Bravo, I only smoked High end tobaccos so years.. I was told "buy cheap, Get cheap" low quality end up giving a bad pipe smoking experience. Then I tried out of Curiosity low priced box store one "Paladin black cherry".
To my happy surprise it was a great smoke with an extremely low price.
Thank you for exposing the snob in us all and opening the window to the other side of our hobby/pasión.
I love your videos. Keep up the great work.

A food for thought video! There are some wonderful tobaccos that don‘t cost much, especially bulk and often the tobacconist own blend but sometimes pouch or tub tobacco. Super Value as well as the classic OTC like Sir Walter Raleigh, Velvet, Prince Albert, Half and Half and Carter Hall are all good maybe even very good. Some in Germany too like a tub of Brookfield Nr. 2/Black Vanilla (Pöschl but made in NC, USA) are good too. As there are sales quite often, the you can get a bargain occasionally on the more expensive blends. There are some risks moderate but I had only a very few (eg Pöschl’s Radfords Caribbean Blend, maybe from Planta) which I could tell the tobacco was harsh and cheap. The risk is when some chemical fillers processed cellulose, PEG...etc) , flavourings and additives are in and get nasty when you smoke it hot. I think generally the latter problem is an issue with cheap cigars, pipe tobacco is still less abused by additives.

Mark, this was an excellent video! I was able to enjoy it with a bowl of Hearth & Home Egg Nog in a bent meerschaum whilst cleaning up the kitchen. I agree that our hobby is affordable. Even though there are some really expensive blends out there, I’m amazed at how content I can be with a bowl of Lane 1-Q or any of the Brigadier Black blends and simple corn cob. So for about $20 I can go a long long way. And you’re right, the cigar stuff is way more costly. I should encourage new comers to the hobby to check your vid out. Excellent job, sir! BTW, my kids love your introduction when you always say, “Uhm. Hi there.” :-)

You always tie my 2 favorite hobbies together in one way or another. I love when you talk history. I collect a lot of stuff from WW2. I assume that is the war your grandfather fought in. Unfortunately I can share my collection with many people because of the stigma. People today don't look at it the same way I do. It's history and it's important.

Great video Mark! Sometimes those lower priced tobaccos are often overlooked or looked down upon by some pipe smokers out there, but a lot of them don't realize what they're missing. Some of the best smokes I have had were with Carter Hall, Sir Walter Raleigh Aromatic and other such blends you can buy in pouches or tubs, if you're lucky, at certain small smoke shops. A lot of tobacconists don't even carry them anymore, so when I want an "economy" tobacco, I must hit the online market. They're also some of the best tobaccos to break new pipes in with, since for me, I enjoy the taste of the tobacco, especially the more than economy priced tobaccos. When breaking in those new pipes, the charring of the briar can alter the flavors a bit, so I like Carter Hall for that purpose. Those OTC tobaccos were the cornerstone of out hobby for many years and served many a pipe smoker before us very well. It's very worth taking a look at them and trying them out. They're cheap, so you're not out much if you don't like them, but very worth it if you do! I appreciate you taking the time to explore those possibilities and putting this out there. As always, great video and take care my friend!
P.S. Great hat, by the way!

Hm, that Barsdorf's Bester sounds interesting (Kentucky in an "economy tobacco"...?!). I might include it in my next DTM order.
At Dan Tobacco you can also get 500g bags called "Timm Sondermischung", available as Danish blend (not a heavy aromatic, just with some casing to enhance sweetness) and as English blend (it's what you'd expect it to be). These come at 42,15 € = about 4,22 € for 50g, and they're really quite good, even to the end of the bowl. Highly recommended to all pipe smokers on a budget.
Btw, I think the reason why pipe smokers of the past (say, up to the 1980s) tended to go for "economy tobaccos" is that many of them actually smoked almost all day long -- remember when smoking was allowed at the workplace and even at restaurants? Today, it's different for most of us. Take myself, for example: I get to smoke one bowl in the evening, that's it. On days off, I might smoke two, very rarely three bowls a day. If you smoke that little, you don't have to look at the price, of course. Nonetheless it's always good to know that there are still tobaccos out there that are cheap yet a good smoke.

What a nice video!! Growing the burley from your own greenhouse its amazing ... bold move but very nice idea to avoid unwanted chemicals. Wonder what you do to avoid mold and proper curing... control humidity... Got to say also: what a nice hat!!! Once more I have to praise your style: pelican pen, nice Firefox watch and a Göttmann fedora hat ( is that right?). Above everything what is special about your channel is that you always bring nice topics with some very interesting background.

