      Hello John!
Thank you so much for that! When I sat there, I thought "John would love this place...nobody around..." :-) And when I saw your video about the New England vampires, it came to me, that probably nobody does so many pipe smoking on old graveyards, than we do...LOL

No...I don't. I worked in archeology for a while...and it's all about the context of the remains...not about the things themselves... So...one shouldn't just dig for single items...without the context, they're worthless to science...

Hello Mark my good friend, good to see some footage from your time in Metz.
Really fascinating time, early European history, it is really still on the verge of prehistory and myths, just as history was beginning to be chronicled in the modern sense as we understand it today. Legends and myths have always been important to uphold kingship and rulers of the past....to give them a divine prerogative, whether pagan, Muslim, Christian, Buddhist, animist, or Hindu....which is one reason why religion poses a danger to society, by creating institutions of violence.
Great review on the Marlin Flake, a straight up VaPer flake with an interesting ingredient, Cavendish, which adds another dimension....a sweetness, as you've said..it sets it apart in some way.
Thanks for sharing this, on your own time on Holiday,

Thanks for yet another pleasant history lesson Mark . One thing that never ceases to fascinate me about history is the longing for immortality inherent to many rulers and their succession. This fear often brought out the worst in them as the story of the Merovingian dynasty, like many others has shown.
We work a lifetime to build a home, family, career, business and in some cases, an empire, always thinking in the very long term, ignoring the undisputed fact that nothing remains the same. Still nowadays, when we get married, we say “forever” but as we know, more than half of marriages end up with a divorce while half of those who do remain married end up miserable for decades. When you mentioned the “husband and wife thing”, the first thing that would come to mind to many is actually “arguing”! I guess what I'm trying to say is that we all waste way too much of the precious time we have worrying about the future and not enough enjoying the present.

My grandparents where well off and spent 25 years on genealogy. A couple rooms were all paperwork. (Before internet). I remember the excitement with the direct lineage back to Merovingian royals. Maybe it’s a common line or lots of descendants, I’m not sure but a good memory as a kid looking at all the papers from Europe and correspondence etc.

Another great historical narration mixed with a tobacco review! Also, it is a wonderful meditation on the vanity of power and prestige; what was once great has been dug up, scattered, and torn down. I wonder who will be smoking over our ruined crypts. Oh, the Marlin Flake... a great tobacco in the Rattray's Va/Per trinity! It's also very interesting to see the how the different political powers in the Middle Ages took advantage of the sites created by previous cultures who inhabited Europe (and even concealed them sometimes), as I guess was this case with the Celts? I'm living in the heartland of the Iceni whose warrior queen Boudica fought the Romans and sacked London in AD 60. Her capital was Thetford not far from where I live in Cambridge.

Hi Mark, I come back to this older video because I'm going to stay at the Vieux Moulin again this summer, and would like to visit the Merowingian graveyard myself. So could you please tell me where exactly in the Metz-Nancy-area it's located? Your help would be very much appreciated! Be well, and kind regards!

You have a great skill at these videos, to keep it interesting for forty minutes, unique approach and ability and very well done as always! Say, do these ancient bloodline families like the Merovingians still have influence and power in our society today?

Thank you so much for watching...and most kind words! So much appreciated!
Well...there are no Merovingians left...but noble families like the Guelfs still have influence on politics...since they are still very powerful landowners... There will be a video about the Guelfs...soon..
      Take care! Be well!

So glad to see this, thanks for sharing. The myth is based on the fact that The Merovingian were the original Atlanteans ie. Mermen/women. 🔱 They were not beasts by any means, that is just the typical dis their enemy put on them, as they do every single time.
The Merovingian are the Eternal Ones, The Good. If you know about what the Earth is and what the evil ones do, then you understand deeper into the why of it all. The Merovingian are the rightful owners of the Earth which had been unlawfully stolen from them. Adam/Eve were Merovingian and will soon claim back The Earth & Universe. The Merovingian are still here today, but via the Matriarch rather than Patriarch line. ✨🐝✨

Coming back to this great video to ask you a question on Marlin flake (which is on my personal top blends). Have you tried the K&K version of the Old London by Robert McConnell? The company states that the orientals of the original version have been replaced by black Cavendish and to my taste it is the same with Marlin flake. Would be very interested in hearing your opinion. Thanks again for your always interesting and thoughtful content.

To be honest... it's been a while now, since I had another bowl of Marlin Flake... but thanks to your hint, I gonna go for a fresh tin soon... and try out myself...
Hope you're well and take care!

Fantastic video! Fortunately, interest in the middle ages is on the increase and very few people refer to those times as the "Dark Ages" any more. Modern people cannot relate to that feudal lifestyle, even though the world was not rid of it until 1861. (Many Americans are still in denial about that, but the Russians will give you chapter-and-verse.)
18:13 LOOK AT THAT! That roof is made of the Roman (nearly) flat arch. Still holding up, too. It could be a bakery oven, but with the rest of the altered topography, it could have been an emergency storage space for relics and books. This was only a generation or two after the Vikings had been integrated into Eurpoean society.
19:43 Here you can see that the Roman style of wall building was still being used - stacked flat rock outside, rubble and concrete in the middle. Probably the rest of the structure was wood.
I think this was probably a monestary, not a church as people think of one today. Those cells at 22:30 are a giveaway, along with the high location.
    37:00 And roaming Germanic tribes!

Thank you so much for taking the time...and very interesting comment!
And...yes...agreed to nearly all, you mentioned! Just...the world didn't really get rid of "feudal lifestyle"...this system worked by passing on money, property and influence over the life of people to the next generation ... until countries were dominated by just a handful of families...and sons followed their fathers in reign...and they even sometimes had the same first name... :-)
Take care! Always an honor, to have you here!
