- We take a look at the new 2019 VW Jetta GLI Autobahn edition. While the name is confusing the concept is simple, make a fun affordable sedan that is still enjoyable to drive. Competition is slowing down in the Sedan market, however, choices are vast. Honda has the Accord Sport, Civic SI, Nissan has the Altima and at $30,000 you can throw the Toyota Camry and Mazda6 into the mix. What is the best option for the price range and what makes the Jetta different? Watch and find out.

Mr. Geese, I'm writing directly to you. I can firsthand appreciate the level of effort you put into your videos. The dry humor. The wit. The passion and production value combined into an informative entertaining package assembled by a man who truly knows his shit. Thank you for being you.
Flash Filibuster, totally agree. He is very unique in a very good way. I also think he is literally the only one I’ve seen do the undercarriage.
Is that you Mark ?
Ditto Flash! His humor is something that keeps me coming back!
@jonny j that was humor Jonny .
Flash Filibuster totally agree! Savagegeese does detail like no one else and it’s top class!
One of the biggest factors in enjoying an audio system is low road noise. You should db meter for NVH in your reviews.
Huge thanks to VW for keeping the manual transmission. This is a solid daily driver with a bit of tuning and aftermarket potential.
I got a 2013.5 GLI AUTOBAHN. I love it.
If you modified this car you’ll destroy it
@@chocolatewheelchair You could not be more wrong. Same engine as the very tunable GTI. My 17 GTI is putting down 400hp with the golf r turbo swap. Please do some research before spouting out untruths.
dean marriott um you have no idea what you’re talking about. VW is along with FIAT the least reliable cars sold in the USA.
dean marriott you have no warranty hahaha
Agree Mr. Goose. Between this and the Accord? An LSD is crucial. And that Beats audio... no comment. But nothing else matters really, because that sloth t-shirt is everything.
and with civic si it should be more like a gli as accord? accord is more passat like.
Loved the Throttle House video as well. Slothless apparel aside.
Honda engine/trans in the vw chassis....
@@LaFritePerreGoat No but the Jetta GLI has a much nicer interior then the Civic, and, is WAY faster.
As an owner of a GTI, I'm comfortable saying there's nothing wrong with the audio system in that vehicle. It just sucks.
I feel like you've hit a sweet spot with the review length. You still cover all the important stuff, without making it 50 minutes long. Not that I don't enjoy the 50 minute videos, I could watch 2 hour ones, but the shorter reviews will be better for the popularity of the channel, and it doesn't feel like we are experiencing a worse quality review. Of course, we'll still want the occasional longer review for special vehicles.
This seems like the perfect modern sedan. Turbo charged, has an lsd, comfortable, roomy, built well, and 40 mpg?? That’s actually insane. Put in some better speakers and this thing can really stand the test of time.
it says 34 mpg in the video
@@ikbendusan He said he got 42 mpg in the video on a 40 mile trip. Pretty safe to assume you can get 40 mpg if he could avg 42 mpg.
@@connorbonstein4048 VWs trip computers show better MPG numbers than real consumption. Measure it yourself and you will see.
I wonder how softly he drove the car in that 40 miles? If I was on a relatively flat highway with a speed limit of 65mph, I could achieve 35-37mpg in my bmw which is rated just about 25mpg highway....
I can confirm a calculated 42 mpg on a 300 mile highway trip at 70 mph with 3 adults and the AC on. Amazing. The on-board computer is actually not off by much.
That intro talk had me laughing, truly savage. You covered this car very well and understood the context of what this VW is. A car that aims for the middle with some red stripes for more power. Can it really be that the Jetta is saving the sedans?
The GLI just made the new Jetta so much better
I would love to have one with 6-speed manual
I enjoy my GLi Mk7. (GTi Large Idea) lol
Go live in mexico then
They make them.
Every trim, a manual is offered.
I have one, and the manual's the way to go. Nothing feels better then pushing that engine out and throwing a gear out of a corner.
It makes my day when I get the notification that a new video is up from you! As a college student, you make my days seem less stressful!
Just picked up my 2021 GLI Autobahn 6MT - pure grey. I love this car!!!!
This is hands down best car review channel i have ever come across, since Top gear stopped making videos i have never been so excited about a car review!thank you!
Hands down, Sg is one of the best auto review channels on RUclips. The humor is spot-on, the level of detail is excellent, and each reviews comes standard with comparisons/contrasts/industry insights superior to other car reviewers. You guys make hard work look easy! Thank you.
