In this video, I mention that the Thriller reissue was a 25th anniversary version. It's definitely a reissue but probably not a 25th anniversary one. Thank you and I apologize for the error.
Hi Melinda, if I understand correctly you went to one local/regional second hand store (McKay's of Tennessee and North Carolina) and found they had overpriced records. And then you made a video calling them out. Did you point out to them that their pricing was above market and ask for comment before making the video? Do you know if this is ignorance on their part or a deliberate policy? Is it isolated to one branch of McKay's? Perhaps they could use your help. Your solution is to go to Target or Walmart or a local store, which is a bit unspecific. Plus McKay's are local and of course that's better than supporting a big chain. Isn't the solution actually just to be price aware and to let retailers know if they're not competitive? That might actually help someone else not get stung in the future rather than saying nothing and leaving the problem out there for the next person to face. If we're generalizing wouldn't part of the solution also be to not accept prices from Mofi that are set based on an analogue provenance and which have not been revised to reflect their newly admitted digital origin? It's the prices at the top of the market that give sellers like McKay's the leeway and tacit permission to price higher and hope they get away with it. It seems like you're being selective with your criticism and certainly unfair if you haven't asked McKay's for comment. Thank you and have a great day!
She isnt being unfair, what she is talking about is a standard practice of most record stores now. They are taking advantage of newer record collectors ignorance on what records are actually worth. Stores are also just paying the over priced mark up from the labels and distros rather than just saying no and passing the extra cost to consumers. A local chain to me is pretty consistant on charging double for records from Earache records which you can get online and any other store for the expected cost or pretty close to it.
@@Mabuhay_Ka Say it to them, let them know why you aren't buying, say you are making a video that will call them out, ask them for comment, and don't apologize for mofi prices without criticism. That's the fair approach, and that's how to constructively handle it.
@@lokitio if they are unaware of competitive pricing , they don't know how to run a business . It's hardly the customers job to help them manage the store. While it is not constructive to a record buyers goals to shop as though on a secret mission, if you point out what you consider as an untenable price, it's either considered one person's opinion against their professional judgment, something they already know, or, if they didn't know it, they are probably too dumb to recognize good advice anyway. As for the crack about mobile fidelity, it sounds a bit contrarian, just thrown in seeking justification of your views and internet victory. They sell and price records on absolute sound quality, not on the accuracy of the hype material inside. A business is not going to lower successful pricing because some people got their feelings hurt because they couldn't hear a digital step in the manufacturing chain that was used to improve product, and want to elevate reading literature about the primary product, the record, over listening.
@@richardelliott8352 if you're going to publish it in an expose on youtube, its good manners to offer the right to comment. And if you're so concerned about the next person coming along, you owe it to them to at least mention it. You're not right about Mobile Fidelity, their pricing premium was predicated on an anologue provenance. That was an immutable and intrinsic part of their value proposition. If they're given carte blanche to retain this pricing for a digital product, it's no wonder other record producers and retailers feel empowered to set artificially high prices. If we don't push back, we deserve what Melinda got.
Hey Melinda. It’s why I stopped buying vinyl after 25 years of collecting, it’s taken the fun out of it, beyond crazy. I collect VHS tapes now. Good to see you. Take care and great video!
You didn't collect for sound then. Pre-covid inflation has push prices up on everything! For some reason people point out record's when groceries are outrageously through the roof!
Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expect a different result, people buy records for $100 dollars thinking they're special, and stores owners are happy to sell them if they get enough suckers to pay $50, $75, $100 dollars or more because they have an addiction and "they gotta have it", thank you for your videos, thumbs up!
Hi there and how are you doing:)!! And WOW LOL yes you are so right about the $$$ on all of these:)!! The sad thing about all of these Albums they are out of print. I do think that buying Vinyl is like buying stock💰 lol!!! You have a great collection your self and a great video you did on this!!! Take care and good to see you:).
Hey Beatles Brad! It's great to hear from you. If the stereo versions of these albums are all out of print, then the higher prices make a little more sense. I still see these versions in the stores quite often but they may be starting to phase them out. Either way, the prices have really been climbing up there. I remember how low the prices were when I first started collecting. Things have really changed. I hope you are still doing well and staying healthy. Take care and God bless.♥️
All is good and I do feel good too to God be the Glory great thing he has done that is for sure!!! I+ I do have a great Wife too to help me with it all. Some good day and not some good days too. But the Lord he is there with me through it all:)!!! Ok on to Records lol. It is just wild to see so much difference then a few years ago lol and you know this too. But it is still fun to spin Vinyl and have a fun collection. And I do know that you are still enjoying it all GO FOR IT GIRL lol!!!!! Great to see you and have a great week and the good Lord bless you and your hole Family too :) . Take care!!!!
Thanks for making this video! It’s important that none of us get duped into paying double the price or more on a record we can get elsewhere. The sad thing is as long as people keep paying up, those kind of places will never change or care. And I’ll have to give the mutual attraction albums a listen! They sound interesting, especially that first one
I’m right there with ya - prices getting more and more ridiculous. I don’t blame the record stores or even the resellers, however. I blame the people who are actually coughing up the money and paying these ridiculous prices
@@MelindaMurphy I have a store with similar prices that is located in a giant well known mall that is probably one of a handful in the entire country that is still thriving, (KOP mall). I can't imagine what their rent is but like you I laugh at the ridiculous prices. They have a reissued, remastered copy of Lou Reed Rock n Roll Animal for $48 that has been collecting dust for a while now. Nostalgia and the baby boomers having more disposable income are a big factor I'm thinking. Also I think you have younger generations that grew up with CDs and mp3s that are into vinyl but have no reference to what they used to sell for in the past. One final point is most new records by current bands are usually in the $20-$30 range.
