No worries mate. I have about 100 sneakers and about 30 pairs of boots and growing. You’re fine. My issue is space and creating situations where I can wear my boots and reasons why I have to change them in the middle of the day. Before they rot of non use.
It's over for me. I'm in too deep. Lusting on various exclusive leather styles as well as pre-planning my next heel and sole heights and combinations. Thank goodness for the "heritage newsletter by Boot Spy." This take was so awesome 😅
The patina jokes absolutely killed me. I love this video, some folks in this community definitely need to take a step back on their seriousness and laugh at themselves a bit, lol.
Welllll I have 6 but three pairs are cement construction that I got before I really got into boots. The other three are Thursdays, but I have an ever growing list of Thursdays and Grant Stones I want to buy 😬. And probably some Parkhurst, Allen Edmonds, Dievier...... I'm doomed
Agree with your basic premise of having boots that fit specific use categories. Then you have to consider at least one backup in each category so you don't get bored or stuck in a rut with the same look . That takes you to 10- 12 pairs which sounds about right as a minimum to be a borderline boot degenerate. In my case , my 5 categories are gardening/yardwork, hiking , casual day to day , taking my wife to dinner, and specialty leathers. For yardwork, I use Thursday Diplomat or Iron Ranger. For hiking, Russell Birdshooter or Rancourt Bison Harrison. For casual, Grant Stone Diesel and Parkhurst Niagara. For dinner dates, Viberg 2030's and Alden Indy. For specialty, Viberg Veldt and Mark Albert kudu. Oh, I forgot one more category- since I live in the Northeast, where we can get snow and ice for a couple months. I have a Thursday captain with the special snow sole so I don't mess up the other boots. I'm done- don't need any more boots ! If a new one comes in, and old one has to go ! ( unless I can come up with a new category that makes perfect sense ) .
I'd add a cold weather and a hot weather one. And a hiking boot. Also a motorcycle boot. Obviously a vented summer boot, and some waterproofs. Oh crap.
But how are you supposed to show off on Instagram with only 5 pairs??? Ironically, the people talking about patina nonstop are the ones with 100 pairs of boots with zero patina, because they can only wear each pair 3 time per year. They are secretly envious of all the guys at work with amazing patina who have 1 pair of work boots that they wear everyday including to church. The higher the number, the lesser the value.
4 pairs of Grant Stone, 4 pairs of Truman (with a 5th coming), 2 pairs of Oak St, 2 pairs of Woverine boots, 8 pairs of Allen Edmonds boots, 2 pairs of Timberland.... This does not include my shoes 😞. I finally slowed down now having a 1 month old kid, but certified degenerate here 😭😂
Don't forget ice/snow boots for those of us in cold climates, and it's also nice to have a waterproof pair of boots for that heavy Pacific Northwest rain.
I've got the brown and olive green. I'm thinking black will be the last pair I get. I rarely go to formal functions and very seldom wear monochrome clothing.
Thanks to you, Trenton and Heath and Nick from Stridwise I am a boot degenerate. I have 5 pair for work. 2 Whites Perry Mocs. Old pair of Red Wings that should be thrown away. 2 pairs of Danner Bull Run Moc Toes. and Just ordered a new pair of Thorogood winter work boots. 4 pairs of Chukka's. 2 pair of Thursdays. and they have a new boot out this week that I will have to have. 2 pairs of Helm's as well. I also am waiting on a pair of Nicks Americana boots that I will not see till January of 2024..And, thanks to Rose Anvil Weston, I also have a Perry select in Burgandy Double Shot that I wear just on the weekends...I also have way too many All-Clad and Made In pans that I could start a restaurant with....And, don't get me going on how many grills I own....Keep up the good work, us BD's need a channel for our daily and weekly fix...
