  • In this video, we discuss things we usually refuse to talk about. You asked the questions and I tell you the truth. Should record stores sell "counterfeit" records? How much money do I make per video on RUclips? I also let you in on what's going on in my life. Big changes are coming.

As an only child myself, ive stuck around where my mom lives to keep an eye on her, and to be able to spend time with her in her retirement years. I commend you for being close to your daughter. You cant get back lost years. Time is our most precious asset, next to family. You must maximize BOTH. Cheers and dont feel bad. Being close to your only child is NEVER the wrong decision.

Hi, Melinda. Don't worry, you're not leaving anything or anyone behind you. You are merely taking them with you. They are in your heart for ever. No moving, however far, can change that:) What's more, you are also doing that for a wonderful reason: your daughter. Your parents would certainly tell you a big YES on this one:) Anyway, take care and bless you and your fantastic family:)

Native Floridian here. Grew up on the beach, but now live inland. Hurricanes, not if, but when, will become a part of your life. While damages can be similar to that of a tornado, a 🌀 is a 24 hour weather event. Listen to locals and prepare. Take nothing for granted. Not as inexpensive as it once was, but Florida is still a beautiful place to live. Good luck!

So very exciting about the new chapter in your life. I wish you all the best. I recently had a conversation with a woman in the line outside of record store day. She was new to our area and she was in line with a list for her husband who was the collector. They downsized to a smaller home and she said that her husband insisted the boxes of lps were the last one to go into the moving van and the first ones to be unloaded and unpacked! They have about 3,000 lps. I imagine your situation will be similar!

My in-laws were transferred from Columbus to Orlando in 1997. My wife got pregnant with our first in 98. In 2002 we followed them to Florida to get the grandkids next to their grandparents. We didn't know anyone other than my in-laws but family is paramount. I won the lottery with my MIL and FIL and having them 10 minutes away for 20 years was soooo worth it. If your daughter starts a family it's beyond wonderful to have all three generations together. That said, 20 years in Florida was enough for us. We loved Sanford and when the kids were little the beach was heaven. But we had to get out of the furnace and traffic. We moved to the Asheville area in 22 and my in-laws followed us last fall. Being from Kentucky you're used to backyard tomatoes that taste like heaven and real sweet corn. Those aren't in Florida but if you're a fan of seafood it's a game changer. I would recommend a very good power conditioner/surge protection for there. It's the lightning strike capital of the world and the grid fluctuates all the time. If you're going to be on the gulf side then buy a small boat. It's worth it over there. If you're on the Atlantic side not so much. You need a much bigger boat to be comfortable and safe. And while I don't miss much about there, they do have the best liquor laws so the selection in stores is outstanding! And cheap.

@@MelindaMurphy gators are fine as long as you don't walk your dog near fresh water where they live. Folks ignore the gator signs and end up running from gators trying to eat their pooch. Snakes are everywhere. You just get used to it. It was the spiders that took the longest for me. Florida has a ton of spiders. And roaches. Florida roaches fly FYI.

@Melinda Murphy A bootleg recording is an audio recording on vinyl (or CD) of a performance not officially released by an artist. Bootlegs actually are part of an artists legacy. Springsteen would not had been this big without bootlegs. He even acknowledged bootleggers during his shows. He even shouted “bootleggers roll your tapes” when he played a rarity or unreleased song back in the 70’s.
A counterfeit is an album that is a fraudulent imitation (a forgery) of a officially released album. They are often of inferior quality in both audio and design.
I collect bootlegs for over 40 years now. Bought my first one aged 12 and since then I am hooked hearing rare concert performances of my favourite bands and artists I else would never had heard and that made me appreciate them and their music even more.
On the other hand I despise counterfeits. If I want a out of print record I buy the cd or shell out the bucks for an original.