I may be wrong but typically the thing that makes a specific vinyl expensive is release date, issue, availability, and condition. Limited run collections, first pressings. Things like this cause certain vinyls to be worth hundreds even thousands. And for good reason. It's sort of how pokemon cards and guitars can sell for sick money. Collectors looking for vintage stuff. It's an investment too because you sure can make money ahead in time
The only time I see prices that crazy is at places that don’t just sell records. Like antique or thrift stores. If a record store had anything priced like the ones you showed, I would walk straight out. I know there would Be nothing there for me lol. Another great video and cool shirt Melinda! Have a fantastic week! Gary
You’re definitely not alone in your opinion, these prices are absolutely ridiculous! But they’ll never lower their prices as long as someone shows them the money. Why should they? Well, they can have them. I’m just glad I hung on to my original purchases from the 1970s and later, even after a lot of people began selling off their collections. I still have most of my albums that I do not need to repurchase, which includes Thriller, Revolver, and Magical Mystery Tour.
I noticed the price increase early last year, and it's gotten to the point where I just don't go record shopping as often as I used to. It's not that I can't afford them but I can't justify the expense anymore, especially when I can stream the same music to my system from Spotify at a fraction of the cost. Inflation and greed are killing our beloved hobby.
I will repeat it once again; I’m so relieved and glad that I hung on to every piece of music I wanted to obtain. I only look for obscure artist compilations of the 50s and 60s now, and it helps tremendously that I’m not after The Eagles’ Greatest Hits, Thriller or Rumours. I got all those when it was smart to do so, between the 70s and 90s, for one to five bucks. TOPS.
I am in 100% agreement with your presentation here today! Some of the prices on records are totally outrageous now. Let the buyer beware! I myself will not jump at the first copy I see, but will research and shop around for a better price if I feel the record is priced too high. As long as customers continue to pay these ridiculous prices that some businesses charge, it will not change. You did a great job here, by informing your viewers to be aware, and shop around for better prices! 🏆💯😁
You are so right , album prices are going up and up. That's why 90 percent of my music purchases are still cds. And I have noticed that prices on new and used cds are also going up. What is a music lover to do lol.
I go to library sales and buy, for fifty cents or a buck each, all the CDs that people are dumping because "vinyl just sounds better." Well, maybe if you have a $100K stereo system and only play the record once. :-)
I'd love to see records at those prices haha. Here in Australia most new vinyl records are $70-90. I've stopped buying new vinyl altogether. I stick to second hand or do without!
I know that records are very expensive in Australia. Every time I complain, I do realize that things could be worse. I would love to see records become more affordable for you. Thank you and take care.
Hi Melinda, Such an educational video. Thank you for letting everyone know to be careful and do your homework before buying some of these used records. You are so right. Wow could not believe some of the prices you saw. Interesting video, great topic. Have a great day!
Afternoon Melinda. After ready some of the comments you receive, I felt I had to write to say, I REALLY ADMIRE YOU. You have often spoke about how shy you are, but the love of music and vinyl has put you on the screen and open to people's need to pull someone else to pieces, pick at everything they say and find fault for no real reason. You work really hard on your content on here and it's very much appreciated. I'm sorry for you that there are people out there waiting in the sidelines ready to find fault and try to draw you into some sort of argument. Please always remember, those sort of people are "ten a penny". So many of us enjoy what you do and appreciate your hard work. You keep doing what your doing and THANK YOU. all the best for now, Flossy.
Time for us Vinyl buyers show these greedy buggers a lesson in retail exploitation. Don't buy them let the shelves crammed with rip-off prices. Hopefully they prices will become fair. I make it a point of buying used and support Thrift inde stores. Melinda keep up your great content. Take Care God Bless. Stay Lovely!
That's exactly what I did, I had a store I was buying 45's from this store had probably 2,000 or more 45's I was pretty much the only one buying them and many of them they had 8 to 10 copies of each. So on record store day they had a discount on records so I went to buy some more 45's and they doubled the price they were charging me, needless to say I haven't been back and I hope they like sitting on all those space wasters.
It makes me sick to see what stores are charging nowadays. $25 for BOSTON or THE POLICE? These are common titles; there are millions and millions of them out there. There is no excuse for a price of more than maybe 7 dollars or so.
Hi Michael! Good to see you here! Love your videos too! I know you're a big Led Zeppelin fan too. I found an original "In Through The Out Door" with the paper bag for 20 bucks in pretty nice condition with the original sleeve intact. I bought a 180 gram vinyl version before I found the original for around the same price. Maybe $25.00 or so. The thing that grinded my gears was when I went to another record shop they had A "Led Zeppelin III" LP sealed with the hype sticker and list of songs for $250.00! It wasn't even an 1841 Broadway pressing of it. It was SD and then a 5 digit catalog number. The original has 4 digits and the "From The Atlantic Catalogue" inner sleeve. Better off finding the 9 CD box new with the remasters by Jimmy Page for less than $100.00. No bonus tracks but no big whoop. Cheers, man. I subscribed to you channel as well! Peace! Nick The Record Lover
Hi Melinda! Hope you and your family are doing well. I loved this video. You hit the nail on the head when you said " A record is only worth what a person wants to pay for it". But the prices even in the record stores I used to frequent the prices are sky high for common records. Once in awhile I get lucky now. There is another video you did which was terrific. It was about listening and being happy with the music you have and not piling more records into the collection. Great advice. I was in a shop where I have a great rapport with the owner and co-workers who always appreciate my business. It was luck when I looked in the Led Zeppelin bin and found "Physical Graffiti" on 180 gram vinyl and the price was $34.99. Then when I went to a bin that had a sign reading "Reduced priced records" and the same Zep album was $18.99. Needless to say I grabbed it. I won't go for an over-over priced original. Keep up the great work! Nick The Record Lover
Hey Melinda spot on. I've been saying for a while how stupid expensive new vinyl prices have become. It only seems that those 2012 Beatles LP's have gone up further than when first released. For example I paid $500 AUD for my EU Beatles Remasters stereo LP box in January 2013. Averaging out 14 LP's works to be around $35.70 AUD each (2 of these are double LP's too). With exchange rate that would've been around $20-25 USD. Remember also that there were major quality issues with the US Rainbo pressings at that time. Yes these are sourced digitally per the equivalent 2009 remaster CD's so also they're not as highly regarded. However to my ears they sound great and the hardcover book is fantastic (different to the Mono Box). Here in Australia they sell for around $59.95 individually. Now I know I've been guilty of spending big on the recent Beatles boxed sets but that is ridiculous for ostensibly SINGLE LP's. However it seems all new release vinyl is priced that way. Why would I spend that much on a single LP when the CD equivalent is $20+ cheaper. The last 'new' non-Beatles vinyl I bought was around a year or so back with a bunch of sealed Roy Orbison MGM label reissues that were on sale, as well as a Stooges LP. Otherwise I avoid them. It's not just the chain stores like JB HI-FI here in Oz that are guilty either. You'll see the same in independent stores too. Vinyl collecting is a trendy thing. However it's annoying to see for long term collectors such as myself and many others and for those that are relatively new to the hobby. Being in the US you seem a bit more fortunate in the pricing area but then those those Walmart prices say otherwise. Either the record companies &/or the stores are gouging on pricing and that's going to have a long term effect on the LP medium. In their heyday, LP's were affordable, but for the convenience of the CD to all but wipe it out. Ironically vinyl has made a comeback at a bigger price point than the CD. But for how long? Enough from me. Hope you're well, safe and happy. Love your work sweetheart as always. Cheers. 😘❤️
I agree that my little gripes in this video are nothing in comparison to some of the prices people in other countries are paying. I bet you're glad you bought your records so long ago.🤩 Thank you so much! ♥️ Take care.
