- We care deeply about color in paint, design, makeup and photography, but color has been a dominant idea and discussion surrounding fashion since its inception. Along that comes yearly trends in color broadly but that always translates into yearly fashion trends. In this video, I answer questions like which classic color schemes never go out of style, gatekeeping in 2023, beef between fashion communities, why runway shows are boring, disruption in the fashion industry, the best fashion writers and fashion news updates.

I almost only wear black, it started because it’s cheaper for me to buy same color clothes to mix and match, but over the years it’s become a part of me. Here in Costa Rica barely anyone wears black, but I find comfort in it. It feels like I’m not a part of a crowd, but at the same time I don’t stand out. It allows me to express myself, afford a ton of cool shapes and silhouettes, and it all goes together! It also boldens any pop of color I might add.
On a more personal level I’m very antisocial, so wearing a black bandana around my head and a simple all black fit makes me comfortable, if somewhat un approachable. It’s a very effective way for me to “feel” cool and at the same time keep to myself.
this is lovely, thanks for sharing!!
It's interesting that in "gender bending" circles there are still unspoken "rules" about what is masculine and feminine. For example, I remember getting made fun of for wearing blue lipstick to a goth rave back in 2009, because anything other than black or dark red lipstick was seen as effeminate. So even in cultures that seek to deliberately subvert gender norms there are subtle gender norms. It's interesting you mentioned this with skirts. I wouldn't be surprised if mens skirts are completely different from women's skirts, just like how even men's skinny jeans have more of a sag at the crotch where as women's skinny jeans are body hugging and "lift and seperate" lol.
YES! this comment is absolutely on point, i would point out that often the tweaks to similar designs (ie skirts or skinny jeans) targeted at men vs women are often really just about comfort or making the clothes more flattering for a different body type than they were originally created for, but your bigger point about “gender bending rules” or norms absolutely stands. i was discussing the origin of fashion sub cultures and counter culture in general with a friend a while ago and one of the most interesting topics to come up was how counter culture as a concept both implies and requires a base understanding of the “culture” it is rebelling against. in my experience this can be found rampant in queer spaces as well where there is such a long and rich history of subtextual visual and performative language that the community as a whole is really struggling to make the shift away from the detailed, structured code of older generations to the more open and fluid attitudes of younger queer people such as myself. point being, i feel like any time subtextual rebellion is elevated out of the realm of subtext it’s structure tends to break down in ways that are deeply challenging for their communities and identities. just my 2c, hope you’re still rocking the blue lipstick!
Yeah I've noticed this but never have put it to words, very well said
Mens fashion skirts still stick to culturally established instances of mens skirts, like kilts, ihram and other religious robey garb, etc. Shorter ones are often presented as layers rather than standalone. The silhouettes tend to be straight and boxy, "masculine", I don't think I've ever seen anything flouncy or delicate.
@rz1974 exactly haha, or they add extra "utility" functions, lots of pockets or Waterproof materials. If a man is wearing a skirt and isn't crossdressing, amd it isn't some kind of traditional garment, there's a high chance it's "layered" , boxy, and or has tons of pockets.
@@unfairisle thank you
Kinda funny to me that now after watching a lot of your videos I see the runway fashion shows completely differently. I see them now as like temporary collections of art shown in museums or in galleries. Thinking more about it, I see them the same way as the Paris Salons from the late 1800s for paintings.
Architecture students would be lost if they were forced to wear colour. Back in university in the 90's you could spot them easily with their black ensembles and eye twitches (poor things overdosed on Jolt and coffee).
One thing to keep in mind about black - it will reflect every possible variation in skin tone into something more jewel like.

hey, to everyone who is interested in the question of what art is, i would strongly recommend you diving into aesthetic theory (if you have not already done so). there are many theories out there… for example, what bliss just proposed, reminded me of nelson goodman‘s views (in Languages of Art) and of Arthur Danto’s conception (in Artworld). also, there is a very cool philosopher and youtuber, "philosophy tube", who made an introductory video about aestehtics :)
As a lover of fashion and of beauty I could have an insatiable closet, but learning about my lines and my best colors has given me a container to create within. Black is not a huge part of my color story because I don't shine in it, but I still keep some timeless pieces because of the impact
3:16 Geeking out is just fun. I like fashion, but I'm not particularly a fashion enthusiast, I'm more of an enthusiasm enthusiast? I like seeing people unironically and joyfully interested in and knowledgeable about stuff. You're a good example of this, so is Generation Tech digging into the minutiae of Star Wars, and so is Rachel Maddow fangirling over the White House Correspondence Dinner. Unironic enthusiasm like yours is a nice break from the cynicism of the wider world.