Hey Melinda, wow that is HUGE news. Congratulations to your daughter. 🎉I totally understand why you're making the move to be close to her. Be prepared for the huge moving job ahead of you. I can tell you, as a collector that has moved his large record collection a few times over the years, that its actually easier than you think. Its not a fiddly packing job. The only drawback is the volume involved. However I'd rather pack records and CD's than glassware etc. Now that's a tedious job lol. 😉
Bootlegs & pirate/counterfeit records are a fact of life. I draw the line at counterfeit/fake items of official releases, such as the much pirated Beatles 2009 Remaster stereo & mono CD boxes. Those are bad. However because of the open public domain copyright rules in Europe, some relatively inexpensive vinyl has surfaced. I have bought EU coloured vinyl pressings of Bill Evans & Chet Baker albums. These are on the DOL & Waxtime / Wax In Colour imprints and they sound ok to my ears. Not sure if I'll get more though. I know they kind of get frowned upon by the vinyl community. But it's a personal choice. I have the odd bootleg record or CD including a lavishly packaged 9CD boxed set of The Beatles "Complete BBC Recordings". The recording quality varies from quite good to very dodgy. It is what it is. Good luck again. I sent you a PM earlier. Happy to help of you need some advice regarding packing records. Have fun 😊😊. Love your work as always. Take care & Best Wishes to yourself Melinda & Phil and your beautiful daughter. Cheers 😘❤️

Hello Melinda. I saw your video a couple of days ago and wanted to say congratulations! I bet y'all are proud parents of your daughter for sure 👍👍
Sounds like you're excited to be moving to Florida too. I know it's hard leaving your hometown but it can also be a great experience as you start somewhere new. I still have my memories that go with much of my music bound to where I grew up and thought I would wind up moving back to. But life had its own plans and I'm happy where I'm at.
I'm sure I'm not bringing up anything you haven't already thought of or new here, but in case... Watch out for the sand if you're living close to the beach. That stuff finds its way into every crack and crevice around I learned growing up and going down to Galveston all of the time. I literally used to have to take apart some of my radio gear and vacuum and clean it out if I had it in my truck when going to the beach. And hopefully you won't ever have to worry about this. But if you're able, hopefully you can have some good protection for your vinyl records if something like a hurricane or flood from a hurricane's storm surge should come. I've never really thought about owning records and living near a beach but many people do it. So I'm sure they have ways of keeping records clean and safe and maybe even waterproof too? I remember hearing you talk about a record store or two that you liked in Florida in one of your older videos. I don't know if Florida record stores have any protection in place for those kind of events or the sand? But I bet they probably have heard it all and would know what might work the best.
And on the bootleg topic, I've been a huge collector of mainly live shows, unreleased outtakes or demos, and things like that since I was in my mid-20s or so. I've got A number of recordings on vinyl but unfortunately most of it is either on CD or it is lossless audio files. I think I've likely bought a few of the bootleg studio releases that were trying to make an item look official and real in recent years on vinyl. In fact I'm sure I have. But I didn't know it at the time. There's a lot of stuff that I wished would be reissued or repressed today. And there are definitely some albums I know I'd try out even if it was an unofficial copy. I've seen some interesting videos on the topic showing how everything as far as the text goes on the cover looks right but things like the color is off (or some other small detail) indicating it's not an official pressing. The kind of stuff I enjoy more though is the great soundboard, or even audience, recordings of concerts from the '60s through '80s that are really good sounding. It's a lot of fun collecting the music you love and there are some real gems out there both officially released and unofficially released :-)
Again, congratulations to you and your husband as well as your daughter on her graduation! And I hope you have a smooth move and enjoy the new city and home!
    Brian in Fort Worth 🎶

Thank you so much for the kind words and advice. The record stores near the coast have the hurricane drill down pat. One of the records stores did get flood damage one time but all of their records were lifted high off the ground. They did have to replace their floor. I'm going to be close to the beach but not directly on the beach so hopefully it won't be a huge problem. Thank you and take care. ❤️🤗

I've had almost a mirror image of your situation. I grew up in Florida and spent my first five decades there. About 14 years ago my wife and I moved to Tennessee so we could be closer to grown kids and grandchildren, and what a long strange trip it's been. I can't say it has always been easy but the rewards have been great too. Best of luck Melinda!

Moved to the west coast 3 years ago after 50 years in Edmonton. My 3 adult boys, from 2 marriages have since disowned me and we are now estranged. But on the upside the weather is phenomenal and I'm enjoying the time I have left. Could be better, could be worse? I envy your family. Take your time moving, lots of breaks and it's always fun unpacking when you find the sugar in with the kids toys. All the best.