@@MelindaMurphy I'm thankful I had the good sense and foresight to keep my LP's when many others were offloading them in favour of CD's. Those people are probably sadly regretting it now and are literally paying the price. 🙄🙄 Cheers Melinda 😘
Blimey Melinda those prices are absolutely crazy!! Just shows how you definitely need to shop around. Even here in the UK you have to be vigilant too. Keep up the good work, great videos👍
Agree 100% Melinda. The record shops here in my city have all hiked prices significantly over the last couple of years. Common used records going for $10 or 12 a few years ago are now mid $20s! New records are anywhere from $45 to even $80. Double discs even more! I am extremely selective in what I buy now.
Saw those Mckays stickers. Which store were you in. I go in the Knoxville one all the time. I have noticed that they have been pricing the really popular LPs to the 50 dollar mark...
This is the one in Nashville. I do find some deals in there but they have crazy mark ups on the popular bands and artists. Someone must be buying them. 🤔 Thank you and take care.
@@MelindaMurphy Cool, I havent been to the Nashville store in a couple of years. Need to get back over that way...Yeah, people are buying up these $50 records, because I go in the Knoxville store a couple of times a week and when I come back they are gone...Just last year, I bought the Thriller Reissue in Wal-Mart for $17.99...Its NOT a $50 dollar record. NO WAY....BUT if someone is stupid enough to pay it, then I guess it is..LOL...However, doesnt anyone check amazon before buying a used record?? Thriller is $19.99 on there right now..
I have that same MMT that you have. I think I got it at an old chain store around 1978 0r 1979. Is McKays a USA chain? There is one in Greensboro and Winston Salem N. C. .Where is the one you shopped in?
I guess it must be a chain store. I do find the occasional record there for a good price but what they charge for the popular bands/artists is insane. Thank you and have a great weekend.
Hey Melinda. Have you been buying any of the Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series reissues? I'm just getting into jazz and they are great sounding for very reasonable prices.
I agree with you about the very high prices for re-issues of old albums. In many cases you can actually find Mint copies of ORIGINAL FIRST PRESSINGS for much less than the cost of modern re-issues. These days, the internet makes it easy to find original copies of almost anything you could want.
Hi Melinda!!! I am so glad you make a video on this topic. As for me personally I do not really go out much in the winter so I have not noticed the prices of vinyl higher and higher, with the exception of Wal-Mart. Some records they have are expensive but for the most part, reasonable if you want a new record. When ever you mentioned $52 for a record I said to myself that is so ridiculous. They do this because some people buy them and pay these outrageous prices. It is sad, because it really ruins the "Buying Vinyl experience"
Thanks for this great video and yes, I have noticed crazy crazy prices for both new and used records. It's good to know others feel the same way in the vinyl community.
Hello Melinda, I enjoyed your video. Two things. I didn't know that vinyl albums were released in "mono". I assumed all albums were in stereo. And how can I tell if a vinyl album is an original issue or a re-issue? Thanks, Steve
Records from the mid 60's and earlier are usually mono. Stereo came around later. Trying to determine whether you have an original or a reissue requires some detective work. If I'm questioning what pressing I have, I use the Discogs app and enter the numbers(and letters) that are in the dead wax of the record in question. I hope that helps. Thank you and take care.
Thank goodness you showed us the rest of your t - shirt. I was thinking 🤔 Grim Reaper, what a worry. But it's Grim Reaper Records. You are right, i live in New Zealand and brand new vinyl is extremely pricy here But people are still purchasing it. I have stopped buying music, and I'm going through my massive collection playing it. I have so much . Huge Jazz lot.
On another forum I mention I was buying sealed OJC lps in the late 80's/early 90's at $6 each. Some asked if the current releases at $39 would be comparable due to inflation. While at $39 they may be a fair market price, they are not a good value. $6 in 1990 adjusted for inflation would cost $13.74 today. Crazy!
Hi Melinda Wow those prices are crazy! The Queen record I picked up at walmart a few years back was around 32 dollars 2 record set. Boy I hope like you said people aren't spending all that money . Thanks for sharing. Big hug for Lucy!🙂❤
Holy crap! That is just outrageous. I got into this much later and I was bemoaning the fact that I had missed the boat when vinyl was still more of a smaller cult following. At least I still came in when prices were cheaper and basic titles were in the bins. Thriller for $57?!
I understand your frustrations. On a positive note, so many cool reissues have come out in recent years. We have a lot more choices as collectors today. Thank you and take care.
Hello Melinda, hope you and yours are doing well. I ordered some LPs near the beginning of last year; I still haven't received them. Placed an order with Music Direct yesterday, and only one of the LPs was in stock. It was mentioned to me that record pressing plants are two to two and a half years behind on their orders and LPs are hard to get. Could that have anything to do with some of the prices out there, I wonder? And by the way, I wouldn't pay any of those prices you mentioned either. Thanks for the warning.
