  • Utah Beach presented different challenges than Omaha. The German’s had flooded nearby farmland - leading some paratroopers to drown (weighted down by their heavy packs) while also creating an obstacle for those moving off the beach.

    One correction to what I said here - OFFICERS earned on average a base pay of $203 dollars or $3500 a month. But enlisted men earned a base pay of $71.33 on average per month or $1235.47 in today’s money.

    Thank you for doing this. My grandpa landed in France on D+7. A family friend of ours was an army ranger who was part of the paratroopers who landed behind the Germans on D-day. Both miraculously survived the war and I am grateful for the time I had with both of them.

    Maybe some of them thought, we have to save France because without France there would be no United States of America...
