Sondheim was known for his "complex" but not necessarily beautiful melodies. This show is a good example of that. Still, I've always thought the most beautiful melody he composed was the "Second Letter" in this show at 14:23. Such a beautiful, lilting, and uplifting waltz and yet, it only lasts about 12 seconds. I wish he would have expanded on it.

One of my favorite Sondhiem shows. Music that's equal parts haunting and romantic, an asolutely perfect cast. Also, i don’t remember off the top of my head who won best lighting that year, but Passion should have won for 'Flashback' alone (That Sepiatone old school film look for Foscas past with Giorgio and the Colonel in the natural wash, perfect!)

I saw this production after the Tony win...it was during a heatwave in NYC..the theater was a steambath, sadly it made me miserable and I left after the finale, sweating and humming the drumrolls

Welp, this popped up in my recommendations, so I guess it's gonna be the next Sondheim slime recipe I'm learning

The score is a masterpiece - Sondheim’s OPERA …!

It's difficult for me to judge this fairly because when I saw it the audience was laughing, and at interval the theater was half empty. The film it's based on is equally divisive because it's also got a very uncomfortable over the top Italian - is this meant to be a black comedy? - feel to it. So I thought in spite of some lovely music, which often sounded way too much like other scores - it was a fail. Obviously we're meant to take all this intense emoting and melodrama seriously, but most people were conflicted about the character of Fosca because she seemed deranged and vindictiv,e and the atonal score. The problem was, as someone was heard to say on the way out, 'It's too close to Mel Brooks for me to take it seriously.''

Shoutout to the design team of this production! Fosca’s red gown is stunning!

I love this show so much, but I still don't buy it. The score especially is so amazing, but the default setting of the material is that Fosca is a dick.

It had beautiful music, costumes, scenery, fantastic performances, i saw it live with the original cast, but I did not like the story. Love by force, inevitable love because you're obsessed with someone who doesn't even admire you in the least. It never made sense to me.

Oh, and one more thing, though this was nominated for a Tony for Best Lighting Design (I'm not sure why it didn't win) it was NOT nominated for Best Scenic Design. WTF?

I threw away this CD when ai was 21 driving down the street...now I am 38...and I treasure it as Sondheims greatest show...most hated show...but once you know you know...

Passion is a beautiful and raw musical on how painful and ugly love can be and that is the beauty of it. Even Fosca who is ugly is beautiful to me.