Hey Melinda! I've watched a few of your videos. I'm curious, are you in Tennessee? And, regarding this video, is this store one of about a half a dozen stores in the Southeast?
This video is so spot on about the prices vs age/reissue justification. The prices you showed are what I call BSC prices..crazy crazy for sure. But on those particular copies if a serious collector bought them they overpaid for sure. What really irks me to no end is the friggin price stickers on the jackets themselves...or labels. Getting it off without damaging it is one thing...but most leave their mark as they also pull off the sheen which on black and white look horrible. i have both the mono Revolver...killer piece as well as Thriller. My local one off stores have fair prices but i have seen a regional chain put the craziest prices on common records with beat up jackets...grrr.. Thanks for the great video Melinda;-) Here's hoping the prices will start coming down soon.
I bought my first record at 16 and now I’m 61 I have about 1800 albums in my collection and approximately three or four are the new 180 g records. Depending what city I’m in I’ve seen some records with $80 price tags it should say $25. I compare every record that I look at the Discogs, popsike and other platforms to ensure what I’m willing and should pay. I’m pretty sure it’s the uneducated bandwagon sellers that are pricing these records. Great video keep on trucking.
Dear Ms. M: The vinyl consumer is soon going to tire of this over-priced gig, and the prices are going to come down, but not before they first get totally comical. The stock brokerages used to charge ten dollars a trade till Robin hood trading started its zero-commission program, and soon all the big brokerages decided it was a really good idea to drop the commissions altogether. Tower Records will probably take the lead, and in five years from now, you will be able to buy vinyls at $7.00 a pop…like it used to be in the good old days of the 70’s…That is my take on this, and you can take that to the bank. I truly enjoy your videos...Keep up the good work!
McKay's in Nashville is notorious for their crazy prices on records. I go in there occasionally for a laugh. I'm glad you showed Magical Mystery Tour as that was the first LP I bought with my own money. I loved The Beatles & Monkees as a kid and in 1968 when I was 10 I bought MMT. It is on the lime green Capitol label that was used for a short time in the late 60s. I still have the record!
There’s a shop near me (Lovell’s Record store) in Whittier, CA that are notorious for having absurd prices but sad that the place gets packed. At one point, they were selling The Smiths’ The Queen is Dead for $50 lol I got mine for $30 at another shop but I agree with you that the prices are absurd now.
Lol. I still need a copy of that record. Fifty dollars does seem a little high for it. I'm glad you got the better deal. Thank you and have a great week!
"Yikes" is right, Melinda. I mentioned in a earlier post that '180 Gram Vinyl' stickers are often used to boost the prices on albums like the 'Thriller' you showed. Vinyl weight has nothing to do with sound quality! Also, you really have to know your stuff when paying big bucks for 'rare' albums! Condition-wise, I've had the best luck on Ebay, though I've paid a premium for some albums. I can always 'price and compare' on Ebay. In any case, I don't think prices will come down until the vinyl craze dies, whenever that happens (kinda hope it doesn't)! Take care.
Fun video! Yeah, there's a shop here in San Diego that has a cool semi-cottage behind it where there are usually tons of great used records for $3 or $5. I've pulled so many great records from there, and I love the shop because of it. On the other hand, looking at their "new" stuff often actually makes me mad! Some of the prices are off the charts crazy. Meanwhile, even worse is when I look through their "New Used Arrivals", and see $25-$40 records in maybe VG at best. It's just kind of sad. But hey, if someone's gonna get taken, someone's gonna get taken. Enjoyed the show, Melinda! Cheers!
I absolutely agree with you about crazy prices. I've stopped buying new albums years ago. I only know of two thrift stores that sometimes have a mix of used old and recent albums. The prices are very low but unfortunately it's a one hour drive and some collectors now know about them. A recent report about vinyl record sales surpassing CDs. The report found that about fifty percent of buyers don't own a turntable. This means that they are flippers. Thanks for sharing and I love your family shopping routine.
You're probably right about the flippers. I also believe that young people are buying Taylor Swift and other artists records as collectibles or with the hope of having a turntable someday. The prices are pretty crazy right now. Thank you and take care.
That report is misguiding the public. It's not true that vinyl has overtaken CD sales, not by quantity, but by unit cost. Think about it. In very basic terms, you sell 10 CDs at £1 each, that's £10 and 5 records at £5 each, total £25 & hey presto, you've sold more vinyl than CDs! There are better and more detailed examples on RUclips about this.
Hi Melinda, I share your amazement at the prices retailers are charging for vinyl old & battered or new. Why anyone would even pay $30 for a modern reissue when an original in great condition can be found on Discogs or eBay for a third of the price baffles me. I was in a prominent store yesterday and saw really ragged, second and third-tier items for 40 and 50 dollars that shouldn't have been priced more than a buck apiece. With about 20,000 LPs myself, these prices make me fantasize about immediate retirement! I noticed that all the price stickers on the albums you showed here had McKay price stickers. I shop at the McKays in Nashville, Knoxville, Winston Salem and Virginia (a rogue family store). Which one do you frequent? Nice job here!
Wow! You have quite the collection. You could probably have a nice chunk of change for retirement if you chose to downsize the collection. I agree that for those prices, the original would be the way to go most of the time. Thank you and take care.
My local record store has a Metallica Walmart St. Anger for 40 dollars used, while the Walmart down the street has the same record for 27.95 Sealed, it can be confusing at times.
