You know why these vets did not want to talk about the war and yet it’s such a shame to lose those stories. The best first hand accounts of battle in the European Theater that I have ever read are captured in the four book series by Don Burgett. Not only are they available on Amazon, but there is a 10-part breakdown in segments on youtube of him giving a lecture at Eastern Illinois some years ago. His first book on D-Day (“Currahee!”) was also the first book by a combat soldier and was issued in the 1960’s and it was the only book on WW2 endorsed by Ike. Burgett was in the same regiment as E-Company of the 101st/506th, but he was in the 1st Battalion, A Company, vs Easy being in the 2nd Battalion.
Good chance his grandfather was with B Battery of 980th Field Artillery Battalion, as they were the first “heavy” artillery - 155mm guns-known as Long Tom to land on Utah beach. Each battery had 4 artillery pieces assigned. Battery B was attached to the 4th Infantry Division for the landing on 7 June.
