when i was closet trans i was just putting on whatever and got compliments from strangers for the paint drops on my pants. they were not intended at all. i just didnt care they got stained

@@genredambiance5912 The real one anti-fashion for me is "amoral" clothes. I have lots of ideas how to make them, like making prints with your blood, shooting you clothes from gun, homeprinting with graffity spray and other things. Its not about just customing your clothes, its a way to put a half of your soul into them. You are like turning clothes into your second skin. Its actually cool to wear preppy clothes but this way is not for me.
The way I was taught that anti-fashion is in school is when a style doesn’t follow current trends and stays consistent through out the years to that aesthetic. So for example, London’s punk aesthetic has stayed pretty consistent throughout the decades. Yohji Yamamoto would definitely fit into this definition of anti-fashion since his clothes have pretty much stayed the same since the 80s.

Nothing irked me more then the thought that designers are looking at what ordinary people are wearing which is typically cheaper and to then reciprocate that style, mark up the price so ordinary people can’t even think about buying the items, then shame the working class for not owning the items when they where the ones creating the styles regardless
We’ll get that thought out of your head. It’s the other way around. Colors, shapes, materials, and so on have cycled from the top, then filtered down to department stores, and then into the hands of cheap/fast fashion.
Interesting point. In the UK people are spending hundreds of pounds on clothes that when I was at school, they would have called someone a 'chav' for wearing. (athletic wear/sweatshirts, sweatpants, caps, trainers, ect) Chav was originally an acronym for council house antisocial vandals and a slur for working class people. Now this style is called "rave" or "vintage."

@door knob I get what your trying to say but it's quite the opposite. Right now Desginers create styles and fast fashion makes cheaper versions of it, that become widely available. Not the other way around. Towards the end of the video he mentions that wsgn looks at what desginers do and sell that ianfo to fast fashion brands.

It seems then that these days the way to be 'anti' is to be a caricature of the ugly norm, which I think you can see in music too with hyperpop for example. Theres almost a paradox in this, the escape from trends by hyperfocusing on trends.

@@r.y.m7052 A lot of hyperpop has its roots in PC music, and I think this music isn’t “anti” in the way it rejects the notion of popular music, or that it defines itself by being a reaction existing purely as opposition, but it still exists AS a reaction that throws away the “rules” by playing with what those rules mean and as louis pointed out- hyperfocusing on them. Idk if that is “anti” per se, but still works in a direction that is hard to cooperate into the trend forecasting.

I feel like fashion nowadays focuses so much into trying to be ridiculously ugly and "different" that it all ends up feeling the same. I think the best balance is trying to look pleasing while still not being safe, and that dude def nails that middle ground

So my feelings towards Anti fashion Is as follows: anti-fashion has always usually existed as a form of political rebellion like the punk movement of the 70s and the grunge movement of the 90s D’s then became fashion because they were taken and refined same as how black culture could be considered a form of anti-fashion because it what is the reflection of a group of marginalized people but it now has become fashion because music has exploded and now black culture is trendy. So the idea of anti-fashion has change the shape because it always starts out as something that would be considered ugly but then his adopted and becomes part of trend so if we look at Demna’s work he sort of takes from the niche of what will be considered tacky American tourist fashion not in the same way the Jacqmeuse does but in a raw almost trailer-trash-ish culture, or gamer culture, subgroups that would be considered of poor taste. So I believe he’s still adding to the machine because anti-fashion always becomes fashion.
100%. One of the best takes I’ve read here so far. That last comment especially resonates with me. If we look at the “anti-fashion” designers/houses of the 80s-90s, they are still creating clothing and furthering their design language today-and much of their design language has arguably remained true to their original identity. But like you said, they are all part of the machine now. With success + brand establishment comes cost, with cost comes cheaper ways of reaching consumers (ie CDG Play. ie TRENDS). Furthermore, the longer their brand identity stays in circulation, the more the silhouettes are “borrowed,” copied, and reproduced. With Demna now deriving inspiration from the average consumer-the one that does not give a flying fuck about high fashion (a group, as Bliss stated, is completely ignored by the high fashion conglomerates) he is thus doing what you mentioned early on in your comment. This makes me question whether or not anti-fashion within capitalism has no choice but to pivot every few years or so. I feel that WGSN will eventually catch on to Demna and we will see nothing but reproductions of his work and his design language. And once high fashion as pivoted enough, “anti-fashion” will have no choice but to eventually repeat its different iterations of itself, thus eventually becoming completely dead.
Couldn't agree more. I think trickle down theory nowadays is working based on the antifashion. People want to be different and the easiest way is antifashion. Then it becomes fashion and people follow new antifashion to be "different".

iris van herpen is the most creative living individual in fashion, and she’s kinda anti-fashion, in the sense that what she has done it was truly unseen, like it was for margiela, alexander mcqueen and a bunch of others, I mean she has revolutionized the techniques to create a garment.

