✨Free Pattern - Artic Ice Beanie - forthefrills.com/one-hour-chunky-crochet-beanie-free-pattern-video-tutorial/ Check out the free crochet beanie pattern! It has all the sizing info (sizes child to adult), measurements, yarn amounts and alteration instructions ☺
I made this beanie and I love it! My favorite beanie prototype that I've made off of a RUclips tutorial so far. It's the closest looking one to store-bought. Very nice quality. Some comments that might be helpful to others... I used one of the smaller skeins of wool ease "super bulky" by Lion Brand (106 yard) and this was enough for a women's beanie (23 stitch) but justttt barely. I made 24 rows and realized it was TOO big, like alien head/ helmet looking, so I pulled it down to 22 rows and that fixed it. Anyway, because of the rows I removed, I had enough yarn to do the pom-pom in the same color!!! I otherwise would have had to use a different color yarn... it was cutting it that close on materials. So if you're worried about the pom-pom matching, I'd vote to get the bigger skein or buy 2 of the smaller skeins. For children's size, a 106 yard skein will definitely be enough. For Men's size, I don't think you'll have enough to even complete the beanie, much less the pom-pom, with 106 yards... probably you'll need more like 150-200 yards if I had to guess. I used a 11.5mm hook because it was all I had & I figured it was close enough. The height of the "23 chain" plus the first few rows (to account for the bend in yarn) was almost exactly 12 inches. So if you're using a different hook, 12 inches was a good height for the women's pattern. Then you can just build horizontal until you get the circumference of your head. I also love this hat because it can be worn convertible (folded brim, not folded brim). When you unfold it, it makes a lovelllyyyyyy slouchy beanie!! I truly love this outcome and this is something I will be excited to wear and gift to people. I hope these notes I gave are helpful, but I also recommend checking out the pattern in the notes of the video, because that was very helpful too!! Good luck to everyone 💓
Finally found this great project. It worked just like you said. I am new to making hats, this made me very happy! I am donating to a local shelter, and the hat is so pretty! Thank you very much!!!!!!
I just made this- my first project EVER and I'm SO HAPPY!!! I learnt the basic stitches off another video before starting this, so once I was confident with HDC I tried this out and it was a success!!! I had to do 2 turning chains for each row though, instead of one, because otherwise it kept shrinking. Didn't have a darning needle, so I joined the ends of the rectangle with slip stitch and sewed the top with some embroidery thread and a sewing needle. It ended up a little short (i would prefer if it came further down my forehead) but that's just because I didn't realise I should chain two when I started. Thanks for such an easy and fun video!!! Also I went by width not how many rows, since I used 12ply not 16ply yarn. (I still used a 12mm hook)
Fantastic tutorial! Really clear instructions and easy to follow. I appreciate that you defined crocheting in to the back loop as other videos I've watched don't specify which method they are doing. You also didn't drag out the video as others do. Perfect how to
Thank you! I'm so glad you found the instructions helpful! I never know how much to explain ... sometimes I get comments that I shouldn't demonstrate the stitches but I think more information is always better than less :)
I just found this pattern on Monday and I'm on my second hat already. I was so happy with the first one I decided to make a few as gifts for Christmas. And, even though I still have to decorate, bake, wrap gifts and write cards (not necessarily in that order), I'm sure I can make at least two more. I'm using the Lion's Brand Hometown yarn in Fayettville Frost (mint green), Aspen Tweed (beige) and Tampa Spice (red). After the first one, I decided to make the 2nd with an alternate color for the brim and pom-pom. So I reduced the overall length to 9" and will add a 3" brim by doing a row of DC in the Front Loops only, then alternating between FPDC and BPDC for about 3 rows. Alternating FP- BPDC also creates a nice stretchy edge so, while the pattern won't align perfectly, it should look nice. Working in FLO will force the brim to stay turned. I hope it works out. I'll add an update in the reply.
I love your tutorial, so easy to follow! I’m crocheting my fourth one now, same yarn but all different color selections. All my kids and grandchildren want one. Thanks so much!
Hi Sheryl, I'm so glad you find this tutorial easy to follow. That's so lovely! Your kids and grandchildren are very lucky to have you crocheting for them :)
Thank you for sharing this. Your instructions were so clear and my hat came out great and I was able to make it in one sitting. This is helpful for me to make and bring them to shelters.
How did you by chance make the pom pom hat topper for this particular hat project? Looks amazing, and would appreciate to learn how to make it if you have a link on a tutorial video. Curious if it's any different than a regular pom pom or is it just the type of yarn that makes look so good? Thank you.
I love your video but it took me almost 1 1/2 - 2 hours to do it but I still love it thanks, n I constantly work on it. But like I say great job, n I had to add more chain for it to fit me instead of 23 chain , I did 34 chain
I am excited to start this but didn't realize I would need 2 skeins until I got home. Maybe you should mention this in the video. Looks like a fun project.