In Addition to the Book Recommendations I want to add „what Artists wear“ - its Great to learn about the different meanings of what clothes can have for you but also for other people.
I love how the youtube algo bombards me suggestions to these fashion/streetwear "experts" who are all about the all-black and minimalism. 😂
I think art is less of a thing and more of a relationship, it's what happens between a piece and the person looking at/experiencing it. So when I go to a museum I ask myself if a piece is art to me, or if art is happening in the air between the piece and myself. Stuff I don't like isn't art...to me
Kaat Debo looks like your long lost sister. Keep up the amazing content!
Bliss... I love your work.. thank you so much.
Lol your unbridled passion saying "Great question!"@ 09:15 was invigorating.
Super helpful videos bliss,
I’ve been looking into more cult/folklore-ish styles, is there anything in that realm that you know of?
Bliss, my question, as an emerging designer, I love fashion and I think shows are amazing. I would like to see you address construction of the inside of the garments. Example, can you wear your garment inside out. I would love you to address the construction of contour construction.
More videos on books please! (Library/shelf tour?)
love you bliss
Thank you
I love that Loewe t shirt! What season is it from?
I actually never figured that out 🤔
what show/designer is that at 4:42? the pants immediately caught my eye lol
me listening to dance music in my bed 🫣
black is an easy color to wear and it’s sleek
your outfit in this video >>>. my favourite from you.
God i love his t-shirt!!🥲
All-white is wedding dress
Why you dont said about Dana Thomas? she is the best
5:59 that looks like your hair
Thanks for this! I hate Black... Never wear it... It does look uniformely and boring... And i do not link it with elegance
You're a great guy, but this video is clickbait, a.k.a. the title of the video does not cover the content of the video.
destroy lonely
haven’t / won’t watch the video but no
It's timeless
You always deliver great videos! Let’s be friends.
Seeing fashion weeks as actual business fairs opened my eyes for why I also sometimes feel like they don’t really reflect the actual people participating in it. And great explanation of art!
fancy seeing you here Tuba haha a long-term sub waving at ya!
@@by_sha haha hiiii!
There’s a funny meme where everyone in the art industry should be wearing colorful clothes, but the fashion industry gets a pass because so many of us designers wear black lol.
Architecture designers also wear a lot of black.
Its because the fashion industry is so depressing lol
Uh, vampires tend to wear all black ...and that is pretty gender neutral ....especially at night.
Wearing black all the time can be really depressing so I’ve definitely been wearing more color and white…it helps my mood be uplifted and helps me be a happier person
Bliss literally dropped gold when he shared all these amazing fashion writers. Checking them all out ASAP!
I used to wear exclusively black all through hs and into my early young adult life. I thought it was punk and it made putting outfits together real easy. Eventually I felt bored and even trapped in my own fashion at times. As I matured I moved away from black and into more dark earthy colours. In modern day I never wear black or white anymore bc in my own personal life it is played out.
Also on a side note I cannot stand how things made for men must be black. This includes furniture, desks, tv stands, book cases, computer cases, phones and especially back packs.
So what's your take on the whole Balenciaga thing? You aloud yourself a somewhat of a fashion historian is the impression I get from you I'm sure you have something interesting an insightful to say about it. Would love to see a video on that topic. Thanks!
The easiest and most pragmatic point for me for wearing mostly all-black is that it's so much less effort for washing clothes. With colored stuff you always need to sort and check what you can wash together. With black, just throw it in there, whatever. Big time saver.
not really, unless you wash hot nowadays you can just throw everything together.
omg that Experimental Fashion book TOOK ME BACK! I had that YEARS ago at my parent's house, its phenomenal
I've been loving dark gray... Not for whole outfits, but it's SO easy to incorporate with colors where black is just a bit too hard of a contrast for me, or whatever the issue may be. Love the way it pops with pastel colors, it's imo overal much nicer with darker brown, just give it a try, dark gray sweats are a HUGE staple for me.
just googled "that one chanel bikini top you know which one". didn't work. but "that one chanel bikini top you know which one RUNWAY" did
Ohhh Yeeees ! Black is a timeless and classic color in fashion. It is often associated with elegance, sophistication, and luxury. Black is also a versatile color that can be dressed up or down, making it a staple in any wardrobe.
Black can also be edgy and rebellious, making it a favorite among those who follow alternative fashion trends. It is often used in leather jackets, boots, and other punk or gothic-inspired clothing.
Overall, black is a classic and essential color in fashion that can be worn for any occasion.