I think the existence of anti fashion has been heavily depleted by the existence of social media. Apps like TikTok elevate just how fast trends can appear and then suddenly disappear. I eventually ended up deleting tiktok just bc I was getting tired of trends being shoved down my throat constantly

I think we are coming to a point where looking at fast fashion critically is unavoidable, so being anti-fashion, for me, is spending more on a piece, looking for smaller brands… basically engaging in fashion with a 5 year plan in mind as my grandma did.

it’s so fascinating about anti fashion as a term because I think when people use it they are implying that ‘fashion’ as a concept is something to be pro or anti
i find people have a similar relationship with ‘art’ too. something can be ‘art’ and something can’t, because the idea of ‘art’ is something very heavy
when really ‘art’ as a word is a descriptor more than anything
are there fundamental differences between ‘fashion’ and ‘clothes’ because to use that logic to me implies that ‘fashion’ is much much more than how one dresses oneself
it’s really interesting to use demna as an example because he acknowledges that video game logo t shirts, crocs, cargo shorts, the sporty cycling sunglasses that apparently only dads wear are all ‘fashion’ because his definition of it is all encompassing. fashion is fashion, no matter what it looks like

You should read Wittgenstein's philosophical investigations and Weitz article on the definition of art, in which he apply Wittgenstein's “open concept”. A quote from Weitz article: way: "The problem of the nature of art is like that of the nature of games, at least in these respects: If we actually look and see what it is that we call 'art,' we will also find no common properties-only strands of similarities. Knowing what art is is not apprehending some manifest or latent essence but being able to recognize, describe, and explain those things we call 'art'
in virtue of these similarities...But the basic resemblance between these concepts is their open texture.
In elucidating them, certain (paradigm) cases can be given, about which there can be no question as to their being correctly described as 'art', but no exhaustive set of cases can be given. I can list some cases and some conditions under which I can apply correctly the concept of art but I cannot list all of them.”
A concept is open if its conditions of application are emendable and corrigible, if a situation or case can be imagined or secured which would call for some sort of decision on our part to extend the use of the concept to cover this, or to close the concept and invent a new one to deal with
the new case and its new property. I find this way of approaching the definition of art, and maybe fashion (although fascino will be always much more similar to design due to its reproducibility), very persuasive.
I was brought in by tumblr in 2013/2014 to cover the fashion shows with a bunch of other tumblr creators. At one point they introduced us to WGSN at an event where they showed us how they were using our images as mood boards in their forecasting. It made me sick because I realized the culture vultures truly had an eagle eye on all of us.
So I think "anti-fashion" is dead. As you said in the video - it was a specific movement against so called "taste-makers" of a now bygone era. I think we exist in a post-trend era, everything is happening at once and being endless copied at once in one big global mixing pot.
I also don't think Demna's work is anti-fashion but rather satire/parody. He's basically Warhol for fashion (just an observation not a negative critique!)
and so I think he's actually very trend/culture conscious. Plus even if he began as anti-fashion his style was immediately picked up and became mainstream fashion through trend forecasting.
I don't think we'll ever see any form of genuine counterculture of any kind, in any field, ever again under our current economic, political and cultural system.

@@drek273 @dre k I don't think many designers are trying to avant-garde at all tbh. That would be pushing things forward - which, imo, is exactly what we're not seeing in this era of fashion.
The only characteristic I can determine to define "Antifashion" would be what Yohji talks about: being trend-less. Not being the opposite, not criticising but actually not even interacting with them.
As far as I can tell, it comes from Zen buddhist mindset of nothing vs no thing. Nothing is the opposite of something (which means there's comparison). No thing means there's literally no thing.
Unfortunately with trend forecasting. There's literally no way to not be affected by the parasites that do these studies. Since they'll come to shows, study your designs online, etc, etc. They've ruined fashion for everyone.