My plan…3 1. For work, dressier. Diesel, President, etc…every day wear at the office, can be dressed up decently to an informal “fun” suit outfit 2. For work, more rugged. Blacksmith, Truman 79, Wanes, etc…also every day wear at the office (for me anyway), but works when it’s time to climb a ladder or haul equipment around 3. “Snow boot”. Not necessarily insulated (that’s what socks are for), but 8+ inch, preferably side-zip for quick on/off, rugged enough for shoveling in winter #1 is on the way. I hope not to degenerate too much beyond this plan…
postal worker in wales uk....i rock wolverine moc toe most days....plus red wing iron ranger 8086 charcoal....also have clarks bushacre 3 in beeswax...clarks clarksdale bud.....thursday captain terracotta......irish setter elk trackers....hush puppy chelsea boot...plus 2 old pairs of cat boots
Two sets of thorogoods, an Ariat , two twisted x, and the Danner super rainforest. That’s pretty much my work rotation, with the one set of thorogoods doing double duty for casual. Looking at a set of Iron Rangers for casual next!
I'm more of a watch collecting degenerate with boot problems as in I only wear boots problem, the problem is I rarely find sneakers that fits, even less that feel comfortable (size 14) while boots are a dime a donzen in adviability, also the srugle of short pants sindrome is real (1.95m tall). My plan is buying based on style.
Hiking boots - I generally use GoRucks, but I just got some Jim Green African Rangers which might end up out in the swamps. I'm a degenerate, evidently, so....
I own a footwear collection of sixty pairs. This includes athletic shoes, work shoes, and, of course, boots. Most of my boots are hiking boots. I also have tall winter boots, tactical boots, and two heritage boots, the Wolverine 1000 Mile in brown olive tanned Horween leather, and the Red Wing Blacksmith in Copper Rough and Tough leather. Yes, a total degenerate !
Look, all I need is one boot in each style, one by each major designer, one in each kind of leather... is that too much to ask? (Okay, it's too much for my closet, but is that really the benchmark we should be using to determine the RIGHT number of boots?) Five is impossible: what about hiking boots? Winter boots? Combat boots for going to concerts?
Do you only roll up jeans with boots? I don't think you would with chinos or dressier slacks. And if you roll them up, how much longer of an inseam do you go up? Most of my jeans have my standard inseam length. TY
I had a feeling that I was starting down a dark path a few years ago…. But I didn’t know I had a problem until it was too late… my wife left me.. my kids left me… my dogs left me…. Even my goat left me😢…. I’m just kidding! I don’t have a goat😂
Could you do a review of the Urban Wolf Club boots? As far as I can tell it’s this guy in Mexico, making boots similar to the Thursday Captain, but about $50 cheaper. Idk whether they’re the same quality though
The surest way to know is if you need to use a spreadsheet to keep track of the boots you own. And that you need to get rid of a lot of boots to get down to the same number of boots as "Bootspy". The category of boot you missed are hiking boots. And if you're serious about hiking you'll have several different hiking boots from flexible, lightweight boots for easy hikes all the way up to rigid, crampon compatible boots winter boots for snow and ice.
I watch this very often to remind myself to thin out the herd when I want new boots. The fact that I have definitely used the word "patina" on a date before makes me feel attacked. I might be a boot collecting degenerate.
I don’t report to an office so I wear mostly casuals and I wear them all. Living in 4 season state eases to guilt of owning too many pairs. 9 and counting. 😂
The daily one has to be two, because it is not good to wear the same boot everyday due to sweat or water from the wild and it is good to alternate and fight the smell if you have smelly feet. I also like to mention that IMHO spring and summer are not for boots hence me having shoes or sneakers too. 😉
I'm headed towards the rock bottom. I need to get it he White's mp boot. I'm compelled to do so. I hope I don't regret it. Help. This is the last pair, I promise.
i like that - i'd probably go green before blue. But then I'd also do blue. And maybe get a few different kinds of green. And it'd be interesting to do a navy and also a light blue. And I'd love to see a natural undyed leather boot in there too. And you gotta have a rich burgundy boot. And a charcoal boot, a black boot, and a teacore black boot is always good to have. oh...no... it's happening again!
Umm... Counting bought, sold, and given away I probably am not that far off from the main man himself. I think I own 30+ at the moment. To be fair I don't really want to know the number. I've changed my habits a bit. Currently graduated to buying my own top grade hides, with specific weights, finishing, etc. I've supplied last ideas and style ideas to a few makers. I'm guilty of a few things in my own backyard and a few remote. I've had personal conversations with a number of business owners and makers. A few of which reside in my contacts with personal phone numbers. I've had my feet professionally measured, traced, up to 17" high. I've switched from off the shelf boots and I am now building bespoke boots that are fit to my own unique measurements on altered lasts and custom cut uppers. Am I a boot degenerate or have I ascended to a level beyond a boot degenerate? That's truly the question. If I am beyond the boot degenerate level what do you call me?