Good video. Mutual Attraction $20 - $25 at Walmart. M Jackson - find many for $5 or less, VG LedZeppelin, Beatles, Queen- wait for WalMart back Friday - $15 each Footloose - pass
Nicely done on this video Melinda! You gave ALL the required information in your preamble. There is no way anyone can have any question of your position. If they do something is wrong with them. The fact is that it doesn't cost anymore today to make a record as it did 4 years ago. Any increase in price on new records is pure greed, nothing else. As far as those prices from that shop goes, that is the latest trend. Record shops everywhere are going crazy with the prices for used records without any evidence of reason to back it up! Record shops will always charge a bit more than in the wild due to overhead, which is completely understood. However, what is being seen now of late is way far beyond that and into the realm of criminal activity. To price a $5 record at $50 should be illegal, but it is not. Part of the problem as you pointed out is that there are too many people not using their heads correctly and willing to pay those prices, which just feeds the problem. Unfortunately, that won't change. I picked up a used copy of Led Zep Physical Graffiti for $10 and it is in good shape and intact. As for remasters of Zep LPs, I have heard two or three different ones and personally find them annoying. They are either tilted up too much or the mix is all wrong. The OPs and subsequent reissues from the 70s are sonically superior in my opinion in this case. (This is not true for every case).
If you could have a blanket rule, it's that the OG LP will probably be sonically superior to any reissue. Tape degradation or even original master availability being just one possible issue. Yes, i've gotten a few newer versions that are stunning, but that's usually the exception. About the only thing that might be an improvement is quieter vinyl.
@@slidetek Well, there is no such thing as quieter vinyl. The pellet mix is what it is and it doesn't matter where the pellets are sourced from. All PVC pellet manufactures do use some "recycled material", but it is not generations old or used for other things, it is generally only pellets that slipped through the complete cook and are certified clean. Pellet quality is the same from anywhere unless one knows that the manufacture is knowingly using dirty formulation. This is very rare though. It is like the myth about them melting down Bic pens in the 70s to make records from them. That actually never happened. Record pressing plants are very dirty environments and that is the start, so that is why even new records must be properly cleaned, whether or not one believes there is some external stamper mold release agent or not. The second the record comes off the press it is contaminated as it sits waiting for packaging. To get quieter vinyl requires one to clean their records properly, new or used. No, you do not have to do that every time you want to play a record. After a certain point you only need to dust the record with an anti-static brush or what have you. I'm only talking about initial cleaning. Quietness can also depend on one's phono cart set up and one's phono preamp, but none of these things work independently. Vinyl records are an "it is what it is" type thing and one either accepts it or does not. As for OG LPs sounding superior to newer versions: Sometimes that is true and sometime not, it depends. For example, in my opinion the OG Led Zep LPs sound sonically superior to the newer versions. Again, it is all opinion. For the record I have not heard many newer versions of LPs. Much of the music I listen too has not been reissued. While the OG pressings I have are nice, I am curious though about hearing a Chicago reissue, but they are hard to find and I am not paying $50+ for ANY record.
I’ve noticed some higher prices lately as well, and I think it comes down to a couple things 1) Whoever is pricing the records has no real idea of the actual going price, but they see the artist or album and just slap a price on it. 2) Because the records are the big thing these days they can put those prices on them and like you said someone poor unsuspecting soul will pay it. It’s sad and it kind of ruins it for everyone. But as long as people will pay those prices, they will keep asking those prices.
Hi Melinda… let me guess, you went to Mckays again in Nashville? As I mentioned in one of your other videos that place is way over priced and I don’t even bother going there. There are better places in Nashville to get records. There’s even one with a bar. Forgot the name though
I would much rather go to Phonoluxe but the family doesn't like going to record stores so this is the only place I can go with the family. ☹️ Unfortunately, the prices can be very crazy there. Thank you and take care.
Love your Impulse collection, great stuff. Yeah, the prices are crazy high, but as long as suckers are willing to pay those prices, we won't be seeing reasonable prices again.
I love you keep showing McKay's 😂 there's another place in Tennessee that is worse than them and they're in Lebanon, about 20 minutes east of Nashville. They were a flea market turned into a vinyl store that still has flea market items. They do Facebook sales and the prices for common stuff are insane.
There must be new collectors with deep pockets who aren't aware they are buying a used reissue. People seem to pay up for colored vinyl, which is a feature that I don't care anything about. I haven't purchased a record this year. I think I only bought one record last year. I used to buy 5-10 records per week for years and years.
My vinyl buying has slowed down quite a bit too. Thankfully, I have a lot of what I want already. I feel for the brand new collectors. Thank you and take care.
So pleased I have the originals including 1st pressings of most of what you showed, particularly Led Zeppelin II and MJ Thriller, Queen etc - I think back in the day I paid less than or around £5 (UK) at the time
I had the same experience as you last Friday evening, Melinda, in a store over here in the UK called Fopp. All new releases in this case but I struggled to find ANYTHING costing less than £35 to £40, and I'm just talking about regular releases and not box sets or limited editions. Suffice to say I left empty-handed and very disappointed.
mate i went to an hmv store in carlisle back in 09 recall even then surprised high prices before vinly went up so high good selection of cds also but got a few comps a q maybe folk for 5 pounds each budget rack because some parts of the dales you cant get bbc on the radio high vinly then so yeh you mates today really big pounds same here now greetings from virginia ps new cds were quite high also meant to say at least the pints in dales just a 2pound coin haha
I'm sorry! It is disappointing but at least you didn't overpay for a record. Hopefully, they will adjust their prices if enough people are like you. Thank you and take care.
Ha! I go to McKays too and they have no idea how to prove records. That said, this also means for every 10 or so crazily overpriced records you find something they have underpriced. Overall, it’s a frustrating experience and I feel terrible for anyone paying those prices. But I usually walk out of there with something surprising.
A few weeks ago I was visiting a friend in Knoxville and she brought me to McKay’s. When I saw what they had and what they were priced I laughed and told her “You know this place is a joke, right?” Totally beat up blah records for $35-50. Stuff I wouldn’t pay a quarter for. Completely insane. And people had shopping carts full of ‘em. All I got was a Dokken double live album that was in great shape for $17.
If you dig deep enough, you can find some good deals there. They are guilty of overpricing the most popular bands and artists. Thank you and take care.
I've seen some outrageous prices lately but I've also been pleasantly surprised with some of my purchases too. I got a sealed original Natalie Cole Unforgettable With Love for $5 yesterday! Also got some really amazing sounding Little River Band records too. I had no idea George Martin produced their album Time Exposure with The Night Owls, Man On Your Mind and Take It Easy On Me on it. It's really a great sounding release.