Love the detailed review. Especially when you go under the car. No other reviewer does that! I swapped my 2015 Golf for a 2019 GLI a few months ago and absolutely love the car. The Extra trunk space is nice because I can fit all my camera gear in the trunk without folding the seats down like I had to in my golf.
Very glad you’re back! Take care of your health!
Your reviews are amazing. Especially putting each car on a lift, and examining (sometimes ridiculing) the frame, suspension, brakes, driveline and exhaust. Keep up the great work!
Mark, thank you for this review. I am, as of yesterday, the lucky owner of a new 2020 GLI, and I went back and re-watched your video before I went in for a test drive. It really helped!
I guess I like bland styling because I really like the looks of this car, and the GTI and the Golf R.
They're not "bland." They're classic and timeless.
Golf looks good especially gti and r. This looks terribly cheap. The last gen looks way better.
The '19 Jetta is an over-sculpted derivative of the current Ford Fusion and Chrysler 200 - but done in a poor fashion. Then add the hideous Tesla 3 (or Corolla) tail lamp shape. Bash on a 145% outsized Passat grille and ... it is a Big Fail. I now appreciate the previous generation's 'bland styling' for its restraint. DISCLAIMER: I do currently lease a 2019 Jetta S with a 6M trans. Sometimes I regurgitate as I approach the vehicle, but once inside its like a genetically superior designer handled things here, and it makes for a pleasing helm. Gripes? the front windscreen is too small and the lower cowl too high happily A- pillars are mostly unobtrusive. The side lights are too short deferring to the high beltline. Rear glass angle and a high seatback make for near zero visibility aft. Interior plastics seem to melt and crackle at will. The transaxle can be clunky during economical short shifting - though the syncromesh is excellent. Overall It's a definite 3 year lease ONLY when on special, which is too bad as a bit of money thrown at the suspension tires and wheels would make it much more entertaining . Now, have at me - Cheers! Sandy.
@@sandyshoremann7524 Um,.....ok. Take care?
I really like the Golfs, but this one doesn't "have it" for me. It's not ugly, though.
Dirty Mike and the boys can make a mess. It's good if you can clean it up easier
As someone who has this exact configuration, I can appreciate the level you go through for these reviews.
Great to have you back and feisty Mark! Thanks for keeping it going Jack.
I really like the detail you put into this video for the GLI
Keep it up Mr. Geese!
Hopefully getting one of these guys in December! I just became obsessed with it recently so I'm glad you did a review!
I just bought one today, I absolutely love it, the plastic inside comes across as thick and sturdy in my opinion, the beats sound system sounds fine. Everyone bitches about everything so go check one out , don’t just watch this video to decide.
I've got the last gen model. Glad you're finally reviewing one!! Even if it's the new one. Very underrated car I think.
Hahaha I always appreciate the humour and good to k.ow there's still normal people out there
Where?
wow...absolutely solid intro.
not competitive enough to worry dave chappell yet, but funny.
the review? i saw my very first one yesterday in a home depot lot.
i had to walk up to look closer because it was very beautiful looking. i thought it was their newest
arteon.
it was the same highly metallic grey used here.
the is car was very nice looking and as you say, these cars like the newest SUVs VW has presented, all will age to be as modern looking 6 years from today as they do today.
nice review, nice job VW.
Must look remarkably different in person. I'll never see one of these in Australia and I'm quite happy about that, it makes a Golf 7 look like a work of art.
I love that you do the underbody look on the cars you review. Hardly anyone else does this. Subscribing for this reason. A+
Absolutely love all of your reviews sir thank you so much for the detail and work you put into these!!!
It makes me sad every time you say "I`ve spoken too much about it already". I like it when you explain complex tech...
Best regards from the hard plastics fan ;)
I think the GLI looks sensational. The Jetta doesn't have a big mouth and high cheekbones like a Lexu IS or a 3 series, but it's very attractive and in GLI trim it really adds some needed flare to a solid design. Quite a fan of the luxury edition Jettas as well.
First time watching your reviews. And I totally appreciate that you look underneath the car as well! Not like others that just drive and tell you about the interior. Excellent review!
This is the first review that I've found of the Autobahn. Everything was pretty much what i expected except for the audio. The fact that they switched to beats have me a few questions marks. Even though you didn't post the results, you answered a few of those. Gonna stick with my GTI with the fender system for a bit longer now as that is a decent deciding factor for me. Thanks.
