Lyrics:
Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road
Time grabs you by the wrist, directs you where to go
So make the best of this test and don't ask why
It's not a question, but a lesson learned in time
It's something unpredictable, but in the end it's right
I hope you had the time of your life
So take the photographs and still frames in your mind
Hang it on a shelf in good health and good time
Tattoos of memories and dead skin on trial
For what it's worth, it was worth all the while
It's something unpredictable, but in the end it's right
I hope you had the time of your life
It's something unpredictable, but in the end it's right
I hope you had the time of your life
It's something unpredictable, but in the end it's right
I hope you had the time of your life...

The saddest part of life is when the person who gave you the best memories becomes a memory
Wow ❤️
I’ll never forget this.
This is the reason why I listen to this every day.
holy shit
and my mom wonders why I'm always crying
my question is how do people sit down one day and write a fucking masterpiece without even knowing its going to be.
Actually they sat down one green day and wrote it lol
Witchcraft
It's something unpredictable, but in the end it's right.
Billie himself that they were not going to release the song because he felt that the fans wouldn't like it........little did he know. I graduted junior high and high school to this song. It is a great song
right omfg i dont understand. theyre geniuses
"For what it's worth..it was worth all the while". Sums up the life journey in just 10 words.
Made it to 69 years old… yes it does 👀
So true! Let's enjoy the ride each day
I was 16 years old when I first heard this song. I'm 30 now and I'm still listening. reminds me of the old days

@@cripdafoe2714 -Focus on living rather thn surviving.
- Don't take life too seriously.

Agreed! ❤️

I’m no longer close with my childhood friends. We’ve all gone our separate ways. But wherever they are, I wish them nothing but the best and I’m grateful for the fun times we had. 1991-1996 are years that I’ll cherish forever.
Yup...same here during the 90s also.
I completey feel you right now... sad but the grestest joy to know that I went through that....
Feel the same way. I hope everyone I lost touch with is enjoying their life!
Dang...same. I miss my childhood friends so much
My aunt passed away this morning, needed to hear this 😢 I truly hope she did have the time of her life.
Bless u
I am 16. I lost my friends while I was 15. Things get rough but you have to remember the good things about them.
My condolences for your aunt and know this she had the time of her life through the conduit of you looking out for her while this song is playing in the background!!!!
So you ard saying good riddance?
I am so sorry for your loss 😢
I’m 68, heard this song today and honestly, it brought a few tears to my eyes thinking about my youth and the fun I had. I’m still a kid at heart and always will be. Don’t take your youth for granted, it goes quickly..
i promise i wont. i have arthritis and everyone's been telling me to take it easy and to stop skating and be careful, but while im young im going to act it. i refuse to spend my youth being careful, i dont care how stupid it is or how much pain i'll be in a few years. im young so im going to do stuff while i can
we are all always kids at heart
Same here, Geno. I hear ya.😊
I'm 24 and will be 25 soon. Shits happened to me these years. But stated to learn guitar 2 months ago then I heard this song. Now I feel happier than before and want to explore more things. Anyway, it's like a young fellow mumbling here. I wasted my time too much, and from now on I will grab it as possible as I could. Thanks Geno!