Thank you for the video. I will try not to spend too much money on a record. I am visiting Seattle tomorrow to attend a concert. I plan to stop at a record store there. I don't know what thier prices are like. This video is a timely reminder to not over spend.
Great topic. I have a store near me that has an expensive record wall and his prices are easily 25-30% more than discogs for the same record, but yet he sells them. Someone is out there buying them..for me I check stores, labels, ebay and discogs to find the best price. Also I thought you were wearing a Grim Reaper ( 80s heavy metal band) shirt. I thought w ow, melinda has gotten into some metal this episode.
I do need to check out some metal at some point. 😃 If people are willing to pay those prices then they will keep charging more. Thank you and take care.
Regarding the Beatles Magical Mystery, it would seem the remastered record would be the way to go. I currently have the original stereo version I purchased back in the 80's but the remastered ones so far that I have listened to, seem to be a nice step up in sound.
The new stereo versions are digital and I haven't heard them so I have no idea how they sound. The prices at this store are too high. You can find these newer Beatles records for much cheaper elsewhere. Thank you and have a great week.
I don't have a copy of Physical Graffiti - still deciding what to buy. I heard the recent Walmart press is good and cheap. May go for a 70s press just to have an analog copy. David Gilmour's first solo album is on my long list to buy too.
I bought very many vinyl records before digital came around. The prices were affordable. Now greed is the driving force behind everything and putting people off experiencing the beauty of music on records and tapes. Very sad. Your videos are always good. Cheers
I was in a r3cord store yesterday and saw Taco’s Putting On The Ritz album for $25. Saaaaay whaaaat? On the podcast I do our Sunday show was about high prices we have found especially in antique stores. We continue that discussion this week on new vinyl. So many record stores have opened around MI and the prices are really nuts in some of them
Funny, I just started watching your videos and just a bit into this one I was thinking “that sounds like what McKays does”. Then I saw the stickers… Their pricing is all over the place on everything else they carry but the vinyl pricing is unilaterally awful. It’s a shame because I like to support businesses like this and they have some good finds but it’s just not even close value wise most of the time. Fortunately I have found most places to not be quite as bad as McKays, but it sucks I can’t just stay in town and find good selections at a decent price. Fun videos, I’m enjoying them. Maybe I’ll see you grimacing at McKays sometime 😂
McKay's can be a little out there with their pricing but I can also find some gems there as well. It's a mixed bag. We go there because my daughter loves books. There's something for everyone there. Thank you and take care.
Crazy prices have filtered down to thrift stores and used vinyl. My local Savers recently went from .99 cents to $1.49. They can’t use the supply chain excuse, or the price of gasoline.
I remember when I started buying records again in 2013 started that years RSD and prices were way cheaper, prices are too darn high so I am very selective nowadays and hardly buy vinyls anymore.. it was more fun buying and collecting back then now it’s ruined. And I was so happy that vinyl was starting to make a comeback and here it is but it’s breaking the bank.
It's Even WORSE On Ebay...Some Of The Bloody Outrageous Prices People In There Want Fir Used Records~Cassettes & CDs...For Example Some Chap Is Asking $49.95 For A Used Copy Of The Thrash Band HEATHENS Classic Debut LP: Breaking The Silence...
In my country Argentina, now you can get the Led Zeppelin II album in a new vinyl edition for 13 dollars. Also Queen's double album, Greatest Hits, new vinyl edition for 36 dollars. For the same price, Physical Graffiti, Led Zeppelin's double album.
The Mck*ys in Chattanooga has gotten pretty rough bit I havent seen prices like that here. Some are definitely higher than I would pay. Bostons self titled for example, every time I see it there (which is often) is always priced waaay to high. And I see a copy of it every time I go in. Great video!
I'm buying more cds this past year..waiting for vinyl prices to come down....
VHS forever, same here. 📼
You didn't collect for sound then. Pre-covid inflation has push prices up on everything! For some reason people point out record's when groceries are outrageously through the roof!
Your not the real "dots & loops" channel, I just check this channel out! You are a troller!
@@analoguecity3454everyone is talking about grocery prices - Canada’s federal government is even holding hearings
It's a vicious cycle. Thank you so much! 😃
Pretty much. Those same stores give you pennies on the dollar for your used records.
Thank you so much! ♥️
Hey Melinda

I am a big fan Of The Beatles💕💕💕💕
I love your RUclips channel too 💕
Thank you so much! The Beatles are simply the best.♥️
@@MelindaMurphy yes simply agree with you 💕💕💕💕
I’m right there with ya - prices getting more and more ridiculous.
I don’t blame the record stores or even the resellers, however. I blame the people who are actually coughing up the money and paying these ridiculous prices
I agree! For some reason, people are paying these crazy prices. ☹️ Thank you and take care.
It's an investment too because you sure can make money ahead in time
Not only are those prices ridiculous but they put the price tag directly on the album cover! 😮 That’s a huge No-No for me!
I know. 🤔 Thankfully, their stickers usually come off easily if you slowly and carefully remove them. It's still ridiculous. Thank you and take care.
The only time I see prices that crazy is at places that don’t just sell records. Like antique or thrift stores. If a record store had anything priced like the ones you showed, I would walk straight out. I know there would Be nothing there for me lol. Another great video and cool shirt Melinda! Have a fantastic week!
Gary
This store does sell several media formats. They aren't just a record store and that probably makes a difference. Thank you and take care.
Inflation rising in the whole world, you’ll find everything is more expensive every year and that’s a fact. Cheers from Buenos Aires!
I agree. Inflation is causing the new records to go up in price sadly. Thank you and take care.
If people keep buying, they're going to keep charging those crazy prices. Thank you and take care.
Thank you for putting up another lovely video. Keep going because we need you!
You're very sweet! Thank you!
I'm so glad I bought most of my records in the late 90's for 1-3 dollars, those were the days.
Those were the days! Good for you!!!!♥️😃
Yep, me too.
Unfortunately, you make some great points. I am being very careful too. Thank you and take care.
TOPS.
Good for you! Saving your precious records has paid off in a huge way!!! Applause!!!
Really enjoying your videos! The Vinyl Vault watching from across the pond.
