Artist city, country: Venice, California, U.S.A.
Artist Biography: Suicidal Tendencies is an American crossover thrash band founded in 1981 in Los Angeles, California by Mike Muir, its leader and only permanent member. The band is often credited as one of "the fathers of crossover thrash".
Suicidal Tendencies rose to fame with their 1983 self-titled debut album, which spawned the single "Institutionalized". That single was one of the first hardcore punk videos to receive substantial airplay on the music video outlets of that day and age.

When I say, "All I want is a Pepsi." Nobody ever gets the reference. I feel old.

It's just that "Old" was different when we were young... if that makes any sense. :)

This is the only song that shows what it's really like for a young person being misunderstood and attacked at all angles. He starts out just wanting time alone and then you literally hear the music fall apart and swirl up into a full mental breakdown. It's funny because my Mom also came into my room while i was staring at the ceiling and yelled at me for being on drugs when I was just tired from school.
First comment about it that I've seen. It's kind of unfortunate how most people's takeaway is "haha funney, he said a brand name". Now, I admit, the Pepsi bit is pretty (inevitably) humorous; but from a serious viewpoint, this is a great criticism of a universal experience, as well as ableism/sanism, being misunderstood, belittled, pathologized, and/or possibly abused.

All I wanted was a Pepsi!
It’s why I own chainsaws, motorcycles, kick ass stereo gear, and a big effn’ hammer collection.
I had nu metal for my teenage anger I felt back in the late 90s-early 2000s, but man oh MAN did this song encapsul how it was for me and my parents back then! From the church thing, wanting to seek therapy but being denied it, parents breaking my metal CDs because they thought it was "satanic" and making me "evil and depressed", etc.
Hard music is therapeutic, it kept me from hurting myself and others. Even if it was "Satanic music", we still have the free will to decide if it will influence us detrimentally.
@aofmual I’m aware of that lol. I’m just saying that Nu Metal also was an outlet for angry, young teens such as myself back in the prime of it who weren’t born around the time this song came out and bands like this in a way inspired bands after them to carry on the same message in a way to a new generation of teens back then.
Yup. I remember 29 years ago we were listening metal with school pal and his step dad was saying we were listening to stupid satanistic music. Now Time passed, im NOT a parent now and i still listening stupid satanistic music lol
its funny because i have corporate democrat liberal parents who treat me the same way, call me an evil 'nazi' because i wouldnt vote for biden
Do you really want Trump to do more constitutional damage to your country's institutions [pun not intended] though? Since you're stuck with a two horse race, surely the only decent thing to do is to make sure the aspiring dictator fascist is stopped. If that means voting for Biden, maybe you just gotta compromise this time.
It’s useful for this older man(57) to reconnect with the rage I felt when I was a kid listening to this. This song is so true for that. Don’t worry kids, it gets better (or, you get used to it, can’t tell which).

I like the idea of this theory
thats kinda how most songs happen......
I once wrote a song that my at-the-time-new-band-mates had only written music for, & had a chosen title, by playing the music in my car while delivering pizza all night & singing to it in the car. The final result is in my music Playlist on my user account. but his mom wasn't allowing him to have it.
He was probably high.
Yeah! There were like three in the fridge!
You know you did a good job when 40 years later you can’t even search for it without having to fill out a form on RUclips
I love this song, but goddamn dude just get your own Pepsi. You walked by the fridge, opened it, saw the Pepsi, and didn't take one. Mike not taking that fucking Pepsi when it was right there is making ME crazy!
Maybe it wasn't about the Pepsi at all
nah, it's not about pepsi, it's about railing against non-compliance in parents. this is a deep song about the problems of being young in a world that just does not feel like doing shit for you and will call you out for daring to ask
also i think he's just lazy
Kyle S. Lmfao your fucking crazy
Sometimes things just don't work out the way he wants them too

***** So you know he says "diet Pepsi" on a new track. I thought that was funny too. Getting old sucks.
same here lol
Sometimes we all just want a Pepsi...
Listening to Suicidal Tendencies while you have Suicidal Tendencies is extremely therapeutic and soothing im not joking btw guys nor trying to be funny it makes you feel alive and understood i dont even know how to explain it thanks to this band ive becomes more self aware of my self.
I resonated with this song as a teenager so much. My parents never took the time to hear me out, or ever really care about how I felt. They always just kicked me out, or chalked me up as a “troubled kid” when really a lot of what I was going through and the trauma I have was from them. This song perfectly expressed the anger and resentment I had towards the world at that time.
Hope you feel better now!
The slaves are annihilated. you think they are your parents, but they are imprisoned in a mental cell, they are dissociated, an altered ego that obeys the system governs in their place.
In other words, your parents have been assimilated by an alien race, like in that movie Alien.
It's kinda like that for everybody. For some parents it's a full-time job just keeping their kids out of prison. I think in the future you will see you actually had it pretty good.
I don’t think there is a more accurate representation of what having ADHD is like than this, I relate so much to the line “I was just staring at the wall thinking about everything, but then again I was thinking about nothing” whenever I get overwhelmed and space out
Just think about how kids would survive in the world of the 80's,most would last about 5 minutes
This is the most California thing I've ever seen

