The drummer is incredible in this song
You need to see king gizzard and the lizard wizard, 2 drummers doing this in synchronization
That dude has some David Eric Grohl energy in this one...
You just beat me to that, only by a year
Dude is a human metronome. Fantastic live
right??
2005 19 years old me... Coming home late after a breakup... Turn on the tv... This thing hits me in the face so hard, still gives me the chills
demanoth Damn.
@demanoth. Yeah really
What is this song about? Getting old? Breaking up?
both
I get chills from this song no matter what. Perfect melody, loud guitars freaking brilliant.
University dorm - 3am - my friends and I put this on after a night at the bars and all hell erupted in the room. The lights went out, things were thrown, drinks everywhere, people jumping around going wild, a broom ended up stuck handle first in the ceiling. I don't talk to any of those guys anymore, 12 years on I don't even know what they're all up to, but that memory and this song will stick with me forever because of those few minutes.
Too many of those memories! I must have made a thousand friends for just a few hours.
Reach out to them with the memory and catch up. I’ve lost enough people to know I wish I’d kept in touch more.
“When I used to go out I’d know everyone I saw, now I go out alone, if I go out at all.”
@@bigpierreinnit4988 Sadly coincidental when you quote the lyric. Such is life now. Everyone moves on and that’s good I guess. I wonder if they’d even remember it with the same fondness. People hang on to moments that others do not.
For us it was a Dismemberment Plan tune, but I completely get it and understand.

This is without a doubt, one of the greatest songs ever recorded in the history of time.

I genuinely believe this to be my favourite song of all time
@Patrick McKenna to be asking a favour
I love the urgency, pain, anger, and sadness all wrapped up in this one song. Such a diverse span of emotions for a 4 1/2 minute song
You nailed it. Urgency. I have always gravitated to the bombast or propulsion in a song. This has frenetic urgency like no other of the era.
@@jb8280 totally agree with your statement, and just to let you know I thought what a great name for a band - Frenetic Urgency, and then I chuckled because I hate how people abbreviate modern band names like OMAM( Of Monsters and Men) etc., but their's would be FU!! Ha ha

Fucking great, isn't it?
It's ok. Now that you know it, it will never leave your side.
I’m late to it too....beautiful , don’t know how I missed it.

The drummer deserves a medal after that awesome display. Excellent song.

An essential track. Sexual frustration, ageing and screaming at the moon. Such is life
I still only howl.
I scowl at the moon,a mix of scream and howl, then it looks at me perplexed and i just smile
This is the perfect soundtrack to a drunk night out that goes down a miserable memory lane
Well put
Completely agree
I had my own band like everyone else in the early mid 2000s, when I heard this, it was so cool that I was intimidated into almost quitting. The cool factor of this NY scene was just legendary, we stood no chance, we missed the wave, amazing music.
Nevermind the wave, just do your own thing. That's what music is all about.

First time I heard this song, over 12 years ago, I though it was an energetic and furious song. Now after a recent break up and painful divorce, the lyrics makes soooooo much sense to me, that has been greatly helpful releasing my anger and make me through with a lot of sadness. Music masterpieces live longer thru ages, but some lyrics connect with real and common feelings about millions of people: pain, sadness, hopeless, inertial numbness, that songs like this are the most powerful tool to move on.

I remember listening to this song the first time.... talk about a kick in the pants. I kept wanting to get friends and relatives to listen and love this as much as I did. And while I did not have much luck I still think that one day The Rat will one day be recognized as an absolute classic of the genre.
Its one of my classics now. 15 years and I still haven't gotten enough of it.
There just needs to be a movie that features it and finally the world can appreciate it!!! They wouldn’t be OG’s like us tho!
Amen! I couldn't agree more, I feel like The Walkmen aren't as well known as they should be for how great of a band they are, I'm not even sure many people know their song "Heaven" is the theme song to the tv show How I met your mother, I was hooked the first time I heard this song ;)
@@TheProdigyAccordion lool nah they wouldn't
I remember sitting on the couch when this video first came out with my girlfriend and another couple- flipping through music videos. This video came on and all three said to change it. I couldn’t. I was hooked. I know the feeling. To this day still like the first time.