Awesome! Thank you! 🤗♥️
Thank you so much! Hopefully, those records do not sell. Take care.
CD's are still a pretty good bargain. I still find deals just a lot less often now. Thank you and take care.
Just got back from Tasmania and someone had an unnumbered White album second hand at the Samamanca markets for $350!!! Crazy 🤡
Hi Melinda, Such an educational video. Thank you for letting everyone know to be careful and do your homework before buying some of these used records. You are so right. Wow could not believe some of the prices you saw. Interesting video, great topic. Have a great day!
Thank you very much! 😃♥️
Used albums have gotten outrageous.
It's forced me to start buying CD's, but now they're going up!
CD prices are on the rise. We'll see what happens. 😃
@@MelindaMurphy Thank God for I tunes downloads.

Oh wow! You're very sweet. Thank you so much for the encouragement. This means more to me than the criticism I sometimes receive. You made my day! 🥰
Always Always enjoy the content no matter the topic Thank You very much
Much appreciated! Thank you so much! ♥️
I'm hoping nobody pays those ridiculous prices. Thank you and God bless.♥️
I do miss the days when those records were only $7. 😳 Things have really changed. Thank you and have a great week.
Unfortunately vinyl has become the new ‘Boutique-Pricing’ item! Stand strong, don’t buy high!
Keep ‘em honest Melinda!
Peace! Thank you Michael.😃♥️
Wow! You got the deal of the day!!! 😃 Thank you for the kind words. Take care.
These prices are laughable but unfortunately, someone will probably buy them. Thank you and have a wonderful weekend.
I agree. There are records I took for granted and I wish I had picked them up when they were cheap. Thank you and take care.

Great feature from lovely Melinda.....my local store in Leicester UK is asking £64 for Neil Young's , "Harvest"!!!!!!
Oh wow! 😮
Hey Melinda. Have you been buying any of the Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series reissues? I'm just getting into jazz and they are great sounding for very reasonable prices.
I have bought several of them. It's a great way to build our jazz collections. They sound incredible! 😃♥️
I agree with you about the very high prices for re-issues of old albums. In many cases you can actually find Mint copies of ORIGINAL FIRST PRESSINGS for much less than the cost of modern re-issues. These days, the internet makes it easy to find original copies of almost anything you could want.
I agree. You can buy anything you want for the right price these days. 😃 The reissues at that store were way overpriced. Thank you and take care.
It definitely takes away from the fun. Sadly, some people are paying these prices. Thank you and take care.
Thanks for this great video and yes, I have noticed crazy crazy prices for both new and used records. It's good to know others feel the same way in the vinyl community.
It's a common problem now. We need to be aware and avoid paying too much. Thank you and take care.
Hi Melinda. Do you know how to find out what day or days that Walmart has their big $15 per album sale? Thanks. Anthony
I think starting in November, check out their website every day. Lol. Take care.
@@MelindaMurphy Excellent! Thank you.
Haha! Grim Reaper Records was kind enough to send me the t shirt. 😄 The prices keep going up. ☹️ Thank you and take care.
Crazy!
That's an interesting comparison. Thank you and take care.
If that store is getting those prices for those records, it just goes to show that there's a sucker born every minute.
Unfortunately, I think you are right. 🤔 Thank you and take care.
You look good Melinda, like the t-shirt with the open shirt. And love the background.
Thanks so much! 😃♥️
Hi Melinda
Wow those prices are crazy! The Queen record I picked up at walmart a few years back was around 32 dollars 2 record set.
Boy I hope like you said people aren't spending all that money . Thanks for sharing. Big hug for Lucy!🙂❤
I gave Lucy a hug for you.♥️ I hope that Queen album is still sitting there. That was a crazy price. Thank you and take care.
Thank you and take care.
love your vids :) ....i agree - its getting crazy how much they're charging
Thank you so much! Have a great week. 😃
I've been wondering when you are going to release the Mofi video to your channel. Is that still going to happen?
I do plan on it and hopefully it can be soon. Thank you and take care.
@@MelindaMurphy thanks for the reply! Hope all is going well. Looking forward to it!
Oh wow! What you said is shocking. I thought the pressing plants were catching up with the demand. Crazy!!! Thank you for the info. Take care.
Hey Melinda! I've watched a few of your videos. I'm curious, are you in Tennessee? And, regarding this video, is this store one of about a half a dozen stores in the Southeast?
I'm around the Tennessee area and it is a chain store. ♥️🤗 Thank you and take care.
The prices are crazy and the price stickers on the covers are very annoying. Thankfully, they usually come off pretty easily. Thank you and take care.
Thank you! I agree that these prices are so crazy that it seems like someone that priced the records didn't' know what they're doing. Take care.
Another great video. Love your videos.
Thanks so much!♥️
Keep buying and nothing will change but higher prices. The warps in records are getting worse while the prices keep going up.
Unfortunately, you make a good point. I do think the pressing plants are trying to improve the quality. I hope that continues. Thank you! 😃
Thank you for the kind words. I appreciate your input and I agree. Take care.
McKay's prices can be crazy but I still can find some cool deals there. Thank you and take care.
Take care.
I don't really want to see vinyl die off either. Thank you and take care.
Cheers!
I enjoy those cheaper bins. That's fun. I agree that records that aren't even in good condition are getting pricey.😳 Thank you and take care.
I just moved to Colorado recently, and I've found some crazy prices of items I bought for cheap a few years ago.
That's probably true. I must say that Colorado is an awesome place to find some very cool records.♥️ Thank you and take care.
Haha! That's crazy but getting more common. 🤗 Take care.
Good video.
Mutual Attraction $20 - $25 at Walmart.
M Jackson - find many for $5 or less, VG
LedZeppelin, Beatles, Queen- wait for WalMart back Friday - $15 each
Footloose - pass
The Mutual Attraction records are very good. Thank you and take care.
You got a great deal on that Led Zeppelin record. Thank you for the kind words. 😃♥️ Take care.
I think you're right. Some people have no idea how to price records. 🤔 Thank you and take care.
This is true. 😳 Thank you! The Impulse records are great.