I will never be mad at my dad for showing me this band, he's a legend, i love these guys so much
Fun fact, the dad in this is Jack Nance who starred in David Lynch’s Eraserhead.
The mom is cult actress Mary Woronov.
Twin Peaks too

So unreal
Wow he got old as fuck fast. He looked so youthful and edgy in Eraserhead
Its crazy how many people come back to this everyday... this song is masterpiece!

Early 80s Gang bangers doing metal. Most 90s kids thought this look started in the 90s. Mind blown
it actually started in the late 1970's.
@@bconni2 wow, pretty rad
Yeah I'm from the UK so i know the punks came about in late 70's. I honestly thought this was 90's judging from the style, was surprised it was 1983. Thought it was like the Fugazi time period.

You're totally right tho. There are a bunch of ironic shiposts that are just angry vents like this and a lot of teens my age post them to more easily vent. Like there's this one meme that's literally just a cute Giorno Giovanna doll with the impact font text: i can't take it anymore | i'm srsly at my fucking limit. And there's another meme that's doge without a face morphed in a ball with the lyrics of One by Metallica. I don't know how the fuck we got here but who cares we're all gonna die in 20 years anyway.

i am 69 years old and my daughters fetus loves this
Now I have to go through an obstacle course to listen to this song?! "You're not alone." 😮
Suicidal Tendencies were just 16-17 years old when they made this great song. Respect. Long live 80's hardcore punk !
I'm not crazy...you're the one who's crazy
Best hardcore punk band EVER! Don't you think System of a Down kinda got their style from them?
Tat2- Beauti Yes a lot of bands imitated some of their style but h\that's cool because art imitates life, it has no other choice.
Doctor Benway Anyway, awesome song. Reminds me of the good old days!
Tat2- Beauti Im just happy that there is someone left that isn't ashamed to admit they liked and still enjoy the good old days. I will always be a hardcore punk at heart even though I am older and have more varied taste now. Cheers

Sometimes I try to do things and it just doesn't work out the way I want it to
I get real frustrated and I try hard to do it and I take my time and it doesn't work out the way I want it to
It's like I concentrate real hard and it doesn't work out
Everything I do and everything I try never turns out
It's like I need time to figure these things out
But there's always someone there going
Hey Mike:
You know we've been noticing you've been having a lot of problems lately
You know, maybe you should get away and maybe you should talk about it, maybe you'll feel a lot better
And I'm all like:
Oh nah it's ok you know I'll figure it out, just leave me alone I'll figure it out
You know I'm just working on it by myself
And they go:
Well you know if you want to talk about it I'll be here you know and you'll probably feel a lot better if you talk about it
So why don't you talk about it?
And I go:
No I don't want to I'm okay, I'll figure it out myself
But they just keep bugging me and they just keep bugging me, and it builds up inside
So you're gonna be institutionalized
You'll come out brainwashed with bloodshot eyes
You won't have anyting to say
They'll brainwash you until you see their way
I'm not crazy - Institutionalized
You're the one that's crazy - Institutionalized
You're driving me crazy - Institutionalized
They stuck me in an institution,
Said it was the only solution,
to give me the needed professional help
to protect me from the enemy - Myself
I was in my room and I was just like staring at the wall thinking about everything
But then again I was thinking about nothing
And then my mom came in and I didn't even know she was there
She called my name and I didn't hear her and then she started screaming: MIKE! MIKE!
And I go:
What, what's the matter?
She goes:
What's the matter with you?
I go:
There's nothing wrong mom
She's all:
Don't tell me that, you're on drugs!
I go:
No mom I'm not on drugs I'm okay, I was just thinking you know, why don't you get me a Pepsi
She goes:
NO you're on drugs!
I go:
Mom I'm okay, I'm just thinking
She goes:
No you're not thinking, you're on drugs! Normal people don't be acting that way!
I go:
Mom just get me a Pepsi, please
All I want is a Pepsi, and she wouldn't give it to me
All I wanted was a Pepsi, just one Pepsi, and she wouldn't give it to me
Just a Pepsi
They give you a white shirt with long sleeves
Tied around you're back, you're treated like thieves
Drug you up because they're lazy
It's too much work to help a crazy
I'm not crazy - Institutionalized
You're the one who's crazy - Institutionalized
You're driving me crazy - Institutionalized
They stuck me in an institution,
Said it was the only solution,
to give me the needed professional help,
to protect me from the enemy - Myself
I was sitting in my room when my mom and my dad came in and they pulled up a chair and they sat down
They go:
Mike, we need to talk to you
And I go:
Okay what's the matter?
They go:
Me and your mom have been noticing lately that you've been having a lot of problems
And you've been going off for no reason and we're afraid you're going to hurt somebody
And we're afraid you're going to hurt yourself
So we decided that it would be in you're best interest if we put you somewhere
Where you could get the help that you need
And I go:
Wait, what are you talking about, WE decided!?
MY best interests?! How do you know what MY best interest is?
How can you say what MY best interest is? What are you trying to say, I'M crazy?
When I went to YOUR schools, I went to YOUR churches
I went to YOUR institutional learning facilities?! So how can you say I'M crazy?
They say they're gonna fix my brain
Alleviate my suffering and my pain
But by the time they fix my head
Mentally I'll be dead
I'm not crazy - Institutionalized
You're the one who's crazy - Institutionalized
You're driving me crazy - Institutionalized
They stuck me in an institution
Said it was the only solution
to give me the needed professional help
to protect me from the enemy - Myself
Doesn't matter, I'll probably get hit by a car anyways

