If you notice: Clara’s songs are in MAJOR KEY (happy, joyous) that becomes MINOR KEY (sad, melancholy) as she loses Giorgo. While Fosca’s songs are in MINOR KEY that become MAJOR KEY in the end.
Even their costume color palette shifts: Clara’s are bright colors & Fosca’s are blacks & greys--then Clara’s clothes become darker towards the end, while Fosca’s (finding & experiencing love) become brighter i.e. red/crimson signifying a return to the living...a rush of new blood in her veins.
THE GENIUS OF SONDHEIM & LAPINE IN SHOWING ARTISTIC CONTRAST.

I have this dvd...it’s a good musical..I def connect to fosca, I have chronic illnesses...I appreciate her struggle..Ms.Murphy played this beautifully. Like a dance all the way through. Not melodramatic, which could happen with this role. I can’t imagine playing this role 7 times a week. How do you come down afterword? It’s sad that Marin Mazzie has just passed away this year..too young! A wonderful talent to..its nice to hear them all so happy in the commentary. Almost a master class in itself! I’m a stage manager so it’s fun to see original broadway casts filmed and hear how the staging worked...very beautifully staged.and yes, I wish they wouldn’t have quite interrupted ms.murphy and ms Mazzie quite so often here..

4:30 -- "the problem is, after Fosca has her orgasm, there's more plot to come." That's why he's the master, people.

Aw, Sondheim sighing at the plebs for not being able to take anything serious. Thanks for uploading this! Love hearing these people converse

I don't know if I overreact but Donna talking about the misplaced audience reactions made me tear up a little. Man, this show was misunderstood at this time and maybe is still.

It must be so hard as an actor to put so much effort into it and have the audience react like that.

Musicals with Cheese’s analysis of Passion is spot on. He really helped me understand it.

Fosca is morally grey and does horrible things, but I do think some of the vitriol and laughter came from audiences not ready to handle empathizing with a woman who isn’t beautiful or virtuous. Ugly women in media are played for laughs or are villains with little sympathy attached or are genial in some kind of way. Fosca is an ugly woman who demands love for herself, at any cost. That is radical.

I'm not sure who said this, but I heard that in theatre an audience member will either laugh, or they will cry, and I think the audience wasn't ready to cry.

If anyone out there loves this show as much as I do and wants to have a fun night, watch this and drink everything Donna Murphy gets interrupted!

Men are full of themselves, gay or straight, especially when they get some fame. They truly think they are the masters. It is a collective art. Without performers, their work is dead. I think the openning nudity is completely unnecessary, a distraction, forcing audience to be voyeurs.

@@verycd especially with the role of Fosca, I've never seen another actress do it quite like Donna does

Yeah that's why I don't really like to watch this kind of video (where many people discuss). They always talk other each other and someone gets cut off every time.

The Dutch production had the actors performing naked during the opening.
