- Green Day - Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life) Alternate Version.
This is an alternate version that appeared as a b-side to the 1995 German import single for "Brain Stew/Jaded".
I like this. I see this version as the "fuck you" end to a relationship whereas the more popular version is the "we had a good run" end.
Agree, and that's why I prefer this version by a landslide.
This is the "Good Riddance" version, the middle finger to all who would call him a sellout or judge him during the time of his life - the Nimrod version is the heartfelt sincere "Time of Your Life" version. I love both of them, almost two completely different songs depending on who BJ is directing it to.
Agreed
Jonathon Huckvale as I recall, it was written as a giant eff you to his ex who joined the peace corps in like fkn Ecuador. correct me if I'm wrong.
It's a *SARCASTIC* song. Jeez.
Irritable Jon Synndrome Why so angry? It's a sarcastic fuck you to Amanda. So what?
Jon Dillon I think that’s the magic of this song. It’s the reason it was so impactful and resonated with so many people is because there are two sides coming from two emotions that we all feel. It’s about bittersweet endings and new beginnings. Anytime we have to say goodbye we feel that there’s A little of both. Sometimes it’s almost completely “good riddance and fuck you” and other times it’s almost all “hey this is over but while we were together I hope you had the time of your life”. Usually it’s a little of both. Just because he had an experience that he was specifically writing about doesn’t mean you can pigeonhole it to only that specific situation. Love songs are never to be locked within that limitation. That’s why you can play it at graduations and have it be sincere and sentimental. Or why BJA plays it as his last song at a concert. He’s not saying “fuck you” to the audience. It can be played both ways which is what makes the song so powerful and impactful.
This version sounds way more like Green Day.
even Kurt agrees!
I prefer this one to the Nimrod one, but both are quite nice in their own way
I mean Green Day sound however they wanna sound
@@dylanburton4955 They definitely had a very particular sound for their first several albums though
It was recorded in the dookie sessions, so I'm not surprised
@@verttinorrkniivila3183 but this was on brain stew single
This 100% should have been on Shenanigans
Then, that would make Nimrod less successful.

How about they do it At the Library?
They did for my middle school’s graduation

The people who liked middle school listen to Time Of Your Life.
People who hated middle school listen to Good Riddance.
Best way to distinguish them.
Ah, green day and sonic, two things that turned in shit after the 90's
@@peppers4zeze532 but bruv sonic mania was good
I like Middle School and I Listen to both of them.
@@peppers4zeze532 Green day is the best.... Thats your opinion
@@kadenb7567 And his opinion doesn't count lmao
I dig this way too much. The key change and strumming of the chords make this is a completely different song. The nimrod version is too heartfelt and this is like a huge fuck you to everyone and everything. Much love to Billie Joe's unbelievable voice and song writing skills
Had this as a b-side on a brain-shaped CD of Brain Stew. Always thought it was cool.

This is the definitive edition for me. I heard this version so many times before the Nimrod version. Both good but this one hits harder for me
Imagine if this is how the new upcoming Green Day album ended, that would be sick
Kinda like ordinary world
If you guys want to get technical he didn't stop writing it until 1997 when they finally released the violin version with the extra chorus at the end everyone at your prom came to know. Boom! Settled.
This song was written before dookie but not released until nimrod but was on brain stew single
Joseph Maffei was written before kerplunk fool