I think its simple, because all designers now find it trendy and are taught at uni to be anti-fashion, everything has become anti fashion, therefor if you truly want to be as anti-fashion as yohji you should be creating anti anti-fashion
such a good discussion, especially for young designers entering the industry! i tag my work as anti-fashion (you actually scrolled by a couple of my pieces in your intro😁🤭) - and when i say i’m ‘anti-fashion’ what i try to convey is that i’m ‘anti-industry’ or against the over-consumptive aggressively capitalistic nature of the current fashion industry. but the idea that it’s almost impossible to truly be ‘anti-fashion’ in today’s climate is so interesting!!

I think we already tried to do that before, with Normcore. Not sure how well it worked, but a lot of people i know have complained their 'normcore' outfits didnt seem ironic, but just basic
I think to make normcore work everything but your clothes have to be Alternative - heavy Piercings, crazy coloured hair and/or tattoos are what makes cargo shorts and a checkered button down interesting, because it subverts expectation. Otherwise it really is just a basic outfit with good intent
Normcore happend at the same time as athleisure, and people ended up mixing those two trends and creating (in my opinion) a very lazy and cowardly aesthetic. To me, it read as "I don't want to participate in the trend cycle, but I also don't have anything interesting or personal to express, so my style os just a non style". It looked like lack of commitment. Like a poker face that covers a person's entire body.
I think you bring up some really good points about Demna. I think he has escaped the trend machine in the ways you describe (by looking to “normal” people for inspiration etc.) but as someone who has been using WGSN and other forecasting firms for 2+ years in school and just seeing the zeitgeist generally, Demna has had a huge and undeniable impact on trends. For goodness’s sake a lot of forecasting companies are still saying chunky footwear silhouettes are the way to go🤷♂️ . Plus his takes on vintage sportswear, boxy tailoring, meme-y”promotional material etc. have been adopted more widely as a result. At the end of the day I think you’re right, we live in a post “anti-fashion” era.

I feel like Demna's work, especially the examples you talked about fall more into the realm of 'camp' and not anti-fashion. I feel like these examples and designers like Jeremy Scott or even Viktor and Rolf fall more into the irony of mocking what other people like or, if not like, at least what people buy and consume rather than offering something new. the old anti fashion collections by Rei Kawakubo and Yohji did not need to directly reference what they were rebelling against, they just offered a new and different option for what fashion could look like.

Hang on a minute...so the whole fashion industry uses an extremely expensive service that apparently predicts trends so that they can make clothes to fit with this trend that is going to happen...is this not obviously a scam...?
I figured that out at around 12 when I started studying this topic & read "forecast" books.
The thing is that this forecast uses a more subtle approach,
They're very good at getting their scam to be beneficial for the people they're trying to scam.
Not really... the stats are based on social, political and economic research... so they’re usually spot on and realistic... However, the designers are free to interpret those predictions many different ways

You can’t have anti fashion without recognizing current trends so immediately it’s a critique of pop culture. Demna has been doing this for the entirety of his career from vetements to balenciaga for sure. Industry’s so saturated it’s hard to stand out in opposition like he has; can’t think of another designer that has dug under Hf’s skin
Personally, I am super stoked to see people backing away from fast fashion, and even better, making their own clothes. History bounding is a really cool thing. I will be making my own clothes from now on, with as much upcycled materials as possible, and if I purchase any fabrics, and any I save will be natural if at all possible. No more wearing plastic! My clothes will be made to last me the rest of my lifetime. I always love when people choose to be themselves, not what media or fashion says they should wear.

its kind of paradoxical to think of an "anti-fashion" designer, like i feel think it makes sense for it to exist more in theory than it does in runway shows and catwalks.
For a long time, it was just a category that the industry came up with and used in articles. Just industry lingo 🤷 But I agree with you. Very hard category to fit into now in any meaningful way.

I’ve always felt that fashion was shallow. And that all my clothes someone else decided was good even if I do get it from Walmart.
Demna lived in one of the most devastating moments in history of soviet union.I think this helped him a lot because all I can see is post soviet ''romantic'' in his work.I'm from Ukraine and every time I see vetements collection i think that i have already seen many of his styles on streats of my city and many other postsoviet cities. His anti-fashion is a little bit sad for me, and boring .

