Are We Finally Fed Up With Colored Vinyl Record Variants?

  • In this video, I take on the controversial comments made by Billie Eilish regarding vinyl record variants. Are we pressing too many records? Do we need to stop pressing vinyl variants? I discuss the good and the bad when it comes to colored vinyl and the special vinyl variants that are taking over our pressing plants and for some of us - our collections.
In this video, I discus records from artists/bands such as Taylor Swift, Paul McCartney, Billie Eilish, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Fleetwood Mac, Black Sabbath and more.

I’m 58 and I LOVE splatter vinyl! But, my favorite vinyl collecting moments are when I add a new old album to my collection that is plain black vinyl but when I hold it up to a bright light I see that it’s a different translucent color. I have several of these that aren’t mentioned on Discogs. A lot of EMW pressings are like this, but there are lots of others out there that aren’t known unless you hold it up to a light. That is now part of my ritual when adding an lp to my collection. I’ve been surprised so many times and it’s awesome when I find a translucent pressing! Love your channel and content, Melinda!

I love Billie, but Miss Eilish might want to have a chat with her record label before speaking on the matter of overproducing vinyl variants. Her debut album has 20 variants, as well as a 7” box set where every song was pressed on a separate 7” single. To make matters worse, THREE more variants for that album were announced for preorder just this past month (an eco swirly blue one with a glow in the dark cover through Interscope Vinyl Collective, a picture disc and an opaque bright orange variant). 😅
Also, her second and most recent album had 8 variants. People say “but those were all recycled vinyl!” No. Only 1 was eco-vinyl. The other 7 variants were brand new virgin vinyl.
Also, both of these albums and all their variants had bundles with other merch items, CDs, stickers, hats, etc. She also collaborated with GUCCI to create a custom $80 cardboard box for yet another vinyl variant for her second album. Something tells me Gucci isn’t exactly “sustainable”…
I love the woman, but again, I’m just sayin’ - she should probably get her own house in order before speaking about anyone else’s.

I believe Ms. Eilish is fully aware of all that. I think she is speaking to the industry rather than other artists, putting herself on the line, which if that is indeed the case gives her good street cred, I'll say that. Like I said, a lot of the time variants are made without the artist's knowledge until after the fact. The artist doesn't get paid much of at all at times from said variants.
For the record, I don't know who she is beyond her name. I'm not familiar with her music or anything and it likely is not my cup of tea, but still...

@@ericelliott227- lmao, you don’t think Billie Eilish racks in $$$$ from her album sales and merch??? Well you’re right about one thing, you clearly have no clue who she is (she is among the A-list of pop singers and just won a Grammy and Oscar for one of her songs - which was featured in the summer blockbuster Barbie movie)

    • @ericelliott227
      @ericelliott227 4 месяца назад +1

@@mpi5850 I just happen to used to be in the industry, so yes, I do know how it works, which also means I don't have to personally know or be familiar with a specific artist. I have never heard her. I'm not into today's pop anyway. That doesn't mean she is not any good nor does it mean she isn't. That is irrelevant.
I'll tell you this, artists of any caliber get paid pennies for each "unit" sold and a "unit" is 100 to 1000 records. "Sold" means orders from distributors. There are many hands that get greased before the artist sees any money for record sales. The only way an artist makes more money from record sales is by direct sales, which means you or I or anyone else goes directly to the artist to purchase their records. Of course, that is not going to happen with big name artists.
Where artists make real money is in concert tickets and merch. Record sales tend to go towards paying off advances from the label. It costs a king's fortune to make a traditional album unless one does it at home. Even if the artist does their own mixdown then the recording needs to get sent to mastering, which costs a fortune by itself. That said home studios do not generally have the ability to do traditional recordings DIY all the way through unless the artist is also a Producer, recording engineer and mastering engineer all in one.
Grammy's, Oscars and such do not always translate to more earnings except for the artist feeling they can charge more for concerts, interviews, etc. However, that is usually a career killer. That is why some say that winning a Grammy is the start of a downhill run for a career.
To me it sounds like she has no control over what the label does, which is the case for 99% of artists. She likely doesn't know half the stuff until after the fact and I have actually seen that in person before with other artists. Some fan will bring some item, be it a record or something else that the label put out or something to a meet and greet or something and the artist will have never seen it before.
So it sounds to me like Ms. Eilish is speaking out against the long tradition of grifting and other nasty practices in her own industry, possibly putting herself at risk, that says something. If she is found to be doing this hypocritically, it will end her career in minutes. So far, those who are claiming that have no evidence. If there is evidence to it, then it will come out eventually and then we can all pile up on her and stone her to death or something if one wants.