Was the Led Zeppelin’s the special 2 disc version? Those are pricey
No. This one was a single disc. ☹️
Store should be called, "Overpriced vinyl & Jive". Geez....😳
Haha! Definitely!
I love you keep showing McKay's 😂 there's another place in Tennessee that is worse than them and they're in Lebanon, about 20 minutes east of Nashville. They were a flea market turned into a vinyl store that still has flea market items. They do Facebook sales and the prices for common stuff are insane.
I wonder if I have been there? 🤔 I will definitely keep that in mind. Thank you and have a great weekend.
Someone in the Nashville group posted ac/dc back in black from McKays for $60!!!
So pleased I have the originals including 1st pressings of most of what you showed, particularly Led Zeppelin II and MJ Thriller, Queen etc - I think back in the day I paid less than or around £5 (UK) at the time
Sweet! 😍 Good for you!
Totally agree. Several titles I would have bought on vinyl, I've bought on CD instead. Can't justify the absurd prices on most vinyl now.
mate i went to an hmv store in carlisle back in 09 recall even then surprised high prices before vinly went up so high good selection of cds also but got a few comps a q maybe folk for 5 pounds each budget rack because some parts of the dales you cant get bbc on the radio high vinly then so yeh you mates today really big pounds same here now greetings from virginia ps new cds were quite high also meant to say at least the pints in dales just a 2pound coin haha
I'm sorry! It is disappointing but at least you didn't overpay for a record. Hopefully, they will adjust their prices if enough people are like you. Thank you and take care.
Price are getting out of control .I’m live in Australia and a retail chain sell Taylor swift albums between $80 - $110 which is madness 😮
Yikes. 😳 That's crazy!
Ha! I go to McKays too and they have no idea how to prove records. That said, this also means for every 10 or so crazily overpriced records you find something they have underpriced. Overall, it’s a frustrating experience and I feel terrible for anyone paying those prices. But I usually walk out of there with something surprising.
I agree. I avoid the common overpriced records and find great gems at fair prices. 🤗♥️ Thank you and take care.
I need that Little River Band record. I love them. ♥️ Thank you and take care.
That Natalie Cole was impossible to find new in 91. In USA anyway. I got the CD instead, and just got a reissue a few years ago
@@dawnpatrol700 I was so excited. I couldn't believe my eyes. I got the pink reissue also but this original sounds so much better.
Thank you for the video. I will try not to spend too much money on a record.
I am visiting Seattle tomorrow to attend a concert. I plan to stop at a record store there.
I don't know what thier prices are like. This video is a timely reminder to not over spend.
I hope you do find something special. Have a wonderful time. 🥰
Back when the song Rise was out, my father used to use the beginning of that song for his into for his shift on a local radio station.
I remember hearing it when television stations were showing the weather. I love that song. ♥️ You have a great memory of it. Thank you!
Are those Impulse Records over your right shoulder?
Yes, they are. 🥰 Good eye!
I'm sure either way you go will be fine. 🥰 Thank you and take care.
I bought very many vinyl records before digital came around. The prices were affordable. Now greed is the driving force behind everything and putting people off experiencing the beauty of music on records and tapes. Very sad. Your videos are always good. Cheers
The demand is also part of it. Collecting vinyl is finally cool again and the demand is huge now. Thank you and take care.
I was in a r3cord store yesterday and saw Taco’s Putting On The Ritz album for $25. Saaaaay whaaaat? On the podcast I do our Sunday show was about high prices we have found especially in antique stores. We continue that discussion this week on new vinyl. So many record stores have opened around MI and the prices are really nuts in some of them
I can't believe that Taco album is that expensive. 😄 Crazy! Thanks Steve!
Great video. 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
Thank you! 😃♥️
Funny, I just started watching your videos and just a bit into this one I was thinking “that sounds like what McKays does”. Then I saw the stickers…
Their pricing is all over the place on everything else they carry but the vinyl pricing is unilaterally awful.
It's getting harder to find bargains for sure. Thank you and take care.
Hi Melinda…shops in Cambridge u.k. still sell the new Jimmy Page Led Zep II for £20 to £25
That's good. That's the way it should be. Thank you and take care.
I just bought fleetwood mac the dance brand new on vinyl for 31 dollars..is that a good price
That is a good price.🤩
I remember when I started buying records again in 2013 started that years RSD and prices were way cheaper, prices are too darn high so I am very selective nowadays and hardly buy vinyls anymore.. it was more fun buying and collecting back then now it’s ruined. And I was so happy that vinyl was starting to make a comeback and here it is but it’s breaking the bank.
It makes me so sad to hear that. 🥺Everything has gotten so expensive and it's squeezing all of us. Thank you and best wishes to you.
I just got a few records at a local store also, got the Randy Rhoades tribute album, blue font
Wow! The Randy Rhodes tribute album is a tough one to find. Congrats!
Hold on to your original Zep albums! They are very hard to find in record stores, and even more, in playable condition when you do find them.
I know. The Led Zeppelin albums are hard to come by these days. Thank you and take care.
I used to get most of my vinyl at trash and treasurer at 7 am for no more than 5 bucks but hey times must have changed
They sure have. 🙂
I haven't looked on Ebay for a long time. Thanks for the warning. Lol. Take care.

I have recently noticed , in my area , even some Thrift Stores are raising their prices but at least they aren't CRAZY HIGH....yet anyway.
I agree. The Goodwill stores have started selling records online as well. Crazy!
In my country Argentina, now you can get the Led Zeppelin II album in a new vinyl edition for 13 dollars. Also Queen's double album, Greatest Hits, new vinyl edition for 36 dollars. For the same price, Physical Graffiti, Led Zeppelin's double album.
I'm glad they are so affordable.♥️ Thank you and take care.
The Mck*ys in Chattanooga has gotten pretty rough bit I havent seen prices like that here. Some are definitely higher than I would pay. Bostons self titled for example, every time I see it there (which is often) is always priced waaay to high. And I see a copy of it every time I go in. Great video!
They do overprice the popular titles. It's pretty crazy. Lol. Thank you and take care.
