Even though I've been doing this for a while, I keep underestimating how much work these videos take - so apologies for the delay! More videos are on the way, and I will start a poll regarding the next video. As always, thanks for tuning in, and keep watching till the end for a déjà vu. :)
Very useful "Summary of all Ship Stats" table, this video is a valuable resource. A quick glance at the table and we conclude French Galleass and Ottoman Grand Galley will not be used in actual gameplay, they are designed far too weak - as usual.
Lol well i suppose historically the sailors would sail/row their demo ship toward an enemy ship, maybe even anchor in with hooks and ropes to the enemy ship, set the payload alight, and get in your escape boat and row to safety (still very dangerous though)
This was a great video, so many changes and fleshed out additions and it is crazy to think that this is only a foundation of what the water game will be!
Beautiful stuff, thanks. French Galleass and Ottoman Grand Galley should be better and / or more cost efficient than warship, not much worse! Devs are making UUs terrible in AoE4!!... French Galleass should take up 4 population not 5!! And Grand Galley should have 10 range instead of 9.5, 5 arrow armor, and 950hp minimum to be a Mil School!!
I like that the devs have said they're treating this as a foundation for further changes in the future, because there are still things that I would want to see added to water. Chiefly, I want to see upgrade-lines for ships, similar to land units and ships from AoE2, so that feudal ships scale better into the later ages. I get that the imperial age techs for the feudal ships are kind of approximately that idea, but imo it would read better (and also be cooler) if you had veteran and elite versions of ships as well.
I have no fucking clue about naval warfare. With the new patch and maps, I may should have. This video is increadibly helpful! But I got that right: No hard counter to galleys?
Great seeing AoM's rock-paper-scissors for ships being brought back (replacing Hammer Ships with Fire Ships, and Siege Ships with Springald Ships). Was one of the better mechanics that was left behind.
This is great and there's loads of information here, thank you! I have some feedback though. In the middle of the video when you're rattling off all the numbers and stats of each ship, it would be immensely useful to have the numbers written on screen. The AOE4World image on the left is a good start, and I'd recommend highlighting which value you're reading as you read them so I can see in addition to hear the numbers. It would help a lot with comprehension of the numbers. For the numbers you're reading that are not on the AOE4World stat card, I'd like you to print those on screen. It's really difficult to absorb after a few minutes of continuous number reading. I understand that it would require a lot of editing to print it all on screen for the viewer to follow, and that makes an already high-effort video require even more effort. I totally understand if it is too much work, but I believe it will be worth it and help these sections of the video be far more comprehensible. EDIT: So I admit, I paused in the middle of the video to make this comment, before I got to the summary section. Honestly, this summary section makes the entire few minutes of reading numbers redundant, and it's absolutely fantastic table. I would have loved to see this during the section where you were reading the numbers. It feels like listening to all those numbers was a waste of time because of this fantastic graphic you've created to summarise it all.
Hey Psymon, good to see you here again. :) I do agree with you 100%; in fact, I had to make a decision mid way through about this. I realized during recording that following the stats as a viewer was too difficult in silos, so I ended up re-recording a summary section to make it easier to understand the changes. Then that made some of the original stats recording redundant as you said, but it was now too much work to go back and re-record yet again, as I was already tens of hours in already. I bit the bullet this time, but I'll try to avoid this mistake in the future. :D
@@AgeofNoob I'm not surprised we are on the same page regarding the summary page. I believe you made the right call with the summary page, and I completely understand your hesitation to go back and fix what already took you many hours to develop. It sounds like the creation of this video was a learning experience that will improve your future videos. I'm excited to see more!
Do any of the upgrades apply to visual changes to the ships? Its not just a cool thing but I think also helps players identify the strength of a unit. Its pretty easy to identify if your opponent has upgraded their knights to imperial without even clicking on them for instance.
nice video. tbh the devs are once again dissapointing. the long announced water rework is merely a start that removes all the uniqueness. and making ships even cheaper and faster is goofy. if the game had higher fidelity, you would see the couple dozen people running around on a ship and the absurdity of it costing as much as 3 crossbows would become apparent. reminds me of how if springalds had some people pushing it around, the absurdity of old springalds outrunning infantry would have been apparent to the devs. even hypercompetitive starcraft has made sluggish and slow elite units like carriers and broodlords viable.
Also they haven't address the main issue from the beginning: no age 2 land units good at countering ships. I like the change to allow 3 ships in age 2, but why they needed to be cheaper? There were already too many ships in ship battle.
Excellent video as always! This is a very good fundation for the watergame so far. And the Waterfights are much more enjoyable (This coming from 1 that already managed to find some enjoyment from the old broken system). What I would love to see is a couple of thing from water: I am no fan of Demo-ships being the counter to broadside ships. Because they are expendable 1 time use unit. And their cost effectivness is much poorer due to this reason. Instead I'd like the Demo-ship to fullfill the role of a siege weapon more than anything. being effective at blowing up coastal buildings and taking down blobs of ships if the opponent is becoming overwhelming on water. Instead I'd like to see the role of a Boarding ships. aka Melee ship taking the role. medival naval warfare had a lot of melee combat, and galleys usually filled this role. With the Boarding ships, in the late game, I can see them also fulfilling secondary role in "capturing" opponent ships that are weakened. not only would this represent history on naval maps much better, but it will also add a much greater dynamic. Arrow ships will still be a important ship to use in the late game as they are the natural counter towards these melee ships due to their much greater mobility. The same goes for especially Demoships, as Boarding ships would technically be defensless against them. But Boarding ships would be exceptionally strong against Broadside ships, and also help turning the tide in late game naval engagement by converting ships. So in a sence, you'll end up with a much more similar dynamic to land-battles in water. But different. Where Boarding ships represent Infantry The Archer ships represent well, Ranged that counters soft low armor targets such as Boarding ships and Demo ships. Broadside ship, being more in line with Heavy-armor units that counters Archers. And Demo ships being more in line with Siege that counters Unit-mass and slow and vournarable Broadside ships. Something akin to Cavalry vs Siege, but with the twist that its vournarable to archers due to being matched in mobility and having no armor. But a big blob of archerships could still be absolutely demolished by Demo-ships if they get hit. (much like getting hit by mangonels) So you would want be aware of the Terrain in water, chokepoints and stealth "forests" on water.