The Jetta and Golf are great these days. I love my 2017 mk7 GTI
Yay Mark! Been waiting for your review of my new baby as yours is one of the most technical car channels I watch on RUclips and I really appreciate your opinions. I have had a manual trans Jetta S trim for about 16 months and now a new 35th Anniversary GLI for three months also with the 6 speed and it has been excellent. Honestly I really feel the DCC or adaptive dampeners on my version really does amazing things to keep the body roll in check and in fact in sport mode over dampened for the street a bit even. Comfort mode for every day and normal for the back roads seems to be the sweet spot and I will be reserving sport mode for the autocross track. This is my first time in a FWD performance car that has an LSD installed and it is unbelievable the difference it makes. You can just carve through the hard turns with zero tire skip or screaming. Yes I fully agree on both the lame fake engine sounds and the total lack of any real exhaust note to speak of. This bothered me so much and since no catbacks are currently available I had a local muffler shop hack off my resonator and the two mufflers and replaces the res with a glasspack and she sounds perfect now. About like a stock Golf R in open mode or maybe slightly louder with zero drone on the highway. Another fun fact for this old man as I am amazed how this car is just a fast if not faster than my first car I had in the 80s; a 1969 Mustang coup with a 351w V8 and an aftermarket cam, intake and headers. She is putting down a 14 quarter mile and zero to sixty in about 5.5 or so with summer tires. I do plan to share my ownership experience on my channel and will be on the autocross track with her next season. Thank you so much for this and all of your awesome reviews sir!
How is it going so far? I picked up a leftover 2019 GLI a couple months ago. It drives extremely well, but I already had to replace a headlight under warranty.
Welcome back I'm very happy you are alright!
Congratulations on getting out a timely review. Lovely chaser LEDs on tachometer at 13:01
It's not LEDs, the whole gauge cluster is digital LCD.
My 2013.5 GLI has the monochromatic interior but I love it. I like how the vw interiors feel very clean; uncluttered.
Awesome, listen, I really like this car, I want to buy it, but a friend told me that if I buy a VW, I will spend most of my time with it in the dealer for reparations, and so on, he also told me that maintenance for VW are very, very expressive. My friend doesn't own a VW, he heard it from someone else, so it can't really take his statement into consideration. I want to hear it from someone that owns a VW, would you please tell me a bit of your experience with VW regarding those concerns that I had? I would really appreciate it. 🙏
@@nd-rt7dl the GLI Is my 2nd brand new vw. I owned a 2010 base model Jetta I paid around 19k brand new. It was totaled about 3 years later with 84k on the clock and my insurance pair me a little over 12k. It was an excellent car and maintained its value well. No issues at all cept my headlights kept blowing early cos the wires were too close to the engine and would heat up and blow out. Dealer fixed it at no charge and never happened again... Standby for the GLI NEWS
RK rk I own a vw with over 130k miles, haven’t had a problem since owning it
@@nd-rt7dl now my GLI Had multiple problems. So much so I ended up suing vw under nys lemon law and won. I mean, the car was stalling out around 9k miles and it got worse from there: EPC light illuminated, rough idle, losing power, replaced timing chain until I finally had the engine replaced brand new from the German factory in Mexico. Now, since they put the new engine it which was last summer and I'm closing in on 10k I've had no trouble. I still love the car , I own it outright by now and plan on driving it another ten years at least. Luck bud
I have a 35th anniversary in a manual, I love it!
Awesome. Does Comfort Mode work well? Hows that manual performance?
He’s back, he’s REALLY back! Outstanding!
VERY happy to have you back.
I saw my Skoda Octavia A7 FL when you were talking about underbody. They look almost identical as both MQB-based.
Yep. I drive O3 facelift. Same thing
Good to have you back ! Where is Mr turbosky?
Probably got promoted lol
Commenting before the video: I've been waiting for this one for a while, thank you!
YESSSS! i've been waiting for this review, thank you
I have a 35th. I LOVE it. It has adaptive dampers which helps a lot on the bumps in comfort mode. I have never hit 40mpg. Mid 30s at best when I am mainly highway. 6sp for me. I hate the radio sound, upgrading soon. I like the plain Jane. It's a stealth car. When you are a dad, this is far better than the GTI to me. Comfy and fun. Perfect combo.
Does it have a spare tire or just a fix-it kit?
@@t.k.morris a real tire. Small one but it's a tire.
Upgraded the radio. JL audio all around. Woofer, amp, DSP. Absolutely love it. Well worth the added price. Beats the beats!
Put a tune on it. You won't regret it.
You hit the Honda Accord and VW GLI back to back..the two cars I wanted to see. Great job! :-)
The Accord wins on design and beeing the least boring. The rest is VW.
@@AdHD1905 I personally think the exterior of the Jetta looks better. I'm not a fan of Honda's new obsession with chrome unibrows.