I have 25 pairs at least, a handful dating back to high school making them older than 95% of your audience. In HS, I think there was a town about 30 miles south that was down to about 6 people and was called Patina. Patina Colorado, population 6, 85 miles east of Denver.
Is it a thing that I worry that I don’t wear one boot enough….so I end up wearing them when it’s totally uncalled for….like in my shorts around the house? I’m not thaaaat bad
While I am not a boot degenerate with only five pairs of boots on hand (two Nicks, one Grant Stone, one Oak Street, and one Red Wing), I do have one more pair coming before the end of the year: another Grant Stone in Crimson CXL. I won't go beyond this point as six pairs are more than enough. Nope. Well, to be honest, those Viberg 2030 service boots in calf leather are calling to me...
If I were to do my current top 5 it would be. Oak rambler Parkhurst for the thunderdome, and my backup/dress version is a John lofgren brown chromexel cap toe service boot(trying to patinate these ones like an iron ranger just more expensive) and my back up work boot is the drifter from Rose anvil/whites. My black boot is a wolverine 1000 mile in chromexel that I'm wearing towards a full repair to get doc Martin vibes with a leather insole. The last one is for dressing up and it's the viberg/himmel collaboration chocolate horse rump but it's soon to be a 12 inch renegade in Slade double stuffed to show were into the darkside now
im not really much of an artist or a writer but i do enjoy the creativity and simple pleasure of putting together an outfit. i probably average five or six wardrobe changes a day at least partly based on the different tasks i undertake.
Definitely a boot degenerate but only have five pairs definitely recommend and agree with William on your fifth pair being something fun. I got a pair of OSB trench oxfords in green roughout chamois for that pair, a pair of Danner light that serve as my hikers and work sometimes, a pair of White’s perry in black that serve as work and second daily, Taylor Stitch service boot in brown and Taylor Stitch Chelsea boot in a dark brown suede as my dress boot. I’m looking at trading out one of the TS for another OSB soon because they fit my feet better and I like the idea of owning more USA made.
I don't tend to memorize tannery leather names, nor do I say this P word except when prodded by some vid subject matter. There are, also, different boots for different tasks, of which may still retain said boots from previous time even if not technically all "work" boots or something.... ?
I already registered some complaint about "dress" boots before, but I would argue that more men START with work boots than other casual styles and then decide they want something less cruddy looking for going out on weekends or whatever? Maybe they have been superseded by guys who have less labor-intensive day jobs and more disposable income now?
I HAVE Balmoral boots but haven't worn them, so mostly needed work and casual boots more, but then he didn't mention combat or hiking or cowboy... [yet?]
Now tell me why on earth,a guy who loves heritage style boots and has to compromise to a limited number, should chose as a go to boot, a made in china one, especially a 500 bucks one 🤦♂️
yeah I know...I went to sell all my boots, sold 2 pairs and then stopped selling them because I made excuses for why I need all of them lol... so awesome
its me. im the problem. I have... 14 pairs and 1 pair of nicks being made...

I don't tend to memorize tannery leather names, nor do I say this P word except when prodded by some vid subject matter. There are, also, different boots for different tasks, of which may still retain said boots from previous time even if not technically all "work" boots or something.... ?
Clearly I am not a degenerate and didn't think I was in the first place.
Still not much denim for me. That "heritage" issue just came up the other day, too, which I mostly don't fit that category, either.
[yet?]
Again, most working guys don't alternate their WORK boots like they should, either.
Now tell me why on earth,a guy who loves heritage style boots and has to compromise to a limited number, should chose as a go to boot, a made in china one, especially a 500 bucks one 🤦♂️
@@MyActualThoughts made in China for an America heritage boot. Shameful
First…love your vids
Sell my boots? That's blasphemy !
yeah I know...I went to sell all my boots, sold 2 pairs and then stopped selling them because I made excuses for why I need all of them lol... so awesome