Excellent, informative video as always, Melinda!
I think the problem, if there is one, isn’t so much colored vinyl as the baffling array of reissues and alternative releases, as well as and the industry’s constant efforts to repackage old releases and get consumers to rebuy albums they already have.
I will always seek out original or older versions of classic releases if available and affordable. As for new releases, I generally stick to black but occasionally splurge on color, especially splatter vinyl, which are works of art in themselves.
This type of marketing consumerism isn’t limited to vinyl, of course.

Hey Melinda. I too prefer black so to see dust scratches and stuff, Easier to clean as many have said that. I don't own too many colored vinyls. Getting records as original is great as to come by when you see them. The music is where I need to decide what I need to have whether on vinyl cd or even cassette. And re issues are great to have of stuff and I like that as well. Affordability to one's budget as well. And as to space and running out of room. CDs on the other hand I can weigh in to add as time roles along these days. And as to what format to have the record that I get. Colored vinyl variants always have an appeal to alot of folks/ So whatever one gets into is all fine indeed. The last of colored vinyl I had got was the Cheap Trick In Another World album. Take care.

In Clinton Heylan's book, Bootleg: The Secret History of the Other Recording Industry, a man known as Dub (the man behind the first editions of Bob Dylan's Great White Wonder, Led Zeppelin's Live on Blueberry Hill, The Rolling Stones' Live'r Than Youu'll Ever Be, and many others under the label Trade Mark of Quality) told about how he learned that pressing plants were known to just sweep up the vinyl trimmings left on the floor after the pressing process and dump them, dust and all into the black vinyl hoppers, which caused some pressings to be rife with surface noise. Since bootlegs were pressed in smaller quantities, one of the plant managers told him of all these other colors of vinyl that no one used because of a five cent per record mark up, meant that colored vinyl was actually virgin vinyl, which would sound much cleaner than any black vinyl pressing. After he learned that, Dub had all TMOQ records pressed on colored vinyl to reduce any additional sound deterioration of releases sourced from already sketchy sources.
The current run of colored vinyl in the last few years are strictly for novelty and aesthetics. Since most people buying records aren't even playing them, they look cool when they're mounted and framed, hanging on the wall. I don't believe they have the superior sound they had in those early days, as a result. I'm just glad I'm not a completest to the degree of needing all 150 variants of Master of Reality (I currently have two, which is one more than I need). The practices of record pressing plants haven't changed much in the 75 years of manufacturing vinyl records, so now the colored variants offer no superior sound quality to black, anymore.

If it's recycled vinyl it should be 50% cheaper - we had that problem during the 70s and 80s and I remember purchasing cassettes because they sounded better than the recycled vinyl new releases of the day - another problem was records that ran more than 45 minutes sounding tinny - groups like Genesis, The Doors and many Beatles compilations pushing the needle for 27 minutes per side and sounding terrible with bass guitars reduced in sonic quality - I'm glad you addressed this whole Billie Eilish/Taylor Swift debacle - it shows how this new generation will shade without second thoughts - As far as McCartney the last LP I bought of his was "Drivin' Rain" a great LP but he lost his voice and I would rather buy something else - Another great video Melinda❤- see you next week!