Im now at age 22, no job, no confidence, anxiety always attacks me, also having an existential crisis. I hope i will have the best time of my life in the future.
Hold on to hope!
I was the same at 22, and homeless, just completely lost... 30 now, got an amazing little girl, she will soon be 6. Got a job, my own place, a car that is modified in the "rat look" style that I use every day, among other projects and let me tell you this. I never thought I'd make it to 23, let alone have what I have now. Trust me, it gets better. It may take years but, you can make it in life. Even when you think you can't. Music like this got me through some of the hardest times I've ever faced, keep listening. And, I would suggest steering clear of drugs, if you can. Don't make that mistake. They don't help, just escalate your problems. Keep it real. 👊
Very normal-I had panic attacks at 22 and thought it would never end. Your 20s is a time for self discovery and when you reflect back on them you’ll see it was worth it and beautiful. Take care of yourself
Me too bro. I'm 22 and exactly the same as you rn :')
You will bro just pray have faith and pure heart
Thats all and be a good person
Personal Story Time:
I was 17 when I was introduced to Green Day by my girlfriend at the time who was obsessed with them. So, to impress her before we started dating, I binge listened to all their music and slowly but surely I realized why she was so crazy about this band. I could relate to her on a whole new level because I eventually just loved all their songs and we would cruise throughout the late nights just listening to Green Day in my car. "When It's Time" was our song by them. I was definitely head over heels for this girl and when I went to the military, she waited for me. It all sounds like a movie now that I look back on it. Another song that always stood out to me was " Good Riddance". It wasn't necessarily a happy song when I read the lyrics so I couldn't really associate happy feelings with it. Anyways, fast forward, we both start our freshman year of college together. Life's good... until life and school start to get in between us and we were no longer those young kids that fell in love in high school... We slowly became different people. As months go on, we argued more and more and I came to the realization that maybe, it's better if we went our separate ways. I ended it but I knew it was for the best. My heart was broken because as much as I wanted "us" to work, it didn't. I loved that green eyed red haired girl. Fast forward a week later, I find out she rebounded and let me tell you, even though we weren't together, I suffered knowing something so precious to me was easily snatched up by a guy she barely knew. I don't think I've ever cried so hard ever in my life because folks, a broken heart tears you apart from the inside out. So, after months of trying to recover, I revisited Green Day again because I really loved their music, but I associated their music with her. One song stood out more than the others... " Good Riddance".. because each single lyric has meaning behind it for me. It will forever be associated with her now because it matches so much what we went through for 2 years. " It's something unpredictable, but in the end it's right, I hope you had the time of your life" As she was the best thing for me in the beginning, she ended up being the worst for me in the end, but I loved every second with her.
Update: I didn't realize this comment would blow up the way it did! Really I was just in my feelings one night and wrote about this personal story to get it out of my system 😅 I didn't realize how many people actually cared to read it and I'm grateful for that. Anyways, if you're wondering what happened after this story took place, life went on as usual. Everything healed with time really. It's never the end of the world when break-ups occur even though it may seem like it at the time. These types of things are just little bumps In the road of life that may slow you down, but ultimately it's your choice to pick up the pace once again, even if it is just baby steps. It's still progression!
P.s. life's too short to be worrying about one person you've been with for however long. Especially if you're a Marine and a sophomore in college 😅
Much love!
07/25/2021: I saw Green Day for the first time last night for their Hella Mega tour with Weezer and Fallout boy in Dallas ♥️ at the end of their set, they played this song in the most tranquil, peaceful way possible!! 😭😭 It was so beautiful and It felt like everything in the past has led to this moment, as weird as that sounds. I'm a teacher, and I'd like to dedicate this song to the class of 2020, who won't be able to walk across the stage in May. We're at a unique juncture in history, and we're all trying to keep our heads above water. The next generation is yours to lead.......learn from some of the mistakes of our current leadership, and instead, use what's brought you this far: awareness, preparation, team work, and proficiency. Be safe, and a thousand congratulations to you all. Live well.

I can remember this playing at my high-school graduation, I was on top of the world and ready to take it by storm. Here I am now 30 and life has broken me, Embrace being happy and in the moment because it will be the good old days before you know it.
Same age similar situation but we gotta keep going because who else is going to do it! One day at a time it’s been worse
Keep going. You got this!
Things always get better down the line. :-)
I'm 60. I promise you, it gets better. And better still. Try to be patient (hardest part!) and work through it. I've been broken many times since age 30 and healed and become stronger (and smarter, I hope!) every time to date. You will too. Hold your friends and chosen family close, and when they offer you help, TAKE IT. Look into neutral 3rd party help -- therapy -- if you can. Wishing you everything wonderful in 2024. ❤️

@bjornskywalker6969This world has become cheap and toxic with necessity to live sometimes the only way to survive the harsh conditions you face with bad luck and bad times. It becomes then important for some of us to flee for living a larger life in youth even at the cost of leaving your loved ones where they want to stay.
We always think about respecting our society but not about us, ge damn self respect. Then we start loathing ourselves if we haven't done so. Yes it's called becoming selfish. The only easy way to succeed.
Green day has a special meaning that turns out to be helpful for people who lost their identity and wasted youth in bad times.
Thanks! Back atcha!