@@psnmadracer27 can get it blacked out. With a nice set of wheels...way better then grandpa jetta
@@AdHD1905 still disagree. The unibrow needs to go
glad to have you back Mark!
Love your style of video! Appreciate the mechanical knowledge. One thing that I have taken interest to lately is high speed stability. If I could suggest something, it'd be to discuss high speed stability. Some cars feel planted at 100 mph, hiding speed very well. Other cars aren't like that. Either way, I really enjoy watching your videos!!
Your dry humour alone is keeping me alive at this point. I genuinely laugh at least once every video, and that's a difficult feat. Nothing tops your ex-girlfriend yelling at you for more alimony in your GT4 video tho
You can get a DSG tune and it will remove the auto upshift. In my experience, I've never felt it automatically upshift except out of first if I'm really wailing on it. Never an issue.
So only out of first gear? That’s odd...
Glad you're back!
Glad to see you back !
Just want to say I appreciate that you still review mostly cars. Certain other RUclips car reviewers seem to have become mostly midsize and luxury SUV reviewers, and I could not give less of a shit.
My mom loves a lot of car with plastics... apparently it's way easier to vacuum up all the dog hair I shed. PS: great intro music, dance partayyy...Woof!
Yeah, if you have dogs, kids or similar messy people, easy hardwearing is better than fancy leather.
Glad you're back Geese! Looking good.
Another great review Scott. All flavor, no fat.
Can you please make some car comparison guide of what to buy like every half year or so ? Just would be nice to have quick recap from you what is really standing up from rest of the cars
every year or two would be good
What a great car, I'll slap a tune on for 300 whp and 340 wtq, yes it does make that much whp and wtq. Great lines on this car too.
Yeah till you get a CEL.
@@pumpkin1escobar You won't with a tune, if you put an exhaust without a tune then sure.
Accesports block CEL's anyway lol? Who cares.
What I wanna know is how I never came across your channel before. I loved every second from beginning to end. Nice shots bro
Damn, this is a terrific review. RUclips recommended this video to me this morning and I’m glad they did.
Love them
I have a US 35th Anniversary GLI with a DSG and so I'm watching this video mostly because I like Savagegeese. Great content, great production, offkilter sense of humor. (Basically the 35th is an S with DCC and some badges and wheels with a neat red rim stripe. )
Overall: great car so far.
Misses:
- The base seats are slightly too long and hit behind my knees. I can probably fix this with careful selection of a squishy seat cushion or lumbar support. I'm slightly oddly proportioned and car seats tend to rub me the wrong way regardless of car.
- D and S mode are pretty annoyingly tuned for efficiency. Flooring it onto the highway in S leaves the revs screaming for too long, but it otherwise stays too low in the RPMs, idles high, and it has pretty bangy downshifts as you come to a stop. D is... D is made for watching the stupid 'blue meter' that tells you how you're not destroying the environment, really, we promise we're not cheating this time.
- The stock tires aren't super great.
- No exhaust noise at all.
- If you don't stop your music playing through CarPlay before unplugging your phone, you may end up being blasted with the normal radio. Not sure if this is a VW radio thing or a CarPlay thing.
- There's no boost gauge, that's only on the upgraded capacitive touch infotainment + digital cockpit in the Autobahn edition. Why? It's a turbo performance sedan, put the boost gauge in it! I don't need a Think Blue Da Ba Dee meter.
Hits:
- M mode DSG is amazing. Sure, it upshifts on its own, but I kinda like that. Slap it in M, stand on the gas, and you will get maximum acceleration gee whiz. It also auto downshifts as you come to a stop, and it's so incredibly smooth doing it versus S mode. It doesn't engine brake doing that, so when you're just mildly coming to a stop it's perfect. You want a blip downshift to 2nd at 40mph? You can do that, too. M lets me drive exactly in the RPM range I want and the shifts are so fast. I love it slightly more all the time.
- When you just don't wanna be bothered to shift yourself, D and S are fine even with what I said above.
- It's all the fun stuff I like about the GTI (test drove a current model one when buying my previous car, which was short lived as I was in a serious accident that totaled it), but the tire sizing has more sidewall and the wheelbase is longer so the ride quality is better in Comfort mode. I live in Michigan so there's no real reason to have super sporty suspension. Our roads are shit.
- Holy crap the brakes. I had a MK6 GTI several years ago and the brakes always felt kind of weird and not confidence inducing. The monster brakes on the MK7 GLI feel like they could stop me and the car behind me.