Personally, I have never bought a record because of the colour of the vinyl, consequently have very few records that aren't black. Apparently, many vinyl records are bought by people who don't have any means to play them, so presumably, for them, the coloured vinyl is something attractive that they can put on display? After I mentioned this to you on a post last week then it’s great to see you follow up with a post feature. In most cases it’s nothing to do with the artists, they don’t generally have any influence on the way albums are released. This trend of multiple pressings of colour vinyl variations, a picture disc, standard black vinyl and then the Deluxe box set version is purely the label’s exploitation of the renewed interest in vinyl. The main issue here is the fact that these releases are getting snatched up quickly by many record traders and dropped on to the secondary collectors market at hugely inflated prices, a number of the online trading sites are littered with these releases and those of the Record Store Day releases too. What all this has created is that in many cases the interested vinyl collector is getting taken advantage of twice over. The only way this industry trend will stop is if those over keen collectors stop buying multiple variant copies of the same album and thus making it uneconomical for the labels. Take the Sabbath recent releases as an example, all have been repressed so many times over the years since the original releases, had anniversary issues released then the Ozzy era box set a few years ago and more recently RecordStore colour vinyl pressings and even more recently the Picture disc Box Set - Tell me people, Am I Going Insane!

Hi Melinda. I think that some coloured variants are really cool and it is nice to change it up on occasion. But as you showed multiple copies of albums you have in different variants highlights why the labels do it: For the Money! People who already have a copy on black vinyl are buying a second or third copy of something they already have and the labels know that. If we stopped buying these coloured variants, it would take some time for the labels to change this practice, but it would change.
Recently I have pre-ordered a few albums that give an option of black or a variant, and at times I choose one or the other but never both. All I really need is one copy that plays well in the end. Cheers

part of the reason for colored vinyl (in the modern era) has to do with the beginning of record store day back in 2008. when classic and mainly out of print records were being repressed, colored vinyl was a way to differentiate them from the original pressings so resellers can't claim them as "originals" (same with counterfeits but that's a different topic all together) thru the years as record store day grew and records sales started booming, record companies started offering variants because they know they will sell thus they are making more money.

I have to agree with you--let the vinyl lovers buy what they want. 👍 Those of us who don't want to buy the extra versions vote with our wallets and stick with only one or, if we want a specific color of a new release (such as indie record store exclusives), sometimes we'll pay the extra dollar or two for the color we want.
I've had noise issues with a few non-black vinyl releases that had background noise issues (Donald Fagen's "Sunken Condos," J&K's "Stonebone," and a handful of others) but otherwise, modern colored vinyl is better than it was in the 70s and 80s, as I found they scratched really easy. (At least I have the SugarCube so I can play them now.) There have also been some vinyl releases where the only version is colored vinyl, like the two I mentioned above, and the new Rachel Z album "Sensual" (it's excellent!) is on blue vinyl which fortunately is a very nice pressing.
Unfortunately the idea of multiple releases originated in the CD era, where retailers often had their own exclusive versions. One year, I saw that Brian Setzer had store-exclusives for his first Xmas CD with the Brian Setzer Orchestra...only, each retailer had a separate, different bonus track. Really?? Turns out that in Japan, he released "Luck Be a Lady" as a CD single...and those retailer exclusive tracks were also on that CD. Guess which one I bought? 😉
P.S. Are you heading to AXPONA? Heard their record "marketplace" is quite a bit larger this year. I've told others I need intervention so I don't buy too many rekkids. 😁

I agree. Let people have their vinyl. If it doesn't sell, they will stop pressing so much. Colored vinyl is very nice these days and sounds as good as a classic black version in most cases.

I think this new generation of collectors want the variants. It adds to the thrill of the hunt for some and it’s a rabbit hole you can go down if you choose too. Kind of like a choose your own adventure type of collecting. If people keep wanting to buy they should keep pressing. Record buyers will dictate how long this goes on.