You got a sharp eye, my friend! LOL...just the hat is a Chapeau Boyer...I normally go with Mayser...but I bought this one many years ago on vacation in the south of France...
And the baccy...? Yeah...well...after the baccy is done with fermentation, pressing and blending...it's tinned and stored open for a while...until it's very dry...to avoid mold... This way, the baccy is ready for cellaring... It has to be "rehydrated", to be ready for smoking then... So far, that's the only idea, I had...

I was watching this on TV and googled Carter Hall on my phone and then, you started talking about it! Didn't expect you to; being in Germany. Great to watch you earlier this morning Mark. As you rightly say, not all expensive tobaccos are good and not all good tobaccos are expensive. I really appreciate the fact that it seems like there's an increasing interest in these "drug store" type of blends in YTPC. Not entirely certain why. Maybe just because it seems good to balance out things with the more "epicurean" pipe tobaccos many of us enjoy. I suppose sometimes you want a nice gourmet dish and other times you just want an old fashioned bit of "comfort food" like a hamburger or what not. I also suppose it's a bit like that line of Tolkien: "It's no bad thing celebrating a simple life" -- or a simple pipe tobacco.

Mark, another great video. Growing up my family on my mothers side were in the Ozarks, men and women smoked pipes and chewed. As a kid I remember how the homes had a scent of hickory smoke and Prince Albert. I started smoking a pipe at 15 years old and have predominantly smoked burley , although I’ve branched out the last few years to straight Virginia’s . At almost 70 I still love an old Kaywoody with some PA. You’ve got me breaking in my first meerschaum , old dogs. I have two family meerschaums from the Civil War era . Would love to tell you the storie on those.

Hello again. To reinforce your point about vanilla, here in the states Lane 1Q is the top selling tobacco. It is, of course, a mild vanilla aromatic. That is a very cool greenhouse and those seedlings are a sure sign that spring is just around the corner.
Had to add this. The price versus quality disparity you mention sounds like the same disparity in the rhelm of wines. Some cheap wine is good, lots of expensive wine is terrible. Cheers!

Fantastic video, Mark, as usual. Nice little smoking nook you have there by the fire, old books behind you. I could enjoy an economy blend in that chair, for sure. I also enjoy good quality straight tobacco blends, as well as economy. I carry "pouch tobacco" to smoke during the work day. Mostly Five Brothers, which I tried because it is pure unadulterated burley. Talk about a dry tobacco. It is. Yet, I enjoy it. I can fill my pipe quickly, without worry if I spill a little. And, since I'm carrying only one pipe per day to work, the dry tobacco ensures that I haven't soaked the pipe before I get back home. When I'm in my own comfortable nook, I can take the time to fold and stuff a flake properly, or cut and rub a piece of plug, or something like that. And, it is, indeed, cheaper than smoking cigarettes which can be around $15/pack here in New York City. It would be a challenge to smoke even $15 of my best pipe tobacco in a day, maybe even in two or three days. Yeah. A lot of people have recommended Carter Hall. I don't know why I haven't tried it, yet. Perhaps, because of the flavorings. Yet, even I do enjoy a flavored tobacco on occasion. I'm going to order some Carter Hall, now. You have inspired me. I don't want to say that smoking Five Brothers for 10 hours a day/5 days a week is boring. I enjoy the one-note nutty flavor of the burley, a great deal. But, maybe I will add a bit of a change-up, now. I find that I have similar taste to yours. And, I cannot recall a time that I have ever been steered wrongly by The Bremen Pipe Smoker. Thanks for all of the great content. Now, YOU take care. And, perhaps, see you again!

Mark, another excellent video - am always anxious for your new ones. I bought my first pipe circa 1959 and , out of necessity, smoked what I could afford - Prince Albert, Blue Boar, Sir Walter Raleigh, Carter Hall. Since those days these tobacco's have added some kind of preservative which makes them very nasty to my taste. The Carter Hall is all the rage and reviewers talk endlessly how good it is. Over the past few years I have ordered a pouch from time to time and always end up throwing it away after a couple of bowls. The question in my mind is 'what's wrong with me' ? I surely can't figure that one out. My daily smokes are C&D burleys - Haunted Bookshop, Old Joe Krantz, Big n Burley and etc.. These are not too expensive but I do yearn for the 'old days' and the enjoyment from OTC blends. Aromatics simply are not for me. Am sure I will try the Carter Hall again and try to keep it around instead of pitching it in the trash bucket. Thank you again for your sharing and may God bless.