I use black as a basis. If it doesn’t look good in black, it doesn’t look good in any other color. Unfortunately, this does mean I have to have the black version first. 😆
And black is not even a color. It’s a shade
It's also a terrible thing to wear as a pedestrian in my neighborhood, and yet!
no way this wasn't written by ChatGPT
"Black can also be edgy and rebellious" Except everyone wears all black here in the Netherlands, with sneakers. So not edgy and rebellious at all. It's become a uniform of conformity.
black doesn't show stains so you can be more active in it and not worry as much about keeping it clean
Wearing all black, isn’t all that difficult. Either A) your intent is to look anonymous or B) you work with the interplay of light and shadow.
i will not stand for this indigo and jean slander
Saw this DAYS AGO CUZ I JOINED THE PATREON 🤝🤝🤝🤝❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️Join the patreon people.
you will never catch me in all black, even if you paid me
Surprised we didn't here about stylezeitgeist when Eugene Rabkin came up.
i only wear black bc im scared of matching colours 😭
a lotta peeps in fashion are thinner and get cold easier and black retains heat the most of all the colors
trade show is a great way to put why runway shoes are formulaic. they are an art but ultimately have to be practical so we need to see the models be able to walk in the clothes and the shoes 🖤
Wearing black is for the young. Enjoy it now , cause when you get older you just look like you came from a funeral or you're going to one. Last time I wore black I was asked if I was in mourning.
Nobody seeing my bare arms anymore unless it's at the pool. I don't know what Rick's doing.
Black is perfect all the time aside from the hotter months
In Scandinavia black outfits have been the normal since before the 90ties. Almost no other colours in stores, and for partys black, for job black. Soon nobody could match colours any more. Its easy to dress in the morning people said. I had to bye vintage clothes to get something with colours. I feel that black is coming back again. I wear indigo, white, warm browns.....and I have black classics if I need them, probably with big white skirts or shirts 80ies drama. But black clothing has always being stylish in Scandinavian brands. Cool blondes in black dresses.
probably because dark colours absorb warmth, i notice clothes in most cold countries have black as popular wearing colour, lots of dark colours here in ireland too
True black and white arent considered colours, i like to use shades when working out styles like this. But most clothes if you study even closer you'll notice they're not even black or white at all, normally a mix of different CMYK pigments leaning toward a colour. But because they contrast with something that isn't "black or white" our eyes just refer to them as black or white.
Bc black is so opium destroy lonely teen x core
re: black suit at the beginning, see:Fallen Angel by Wong Kar Wai and the spirit of the assassin character that wears a black suit (an example semi-related to the following comments). Black suits are considered hard to style according to a couple sartorial circles/traditions, it seems. When I choose to wear the black suit, I am just trying to match the clothes to my spirit appropriate to the occasion. The suit has to feel invisible to the wearer, and just an appropriate accessary to the spirit of the wearer. I think finding/seeking-out that spirit bc you want to wear the suit is good, and I also think the suit finding the wearer is nice too, you can approach it from both ways.
Im getting massive deja vu in this video. Did you cover wearing black before?
I often use black and red, which effectively makes them black, white, and red. The story behind that is I use to save money on ink with buying only black, red, and sometimes make lime green.
And that tendency has carried over into how I design outfits. So if I made outfitd, Id likely create a red and lime plaid pattern.
This has led to miscommunications like the assumption Im a Goth Rock fan. I am of course. But thats not why I like the colors.
LOL now is that TEAL or CERULEAN?
Thanks for this vids, Bliss, always a great conversation. One thing that always bothers me is when people passionately say that fashion is art, or that fashion is more arts & crafts, or Fashion is not art…Fashion can be all things and nothing at the same time. It’s an interesting time to be living in where we have so much media to consume & everyone is a ‘designer’ these days…where many of us are multi-hyphenated and do not wish to be put in a certain box, but also we want to still connect to someone in a group of sorts. It’s all coming from different viewpoints. LOL 😊
Hey Bliss. Could you please make a video on why luxury niche, independent fashion is so expensive? Almost no one understands it yet, and I find it difficult to FULLY explain ALL of the reasons every time - because there are just so many. I feel like you'd do it better and more thoroughly than I ever could. Thank you.
