  • The commentary track featured on the commercial DVD release of the original Broadway production of Sunday in the Park with George, featuring composer Stephen Sondheim, director and book writer James Lapine, and original stars Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters. Laughs are had, memories are recounted, and tears are (repeatedly) shed.

In the Princess Bride, Patinkin and Cary Elwes talk about getting swordsmanship lessons from a master swordsman; consequently that sword fighting scene is one of the best displays of swordsmanship to date, in a comedy movie no less! I think it's so cool that they went the extra mile to make Patinkin take art lessons, and actually draw on stage (imagine the stress!). I didn't realize he actually sketched, it must've been awesome to have been sitting in the front row for those shows!
I have come to the conclusion that a full life involves life long learning, and while not all of us can be Picasso and Einstein and Euler, that feeling of 'oh, I didn't know I could do that' is one of the best feelings next to a work well done.

That this exists is incredible. Here we are, sitting in the living room of (probably) Sondheim’s flat, and these four are just chitchatting away about their memories and observations. The mic is closest to James, and one can almost picture him holding an iPhone in his lap while everyone speaks. Really enjoying this.

It's most likely a diaphragm mic 🎤, not a cheapo phone

What a "once in a lifetime" experience to hear the insights and memories of the stars and creators of my favorite musicals "Sunday In The Park". I felt like I was sitting with old friends drinking brandy and sharing the inside story of how this masterpiece was made. They are watching the tape of the work and it jogs their memories about this artistic journey. This tape should be in the Smithsonian.

I love this musical. What is it like to love someone who is consumed by beauty?

Mandy was interrupted by Stephen like every sentence

The 6 hour interview with Sondheim is infuriating, he interrupts before the entire question is even asked, but I realized that's just how he is. It takes real getting used to. It's almost as if he doesn't agree with him at every turn. But at times he does expand upon and include Mandy.