This was my cousin Crystyn's favorite song. She died from a head on car crash in 2001. My school teacher's son dated her, and bless her heart, she played this for at my high school graduation. Your band has been a miracle to our family! It makes me cry whenever I hear this song, but in a good/bad way. You guys kick @ss! ✌
This song has really taken a lot of different meanings to me as years go by, it was a graduation song, a break up song, a memorial song for a lost friend, a song reminiscing about the past, an anti-depressant when Im having a rough day, and I guess it will continue evolving as time goes by and I enjoy the good times, while learning and growing from the bad ones. All those memories makes up who I am, and for what it's worth it has been worth all the while. This song ages like wine.
Listen mate, you've got this, "life" grab it. You're the man. You CAN do it
This was my H.S. graduation song if I remember correctly. If Green Day ever breaks up, this has to be their last song played at their last concert. I hope that day never comes though.

@@cmoneystudios4813 cause the lyrics are too mature for an 18 year old to write
@@AabidHussain69 no it isn't, how? and he didn't actually write it when he was 18, because it was released in 1997, which was a 7 year gap from 88 around the time of kerplunk and 1039 slappy, before they were even signed, the song was heavily revised and many of the original lyrics did not make it, so he wrote this song over 7 years and he was a bit older, stop making such a huge deal when it really isn't

Since I'm 10 I've always wanted to learn how to play the guitar, but my parents didn't let me.(but i learned piano)
This year was one of the worst in my life(I'm not joking) and Green Day (and also music in general) helped me a lot.
Finally three weeks ago I started my guitar lessons and yesterday my guitar teacher said "now I wanna teach you this very beautiful song" and he started playing"Good riddance".
Now i learned it (only the chords ofc)
and I don't know how to describe how I feel...finally I'm happy, not bc of the fact that I kinda learned this song, but bc I reflected a lot these months and I stopped hating on myself.

One would think it’s because these songs are old and therefore filled with nostalgia, but I remember listening to this for the first time so many years ago and instantly feeling very nostalgic. Same thing with songs like She, When I Come Around, Redundant or... well, all of Nimrod actually, the album this song is from.
He has unique voice, not a very good singing one, but he makes up for that with emotion, few people have a singing voice that is actually very good, but most who don’t have a lot of emotion, that’s talent
True😥😥
Fuck you dumb bitch he gots a better voice then you he's famous your not so take it from there
This song is twenty years old now. 1997 may seem like a long time ago, but it was just yesterday to me. Bitter sweet life :)
The other day my Zumba teacher called this an "Oldie." Oh dear, lol.

i found this song after my dad pass away a month ago.. i love the part he said "i hope you have the time of your life" its so meaningful. As if the nature know the best way to speak about my heart.

What about the dead ones? That'd be very interesting. Just have a gravestone, or the last photo of them, like one where they're smiling a big smile.

My dad had a friend, a skateboarding buddy, and I grew up around him. I’d always looked up to him. I had a little kid crush on him... he was only 22, and was killed in a car accident because the other person was messed up on medicine they were taking. I’m still devastated to this day... this was one of his favorite songs that he wanted played at his funeral. He wrote a poem about dying a couple months before he died... it’s kind of like he sensed he was going to. I have the shirt with his poem on it. I miss you so much... so so much.
Yours is a really heartbreaking story, and I'm sure he's watching over you. It's sad that we have to go through that kind of pain, but our lives are made of highs and lows. I need to ask you this, and I don't want to sound impolite, but would you be mad if I asked you to share the poem with us? Art is supposed to be appreciated after all.
Ronaldo Oliveira absolutely. I’ll pull he shirt out tomorrow that has it written on the back to share. It’s late now and I just laid my son down for bed :-) if you wouldn’t mind to comment back tomorrow and remind me, because I may forget!
@@coralime2298 Hey, sup! I forgot to drop by yesterday. Now I'm here 😃
Ronaldo Oliveira hi!
When I’m Gone by Andy Hovis
“For when I die, who would cry?
Thy shall not shed a tear,
instead have a beer
When I’m gone don’t be sad,
rejoice the days that we had
Laugh at the times we shared,
not for the ones that were lost and not shared
Though I may no longer be a being,
I’ll be here, believing isn’t always seeing
Look into the sky,
and wave hello not goodbye
I will not rest,
though I shall make laughs, what I do best
When the winds take your hair a blow,
my fingers running through thy hair you will know
Don’t be sad, not for a while,
look into the stars and crack a smile...”

