WHAT TO KNOW: D-Day's Famous Photograph

An estimated 2500 Americans died on D-Day ~ the majority on the particularly dangerous Omaha Beach, where the Germans had advantageous positions (see our stories and @youtube channel for more).

Without the ultimate sacrifice of these soldiers during the first landing … the rest of the operation would not have had the same success.

The photograph titled “Into The Jaws Of Death” shows what many confronted that day. But the picture of the Normandy Invasion looked much different by the end of the day on June 6, 1944.

The fighting was also far from over … the beaches only served as the first sight of a months-long campaign.
