5:36 apparently a big part of this has to do with RE7’s player engagement stats showing it was way too scary for some people, on top of the devs feeling that 7’s constant tension style horror wore off because you just got used to it and they wanted more “highs and lows” style of design. So a big part of 8 is literally about putting the clown shoes on, in Japan there are really goofy ads for the game with muppets of the boss’ going “the games not scary guys look yahooo woohoo”.
I feel its a good return to form for the RE series, a good balance of lgitimate horror and the traditiona RE goofiness. RE7 was good for the horror but suffered from a small number of boss battles and an even smaller pool of enemies, which made you more prepared and less caught off guardthan in previous games where just as you're getting used to things BAM new enemy to make you question everything.
Ethan is also the only RE character I've seen that actually shoots the villain while they're in front of them and not a monster, he's great. also the fact that they do their "RE transformation, shaking and turning into goo" and Ethan just goes: "What the fucks wrong with you?"
Chris and Sheva watch as Excella inches towards the exit with deadly viruses and do nothing. A villain begins to speak and Ethan caps them. It never sticks, but props for trying.
I'm was hoping Pat was gonna mention the weird 80 page report from Zoe that is only available to the deluxe version of Village that has explains what happen between 7 and 8
By Resident Evil X he'll start the game as a frozen corpse before being sent into space and reconstructed by nano machines along with a BOW. In the end he'll find one of the dinosaurs from Dino Crisis 3 and ride it into deep space
If only the band was still together. I can only imagine a playthrough with Matt marking out while Pat angrily begged him to stop every time one of the witches turned to bees.
RE VII was grounded and serious?! Ethan and Jack have a chainsaw duel in the basement. A CHAINSAW DUEL. I could not control my laughter during that fight; it was so amazingly dumb. Great game, though.
I really don't get the whole "Ethan doesn't feel like the protagonist of his story" impression. I mean his story is getting his daughter back, so he's going around killing the bosses to get his daughter back piece by piece. The story is very much his, he's actively going after bosses, Chris' is pretty much in the background for most of the game. The only thing he does that affects things before you play as him is blowing up Heisenberg's factory in the middle of his fight with Ethan. Ethan gets the boss fights, the boss dialogues, the heroic second wind scene, the final battle, etc. So when people say he doesn't feel like the protagonist of the story, I really don't get it.
I feel the Ethan hate is mostly cause he barely has a personality or that many lines at all really. Feels more like a series of wacky events happening to a dude than a character in a story.
@@largetea8475 ehhh that's more RE7 really, he gets a bit more personality here in his love for his daughter and wife, his anger towards chris, his desperation to save ANYONE in the opening act and his rage against the villains who BRUTALISED his daughter

No that's completely different and Pat even mentions it when it happened on stream. BIG BOSS shows up at the very end of the credits, and the credit IS the stinger.
24:40 Well, given how that you sell the crystalized remains of the vampire ladies to the duke, there is the lore possibility of them getting revived from those.

idk what people are talking about, I loved Ethan. He's a perfect lovable dork Capcom character and he becomes a genuine badass by the end of the game lol.
Ethan's grown on me. I hated him in 7 because how poorly he was handled gave us a character who felt less like a character and more like a template. He comes into his own like nobody's business in Village tho. Pat's descriptions of him are spot on.
He's pretty badass by the end of 7. Pat mentions his comebacks are always terrible which was generally true in 7 too. But his remark to Evelyn when he shows her the toxin at the end was badass. "I'm not playing." And you can see the utter terror on Evie's face lol.

The way they set everything up makes the newer RE Characters like they're about to Smoking Sexy Style combo the B.O.W.s in the future installments. Sherry Birkin, Jake Muller, Alex Wesker and [REDACTED] are all mutated by any and all BioSlime Magic of Resident Evil.
I watched Pat's stream archive and this is probably my favorite RE, they combine a little bit of everything. The more serious horror of RE7, the corny over the top RE5 full action boulder punching with RE4 kind of flow. To some extent it might seems they don't know what kind of game they want to make but, at least to watch, it is great. Ethan is also great, unlikable corny punching bag but it works with the scrublords he's fighting. I also love the amount of asspull they keep on pulling to explain stuff and why this and this happens in the game and trilogy, that's how I like RE, there's enough super serious super scary horror games now.