“Doesn’t matter I’m probably going to get hit by a car anyway.” I’m 48 now and I still say that to myself.

He didn't yell that at all
Growing up with anxiety and how I get frustrated easily, this hits hard
That song for when you just look up this song to jam and your phone tells you that "YOURE NOT ALONE"
I’m a 54-year-old executive, and this song means the same all these years. Fxxxxxx love it. Even after years in the Marine Corps, marriage, kids, home, etc. I’m going to get a Pepsi, just one Pepsi.
Did she give you a Pepsi?
ozbot87 yeah, my mom gave just one Pepsi when I was upset as a kid. It helped. Sometimes a Pepsi is all you need.
Hell yeah semper fi brother
Chase Davis I have two years to go (retiring 2023) and my body feels like it was beaten by a rhino. Torn rotator cuff, arthritis in cervical spine and shoulders. Surgery inevitable. That said, headed downstairs to workout, of course I’ll be listening to Suicidal Tendencies. Many would be surprised to know that, even though I’m supposed to be some sophisticated O-6, early punk is what still motivates me today. Semper Fidelis and God bless.
You know what I think? I think you're on drugs.
Holy crap I relate to this song so hard. Sometimes I try to do things and they don’t always work out, and it really gets me mad. I try really hard to concentrate on it. But I can’t do it. And it’s super frustrating. And it really sucks. And my parents are jerks. And they think I’m on drugs. And all I want is a Pepsi.

What it's like to be autistic with parents who don't understand anything about autism, the song. *cracks a cold Pepsi* (and before you go ape on me, I'm autistic and I relate to this song.
Never been officially diagnosed or anything but I highly suspect I'm on the spectrum and I love this song also for the same reason.
Me too. I was drugged a lot as a kid. Was so happy when I turned 18 and threw my pills away and told my psychiatrist to discharge me. My parents were so mad they called the cops and I said I'm 18. They have no legal authority to drug me anymore and I've never been okay with any of this. So the first chance I got I threw my pills out and refused to go get another prescription and now they're mad that this is the first choice I've made. They're shocked at how long I've wanted to do this. Tell them they have no right to force me to take drugs to put up with their f'd up drama.
Cops said they didn't think it was the best choice but it's mine to make. Police told my parents I was a legal adult and could make my own decisions and couldn't be forced onto drugs anymore. School system said I couldn't attend public school if I was unmedicated cuz I was still finishing out my senior year when I was 18. I thought about legally fighting them on that but decided it was easier to lie to the school and tell them what they want to hear to make them shut up and then turn around and change nothing.
@@Gnomezonbacon Bravo! I'm proud of you buddy for seeing through the lies and sticking through it! It obviously takes a lot of courage and intelligence to say that what you were told growing up was bullshit.
Most people unfortunately don't get to that point and they fully believe everything mainstream Psychiatry says is the bible. Despite in reality, it having very little scientific evidence or even proof of it working... More often arguably the opposite.
It's just a form of control for those that, don't conform to the masses.