Great video.....i suggest to make ram rowing ships instead to demoships.....demoships should be for imperial age (for historical reason)......i hope they make rock paper scissor without demoships.....make arrow ship->galley ship -> attack ship-> arrow ship like in Empire Earth maybe.....
Again devs ruin unique units we'll NEVER see in game... The French Galleass is TOO much WORSE than a normal warship, and the Grand Galley is EXTREMELY weak, RUINS its Military School role. Galleass should have 3 armor and take up only 4 pop slots, Grand Galley should have 900hp, 5 armor and 10 range at the very least for viability. Wasted UUs!
Cool, but I still don’t understand why they have ships that fire from the side only… yet make them turn so fast it doesn’t really make a strategic difference.

Demo Ships should add 1 food to cost, cause you know someone's got to man the ship
LOL :D That would be the cheapest human unit in the game.. My man's worth only 1 food :D
@@AgeofNoob Well the people who made it his job to ram a ship full of explosives into enemies clearly don't think he's worth much.
Lol well i suppose historically the sailors would sail/row their demo ship toward an enemy ship, maybe even anchor in with hooks and ropes to the enemy ship, set the payload alight, and get in your escape boat and row to safety (still very dangerous though)
The stats card you made are amazing
Aoe4 should implement such cards in the game to easily understand upgrades
I make almost all visuals on my videos, but the Stat cards are actually from AoE4World.com. Those guys do amazing work, you should check em out.

Agreed - this is a much better start than what the previous system was. I'm also curious to see how useful the civ unique techs will be too.

Gotta end with a bang..
Not a huge fan of hard coding the matchups instead of implementing them organically, but at least it's standardized