Melee combat is a blast, shooting is solid and story is the batshit stupid I like in RE. Mercenaries in 6 is fantastic. So fun. And yeah I like Jake, a lot more than I thought hearing the character concept. I like the idea of a good guy Wesker. I like how it gives Chris a bit more depth by having him utterly hate Ada (technically Carla). It's off putting seeing Chris lose his shit when he sees her, in a good way. And some fun tension between and Leon when they meet. And they made Sherry into such a badass. And they actually didnt forget she was injected with Devil and has regenerative abilities. 6:26 No. He's a tough old man who makes a living by wrestling and capturing swamp gators. NOT "because he's old" Pat. 11:48 It's LITERALLY called "The Giant's Chalice"
I don’t understand how anyone could dislike Dad-Joking, unstoppable will Ethan Winters. What other RE protagonist could just soldier on absent their entire heart because they need to save their daughter?
As far as "bad boat sections", I feel Revelations 1 is actually the exception to the rule. Rev1 is pretty good when you're on the boat, and absolutely ~terrible~ when you're anywhere but on the boat. Also, End of Zoe had a section on an abandoned riverboat that ended with you pile driving a swamp man in a flaming arena, and that alone makes up for every other bad boat section put together.
RE7 boat section wasnt very good but I dont think it's as bad as Pat says. Also dunno what hes going on about with the RE5 ship. First half of the first ship chapter is pretty fun. Second half where you go inside and it gets very "clunky Gears of War" with Majini with rifles sucks though. Then you get a fun boss fight with Ouroboros monster. And I actually really enjoy the section before Wesker fight where you have to open the bulkheads. Nah worst part of 5 is the ruins level with it's weird light puzzle. Really hate that section. He's right about the village in 5 though. First chapter of 5 is surprisingly tense, especially on hard.
Its heavily implied in 7 that Ethan is infected with the mold too, which is why hes so durable. I dunno if 8 confirms this or not though, I've not played it yet.
Spoilers ahead so read at your own risk, if you're wondering how Ethan survives all the crap that gets thrown his way.... He didn't. When Jack introduced Ethan into the family back in RE7 he accidentally hit Ethan too hard and straight up killed him. Then the mold reconstituted him and his force of will was so strong he managed to come back as basically himself, with some boosted healing which explains why he's able to keep himself going through the abuse he suffered.
I haven’t finished watching Pat’s play through of Village yet, but from what I’ve heard one of the few complaints ppl have story wise is that apparently a lot of the bosses are so charming/cool, they could’ve been expanded on a lot more. I’ve even seen a few ppl say they hope the dude w/ the hammer comes back for another game. Cool achievement if that’s the case.
Yeah the feeling is mutual I really wanted to be afraid of the 2nd lord more. The way she was introduced had me like "Oh she's going to be a great chatterbox." And after being stunned for the first half of the segment. It was practically over.

Peoplesay Heisenberg having magneto powers means RE has magic meanwhile Wesker got superspeed and matrix dodging powers and Alexia Ashford can striaght up set things on fire with her fucking mind. Superpowers have kinda been a THING in RE for a WHILE.
It's interesting that they mention Devil May Cry so much, since I've always had the theory that Devil May Cry is just the distant future of Resident Evil.
You know what really burns me up about it not being as "scary" as RE 7 is, they supposedly listened to people complaining that RE 7 was TOO scary, and dialed it back most of the game this time. Really, people complaining that a horror game was TOO scary?! Come on, that's like going to a water park and complaining that the water was too fucking wet!
I don't know why Pat's so hung up on this being outta left field for RE, nothing in Village has been any stranger than what's been already seen in Resident evil. Like, what's a person controlling magnetism compared to a guy with a literal lightning gun in their arm
This is a spoiler about one liners . . . . . Ethan's only good one-liner in the game is when you deliver the last shot to Heisenberg, where he says "your funeral" because Heisenberg said it to Ethan at the beginning of the factory part. The rest are weapons-grade terrible.
I think a lot of problems with Ethan is entirely down to "How dare this guy defend himself from these sexy vampire ladies!" Listen, guys, Ethan was just trying to live his life. He didn't start shit.
7 was not a overly serious game, it just managed the balance between horror and cheese properly. One minute you’re hiding from jack in fear without defensive options, the next he’s Tokyo drifting around in a garage. You get stalked by him again in a tense section collecting key items, then you have a big dumb awesome chainsaw fight. I feel like this is totally lost on 8 and it’s the questionable humor from 4/5/6 on steroids.
At the same time though, this game isn't trying to be as scary as 7 was, although it does have its good moments. Like when vampire lady cuts his fucking hand off, and you don't even realize what happened until it's already detached from his goddamn limb. I respect that they're willing to embrace the 4 energy again while still having some genuinely freaky moments. Because damnit, do I LOVE 4's energy.