I disabled the soundaktor in software and installed an Injen intake. If you do this, don't worry about fuel trims as this is a MAP car and not MAF so the intake is just a place to attach an air filter. Driving in D will treat you to the most completely goofball turbo woosh, which I'm pretty sure is the turbo spooling up maximum boost and then dumping it constantly through the recirculation valve because you're at 1800rpm and the intake tumble flaps are still closed. It makes me drive in M even more. Once you hit about 3000rpm, then you hear the intake growl.
Did the injen intake do anything other than make noise? I just got a 2020 gli S manual and really like it.
Inching closer to a VW Arteon review I hope.
I'm glad your all good😎 keep the wise humorous reviews up 😎
I will be buying a new vehicle in the next few months and this is on my short list. I love the fact that I can get a manual in a sedan. After your review the Jetta just moved up a bit on my list.
I like low key sedans with power hidden. My next car will be a gli or mazda 6 turbo.

Great review as always, keep it up sir
great review! I'm somewhat surprised that the Civic Si wasn't mentioned - you spoke highly of that, how would you compare the two?
Sung Oh Yeah, interesting he compared it to the accord instead of the civic. Perhaps because of the higher price as tested?
maybe bc of its size? it could pass as a passat in some countries
I'd like to know if this car is worth the slight price jump from an si.
@@blazegamefame It's only a slight price jump if you get the base model without all the leather/extra features. I think if you were considering a base model GLI, I would go with an Si instead for the reliability, more standard features, and slower depreciation. However, if you are willing to drop 30 grand on a Jetta then I'm sure GLI interior would be sublime.
@@blazegamefame Its not really that much more than an SI. The S trim is only about $1.5k more expensive than the SI and you can likely get it more discounted than and SI. I would get this car, it has quite a bit more power and just seems more solid on the road.
Volkswagen has been making turbo 4 cylinders for s long time. My volkswagens have never had issues I have the 1.8 turbo 2014 and 2.0 turbo 2018 and they both run perfect. My 1.8 has over 100k and all I have done is brakes about to do the timing belt
Errrr, the 1.8T has a timing chain. If someone is charging you to change your timing belt, he's scamming you.
🇫🇮👌 nice review again Mr. Geese.
Love the reviews (wit and humor) bud new subscriber. Bought a GLI Autobaun recently and your review is spot on exactly what I would say. I also looked at Mazda 6, Honda Accords and the GLI. The biggest factor for me was the LSD, 2.0 (aftermarket tune support) turbo and DSG. That combo is tried and true fun! The biggest surprise was the fuel economy 40 mpg is easily attained and attribute to the tuning and 7 speed DSG. Also beats still suck j/k. If you like bass ok but you can't crank it too high distortion at the limit. It sounds pretty good if you tune the bass to 0 you'll be fine. I preferred the Dyna Audio in my MK6 GTI can crank that system all the way to max.
I was wondering why savagegeese won't review the GLI 3 days ago, and there it is.... #Telepathy wow!
Or stalking . . .
The Arteon is more of my taste but this is a nice upgrade for this segment.
A lot more expensive, but made in Germany.
Arteon really could use the 2.9 V6 turbo out of the RS5. 444 HP and 442 lb-ft of torque.
Honestly agree looks to good to have a 2.0 in it :(
Anyone can tune the EA888 engine, but it would seem a nice 6 or 8 cylinder sound would befit the design moreso. And you just cannot achieve the low end effortless torque of a 6 or 8 cylinder from a turbo 4. Boost lag, throttle response, less cylinders is always more vibration. 4 bangers don't sound good unless they are a V4.
Glad you're back. Jack is a good guy, but honestly didn't watch those reviews all the way through. This channel is you. Don't change that
Glad your feeling better!
I see jack is demoted back to being a hand model. I bet he sabotaged the stereo but maybe VW will be kind enough to get you a car that's all together to test on.
Really though, hope you're doing better!
I like the look of the Jetta overall. I never liked Beats anything, headphones, speakers, etc..
lol ive never seen your videos before but that intro was commendable i must say. fine job sir fine job
that pov angle is very satisfying
Doesn't the Jetta GLI compete more with the Civic Si than the Accord 2.0 Sport?
If you want to make the si look awful. The gli is more expensive but other than mpg the gli destroys the si in every measurable way.

Screw the idiots who don't get your humor. As for the GLI, had the prior model, you're pretty much spot on except for the Damn Seats! While initial perception and comfort was good after the 3 years was up on the lease my ass was what talked me out of keeping this car. Trips over 1.5 hours were tortuous. I could not do it again so i bailed on the brand.