Hi Karen, all the yarn amounts are in the blog post - linked in the description! Since patterns have multiple sizes I always recommend checking out the written pattern for more info! Grace
Hi, I'm normally a knitter, but wanted to try this crochet hat. Your instructions are clear and straight forward, thank you! My question though is that on my Lion Brand Super Bulky 6 yarn, the crochet hook size they recommend is a 9 mm (N-13). There seems to be a big difference between a 12 mm and a 9 mm. I was wondering why you recommend a hook size so much larger than what Lion Brand recommends. Thanks!
Hi Alaine, this is a great project if you're trying out crochet :) Yes the recommended hook size is a 9mm but I found that with a 9mm hook the stitches were quite stiff and tight so the beanie didn't sit very nicely on the head. Since Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick is so bulky we can size up the hook a lot (to 12mm) and still create dense stitches with more movement and flexibility to them. In general crochet stitches tend to have less drape to them than knit stitches so sizing up the hook size is one way to get better flexibility. I hope this helps, Grace :)
Hi, if you're using super chunky yarn I'd highly recommend using a 12mm hook or your beanie might be too small. However, if you check out the blog post as long as your final rectangle is the szme size as the measurements it should still fit but you'll probably need to add more chains in the foundation chain and add more rows if you're using a smaller hook.
Hi, you should be able to! You can work the foundation chain to be the circumference of your hat hat and then work rows to create the height (although this method will give you quite an obvious seam). Alternatively, you could make the hat top down and in the round for a more seamless look!
Hi Cindy, I use Clover Crochet Hooks (in my opinion, the comfiest to use and quickest to crochet with :) ) You can find links for all materials in the blog post - link in description :)
wow this is so simple and i’m making a scarf right now that is literally crocheted the same way so i’m going to make a hat to match. question... did buy a pompom or did you make one using the yarn? if you made it, do you have a tutorial on how? thank you!!
Yay, a matching set sounds lovely! I made the pom pom with the yarn using a pom pom maker. I don't have a tutorial on how to make it but I'll add that to my list. In the mean time if you youtube pom pom maker tutorial you should be able to find a video :)
Hi! Love this tutorial! One question, is the yarn & hook size in U.S. or U.K? If it’s U.K., would you mind telling me what those would be in U.S? Appreciate your help and your videos!! Always so clear and very detailed! ♥️🧶
Hi Deondre, Thank you so much! The yarn is super bulky(6) - US terms or super chunky (UK terms). The hook is a 12mm crochet hook which is a U.K. term but there isn't an equivalent hook size in US terms. However, I know they sell these crochet hooks at Michaels/Joann in the US - that's where I found the one I used :)
Hi Ida, you could but just make sure your rectangle is the same size as stated in the written pattern (so your stitch count and row number will probably change). This is already a super chunky hat so any thicker might be too thick! Grace
Hi Jake, all of the extra info and pattern is available in the blog post :) forthefrills.com/one-hour-chunky-crochet-beanie-free-pattern-video-tutorial
Hi Kim, depending on your gauge the 8mm hook would change the size of the beanie. I'd recommend creating a rectangle with the same dimensions - you'll probably have to add a few chains to the foundation chain and a few extra rows to have the right size beanie. Grace :)

Thank you! Its the best when you have the yarn already in your stash! :)
I was just going to say that! Isn’t it great when you have the perfect yarn waiting for a project!
Love the video and love your accent! Australian is my favorite :D

No worries, we all crochet in our own time :) Maybe your gauge was a bit tight? Either way I'm glad you like your hat!
Great tutorial! Thank you😊
Thank you my come out so nice
If my yarn recommends another crochet hook should I use that or should I still use a 12 mm
Hi! I was wondering: why do you do a hdc into the whole stitch at the end of each row? Is it so that the finishing is nicer looking? Thank you!
Grace
Found this easy to follow just one thing how big is the ball of wool
Excellent tutorial, thank you
Can you do this with a smaller yarn and hook, say a bulky 5 with an 8 mm hook, without the hat ending up being smaller than meant?
Nope. Then you must increase number of chains
So cute 😍 💓 💗 💕
So cute 😍
This was so easy to follow!! Thank you 😄😄
Hi, may I ask how many yards of yarn did you use for an adult beanie?
Great hat🧶🧶🧶😊
Hi, I'm normally a knitter, but wanted to try this crochet hat. Your instructions are clear and straight forward, thank you! I love your work! Keep it up
Can i use 16 ply yarn for this?
If using a 10mm hook, how many chains and rows?
I’m using the same 😭 I’d say probably a few less not too many tho
What type of yarn is this
Thanks for sharing, will be crocheting one of these. Can I use a smaller hook as I don't have a 12mm crochet hook?
Hi, if you're using super chunky yarn I'd highly recommend using a 12mm hook or your beanie might be too small. @@forthefrills Aww thanks for explaining it in more detail. Are you going to be doing a matching infinity scarf to go with this beauty
can i make this with a different yarn?
Thank you for this great tutorial. Do you know if this same type of hat can be made with horizontal ribbing instead of the usual vertical?
Hi, you should be able to! You can work the foundation chain to be the circumference of your hat hat and then work rows to create the height (although this method will give you quite an obvious seam). Alternatively, you could make the hat top down and in the round for a more seamless look!
