I was stationed in Guam back in the 1980's. There was a ramen shop there called Aji Ichi. There I had ramen for the first time. I also had Gyoza, and a lifelong obsession was born. I finally had to learn to make it myself, since finding it in the midwest isn't easy. Would I be ridiculous if I flew to Japan just to eat Gyoza? Because I'm thinking about it.
@@stoveguy2133 Yes, but I live in a town of 1200 in the middle of the country. It takes over an hour by interstate to get anywhere that would have gyoza. And the last time I had it, it wasn't very good. It would be best to get it from the source. Hence, me planning a trip to Japan. I'm retired, I can do that.
My family has been having gyoza as a main dish since the mid-1660’s. All of us kids loved gyoza so much that my mother would make a huge batch of filling and set all of us kids down at the table to make the filled gyoza. She said we could only eat as many as we made, which meant one brother who could eat a huge amount of gyoza was left sitting at the table by himself after the rest of us were done, happily filling gyoza skins knowing they were all his! We ate gyoza, rice, and home made Japanese pickles for dinner. These are some of the fondest memories from my childhood … thank you Okasan!
I don't even need rice to complement (good) gyozas. (especially when i make them at home) what i like the most about gyozas is that you can have them as a snack by having a few, while you can keep eating more of them until you're satisfied, as with any meal. and the crunchiness is so satisfying compared to other dumplings which are usually just boiled or steamed.

I just spent 3 weeks in Japan, and I have to say out of all the awesome food I tried, Gyoza stole my heart the most. They were so different than the ones I get back home in Canada. The Tare sauce is so damn addicting. I would go out late at night and just order 2 or 3 orders so I could eat like 20 gyoza all at once. The best were in Kagoshima in my opinion; the Kurobuta black pork makes them soooo juicy and delicious!
I grew up eating gyozas as main dish. Didn't know people ate them as side dish until I started to go out to eat ramen. Gyoza can definitely hold as its own. Although, I do love some good fried rice with gyozas!
It’s because you mainly get than at … ramen restaurants famous for ramen. Japanese families though often have gyoza parties and make their own, but visitors don’t have them at home.
Sayan4070 has it right. Gyoza are a main dish at home. I guess if your family is rich and never cooks at home then you might see them as a side. But if you ever actually make them you realize that it is really hard to only make 3/person. If you are already making the wrapping and filling you might as well make a meal.
I can guarantee if I tried to roll up one spindle full gyoza wrapping it would look like rolling up a 200 length of carpet. Those ladies got the skill! Thanks for the video John!
It's usually sold as a side dish or snack. That said, I would happily eat a plateful of these as a main. 🤤🤤 Love Leo's little happy dance after eating the gyoza. ☺
THIS WAS FASCINATING! Gyoza is one of my all time favorite things in life and your video was so informative. I think I will need to try alllllll the kinds out there!

Whether on it's own or as a side, gyoza are great any way in my book! Another great Japanese innovation with those chicken wing gyoza. Happy to see Kagoshima in the list for the gyoza battle. 🌋 One thing is for sure, gyoza are delicious and make people happy. You only needed to look how Leo was enjoying them! I'm hungry now John! 😋 🥟🥟🥟👍
Aw, that’s really nice! I love a good story, learning and sharing something new about what’s now my home - and a way to share what’s so special about it which is so much!
I never knew gyozas were such a thing down in Miyazaki! I'll make sure to add it to the list of destinations to visit next time! Also, gyoza can definitely be a main or side dish!
I thoroughly enjoy your videos, thank you for uploading them! Your work is likely the main reason I'm traveling to Japan in March :) As someone who doesn't eat fish, Gyozas look like a silver lining!
Recently I have visited Fukuoka, there are so many option to try the Hakata Ramen but I went to ramen Unari which John had in video that he made many years ago. It was not disappointed. Thanks to John for the great recommendation.
I get hungry every time I watch one of your food episodes. This one is no exception. I will be going to Mitsuwa Market to buy gyoza for dinner tonight.
I have to admire the dedication they have to make Gyoza, waking up at 4:30am. I would love to try them but I live in Springfield, lucky to who ever gets to eat them
Or - you can make them yourself. It’s actually quite easy and we DO NOT eat frozen gyoza often. Just need the skin / wrapper. It’s pork, garlic, chives - or ANYTHING really. And they taste just as good 😋 put them in a pan, add some oil or fat, water, cover them up for 4-5 minutes and you’ve got paradise gyoza
I think I've eaten like 2 dozen gyozas in a single sitting before, really like them cooked as potstickers (or guotie for those of you who like Chinese cooking), but I'm fine with steamed as well. Really goes well with dark vinegar and garlic too. Pretty cool to see that Leo is a fan of gyoza too!
I made gyozas today & ate 14, 7 veg & 7 chicken. I could eat more but I served with sesame ramen. Really nice comforting food in such cold weather. I also like pan fried, the two textures contrasting each other.
Ah, sad that utsunomiya lost!! Still can remember visiting and seeing the little dumpling statue!! Definitely a main for me, though i dont even eat it with rice, just full on dumplings mode.
Now I'm really craving gyoza. When I make them at home I use 50/50 beef and pork and make about 120 at a time. They go quickly as the main course! Thanks for the great video, John!