Ralph Lauren has always been the ultimate "anti-fashion" designer. Style, good taste and themes have secured his company's longevity.
Thoughts on anti fashion. I think as a culture were obsessed with labels and putting ourselves in a specific kind of box (or identity). Be it avante garde or streetwear or anti fashion I think fixation on these labels kinda forces us to operate in a specific box defined by these terms.
I think anti fashion should be more of an ethos than a label we put on ourselves. If artists treat it as an ethos, you're able to express yourself outside the confines of the conventions defined by the industry while still actively being a part of the community as a whole.
I think this ideology across the board will do a lot more for us as artists or fans of the art or just people really. Just taking an ethos you believe in expressing yourself through that.

I just loved this video it gave me so much perspective on how the fashion industry has developed into something that seems pretty superficial to me. like the originality and new ideas are just created by the people that are styling them and repurposed into something marketable turning fashion into buy and demand rather than focusing on creativity and design
the runway model photos of tons of jackets layered on seems like they were trying to imitate those airport travellers who went over the airway baggage allowance, but they also don't wanna pay extra so they wore their clothes X)

Ughh I had the most beautiful y3 cashmere zip up sweater in my early 20s. I found it at a consignment store and loved how timeless and unique it was. Someone stole it. Im sure they look fabulous in it

I feel like one could argue that artists such as Iris Van Herpen or Kei Ninomiya are antifashion designers. By creating clothing with unique shapes and principles that aren't meant to be worn by the average person, are they not foregoing trends?
I'd say that's fashion fashion not anti-fashion. Fashion fashion is next to no wearability while anti-fashion is typically the opposite

She is just simply couture. If we looked at only shapes, “not meant to be worn by the average person” then most Regency, Victorian, Edwardian gowns would be anti fashion by this standard.

I also find Demna's work poltical I guess based on his background . I find his work truly thoughtful . Yamato , Kawakubo and Miyake are three designers I followed in the late 80-90's i think these are 4 good examples .

Love this video 🎀 I must say anti fashion is evolved but the core value is just wearing whatever you love no matter what trend or what seasons. Sometimes, it became a term used for marketing purposes for branding.
I'll be honest, I am female and the epitome of my fashion is basically high school neckbeard. I almost exclusively wear graphic tee shirts, cargo pants, sweatpants, hoodies, and tennis shoes. The added element to this is that being part of the working class means that it is sometimes necessary to turn to fast fashion in order to afford clothes, and my comfort and the utility of my clothes matter much more than how I think other people perceive me.
Anti-fashion should just be people walking around nude 😳 (this is a joke, by the way)

Basiciallly it’s the ultimate sociological question of whether individual can discard/minimize the social/structural impact on their decision making. And to what extend can individuals have impact on the society? And the ambiguity between these two directions existed in the boundary of “fashion”
When anti-fashion and avant-garde became fashionable they ceased to exist.

Also homeless people exist, the very poor, albeit unknowingly themselves ARE anti fashion. It will always exist. That’s all it really ever was anyways, lol, from a designer’s perspective it’s too obvious, contextualizing the “poor” fashion experience and making it “rich”.
Your logic is too simple, anything in the past was a period of time that “can’t be repeated.” History tends to repeat itself isn’t a quote for no reason, however.

WGSN still does capture current trends and memes, but the question in the industry is always, "will this sell?"
That's where other companies like my previous job at Omnilytics come in, who analyze sales and price movements, so companies have even better real time insights into trends.
But then there's the question of chicken and egg, do you design based on demand, or does demand come after design?
That's really something I haven't ever thought of 👍🏻

In my teens, not so long ago since I'm 20, I was kinda rebel and anti everything so I was in some way "anti fashion" in the way that you said it; I genuinely didn't care about what clothes I was wearing not because I completely ignored the fashion industry but because I hated the system (especially at its peaks of contribuiting to eating disorders and other mental disorders) so I didn't wanna be part of anything like that, somehow in my head that is how it worked and in fact before even Billie Eilish (maybe she is a big representation of this generation) I was wearing oversizes clothes until it became popular but me would feel anti-Victoria Secret and Forever 21 yet I was stanning Cara Delevigne so it is impossible to be anti fashion. Even when I was wearing the clothes of my mom from the 90s and 80s, Netflix started making shows about the 80s and suddenly everything was fashion again. So yeah, I guess my point is that it is impossible to be anti fashion because believe or not you're gonna ended up influencing everyone around you til it gets to a fashion designer, based on a true story.

