      Flame of Udun I've always thought of him as Namco' Sonic Mascot.
      It's kinda crazy because Adventure 2 came out the same year and they were both rocking a board.

    Personally, as someone who grew up with Klonoa 1 and only recently played the second one a year and a half ago, I actually prefer the second game.
    I love the first game and all, but I just kinda feel the characters in the second game had a bit more substance to them. Plus I absolutely love the symbolism and overarching themes in the game that slowly make more and more sense as you get closer to the end. I don't really want to spoil what happens in the end, but it all really resonated with me.
    Also, in terms of the music, I thought it was equally amazing, but for kinda different reasons. It felt a bit more... melancholy overall. Which is kinda fitting for this game.
    It's all subjective though.
    Also, it's pronounced "vay-el" like "wedding veil". :P

      Don't play this game on the PS3, even the PS3 with backwards compatibility - it will ALWAYS freeze on the Ark level. It has to be on PS2. I'm sorry, it's sad, it works fine up until that point, but when it comes to the switches that you have to use to make the elevators go up and down, the PS3 just can't do them for some reason. I'm sorry. V_V

      This was a wonderful review! I was so enthralled that I even found myself pausing the video periodically to "debate" your points and opinions with my own thoughts on Klonoa 2! I honestly prefer the sequel over the first game for a wide variety of reasons, but I think both games are irreplaceable treasures that deserve so much more attention. Thank you very much for this video! It was a ton of fun to watch.
      P.S. - As a final note, my own copy of Klonoa 2 has never frozen on me! I've had that disc for over a decade now, and it still works just as well as it did back then. Maybe you got a poor copy? Not your fault at all, just an unfortunate setback.

    I feel that a big part of your criticism for the second game comes from your nostalgia of the first. I played the second game first (years ago) and then tried the first one much later, and felt the opposite to you. I preferred 2's graphics, music, gameplay etc, and I also would place that mostly on nostalgia. Regardless, it's great to see this game still get coverage! :)

    I wish Nintendo had chosen to port this instead of K1: it's much more suited for their consoles. (Hopefully in near future? Kirby's Return to Dreamland gave me speculation with its soundtrack).
    If I could just add a counterpoint to why K2 is slightly better than 1: the message. It can be assumed it's Klonoa facing growth and accepting grief (sorrow) as a natural emotion rather stay in oblivious existence (tranquil, joyful, discord, indecision). It probably explores Klonoa's acceptance of his role and can move forward with his unconscious grief over losing Phantomile.

    Veil is an english word, you KNOW how to pronounce it.
    And the music thing is kind of biased. The second game's levels are a bit too open, and less bright. That's why you like them less.

    This was, funnily enough, my FIRST Klonoa game as I found quite cheap secondhand and bought it on a whim (I'd never actually heard of Klonoa then). I thoroughly enjoyed it and then bought the first one, enjoying that one too. I really hope that you do get to finish this game for yourself, as the story towards the end gets pretty good. Personally, I couldn't say which Klonoa game I prefer as I love them both for different reasons.

    They took the PS2 emulation out of the PS3 because they actually had to stick PS2 chips in there to make it work, and taking them out saved money. A lot of people don't realize, but Playstation 1 games still worked on later PS3 models!

    • @pokeguy742
      @pokeguy742 7 лет назад +1

      OneColdMonkey The other reason PS2 emulation was removed was because there were a lot of hardware problems in those old systems. Both the ps3 chips and PS2 chips together made a lot of heat, which meant that over time the solder would crack as the heat dissipated through the chips. This cracking could result in the chips becoming partially or completely disconnected from the rest of the system, which would require costly repairs. It's not unreasonable for this feature to be removed when they had to repair or replace broken systems regularly, and is also why they stopped supporting the older models when they introduced later hardware revisions.

    • @Wandergirl108
      @Wandergirl108 7 лет назад

      Really, they installed PS2 chips to make it work? Then why didn't PS2 games work on the damn things thirty percent of the time????? Like this game, for instance - the bit Rosie mentioned where she quit, that ALWAYS happens, those switches that you use to make the elevators go up and down, for some reason, the backwards-compatible PS3s can handle the switch being flipped once, but not a second time, they just can't do it. Other games are completely UNPLAYABLE because of this, I have PS2 games that I couldn't play on my backwards-compatible PS3 because a trigger for a VERY early-on part of the game just couldn't trigger.

