I’m a massive Mansell fan, but I think your assessment is on the money; Mansell could often be bested by Senna, who was constantly “on it”, and Prost, who was always thinking of the very single way of going faster, smoothly. Senna and Prost were the very best. That Mansell can be spoke of in the same sentence as them tells you he was aaalmost up there with them. No shame in that whatsoever, and it probably marks him out as one of the top five of all time. Given his CART and BTCC exploits though, I’ll always see Mansell as the most “complete” driver, in all categories, up there with Clark and Stewart, if just a shade behind the absolute best in F1.
Alejandro Tum Nope, just the most memorable. Statistically speaking, other drivers performed better than Senna, maybe because they got the chance to have a longer career, maybe not. The point is though, Senna put on a better show every race, he wasn't a boring driver, and people genuinely liked him for his talents on the track, and his care off the track. As for my favourite, I'm a Jim Clark person, maybe because classic Lotus F1 cars are just the most attractive things ever.
always will be the best british driver ever born the only rookie and brit EVER to win the indy car series and still not beaten even by a rookie of any nationality...... make me proud to be british. #bestintheworld #RULEBRITTANIA
Pause at 3:36 and frame advance with > . Perfect line, inches from getting off track and probably losing grip. The corner before was cut maybe a little too much, but hard to say if he gained time (even if current FIA race directors would imprison him for 5 years for that). Very smooth lines almost every corner, yet at the end it becomes apparent how much he was pushing, true race driver. Didn't care about the grass after Gambon, since the finish line is pretty close, so you don't need to carry speed into a straight.
@@fabiometta1034 I thought about now but Mercedes has one the last 7 constructors championships, Lewis Hamilton is second on the all time win list, and Ferrari hasn't sniffed a drivers or constructors championships since 2008, and there is no Williams at Williams I'm going to wait it out a bit longer.
I was involved in the de Angelis, Mansell, Senna period and can tell you Nigel was a gentleman. He was a fearsome racer and he occasionally broke the JPS Lotus - which was fragile - and that didn't endear him to the Lotus Team Manager at the time (PW). Nor did the fact that Nigel was recruited by Colin Chapman who saw in him a potential world champion. CC of course was correct, but it didn't prevent a war of words and a mutual antipathy that led to Ayrton joining and Nigel moving on. That made sense; together, in the same cars they would have had too many collisions on track. Yes, Ayrton was more than a little wary of Nigel. One of the very few who would push and go wheel to wheel with him. Hard racing days. No 'coasting' and going on an economy run in '80s F1.

Perfect grandfather with fantastic stories to tell.
Just imagine Ayrton Senna here now....
that would of being good to see rivals on track but friends off was a great battle throughout they always put on a good show
Alejandro Tum
Nope, just the most memorable.
Alejandro Tum
Yes, he is

"Senna beat Michael Schumacher and Juan Manuel Fangio"
Alejandro Tum Dude, shut up with your stupid shit.
Shame how his face melted in the sun on the last road trip
Not only is Clarkson entertaining, but he's also a top notch interviewer. Nice!
So at 2:42 the car reg is GX52 HFN then at 3:16 the car reg is GU03 WLC.
always will be the best british driver ever born the only rookie and brit EVER to win the indy car series and still not beaten even by a rookie of any nationality...... make me proud to be british.
He seems like such a chill bloke I can’t believe they would shoot him in the face with an arrow
I adore the way he still throws the around... I would love to see him on the track again.
One of my favorite drivers even though I'm not even born yet.
+Eric Peru When are you going to be born?
Ellemerob sometime in the near future. I just wanna be able to take advantage of flying cars.
+Eric Peru oh right. Are you only around now to warn your mother about the Terminator who will want to prevent your birth.
@@ericperu1542 Are you still looking into the right time to join us?
@@fabiometta1034 I thought about now but Mercedes has one the last 7 constructors championships, Lewis Hamilton is second on the all time win list, and Ferrari hasn't sniffed a drivers or constructors championships since 2008, and there is no Williams at Williams I'm going to wait it out a bit longer.
3:07 the REG Is GX52
3:16 GU03
What did I miss?😂
Seeing this after the grand tour special
anyone notice the number plate change at 3:16 from a 52 plate to a 03 plate
rare footage of Nigel Mansell without a moustache
No 'coasting' and going on an economy run in '80s F1.
he went for it 1000% , love it!
Il più bel giro che abbia mai visto sulla pista di Top Gear
3:15 . Number plate changed ?
Mental Mansell he’s amazing!
I remember him driving in TOCA in the Ford Mondeo wild times!
The blond girl behind Mansell 😍👍💥
Mansell was my childhood hero, not Senna. Great guy and a very strong and crazy racer with a 'never say die' attitude. Love him.
2:37 come on let's go
What a Gentleman and a TRUE LEGEND !!!!
best part is he is just totally NOT up himself.
Jezza should have more respect He`ll never be that fast I think it sticks in his throat a bit..
benolly22 Well said. Jezza pissed me off, how he'd talk over Mansell also. *rolling my eyes here*
The gal over clarkson's shoulder is friggin nice !!!!!😊😊😊😊😊
Best British F1 driver we ever had!!
All those former F1 names Nigel mentioned remember them well from days gone past man I feel old now.
Good video and seeing as people are talking about the crowd... over Jeremy's right shoulder that ginger girl looks very serious =P
Amazing driver and the nicest guy in the world
oh my god he doesn't have a MOUSTACHE
Anyone notice how the registration number changes?
+Robert Davis I didn't until I saw your comment. HFN becomes WLC or something, and back again. Strange.
Yes, but it's only one very brief shot where nothing significant happens - it's the same car all the rest of the way round.
Driving like the lion he always was!
wow!!! what a way to kick off the new year!! great job Top Gear :D
The blonde standing to Mansell's right is tidy.
That is the reason why they have put her on the front row
I remember this lap standing up or near the top for quite some time
And now they kidnapped him, shot an arrow through his head and pushed him down a ski slope in a car that said t*tt**s 'n beers!