Those people, Denma took inspiration from, do care how they look, they just do not have money or clothes anywhere they can reach. They try to copy what they see on tv with what they have.
For you it might be an unusual style, but I’ve lived near people dressed like this, 20-30 years ago.
Isn’t it “anti fashion” when someone decides to not buy clothes in “normal” stores or “regular” online shops, but just go to thrift stores or sews their own clothes with vintage sewing patterns and just wear what they like, instead of looking what is “in fashion, trendy” ? For example my dear 74 year old neighbour only buys in thrift stores, last week her new outfit was a flower pattern 5 pocket trousers with a matching green teeshirt and over that in a slightly different not matching green color hoodie vest with name prints of the brand ( björn borg) al over it? So by the mainstream fashion it would be considered as “bad taste “ but what is bad taste for one can be just wonderful for another. And what about all those mostly young ppl who are defining themselves to a certain aesthetic, like dark or light or withy academia? Indeed they don’t look for a certain designer but yes designers take on those trends again in their following collections, like I read in other comments when there are subculture groups the fashion industry take it on in following collections. Anyway just wear what you want if it is from Zara or from your grandmother, just be yourself.

I am a music producer and beat maker who is always looking at trends and following different musical styles. I have noticed lately a similar trend for Vaporwave or Synthwave. These samples and beats are coming out in a lot of the underground artists. I am noticing people recreating a modern nostalgia for things they once knew. Almost the newest form of nostalgia. Which is saw in the "E" internet explorer shirt that you showed which to me felt oddly relatable.

I definitely see what you’re saying, and as a layperson concerning fashion, I think there’s some truth to the fact that most people have more pressing things to worry about than the clothes that they’re wearing.
However, I am wary of completely discounting T-shirts as a fashionable item (or counting snuggies as clothes) when talking about whether most people care about fashion.
Like, I make and mend my own clothes, but I also buy T-shirts when they’re sold by someone I like and I think they look good. I style T-shirts along with thrifted, custom, and homemade clothes, and I want them to look good. I want the colors to match. I want the cut/size to be right. I want the whole look to be cohesive just like any other item of clothing that I own.
In other words, I don’t wear t-shirts because I don’t care, I wear them because I genuinely like them. I don’t think I’m alone in that.

I feel like it's almost impossible to stay Anti fashion FOREVER. Because at some point of time someone comes up with something revolutionary at the point, but eventually as everyone will follow that and it becomes a trend. Which will piss off some people who only seeks for rare and "against the norm" type of stuff. I think so many people who are into fashion really understands what they really like, and they just constantly look for something that most people don't know.
Just finished the vid. i dont own a Snuggie hahaha. This is so insightful. I recognise the power of WGSN when I worked as a shoe designer and no matter how I fight for a design, the styles and colour that WGSN dictated have more weight than my vision. Also when every label and designer was releasing cowboy themed boots ( 2016-2017) even to the point of Rick Owens making his own version I thought to myself f*ck the wizard of WGSN is playing Simon Says again!
It is what it is. The only thing we can do as consumers is to choose wisely and consume responsibly ( whatever that means lol)

I love it when you state that anti fashion is anti system , but all the collections are still presented in mainstream runways, in fashion capitals and featured on the most systemic media globally. I like the concept of anti-fashion being the ability to create without following trends, but I think that to really and truly be an anti fashion designer you need to stay low key and independent. Once everyone wants your designs, there's no way out, you are in fashion, you are fashion. I loved this video!
I had no idea this channel existed until now but I instantly subscribed. And I agree with your points, anti fashion has HAD to change as an idea or a concept if it wanted to continue to be part of our now entirely consumeristic and “trendy” fashion scene. Demna’s clothes are exactly what you said, what everyone else wears. It’s what my dad wears, what the crazy woman on the subway train wears, he’s not getting inspiration from, “Peruvian geoscapes” or anything else people can call “contrived” he’s getting it from us. His work his almost, mocking the Chanel Grocery and Airport show because, no one wears those clothes to airports or to the grocery store. You wear whatever you wore to work and you bring a snuggie to keep warm on the plane.