@@adamgriffith-smith9106 The fuck do I care?
Is it just me or do I prefer this version to the official release?
This is much better
It is amazing how a simple key change and the addition of strings made this song so heartfelt on Nimrod.
This version, on the other hand, is one of the greatest FUCK YOUs ever given to the world.
The power of music, y'all. 🥰
This is the original version which was on Insomniac in some countries. Written 1995
aspasiz it was written in 1990 and shown to the band in 1993 but wasn't in an album til 1997
I have the Brain Stew/Jaded single CD and this is on it. Costed 400. But shit. I'm a fan.
400?? dollars????
I just bought unplugged
Yikes--$400? The tape full of Dookie demos only cost a little upwards of $100 I think. But I mean, it was most likely worth it. This song is amazing
@@fussanchez2716 @John Burns
Yeah, its the one thats cut out in the shape of a brain.
@@whatintheworldisgoingon6208 did you get it first day or something? I got mine for $35
Crazy to think the version that got so popular was a re-recording of this version
I dont know why this wasnt on Nimrod Deluxe. Such a missed opportunity
I heard he wrote it in 1990.
'93
No, it was 1990, but it wasn't shown to the other members until 1993.
Oh okay
He wrote this song when he was 18, crazy
wtf are you talking about, this song is written around the time 1994-1996 when they got blacklisted at gilman for putting out Dookie on Warner.
So technically this is the original version, since this came out first.
Half step down. Weird for this song
This is surprisingly decent
I like it better then the norm verson tbh
Way better
It's more simple but it sounds more like Billie Joe personally which I love
I love this fuckin cover. It's more stripped down, no violins just an acoustic guitar & Billies great voice!
weird to think that the version on nimrod is technically a cover of this
studmangg yeah that's pretty weird
Ironic this is the original version.
Rob Holloway no it's the good riddance b-side
It's not a cover, it's from before the actual song was released
*The idea of putting violin and cello on this was amazing...thanks whatsurname!*
Such a great song. Timeless. What a songwriter.
Sounds like the first time I heard this song. 8th grade halloween me and my friends walked around town listening to green day. This somehow really brings me back
So technically this is the original version, since this came out first.
i actually like this version a lot better. not that i dont appreciate the album version, because its amazing (especially live) but this doesnt have that long instrumental, and a lot more acoustic.
This version is better than the original ;-;
This was recorded before the one on nimrod, this is the original...
boulevard_of_ chocolate_milk love your channel name
lol I follow your account on Instagram
Here’s the difference between the two versions of this song:
This version is a song any punk band would be proud of writing.
The Nimrod version is a song Paul McCartney would be proud of writing.
playing this song on repeat as today marks my final day staying with my parents. I am 27 and for all the wonderful memories, i cant thank my parents enough and i know they wont be around forever but it every day of my life living here even through the good and bad days, i cant thank them enough for everything. I used to listen to this same song alt version back in HS and haven't listen to it since, but today i got reminded of it because i seriously have had the time of my life and now moving on to the next chapter.
It is not a song about being grateful. It is a giant "fuck you" to the end of a relationship and to that person.
it's been how many years now and I only just learned teen me only had heard an alternate version of the song? I was looking out up tonight and none of the videos sounded quite like I remembered... until I stumbled on this one. :')
It's not a question, but a lesson learned in time
I'd rather this version simply because it's only him and the guitar, nothing else if you know what I mean
Riksta 09 that's the way the finished version is too...
Aidan LaRose not really. The finished version is polished and not punk. This is raw and punk
Aidan LaRose The finished version has strings as well.
Aidan LaRose he means like the Nimrod Version has violins I think that’s what he means at least, this one is just him singing and playing
"iTs PoLiShEd AnD nOt PuNk" lmao wish i could be 15 again
Never new this existed wow
This version sounds way more like Green Day.
I heard from Billie in an interview he wrote it during the time he wrote the songs for Dookie, which would be 1993.
It was before 1993
Crystal key the ultimate prize victory this song helped me win
Deadpool & Wolverine ❤💛
To those who say this song is only written as a sarcastic “fuck you” to his girlfriend who moved to South America you are wrong. There are two versions of this song depending on who BJA is directing it to. I think that’s the magic of this song. It’s the reason it was so impactful and resonated with so many people is because there are two sides coming from two emotions that we all feel. It’s about bittersweet endings and new beginnings. This would’ve been such a cool way to end the Insomniac album.
I love this version
If you look up the video good riddance at warped he actually plays it in this tuning
Yes this is the version I remember and the version I sent to everyone when I left CareerBuilder. Later dudes…
This song was written before dookie but not released until nimrod but was on brain stew single
Is it just me or do I prefer this version to the official release?
Best version of this song ever!
This one is Good Riddance, the Nimrod is Time of Your Life
No, the Nimrod version is Good Riddance (Time of Your Life). Stop making shit up!
@@imthegrinchthatstolechrist4384 Ever heard of a metaphor?
@@Minecraftlover73 ever heard of "shut the fuck up?"
@natrox101 no orchestra, and he just strums the chords , he doesnt pick the strings
This is living proof that the key of G is inferior to that of F# (or any other key signatures in all honesty) I usually skip the official record on nimrod, but this version just seems far more palatable, Billie probably had a reason to change it a half step higher, but this version is criminally underrated
this is an out of tune F# not G
Danke @radioBOB für diesen Song! Ich habe immer nur das original gehört doch finde diese version ssoooo viel besser :)
Just found this tonight....i think it's better than the one they put out
so nice
love the vocals in this version. and badger, chords are G, C, D for most of the song. it drops to Em, D, C, G during the second part of each verse
The Nimrod version is the Time of your life version.
This is the Good Riddance version.
My favorite versión without orquesta
i love this
this song is beautiful
Nah man was doing some DADGAD stuff. :P my fav green day song is redundant btw
*Eb Ab Db Gb Bb eb
jules leenders OMG he is 11 wtf
its a half step down
I should try to play this version at graduation.
Lol when he came back with the pre chorus at the end, that sounded like such a typical Green Day song.
Wow, this is so awesome :D
I still prefer the Nimrod version. It's more dynamic sounding with the arpeggiated guitar and string accompaniment. This version is just hard strumming all the way through. Cool to hear this earlier iteration, though.
This is surprisingly decent
wtf is not decent... its awesome
Love it!
I can play both this version and the normal one lol. This one is tuned down half a step and there are no arpeggio picking patterns.
Very good 👌
I like this version more. The lyrics make way more sense too.
If they're doing something special for Nimrods 25th I hope they add this
❤💛
Too many memories of the crystal key the ultimate prize win.
Anyone knows what tuning is this in? It sounds lower than the nimrod version.
Eb
Eb? I would try that.
Tune your guitar down a half step.
I know I’m really late but is this version on Spotify
Darth Jar Jar hey I’m late too. No it’s not hahaha