    • @pokeguy742
      @pokeguy742 7 лет назад

      Wandergirl108 The reason that those PS2 games didn't work was because some backwards compatible models didn't have the full hardware set. There were models that had the PS3 processor and both PS2 processors, and then there were some that had the PS3 processor and only one of the PS2 processors, but were given a software emulator embedded in the firmware to compensate for the missing hardware. Unfortunately, the software emulation didn't work at all for some 10-20% of all PS2 titles, and some games ran incorrectly or produced glitches that weren't present on original PS2s. The software emulation was used after Sony realized that full hardware compatibility was digging into their profit per unit, but backwards compatability was later removed entirely to further reduce production costs.

    • @Wandergirl108
      @Wandergirl108 7 лет назад

      Huh. Fascinating. Is there some way to get the hardware installed on a console that lacks it? Because I don't want to change out my PS3, she and I have been through a lot together, but I would like to be able to play ALL my games on her…Though, to be fair, she does mess up PS1 games as well, usually in minor ways but still. V_V

    • @pokeguy742
      @pokeguy742 7 лет назад

      Wandergirl108 Unfortunately, no. Each model is designed with particular hardware in mind, and as such there isn't any way to add or remove things such as processors in the same way you can with traditional desktop computers. All models have embedded hardware, meaning the hardware cannot be removed without technical knowledge and proper equipment. And even if you did meet those requirements, a PS3 model with partial emulation doesn't physically have a connector for the second PS2 processor. On top of that, models featuring full hardware emulation are very rare to find in working condition due to the heat dissipation problem mentioned earlier. The cheapest option is to find one that's broken and try sending it to a repair service, though with that method you'll spend more on the service than the console itself, setting you back $100 easily. The cheapest and easiest option is to simply get a PS2.

    Well see that freezing problem; exactly the reason why Sony gave up on BC PS3's the emulation is really unreliable and games just dont work allot of the times.
    PLUS Europe only ever got the worse BC model the one that does software based emulation, there is another one that does hardware based emulation and it's much more reliable tho still not as good as an actual PS2.

  • @Wandergirl108
    @Wandergirl108 7 лет назад

    This game was actually my introduction to Klonoa, I didn't even SEE the first game until many years later. Same with Tomba (or Tombi), the sequel was the one I knew, I didn't really encounter the original until many years later. Both thanks to your brother, actually! Also, Klonoa is not FROM the dream world, he's from another world entirely and goes to the worlds of these games IN HIS DREAMS, why is this so hard for people to understand! DX Honestly, the sequel's ending made that VERY clear, after the credits you wake up and see the ring on your bedside, the sun is shining and birds are singing meaning you have awoken from the dream of Lunatea.
    Also, funnily enough, I feel the exact opposite of the way you do when it comes to the level design, the visuals, and especially the music. This is far superior to the first in my opinion. Probably because this is the one I played as a kid, not the first game… :P

  • @challengerjakku1943
    @challengerjakku1943 6 лет назад

    Whilst its a direct sequel I feel that Klonoa 2 does a good job of setting it self up within the world of Lunatea, instead of using the story of the first game as a crutch. Whilst it does help to play the first game, the opening is ambiguous enough to the point that playing the first game really isn't that necessary. I got Klonoa 2 for my 7th birthday as a kid and that was my introduction to the series, but never felt lost as the game did very well in setting the plot within the world it resided in, as opposed to something like Kingdom hearts 2 where you are expected to know essential plot points from previous installments in order to truly understand the bigger picture of the games overall story.
    It works well for this series though as Klonoa is merely an observer of these worlds he goes there and solves the problems within the worlds but hes never truly apart of them, as they are simply just stops in his journey. It allows the series to keep the stories of each game self contained within its own game and worlds with there own set of unique and colourful characters, instead of leaking out into sequels, sure it helps to know information from prior games like Klonoa being from a dream world but its never required. It gives the player the ability to start with any of the games and understand whats going on, to a point since the GBA games do expect you to play the other games, dream champ tournament comes to mind.

That said I hope you do continue to play the game toward the end because even if you have watched the ending, the levels up to it are absolutely incredible.

    The world won't forget sorrow anymore ;)
    You should really try to continue the story if you haven't already. It's definitely worth it. If I remember correctly, you're at a very pivotal part of it (which is why it's such a long level)... and it's a shame you didn't finish.

    Says "Professor who prophesises" in a smooth take, takes four to say "Leorina."
    Although is prophesises the proper conjugation? I'd go with prophesies, personally

    I'm in the opposite boat. Klonoa 2 was my first game in the series and is the one I will go back to time and time again. As far as games that I played, it has one of the smoothest difficulty curves ever. I love this game so much. The music, the characters, the level design, just... everything ❤️

    The villin in the first one was genuinely about as terrifying as deathtrap dungeon just from how out of place and dark he was in comparison to the rest of the game. Also deathtrap dungeon... My childhood nightmares have resurfaced.