BLISS, we need a video on gym clothing and shoes! Thank you for the vids! Everyone go support Bliss on his patreon RN!
hey bliss thanks for another great and in depth video, especially considering the range of topics! Who was the collection at 9:16-9-23 by? I love the way you speak about men's clothing also having it's own ways of taking and coding womenswear traditions, if I understood that correctly 💌
love the videos every time, it teaches us noobs a lot 💐
The recent Dries van Noten Mens show 💫💫
Bliss your hair looks great
Alex Fury and Rian Phin are really good fashion journalists/ people also
I love black now. When I was younger I’d be like BLACK? I also thought propaganda wasn’t real…my art teacher whose favorite color was black was like ARE YOU SERIOUS?
All black goes together. It makes life easier. Bill Blass said he works in color all day, so black or grey was the easiest thing to wear, he didn’t want to deal with color to go deal with color.
I have a hard time wearing black and I think it's because I'm a soft summer. My complexion is very muted; the sharpness of black tends to cut through and stand apart from me. I look washed out and green. My go to dark neutral is navy or charcoal; those colors harmonize better with my cool/muted undertones.
Yes, contrary to the prevailing opinion, black doesn't suit everyone!
I was thinking a couple of years back what men's dresses would look like if they had evolved to accentuate a more masculine figure. Maybe we'll see that soon.
Happy New Year ! I’m excited to learn more from you in 2023 😊👍🏼💖
I would love if you did another, updated video on fashion book recommendations! I loved the last one and I'm looking for some fashion book recs!
I switched to wearing only black a few years ago. I did it because its more sustainable as you only need a few black clothes and its easy everything goes with everything. Black clothes can also be dyed naturally and you can focus on higher quality pieces when you only own a few. I was also inspired by yohji yamamoto and his view on the color black. I feel like its also a kind of rebellious way to dress all black all the time and not fitting into whatever trends are in (the irony is that all black is trendy now because of kanye and balenciaga)
Am I the only person who doesn’t like jeans?
The logic question has my crying 🤣
Good reminder about what the runway experience really should be
And the disruption in menswear (finally) is super exciting
I really appreciate your generosity in sharing your thoughts not just about designers but also other fashion experts. It’s great to see how you encourage diverse, critical thinking and sharing of perspectives.
Great video!
Because its a good color. Other colors are fun and all, but in the end black is great
I would add Robin Givhan to your fashion writers list! Washington Post, if you don't already know her!
I love you too, and I wear black much of the time. It can be chic, sophisticated, classy. edgy, or anonymous but most of all timeless
Love your video's, i saw 2 frames of Slan from Berserk on your Discord server when you scrolled through footage. Approved.
A black outfit with textures, Shapes, and/or different hues of black is so beautiful though ! At least in person, given that the camera doesn’t usually capture the nuances well. Just like a Soulages painting : nice in photo, amazing in person.
Also, YES, SHARING INFORMATIONS !! Getting one (1) question and INFODUMPING THE PERSON FOR THE REST OF THE DAY !!!
I find it surprising that you're saying a full white look gives Hamptons vibes... That coming from you doesn’t make sense to me. If that's all your mind can come up with, especially when you have so much knowledge about fashion... it's bizarre 🙃
LOL I know exactly who you were referencing when you were talking about gatekeeping and you are totally right about him. That literally had me dying laughing 😂
each of these questions coulda been their whole own video lol very interesting
I read in an old book that Yohji got a lot of designers to wear all black in the late 80s early 90s
That Dries collection had some of best skirts I’ve ever seen period.
im just here bc im in my all-black yohji phase
It’s not a phase, mom!
ayyy i'm early love u bliss!! even though i don't comment much you've been a part of my routine since 2021!! happy new year
7:30 me on my phone in bed 😱👀
amen about vanessa. and tim blanks' voice is one of my safe spaces
johnathan van ness from queer eye is not a man they are non binary
I did not know that. Wow, thank you for the correction 💫💫
But We See You There
It’s because black is one of the stock colors in textile production, so it’s cheaper to buy and make clothes in black . That’s why yohji and comme did all black when they started - it’s cheap. Of course , to sell that, they have to say black is whatever art history terms they can conjure up, but ultimately, it’s because they can make a huge profit on it .
That art being art because it exists in a Museum part is another answer to why V went to LV
No need to watch your response, all black is the supremly best color, all other subjective opinions are wrong
L0L I was waiting for this one 😂
What could be more black? The answer is none, none more black...
But for real where’s the bathroom
You’ve taught me so much Bliss!
Y’all need to learn to sew. If you think shows are boring it’s because you are missing 80% of it. These are kinetic sculptures that people built and you aren’t getting why they’re masterpieces.
Hi Elizabeth! Wow, you’ve really taken a liking to the channel! Welcome in 🦾
I’d love to continue to hear your thoughts as you watch thru more videos 💫💫