Jake Stein sorry if it has and I wouldn’t have said if i knew it would do that but I’ve been using it for a few months and have had no problems

This isn't a live version it's the b-side of Brain Stew/Jaded
This video has been up for 8 years, has close to 100k views, yet it only has 9 dislikes.
Honestly, I think I prefer this version.
This is better than the Nimrod version. Stripped down and a lot more "simple and to the point." Certainly more raw, and if you ask this fan, sounds more like a Green Day song.
@MarkTav9211 yea, the key is definately chaged. they tend to do that a lot with demos lol
This version is the middle finger to the entire punk scene that called him a sell out
@jinxfink yeah haha. in the albums before nimrod, billie joe tuned his guitar tp E flat, so i did that and played the same chords and it sounds more like this version
I wanna know what tuning this version is,,, I already know this song on guitar,,,
Eb. From low string to high string: Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb

Genial ! Cool
Dear god somebody help me figure out what chords are used!! I can’t find it anywhere!!!!
Play the same chords but tune ur guitar down a half step
G, C, D , Em

@badger03 G, Cadd9, D in the verse. then Em, D, Cadd9, G. then finally Em, and G
beginning gives me demolicious stay the night vibes
This is way better than the original version!
This IS the original b side version
♥
Personally, I dont think this song can outdate
Much better without the backing strings. More angry.
Better representation of what Billie plays live
I hope you had the time of your life
Sounds like a Belle and Sebastian song
@natrox101 The chords are strummed instead of picked
@GamerMan57 I think that is a nimrod version, version billie joe used to play live