Melinda, Thank you for the Video and your huge announcement. First of all congratulations to Doctor Murphy. That’s brilliant. Your announcement is a WOW!!! That’s one huge step. Nice that you’ll have a music room though!! I hope the move goes well as it’s a pretty stressful episode in your life. Make sure you pack and protect your wonderful Vinyl collection!!
To my knowledge I haven’t purchased bootleg copies.
Last week I visited my Indy Record Store again. I came away with the following: “Live at Bubba”s” Ahmed Jamal, “The Boy” Mark Knopfler, “Groovy” Red Garland Trio, “Psycho Daisies” The Yardbirds, “Live in Europe 1964 Howlin’ Wolf. “Live at Racket” Rolling Stones. Some of these were left over from RSD which I am well pleased about.
Good luck once more to your new episode in your life. I’ve moved a couple of times. Latest move was about 15 years ago. My marriage finally crashed and died. I moved right away from London to where I live now 50 odd miles South. I was glad to move basically . Had to get away. Much different circumstances to your moving reasons. I don’t regret my decision. Good luck for your future. Regards Dave.

I didn't think RUclips paid much for these videos, so am not surprised at your comments. It always seemed to me you were in it for the fun, the joy of music, and of vinyl in particular. It was a bit of a surprise to hear that some people make a living off RUclips videos (no vinyl channels, I think). I subscribe to only two other vinyl channels besides yours, and the one thing you all have in common is that the channels are small enough to have a personal, interactive feel to them. That's a plus, I think.
As for the move to Florida, I can relate to some degree. I was the first in my family to go away to college and, being young and not too sentimental, saw it as a challenge, a new adventure. I am from Nashville, but went to New Hampshire for college. Didn't know anyone, no safety net; I HAD to succeed. I graduated and went back home for about a year and a half, then off to NYC for graduate school. Same scenario, but elevated because this is NY. Unlike New Hamsphire, this was more of a struggle to adjust. All kinds of stuff happened here, I had to deal with most of it by myself, but I'm still standing by God's grace. You will too. And you'll have your daughter nearby; you're both into vinyl; and best of all . . . free checkups!😁 I would say her presence makes it not a total start-over. And the fact that you're moving with your husband is important; you won't have to do it alone. I'd say you'll be just fine. What I hope to see is the new music room once it's up and running.

I moved two years ago, but just across town. It was the first time I had to move a record collection as I had only started collecting vinyl in 2015. I think I packed about 30 records per box (so they wouldn't be too heavy), and padded them on all sides with wadded up newspaper. I must have had 20-25 boxes like that. Plus, about 15 GPO cases full of 12" singles. And I wouldn't let the movers we hired touch any of my vinyl. Anyway, I'd love to see you make a video that shows your method of packing and moving your vinyl collection. Best of luck in Florida!

I have bought a few unofficial vinyl albums, but not by choice. I have bought a lot of vinyl off of eBay and some from overseas. There is a couple that I thought were official releases because they looked like the real thing. It has made me want to do more research before I buy and maybe even buy more from record stores. So I’m not a fan of counterfeit vinyl and will try to avoid them. My music collection isn’t just vinyl, I have just as many CD’s and for convenience listen to streaming on Apple Music. I appreciate that you shared with us about how much you make from RUclips and the perks that you receive from promotional vinyl. I do like that it keeps your husband Phil’s blood pressure down. We definitely don’t want our hobbies to cause illness to our loved ones. I also feel the same way in that RUclips shouldn’t make all the profit from your content. But the only reason that I want your channel is because you’re sharing a passion of yours that I feel provides enrichment to my life. Vinyl collecting is a community and your channel is part of it. Revealing that you are moving to Florida to stay close to your daughter, just tells me that you’re family oriented. I love that and understand. My son graduated college last year and we were fortunate that he didn’t have to or want to move away. He’s very family oriented and wanted to stay close to family. But I’m pretty sure that if he would have moved far away my wife would have wanted to move. If you miss a show one week or it comes out on a different day or schedule, we’ll know it’s for a good reason, after all I don’t always watch your show on the same day it’s released. On the bright side, more record stores to explore down there. Take care bye, Phil

Hi Melinda, I moved in 2016 from Germany to the USA as an permanent Resident (Greencard Holder) after retirement as an officer of law enforcement. Activated in October 2014, now the first ten year are over. And now I am going for my second term and after getting that I’ll be running for Dual Citizenship - I served for my country and on the other hand I love to live in the USA, especially in Arkansas - I love it here in the Northwest in the National forest. I never regretted the move, but my friends overseas I am still missing and my hometown soccer club. But at the end, in 2019 starting with Covid19 I built up a new home and found the way to Discogs and a way to communicate over vinyls with new friends. I love to collect, and now at the age of 63 I think that music was ever a part of my live, and it will be forever. So, your move to Florida is a big thing and I hope that you feel comfortable with everything there. I have a lot of friends in the Jacksonville area and know they moved from Georgia and feel home there now. So, congratulations to you and your family!