Watching for 6 min. and want to confess... I can afford watever tobacco I want. I have around 20 different blends and for example Rustica I bought 300 grams in case it’s discontinued. The one tobacco I crave and smoke everyday is the cheapest I could find. It’s barsdorfs best dark fired. For a cheap blend it’s just to good. I buy, press the whole 160 grams in a pastapress and for 13,95 euro I’m even more in love with it. Mouthfilling spicy and slightly sweet. Every morning with a black coffee and most days again late afternoon. It’s a 3 star tobacco, but because of the price 3,5! Take care and thanks for the headsup! Next season I start growing myself🤎

    Hi Mark,
that was another very interesting video from you. A very good idea. All tobaccos were unknown to me or I have not smoked yet. It will be interesting to smoke some of this tobaccos. We have only one local pipe tobacco on our island. He is also very very cheap, very strong on the nicotine content and is very very dry. He comes in a simple clear plastic bag. This is the only tobacco for me wich I can´t smoke. The tobacco shop owner had warned me about him. He told me he was just fine for the very dedicated natives of pipe smokers. He was right.
    Sunny greetings from the island.
    Take care.

Great channel! Great historic insights! And.., of course, great tobaccos and pipes. I noticed one thing going through your videos...you never made any review of a Dan Tobacco blend or their Torben Dansk pipes ( made by great pipe artisans like Holger Frickert and Olda Jirsa), . They have a very large range of lovely tobaccos and great prices...Is there any chance to shed some light on this subject?

I know that in America the higher end tobaccos could only really be purchased at specialty tobacconists in larger towns. Of course the internet has totally changed all this, but for more rural pipe smokers things like Prince Albert or Sir Walter Raleigh would have been all that was available at the local drugstore or grocery store. It might be different in Germany because there is a more concentrated urban landscape, or at least it industrialized sooner than large parts of America.

No such thing as a cheap tobacco in Australia, average 50g pipe tin costs 80-90 Aussi dollars or 54-65us dollars, duty free or really savour it or grow your own but it's, a pretty extensive process, I think to get a decent flavour

Another enjoyable video. Mark, I recently watched a documentary by Peter Jackson called, "They Shall Not Grow Old" and it recounts the events of WWI. They have wonderfully converted original footage into colour and during this documentary I noticed several soldiers enjoying their pipes. As a historian are you aware of what sort of tobaccos would have been smoked by the soldiers at that time? Would comparable tobaccos be available today? Take care.

    • @sebastianh.1090

I'm not a historian, but soldiers were usually issued with pipe tobacco and cigarettes. I believe the British soldiers received about 2oz of tobacco every day, but it was far from good.
Some might've had access to higher quality tobacco blends, by Samuel Gawith or Robert Lewis, but I doubt it.

Somebody else mentioned it here, but I feel like, at least here in America, that the most interesting cheap tobacco is Five Brothers. I bet you can get it because I think STG makes it. It's basically just burley with the same sort of cut that some of the Gawith shags have. It's full of stems. But it's no nonsense burley. It's super smooth for what it is, and it's earthy and nutty and nice. I like to smoke it in a little clay pipe because it's so damn strong nicotine wise. I can send you some if you want to try it and can't get it.

No such thing as cheap tobacco here in Australia. Even OTC brands like Borkum Riff and Amphora are around 80 euro equivalent, for 50g. So i just smoke the 'Fancy' stuff instead, for a few dollars more... working my way through some of Cornell and Diehl's blends lately. It's our ridiculous tobacco tax, which accounts for around 90% of the cost.

    Hi Mark,
Wow... not a black hat? 😁
When it comes to cheap tobaccos I found some interesting mixtures at Falkum in Miltenberg. Take a look at their homepage, own mixtures, "Grosspackungen". At my last visit I got examples from the "Cona" and the "Apco". At first, the smell and taste was something strange to me, but smoking that stuff showed me, yes, you can get good tabacco for a small price. By now, I have got to many tobaccos open. But when it comes to an end, I will buy some Falkum's again.
They are not to sweet, not as far so sweet like modern tobaccos. For me, it's a journey into the past (before I was born😅).
This week I have got the new Easter Edition from Kohlhase, and next week the Aylesbury Spring Edition will arrive. I hope they are worth the money.
Enjoy the weather. Here in NRW it is very friendly. I enjoyed some biking. Sorry, I have no garden😭

Oh Yes Mark, after the WW 2 our country and many folks hereby went through this very same stage of home growing and chasing after cheap tobacco as you described here, as for the undersigned, I do associate good European fairly cheap? but natural and quality tobaccos with French, Italian and Belgian domestic Burley blends, but here again,as You would know already, not everyone can smoke them due to strength and some general harshness.Of course there are very good value U,S blends out there such as this Carter Hall and other domestic Burleys ,Need to get some ,Barsdorf bester now since it sounds quite a good,Best Greets now and Thank You,