One of the greatest indie rock vocal performances. Hammy straight up kills this one
This is one of the 100 best songs of the past decade.
it's sad that not so much people know it.
This band gets no credits that it deserves. They are very underrated compared to their bunch of peers and comrades like The National. Though they have very. consistent and decent discography.
Davit beliashvili Totally agree
No, it's not. This song is almost 13 years old.
John Solo 13 years old precisely means that is from the past decade, 2000's
Nice try, but when "past decade" is used (properly), it refers to within the last ten years from that point. If you wish to refer to a specific decade you need to do that, i.e. 80s, 90, 00's. The 00s aren't any more "the past decade" than the 80s are.
But yeah, great song.

Despite my having much love for The Strokes, they have NEVER written a song that can touch this!
Your opinion
They were all part of the NY scene with the Strokes, Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs, etc. Great time for music.
@@MrShahid0072 of course it's their opinion but as much as I love the Strokes, The Walkmen has more depth. IMHO
@@Collins1118 perhaps but they don't have the tunes. Most of their songs are pretty boring and no have nothing going on when it comes to vocal melody.

Interpol bombast. The Veils level vocals. The Strokes and Arcade Fire in the audience scratching their heads. Mando Diao opening for them...this is rock & roll in its current form. I’m here for it.
Saw them live last night. Surprisingly, they played this as the third song. It was the most intense performance I’ve ever seen.
Just got out of the Asbury Park show and, yup, third song
If you're of a certain age, this one hits...hard.

It's impossible to grow tired of this song, I've tried..cannot be done. It shall remain one of the greatest ever written and performed by anyone. Not too often this kind of energy and commitment make it to a recording, and it's what every band that has a heart tries for.
Closest I have seen -- Afghan Whigs live "Debonair," -- on Conan O'Brien here on yew tewb. And also, Jawbox "Savory" on Letterman or Conan.
@@seanoneil277 Hey man, thanks for the suggestion. I'll check it out soon. I've found some really good bands thanks to suggestions like yours. Appreciate you taking the time!
@@seanoneil277 Hey man, I just listened. Very strange vocals... not what you expect to accompany the music. Original and compelling. Thanks again!!
@@robertmcmanus9185 Which one did you think had "strange" vocals?
Each of those songs is on a very good album worth listening to. Probably the best album either band ever did. Jawbox, a band from my hometown after I'd left my hometown, never saw them live. J Robbins from Jawbox later had a band called Burning Airlines, poor choice of name as the band debuted right around the time the Twin Towers were hit by airliner.
Afghan Whigs - OH origins, like Devo or Pere Ubu or The Amps / The Breeders. Dulli apparently fascinated by soul singers of the 60s and 70s, almost like a Hall & Oates gone rock. But less "Philly Soul" and more like what you hear on Debonair.
One internet resource you can use to find new music -- these days it's really a CF with so many ads, but they have album and band reviews, and for each artist or band there is a tab called "Related" and one called "Similar Artist" or "Similar Album." The website is allmusic dot com. Back in the early-mid 00s I found quite a few interesting bands through those similar or related tab lists.
If this song doesn't make you want to scream the words from the top of your lungs then you need to sit down with someone and evaluate where your live has been going for the last few years.

I think the context of the song, is a man being dumped by his girlfriend (possibly for cheating on her - hence the "rat" name), and being ostracized by their social circle. Which happens - people choose sides. That's always been my take, anyway.
I think he's basically berating his ex, for ruining his life.

This song is the anti-Just Like Heaven by the Cure; instead of being a romantic lovesick letter to a supposed dead lover, The Rat is about the harrowing emotional anguish of heartbreak to someone who's still out there, alive and beating, with a different partner, leaving you in the dust for the rest of time.