Hi Melinda. I don’t really care about color variants, especially if there is a black vinyl choice. Color variants are hit and miss. I have a few that sound fantastic and a couple that sounded like dirt. I stay away from them when possible, because it’s always a risk and records are Not cheap! I Did give in and buy that Black Sabbath Vinyl Me Please from a Discogs flipper but they were selling it for less than others and it was sealed. Pretty amazing pressing I love it. Don’t care about the color, Only the sound. Thanks for another great morning coffee video 😊.

I have been a record collector since I was in grade school. I like both black and colored vinyl records. I even have a small number of records that have pictures on them and I like those as well. Though, the down side of colored records and even the records with pictures on them don't play well on lower price record players or cheaper Turntables. My colored records and those with pictures on them play just fine on my vintage Realistic Lab 420 Turntable. The sound quality is fine on both colored records and records with pictures. I really like the ideia of variants, different colors and different cover art, so you can choose wich one you think matches the songs and the album energy
Just got that latest Lana Del Rey album on the explicit alternative cover, also the latest of Billie Eilish in brown vinyl, I love that I have my favorite combination of variants in my collection
The problem to me is when they put like 15 variants with random colors just as a cash grab, or lile a new variant every month so you cant really choose because of FOMO
Variants should be special, not just a money maker tactic

I know McCartney took some heat from fans for the latest colored variants of III. I didn't feel the need to order them, as I have one black vinyl and one Target green, which I believe is still easily acquired.

But the vinyl recicle has begun, in my country the vinyl are still virgin material but in a lesser gramage (under 120 to 140) rigth now. But im afraid is becose the vinyl is a expensive material and the producción rigth now is on full demand (Adele and AbbA are example of that). I love colored variants - I do think some bands go way over board with this - I think there should be a Black Version, A Main Color for the label, an indie color (mass variant) and then Specific Shop variants that are less then a couple hundred. This is how a lot of smaller indie labels I collect handle it. The large LARGE artists like TS or the Beatles - they do not need to make 30 variants of one record....2/3 to make it exclusive is cool but other than that it is kind of crazy. I prefer translucent color vs. opaque - it seems the opaque ones have more issues.

    Aloha Melinda,
    Great Subject matter.
I'm old school as far as collecting. That being said, I know independent record shops, will order a limited supply in a different color Variant, exclusive for there store to get sales. Same with Wal-Mart, Target & so on. To me this is where the independent stores have a chance to compete if they have a different limited Color variant.
Not only am I a collector of vinyl from the early 70s and late 60s, but i also listen to mine, whereas i heard there are people who buy the color variants and don't even play It. Some don't even have a turntable, and this helps the market.
As far as sales for the independent record stores to stay afloat., But again in due time they will get tired of it and sell it back to the stores. Which i've seen happand even my friends who work in record shops have told me it happens a lot all the time.
    Again

Doesn't matter how much you play it, like you said , it depends on the equipment and whether you have a good cartridge tracking "properly" ! And you should wait 20 hours before you "replay" them, it gives time for the grooves to "bounce back" and "reshape themselves" back to their original shape! It's the "plasticizers" that do that! We didn't know back then to even clean our records let alone...... A lot of folks played them on changers that played a side automatically over and over all night! We know better now since they've become treasures!

Hi Melinda- I enjoy your videos and especially this one. I got hooked on colored vinyl especially with my favorite classic rock albums from the 60's and 70's. I really got hooked on Beatles colored vinyl. My first two colored vinyl records I bought in the 70's were the Beatles White Album (French copy-1978), Abbey Road (British copy, 1979), and the German DMM Blue, 1980's--'67-'70). They all sound good especially the Abbey Road copy. I also have some Beatles picture discs (do a video on them :) along with the Doors G/H (white), Doobie Brothers G/H (light blue), Rolling Stones live "ya ya" album (grey), and others. However, like you enough is enough too much $$ and a little excessive. I also feel the quality control in record stamping plants may not be as good as it was in the vinyl heyday of the 60's-70's prior to CD's. I've had my share of new warped and dirty vinyl recently . . . . . Thanks for reading my random thoughts on this subject. I'm very impressed with your vinyl collection and the organizational methods you use with your LP's from your earlier videos . . . .I've learned some new things from you with this hobby. I've been collecting since the late '70's. Thanks! ...........LP/CD Dan from Indiana.

