    Fun fact: Turning into the wind is called tacking. Tacking was a very dangerous maneuver. Every time a ship risked doing this, they risked collapsing their masts. Most of the time, a captain would go all the way around, which was called wearing the ship.

    • @AE-wv8jd
      @AE-wv8jd 7 лет назад +4

      The_Matad0r its called a jive ya deck scrubber. Bet u cant even use a marlin spike to undo a halyard cleat. Also it didnt damage the mast, most ships of the golden age could only sail 80° to wind and frigets could manage 60° ish so upwind was a slow zig zag rather then a risk

    • @the_matad0r342
      @the_matad0r342 7 лет назад +3

      Yes, but if a ship would stall halfway through the turn, the entire sheet would be exposed to the wind. That would force all the air back against the mast, leaving a chance for the ship to be dis-masted. I will admit that my information may have not applied to that century, in which case I am mistaken. It was a thing at one point though.

    • @AE-wv8jd
      @AE-wv8jd 7 лет назад +4

      did a bit more research and that was true of the larger ships before (like 1500ish) but as the trade increased in size and more tech was available the masts were made of better wood that was hardend for longer. the risk tho was still there soo.... *grumble *grumble maby your onto something....

    I think the video is great! But personally the naval combat just bothers me. Ships have far too few crew- Santy had well over a thousand aboard. Cannons are destroyed too quickly (A '74 got reduced to twenty-two guns in like six broadsides in my latest attempt at a battle). Ships simply reef their sails if they sail any point upwind, speed is static with no sailing characteristics. Sail graphics are ludicrous, they should be quite taut not flapping around. No tacking maneuvers to go through the wind or simply increase turn rate in close quarters. I don't mean to be an over-realistic pain, but these problems seem to be mainly based upon the developers of the game making strange decisions, not the limits of the engine.

    • @MrHendrix17
      @MrHendrix17 6 лет назад +3

      Black Watch Bagpiper Barely any ships sunk or exploded in combat, most of the time they struck their colours. Santisima Trinidad struck her colors to the British twice and was purposely scuttled as she wasn't especially practical to sail. Trafalgar only saw one ship lost in actual combat.

      I think that was done for balancing and gameplay reasons. It would be needed if the fleet limit is just 2 ships or something but it is just to much to manage if you comandeer a fleet of 20 ships or something in the late game.i think the damage and crew is also this way for balancing reasons and to reduce the time naval battles take because otherwhise a single battle of many in a campaign would take at least 5h or something.

    @ioantt1754 7 лет назад +3

    Hey Apollo, not sure how realistic the gameplay of Napoleon is but one of the best ways to take out big ships of the line would of been to "rake" them which involves manoeuvring your ships to be broadside against the rear of the enemy vessel, this way the canon balls fired from your ship will travel potentially down the entire length of the ship taking out multiple canons and crew, if you exchange fire broadside to broadside at most each shot can only take 2 canons and their crew

    Sweden actually tried a 3 gun deck ship rather early on, unfortunately they didn't think to increase the height of the ship enough, thus in its maiden voyage it capsized and sunk due to wind and waves bringing water into the lowest gun deck. The ship has now been reclaimed and is in a museum.

      Not mentioning the fact that throughout whole September there practically weren't any German forces guarding the German-French border. If French would use this opportunity the war could potentially be ended by January 1940. But no, because of stupid and selfish decision (made before the war) to simply betray Poland they sentenced 50 million people to death. Jokes about their cowardice are well deserved.

    Hey Apollo, so i dont know if you will read this, but i noticed something crucial in your navy setup, and the reason why you only had 23 Guns on your 74 ships was because your ship didnt have enough crew. Have s look at the portugeise 74 rate where it has 207 men, which is enough to operate all cannons. I dont know why, but fleets have 2 versions of ships. 1 has half the crew needed to operate. The other at full capacity. You simply picked a ship with less crew when setting up your force.

    Sweden was actually a heartless faction. After the battle of Fraustadt, Sweden had an army of 3 700 foot soldiers and 5 700 men on horseback: Total 9 400men and Russia and Sachsen had an army of 19 000 soldiers and 700 men that were handling 32 cannons.
    Casualties:
    Sweden: 424 men reported K.I.A and 1 000 wounded and injured.
    Russia and Sachsen during the battle: 7 377 reported K.I.A and 7500 captured (2000 of the 7500 captured were wounded and injured) All the captives were later killed after the battle to show the Russians that we were not just messing around.
    Result: Clear Swedish victory

      7500 captured? That is almost as big as the Swedish army there. Of course they'll execute. The prisoners can overwhelm the Swedes.

    Sweden didn't really have any big battleships at the time. We only had frigates, briggs and smaller ships. We focused more on our army than the navy because we had Finland, Norway and Denmark so we could just march into Russia, Germany, and all the way down to Turkey.

    Santissima Trinidad was the only heavy first rate ship of the line constructed that served in combat she was taken as a trophy by the British after the Battle of Trafalgar sinking in a storm in route back to Britain. However she was not the only one constructed the US Navy had one I believe called the USS Pennsylvania that to prevent its fall into the confederacy's hands during the Civil War it was scuttled never seeing combat.

    Apollo I recommend looking at the defeat of the Spanish Armada if you are interested. In short terms, the much bigger Spanish fleet wanting to invade England was destroyed by the much more agile and smaller ships of the UK using really interesting tactics.

    the french retreating jokes are the best. see how pissed they got about not getting the spotlight in Dunkirk?!?!?

    • @kostakatsoulis2922
      @kostakatsoulis2922 5 лет назад

      Yeah, they were pissed! Also to go completely mate for on the French, the only reason the British were ordered to hold the Germans at Calais was because the French were whining about how the British kept retreating and had no interest in protecting French territory. Yeah, I would first worry about fixing your own army retreating on their own land before you start bitching about someone else's who's not even there because of you. No really they were primarily there because the British had a signed agreement with the Belgians.
