahasrabudhe maybe Qd5 followed by Qe4+?

    • @greatsquare7046
      @greatsquare7046 8 лет назад

      +RayVitoles No.... Qd5 is a blunder due to 1)Qxd5,Bxd5 2)Rxg7... White has an extra rook and 4 connected pp... evaluation is around 9.2 for white..... Therefore, I surmised you meant Qf5! instead of Qd5?? Now after Qf5 [If 1)Rxg7?,Qe4+ 2)Kd1,Qxd4+ 3)Ke1,Qe3+] and Black steals a perpetual!!!... So, I overlooked the refutation Qf5 and hence d5 is better than Rh7.

    • @jorik0907
      @jorik0907 8 лет назад

      Rh7 is risky because of Qf5 which threatens your rook and perpetual ;)

    The great Jack Benny once chastised Rich Little for copying his fingers to the chin move using 4 fingers. Jack told Rich, "You've got it all wrong! It's 3 fingers, not 4."
    Rich said in his best Benny voice (complete with hand move), "But why?!"
    Benny answered, "Because 3 is FUNNIER!"
    So, the answer to the Bronstein story is, "Because Ben is FUNNIER!"

    Is there really a rating requirement to get into the advanced class and if so what is it? Is it because these lectures are heavily oversubscribed. Man, the young chess players in St Louis are really lucky!!

    • @STLChessClub

    • @adamcunningham8248

      Danny Dingo He is just teasing. Everyone is bad at chess. Did you know this? He talks about his own terrible moves almost as much as he teases these 1800 kids, who are way better than me, and still terrible. For more information on the validity of ratings please visit the Fide website and take a look at the algorithms used in the Elo Rating System.

      Adam Cunningham i'm sure everyone understands he's kidding, however, I personally agree he does it too often and it sounds rude and almost malicious even if it isn't intended to be so

    • @ralphschraven339
      @ralphschraven339 8 лет назад +5

      +oskill The fact that his entire style of lecturing revolves around mocking other people or himself kind of gives away the fact that if he's saying you're bad he's probably not being very serious about it :P
      Of course, that still doesn't mean everyone understands he's joking. But then again, that's just life. Sometimes people misinterpret what other people are saying. Luckily that's not that harmful in this case.

    there's hardly any thought process explained in anything..
    i don't call this teaching.. i call this a this-is-what-you-do instructional video to a very specific game
