Just seen Nigel on tv at Goodwood. I can't believe the crash was 29 years ago. I was there and when the screening went around the car I feared the worse for Nigel.
That was nasty. I remember that made the front pages of every newspaper the next day, that's how big it was As for the incident, You can't apportion any blame on anyone, Mansell just got loose out of old hairpin, was slow to recover and Needell just had nowhere to go, you can see he braked hard just to try to avoid Mansell but couldn't avoid hitting him without wrecking himself
I was there on that corner. 60,000 attendance mainly to see Nigel. All day they were dissing him on the tannoy (the btcc were out for him big style) as ever NM drove beyond expectations in an unfamiliar car.. absolutely kicked ass. Anyone thinking it’s clever to type bollox about his achievements that day and any other days is just sad. Ll leone
Singer/Guitarist Chris Rea as also in this race in a BMW although it was Mansell on the road to hell!!! Massive smash....the commentators were David Addison (now doing commentary on the BTCC on ITV) and 89 and 95 champ John Cleland. Mansells grunting noisily as those cars had no power steering in those days (as Cleland states in the commentary), and were quite physical to drive. Mansell had huge upper body strength - Adalaide 86 proves that when he wrestled with his car after his famous 200mph tyre explosion - but the muscles used to drive a single seater, ie: F1/Indycar, are vary different from those used to drive a Touring Car. The speed of impact was probably between 60 and 80mph, and quite slow compared to some accidents, BUT he struck solid, old style, bridge that provided no "give" and did nothing to absorb the energy. The Mondeo was destroyed and the drivers head came out of the window and possibly even hit the wall. As a result it became compulsory for all drivers in pro level race cars to have a special "net" over the drivers door window to prevent an arm or head leaving the vehicle in an accident.
marky mark cleland's vauxhall had power steering as did Sopers BMW. A lot of the others had power steering but either being a traditionalist or wanting to save weight Andy Rouse never used power steering. His Toyota carinas never had it and neither did his ford mondeo. I actually think the crash between rouse and hoy was partially caused by the steering for the way the car naturally reacts when it goes over bumps
No net. No 3-sided headrest. No HANS device. And the way he instinctively moves his head to the left would have only increased the opportunity for his head to pick up momentum as it was thrown to the right, towards the wall, on impact. A miracle he wasn't killed.
@@jd.r awesome, looked for my bit at my dads house and couldn't find it.. Also remember seeing a pair of Marshall's in the car park afterwards struggling to get most of the mondeos bumper in a mini!
All entirely Nigel’s fault. WAY over the limit into the Old Hairpin- as he’d done previously. He was heading onto the grass at 100mph+ in any case. Tiff really had nowhere to go as the Mondeo speared across the track….
I remember watching this at the time and thought Mansell was a bit of a prima donna and blaming Tiff when Mansell was out of control. As Casey Stoner once said to Valentino Rossi " your ambition outweighs your talent"
You mean "...until he cut across Tif's path, clipped his nose, and spun out of control", right? He was out of control before the previous turn. If you look closely, you can see Tiff's front wheels lock in an attempt to avoid hitting Mansell.
Even in those days it seems nonsensical to not have a single row of tyres covering that sharp edge. Mansell was pretty unlucky to find that exact spot for sure.
Nigel Mansell handling an extremely powerful F1 car, no problem at all! Nigel Mansell handling an extremely powerful Indycar, no problem at all! Nigel Mansell handling a ford Mondeo, ahh yes slight problem here 🤣🤣🤣
Correction, he was sent into a much sharper angle and into the wall after HE clipped Tiff's nose. Look at 0:20 to 0:25 . Clearly shows the impact of Mansell's car shoving Tiff's onto the grass. Hope to god you don't work as an accident investigator for the police. Open your damn eyes, man. I'm done here.
I was there that day! I was 6 years old but i remember standing 100 metres further up the track on the inside of the circuit and thinking to myself. "That crash was awesome!"
dude i was thinking the same thing. imagine the awe full sounds drivers make when they have crashed and died before.I know when i have been hurt very bad before, i make some weird grunts i cant help it when you cant breath in agony and pain.
Most drivers do this, but is rarely picked up because of the helmet in the way. Think logically, if you were about to slam into a wall at over 100mph in a car, I think you'd make a noise too. Most people would scream their heads off lol.
0:24 - no - the front of mansell's car had already veered right back across the track onto the grass by the time needell hit him - all that shunt did was change the angle at which mansell veered off the track completely - i remember at the time needell being unfairly blamed.
By saying that, Widow Twankey, you seem to be implying that Mansell was a bit of a whinger when, in actual fact, he was quite a calm and reflective person. Plus in any case, I think if I'd crashed into a concrete stanchion at high speed and then been knocked unconscious I might feel entitled to have a bit of a grumble about it.
well he blamed tiff needell for the accident! (who wasn't impressed). needell was only ever in 1 f1 race (belgium 1980) - i found the whole race on youtube (with a german commentary though) and sent it to him on twitter - he responded with a smile emoji! i don't think he had ever seen it all on tv (though i think his engine blew after about 35 laps!)
Yeah, Tiff could just disappear? Okay he could have anticipated and slowed but didn't think Mansell would veer to the left all of a sudden... he braked so hard the car locked up.. please watch footage again.
MagicAyrtonforever dunno he was still charging hard, could of backed out of the throttle to give him self a chance to avoid it,. the bmw managed to avoid him,. its 6 of one and half a dozen of the other,.
+bob adams are you kidding, it was basically impossible for him to do any more, there s no way he could have predicted Mansell cutting back on the inside again, racing incident was all it was!
No way was Tiff at fault in this accident, Mansell was pushing really hard and was already out of control and heading back across the track when Needell hit him. He had no time to react at all. I was stood right there on the infield at the time, It was a big one for sure. I was a huge Mansell fan but I was disappointed when he tried to put the blame on Tiff afterwards.
Wow, that was the first time I've heard driver audio like that... very chilling and scary. Glad he made a full recovery.

Needel was a chippy talentless twat. Mansell a personality nightmare but Needell by his own admission helped him on his way to the barriers.

I actually have a bit of that car.
You have to look at track safty, WTF.... why was they concrete wall and sharp edge left exposed without a barrier.
Keep in mind this is the 90’s

it looke dto me like hed got it under some control till tiff gave him a nudge
I would absolutely say that nigel’s mustache is the greatest mustache in F-1 history
Yea that was a big one!
He was pushing too hard that’s why he got very sideways
Too hard??? Ok they're "Sunday drivers" but a bit of different league...💪
Definitely not Tiffany Dell's fault.

I was in the crowd :) was worrying to watch
Me too. I wasn't stood near the crash. But when the recovery truck went past with a destroyed Mondeo on it (under tarp) it went very quiet.
That was not 120 mph but a big crash either way.
Yeah 120 seems a bit much, maybe when the rear stepped out he was doing 120?
+RetroAdzz Maybe doing 120 down the stretch before braking and losing it in the turn. But he wasn't going anywhere near 120 when he hit the wall.