There are so many albums on my want list, that are virtually unavailable. I’d be much happier if more time and effort were spent on bringing back reissues of rare and popular music albums. Blondie - Parallel Lines, McCoy Tyner - Soliloquy, Sade - Diamond Life, Emmylou Harris - At the Roman, just to name a few. Once again, you nailed it with your presentation! No one ever mentions my main complaint about colored vinyl: the banding is often difficult to see. Of course, this comes into play when you only want to hear a song that may be the 3rd of 4th song on an album side. Sometimes I have to adjust the lighting above my turntable, or move my head side to side to adjust my field of vision to see that 3rd song banding.

Hi Melinda. I think this is an interesting topic that sometimes does need to be talked about. I have absolutely no problems with coloured vinyl, I own many coloured vinyl albums even splatter vinyl and I love them. They are so cool especially my Slade reissues on coloured splattered vinyl. But I think when an artist puts out an album on about 8 to 10 different colours it comes to a point where you just have to say enough is enough. When you consider the cost of new vinyl to buy these days I just can't imagine buying the same album on lots of different colours very practical to be honest, but that's not me knocking collectors who want to have all the different variants of a particular album. Each to their own I guess but that's just not for me. I couldn't afford to do that for starters anyway. On the subject of metallic gold and silver vinyl I totally agree with you Melinda. I have a few gold coloured albums in my collection and they do have some clicks and pops that no amount of cleaning can seem to get rid of. My silver metallic pressing of T.Rex The Slider album sounds terrible in places. I get that when an album is celebrating something like a 50 year anniversary it might seem a great idea to press it on gold or silver vinyl and to look at they are so cool, but they just don't sound good so maybe it's not such a good idea after all. All the best Melinda. Take care.

I’m glad you showed the VMP Fleetwood Mac album. I have it, yes it sounds amazing. A few years ago Rhino put out a box set, 1975-1987, of the Fleetwood Mac albums in colored vinyl. They don’t sound spectacular. This VMP though does, and it looks so much cooler in person than in pictures, or on video. VMP has come a long way, they release a lot of exclusives, not just color, although the majority of their releases are on colored vinyl, but they do a lot of reissues of albums that have either been out of print for years or have never been on vinyl. Last years Vinyl Me Parton series they did is an example. An album a month for a year, some were new to vinyl, some were reissued for the first time in decades. Where they fall short sometimes though is the artwork. The Dolly albums sound amazing, but the artwork looks cheap. In some cases they omitted all liner notes. Not good.
However, they do put out great stuff, the recent reissue of Heart’s “Little Queen” is another outstanding listen. “Barracuda” kicks you right in the face! The vinyl looks cool too.
This spring there will be another batch of store exclusives of the 1970’s Fleetwood Mac albums, the White Album, Rumours, and Tusk are all getting color variant exclusives at various stores. No need for these at all.
So for me, in a case like VMP, where they are doing unique exclusives, it’s fine. In a case of reissues on your choice of 14 different colors, that needs to stop.

Good rap on Colored vinyl. Black vinyl is also colored vinyl. I am excited about the new John Lennon Mind Games glow in the dark vinyl. But I hear that the sound has been compromised. I definitely have no experience on this matter, but just to say, that I think the Fad of doing these schemes bleed the consumer like a gambling casino. You could be richly rewarded in your vinyl investment, but it may come back to bite you. The McCartney I album, I also have in various forms, too, Melinda.
