Bad Brains were leaps and bounds above the rest. Their ferocious energy combined with amazing technical proficiency and musical volatility made them one of the more unique and innovative hardcore bands.
Katya Mills Did you ever see Bad Brains back in the day, Katya? I've been into punk for many years but somehow I've missed this band and I'm just discovering them now. They were so awesome. :D
PSYCHOTRONICbrdcst hi nice to meetya! i did not ever see them. i think they still tour, however. i dated the drummer for Reagan Youth (well, one of the drummers) for a little while and he turned me on to them, it was a few years ago and ive been addicted ever since!
Thanks, you too. I found live footage of them from last year but apparently HR has left the band (rumour has it he went a bit crazy or some such). But in any case, they changed to metal/crossover a long time ago, and musically they're a very different band as to how awesome they were in the early 80s. But you know all that much better than I. LOL
Seeing as how there must be 1000 other bands these guys are actually like, In what way is this anything like James Brown? Is it a Black thing you're hung up on? Help me out here.
"We don't care what you may say," especially about Slipknot being better!!! I love having some 18 year old kid telling us what the "early punk scene" was all about!!
Hardcore! Gawd, I'm thankful for the Bad Brains! Got to see em play a few times in Detroit in the 80's and still have everything up to Quickness at the ready.
Ingenious for the time, took rock to new speeds (this is before thrash), Look at HR, the singer, looks like he is dressed to go to the discotheque and decided to do this for fun. Respect Bad Brains.
LETSSS GOOO im a black 18 year old who lives in west orange NJ were all the blacks listen to rap. I thought I was only one who wasn't about that. IM NOt ALONE THANK YOU!!!!
It is hard to deny the technical prowess, and comprehension of the ethos, and yes, it is ironic that a genre, mostly associated with disaffected young white men would be perfected by a band of Jamaican Rastafarians. Very ironic indeed.
It´s Positive Mental Attitude !!!!!!! Don't care what they may say we got that attitude. Don't care what they may do we got that attitude. Hey we got that PMA. Hey we got the PMA. Hey we got the PMA.
saw them with Beastie Boys in 95, didn't even have a clue then, went and bought a cd, and found one in a collection of cds somebody stole, Rock for Light, blew my mind, as I get older I'm starting to realize the significance and affect they had on most early punk bands, especially East coast, insane!
i'm an old rudy, 43 years old, so obviously love this shit. this is from a time when hardcore/punk did what it said on the tin, not like the weak ass shit that's paraded all over mtv at present moment. long live the bad brains and yeah thanx for the memories!
if you like what you hear keep on listening don't worry what anybody thinks enjoy the bad brains and don't talk about skin color anyone can enjoy and make any type of music no matter how we look .i love the bad brains music i know what they look like and could care less if they were green i would still listen!
This was filmed by Paul Bishow in 1978, Paul has lent the footage to many films since. I believe he lent the footage to the Clash's manager, Don Letts as well as the upcoming HR documentary filmed by Shamus & Rob of Small Axe Prouctions. Paul Bishows' movie has been shown at the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art in New York & at the Hirshorn Museum of the Smithsonian Institute. Paul Bishow is on Facebook.
Imagine how you would feel listening to this for the first time in 1979
+giorgio tsoukalos Threatened. I might have stood my ground.
+giorgio tsoukalos aliens
they weren't the only punk band back then, lmao.
+Robyn Song They were the only hardcore punk band though
one of, on the east coast. but certainly not the only.
Never mind the Sex Pistols, here's the Bad Brains
SP brought something else. This was real straightedge American Hardcore at its peak
0:47 H.R showed us that rock is a danceable music genre
Bad Brains in 1979 swung...they swung harrrrrrrd. You could dance the hell out of this and slam into someone too
Bad Brains were leaps and bounds above the rest. Their ferocious energy combined with amazing technical proficiency and musical volatility made them one of the more unique and innovative hardcore bands.
Youd say the same about minor threat and ssd if they were black
@@brendendavis8596😂😂 nah he is just stating facts even Ian mackaye and Al Barile would agree with his comment today..
Pfft no comparison, bad brains is levels above minor threat, I like minor threat but every riff sounds the same@@brendendavis8596
And it was in 79! UNBELIEVABLE!
40 years since this dropped and i’m still bumping this in 2024
Greatest live punk performance EVER. That little breakdown dance jig to pull the mic back is spotless!
Gotta love the James Brown dancemoves. A really interesting testimony about the band's influences at the time.
Punk Pioneers at their Prime in '79, i love HR's dance moves, HOT
Too cool.
Katya Mills Did you ever see Bad Brains back in the day, Katya? I've been into punk for many years but somehow I've missed this band and I'm just discovering them now. They were so awesome. :D

Seeing as how there must be 1000 other bands these guys are actually like, In what way is this anything like James Brown? Is it a Black thing you're hung up on? Help me out here.
Best fucking comment.. James brown but punk
@@A1Authority You would need a 6 month course to understand.
@@rolandmarkland6844 So then, you've got nothing? Good show. Why even comment?
@@A1Authority Sounds like you need to be spoon fed. Stop being lazy and do your own research.
This by fuckin far the best live performance of any band.No one comes close to this Bad Brains era and I dare to anyone say different.

It is hard to deny the technical prowess, and comprehension of the ethos, and yes, it is ironic that a genre, mostly associated with disaffected young white men would be perfected by a band of Jamaican Rastafarians.
Very ironic indeed.
Now this is the Bad Brains I grew up with and loved! The late 80's Bad Brains really disappointed me, but so did most "hardcore" bands!

Goddamn, that little thrash-dance @ 0:47 is the reason why HR should be considered one of the best rock frontmen of all time.