Hi Melinda: I am a only child also and I understand why you would want to move to be closer to her. It is very common for people to move to a different house/place. You are doing it for a very good reason. I moved here 59 years ago when I was 4 years old. When my Mom passed, my Dad moved to Florida just for the winter months and I did not blame him at all. We were very tight and I doubt there was a Father and son in the whole world that was as close and tight as we were, I can just imagine how hard that must be to move from somewhere you lived your whole life. I doubt I could do that, but it is not like you will be alone, your family will be there, some of your family. But I am sure leaving Kentucky will be difficult. Congratulations on the new REAL music room. That is exciting. Thanks for sharing, Melinda. Keep us posted. And I love your channel and thanks for sharing so much of yourself with us.

In relation to Vinyl "bootlegs"...I'm happy for them to be offered by the record companies...the choice is always up to the Buyer, as long as we are made aware of any "sound quality issues" up front! (either on the Hype Sticker, or the descriptive synopsis). 👍🙂

I remember moving away from Malibu where I was born and raised in paradise, but my dad was transferred to the home office in Ohio. Quite a shock for me at a young age. But that is so nice that you are following your daughter to Florida and congrats on her graduating from medical school. I now have moved to Thousand Oaks, California only 20 minutes from the beaches of Malibu that I grew up on.

I am originally from England and moved to California with my wife who is from California way back in 1986 when i was 21.
It was quite a scary, but also a exciting new chapter of my life. Now here i am i 2024 nearing 60 with 4 grown up daughters ( 2 who are doctors) and i have had a fantastic life here with a fantastic wife and so glad i made the move all those years ago.
So Melinda i wish you and your husband all the best as you set on a new adventure.
Though i do not envy you of having the task of packing up all those records.

Wow!!! What a year 2024 is for you and your family. Congratulations to your daughter, i hope her career will be all she could wish for. Melinda, i was born, went to school, worked and lived in the same area for the first 40 years of my life. I met my partner and moved 30 miles away (not quite the same as moving to another state, granted) but, i have to say, we fell in love with the home we bought just by the first picture we saw of it and have never regretted moving "near the sea" which was always a dream. Leaving family and all that i had known was difficult, so i do totally understand. One sentence i was told a few years ago which has helped me in times of upset " YOU ARE WHERE YOU ARE MEANT TO BE" ..... give yourself time and allow yourself to get used to what may feel like loss but given that time your life will move in different ways and i'm sure with the comfort of your husband and your daughter near by things will gradually feel normal. Ive always found walking on the seashore levels me out so you make sure you embrass that experience as often as you can. Things will definately work out well for you Melinda because "good things happen to good people" thank you Melinda for your honesty and for sharing such personal news. All the best to you and your family, God Bless. FLOSS.

Hello Melinda, I’m from Florida I lived there for 35 years and it’s a great state to raise a family in but I can understand your feeling towards not wanting to leave your home state. I believe Steve Carlson just moved from Michigan to Denver to be closer to his first grandson. Just think of this way NO SNOW to drive in or shovel it’s a great adventure maybe you will have a record store in your home town. Good luck on your new journey I hope you will give us a tour of your new house!

    Hi Melinda,
Thanks for sharing also more personal sides of your life. I hope you'll be lucky in your new home in Florida.
As I recall you were very close with your mother, so I fully understand that you'll like to live not to far from your own daughter (and son-in-law - and grandchildren ❤ when time comes - they are fantastic!).
One of our "kids" (+30 w. wife + 2 grandchildren) lives 3 hours travel away - the two others nearby. But despite the distance we see and have just as much contact w. them: When we visit each other, the stay lasts longer (a number of days) and we have more of a "family-living-together"-feeling (cooking, playing, doing "things", grandchildren waking us up 🥰) than "just" visiting for some hours. Together w. videos, face-time calls it works well.
So we never considered moving closer. Not only because of the two other "kids" (+ one more grandchild) but mainly because we'll like to live close to all our friends here in Copenhagen, who we wouldn't see much of if we had to travel 2 x 3 hours each time. Having and seeing friends becomes more and more important as we get older (+/- 60) and our children establish themselves in their own, new ways of living.
I hope everything will work in the best way for all of you 👍