Ethans great precisely because he's a boring, Average Joe schlubby goober. It's funny comparing him to Chris after I just finished replaying RE5, since Chris in 5 is basically a superhero lol. Not that I mind that, I love Man of Steel Chris lol. But its really fun to have an everyday dummy be the hero in a series as batshit as Resident Evil.
Spoilers Funny you can actually compare chris and ethan in Re8 directly cause you take direct control of him in Re8 for a section and he like he does in Re5 just moes down several dozens of lycans with ease unlike ethan who has trouble with just a few of them for the majority of the game cause chris redfield is the big military action hero while ethan is just a "regular" dude.
I’m glad pat mentioned the thing about the RE4 prototypes because I got that same vibe from my first run. With all the weird and new ideas it almost felt like a new IP but they built in elements from RE to make it sell better. Not that it’s a bad thing since they incorporate the RE elements into the “supernatural” world well.

I love Woolie's facial reactions to RE8
Ethan really does rule. Just because he's the Outbreak character we never had.
Speaking of Outbreak, have you tried out the resurrected online mode?
Ethan is also the only RE character I've seen that actually shoots the villain while they're in front of them and not a monster, he's great.
also the fact that they do their "RE transformation, shaking and turning into goo" and Ethan just goes: "What the fucks wrong with you?"

Chris kept demanding that Ethan stay out of his way, but Ethan is doing literally ALL of the heavy lifting
It's the fact that he has no face... Like literally that's the reason.
Having played the game myself already, I was so excited to hear Pat talk to Woolie about it that I caught the stream live for the first time ever and I was not disappointed.
I can't believe neither of them brought up BIG BOSS as the credits spoiling the post credits scene
See that's a little different because it's the very last credit they show and then as soon as they show it he shows up so it's meant to be oh by the way that you never saw this coming
No that's completely different and Pat even mentions it when it happened on stream. BIG BOSS shows up at the very end of the credits, and the credit IS the stinger.
seeing as they were talking about spoilers, isn't NOT saying it THE POINT?
That's completely different
24:40 Well, given how that you sell the crystalized remains of the vampire ladies to the duke, there is the lore possibility of them getting revived from those.
Oh, I like that.
hell, you sell the duke the remains of NOT ONLY those vampire ladies but ALL the bosses aside from the final one AND the remans of the lycans and other enemies
idk what people are talking about, I loved Ethan.
"I'm not playing."
And you can see the utter terror on Evie's face lol.

I beat the game last night and not only is it a masterpiece of the Resident Evil franchise with a lot of heart and soul behind it, it's also just a great game, period.
Now I want woolie to play re7 and re8 with Pat as a guest

And yeah I like Jake, a lot more than I thought hearing the character concept. I like the idea of a good guy Wesker.
I like how it gives Chris a bit more depth by having him utterly hate Ada (technically Carla). It's off putting seeing Chris lose his shit when he sees her, in a good way. And some fun tension between and Leon when they meet.

Completely random, but I feel like Revelations could have benefitted from more mutated fish as far as enemy variety goes.
Woolie is looking magnificent
Man Ethan almost shows Deadpool levels of damage recovery, honestly that's the most goofy parts of RE7 and 8 to me. Chopped off arm? No problem!
Its heavily implied in 7 that Ethan is infected with the mold too, which is why hes so durable.
I dunno if 8 confirms this or not though, I've not played it yet.
@@JillLulamoon Well his *daughter* has total immortality as her bio stand, so it should have come from somewhere.

@@SunfishV yeah she barely gets any screentime and her one direct interaction with Ethan is for her lame excuse of a boss fight. They could've done SO much more with her than they did. Even MOREU gets more than her.

The original RE 4 ended up being DMC, it's not surprising that the 2 are close
ackchyually, gun survivor 3 was dino stalker. pat is thinking of gun survivor 4 aka dead aim, the resident evil game he is too cowardly to play.
If this game gets as wacky as I've heard, it certainly diminishes the fears that a potential (inevitable?) RE4 remake would lose its charm.
i say it has a good balance of horror action and RE wackiness
You know what really burns me up about it not being as "scary" as RE 7 is, they supposedly listened to people complaining that RE 7 was TOO scary, and dialed it back most of the game this time. Ethan's only good one-liner in the game is when you deliver the last shot to Heisenberg, where he says "your funeral" because Heisenberg said it to Ethan at the beginning of the factory part.
The rest are weapons-grade terrible.
I think a lot of problems with Ethan is entirely down to "How dare this guy defend himself from these sexy vampire ladies!"
Listen, guys, Ethan was just trying to live his life. He didn't start shit.
Is Ethan Ichiban Kasuga?
Also cool that Resident Evil managed to make a villain character that is both Scarecrow and The Ventriloquist
Ichiban has a lot more natural charisma than Ethan though.
Can't believe Pat didn't tell Woolie about the Catholic Magnum

Funny you can actually compare chris and ethan in Re8 directly cause you take direct control of him in Re8 for a section and he like he does in Re5 just moes down several dozens of lycans with ease unlike ethan who has trouble with just a few of them for the majority of the game cause chris redfield is the big military action hero while ethan is just a "regular" dude.