      @MelindaMurphy  4 месяца назад

What you are saying makes perfect sense. If we had other children, things would probably be different. We will not be in the same city so we will probably have the kind of quality time you are talking about. They will come and stay with us on weekends. Thank you and take care. ❤️🤗

We're visiting friends right now and this was my first video of the day. Hello from beautiful Palm Springs. Golf course capitol of the world.😎
    It's just like Florida, except it's a "dry" heat.🤣
Your cracking me up, because a lot of our friends are buying places in Florida, but as snow birds. The grandbabies are still here.
BTW, we moved to Taylor county 13 years ago from Seattle. Five years later one of my daughters and her husband moved here, an just last month another one did. We love it here. We're on 32 acres of our own garden of Eden and love this Commonwealth.
BTW, I visited with Mazzie on my last trip to Seattle. Even though we are political opposites, vinyl brings us together, and it was a great time.😎

Congratulations. I'm moved around a ton. Home is more about the people that you decide to share your life with than any house or city, but it's still not easy. Thanks for sharing info about your videos too. I've never understood the argument against monetization. It's only an issue if you're chasing the dollar by compromising what you do. I don't see that happening much, if at all in this niche.

Firehouse was the 3rd? CD I purchased, that is flashback. I'm not intentionally buying a record that is a rip of a CD or unauthorized copy. However, I need to verify as I may have unwittingly bought one this year. I remember the days of knowing the CD shops that sold board recordings of concerts before it clicked how illegal that was.
Agreed with your logic on monetizing, some cash is better than none and they are selling ads. The amount is your business, not ours. Granted we do get curious as many of us have thoughts of creating our own channels about this or another topic. Mary Spender has some good videos on the business of YT.
Congrats to your daughter. If you're going to move, the beach is a great spot to go. Yes I understand the home sick part as I have lived in the same area my entire life. I've considered moving twice and oddly both times were central Florida. If the second had been closer to the coast, I might have taken it. My words of wisdom are, I'd get a power generator for the new place and enjoy your walks on the beach.
Haven't commented in a bit. Saw your Skylabs interview good stuff, I like their videos and seem like a good group of guys. Sweet Melissa records in Marietta, GA had a line out the door at 1PM on record day. They opened at 10:00 or sooner. If you're traveling between the new place and current location and need a break, drop in. I think you'd like their shop and they are on the square with plenty of restaurants around.

I think I initially ended up with quite few "counterfeit" records before I started learning about pressings. These days I just be patient until a good OG (or close to) at a reasonable price turns up or if a good quality officially released reissue comes out. Like you over the last few years I've been on a journey upgrading my stereo components until I've now got something that I'm really happy with for the space that I have and what was within my means. And with this in mind it's another reason why it's worth getting the better pressings because they really do sing on my set up these days.
Seems it's the time to move in the VC. Steve Carlson has recently done a series of videos about his move and the logistics of moving his record collection. My biggest move was in the late 90's from Melbourne to Perth which is across the other side of the country (a 3 day drive doing 10-12 hrs on the road each day) And then I moved back again 3 years later!!! Admittedly I didn't have as many records then, but I had a lot of books, a drumkit, guitars and amplifiers plus regular stuff and that was big enough for me. All the best with your move and I think with your positive attitude you can make anything work and will quickly form new bonds and friendships in Florida. Cheers...Ben

I moved from IL to NY at 26, just me and my dog, and left my entire family behind. Parents, grandparents, siblings, friends, everyone I knew. For probably 4-5 years I was very homesick and had so many thoughts about giving up and moving back but then slowly as I returned for visits I started to miss where I actually lived and IL felt more foreign to me. It may never fully go away but your new home will start to feel like home eventually.

You sound so excited, and it's very cool that you're going to be close by when your daughter and her husband want you there, rather than several hours drive away. But....a palm tree? In the FRONT YARD? Yeesh....LOL! Just stay aware of where you are and where any expected storms are going to be coming ashore, wouldn't want anything crazy happening!