I use this song to go to sleep, it’s so soft and calming and it’s a very historical piece of music. It makes you realize how lucky you are to be healthy and safe.
Nobody should ever question Billy Joe's songwriting abilities- raucous or mellow, he's great.
The violins always get me. They’re Placed so perfectly in the song. Even when I was little, I always thought this is a subtle masterpiece this song.
Ik Noah love u bro
Thank producer Rob Cavallo for the violins. He sent the band to another room where they played foosball, and 20-30 minutes later (by his own reckoning) the strings were done.
Thank the grunge movement for re-introducing strings to rock 'n' roll.
Listen to The Mountain Goats. If you think this is sad, prepare to be destroyed. We Shall All Be Healed (album) may be up your alley.
I dont wanna ruin the song for you but this song is far from what most people think ,(ps its not a graduation song )

I used to listen to this song in my 20's and loved it. Now I am married and have kids and just passing by to heard this now again, still give me the chills.
This is for sure a masterpiece! So happy to be part of the 80s/90s generation ❤
My dad is nearing 50 and is no longer in the prime of his life. Last week he off handedly mentioned he wants this song played at his funeral. I use to love this song but after that I hate it. All I can think of now whenever I hear it is that I’ll lose my dad one day. He’s not the smartest guy but his heart is always in the right place and he gives his all to everything he does. He can go up to any stranger and 5 minutes later they’ll be friends. He has literally given the shirt off his back to someone in need. He has jumped off a bridge into the lake below after seeing someone crash through the railing to save them without hesitation. He has noticed a house start to catch fire and kicked their door down and went inside without fear to make sure nobody was in danger and after confirming nobody was there he carried their fish tank out so they wouldn’t die. He would give his life for each and every one of us without a second thought.
I don’t want to lose him but I know the time will eventually come. And when it does I hope I’m at least half the man he is.
i understand your pain, looking at the ones you love grow old, starting to forget and such, it's inevitable but i hope you can listen to this song later in life and remember the great man he is, and that he made you a good being that you are, stay strong this life is worth it, in the end if we never felt pain and sadness we would never appreciate the joy and happiness hope you are okay
anyway he´ll die one day. one way or another
He's 50 mane, come on! I don't think he's going to go anytime soon so don't worry. I don't want to be a crybaby but, in my case, my grandparents are more likely to die soon. It's sad, but it's part of being a human.
He sounds like a wonderful person
Sounds like a great guy, but you know "almost 50" is still pretty damn young!

My mom likes mellow folk music
My dad likes hard rock/metal
This is their agreement

If he likes hard rock and metal how would this song be a compromise? Nothing about it screams rock, it’s just a punk ballad
Country rock by the Green Day💖
Yes, it's called "alternative". Technically, Green Day is a punk rock band.
This song was dedicated to a fellow student of mine who tragically lost his life during the summer holidays of 2001 whilst we were awaiting our GCSE grades. Never ever forgotten Billy ❤️❤️❤️😔
Man… 14 yrs old losing my dear friend to a self inflicted gunshot wound … still haunts me seeing it to this day. I find it hard to hear this even after all these years. I still miss and think, just wonder where all my friends have gone from that time in my life. A boy from Ohio who never wanted to move to Alexandria VA only to still wish today that I could hug one of them. It changed my life forever . We used to sit around his grave smoking and drinking , missing him dearly . RIP John - you’ll live on forever ✊🏻
I'm a high school teacher. Once my students were quietly working and I put this song on my cell phone while I was sitting at my desk. One of my boys looked up and said "Are you playing Green Day?" In 2022. A teenager !! Yes, I am, young man. You know this group? He said "yes ma'am. I like this song." This song is for everyone!! For all time!!

This song can mean A LOT of different things, the thing I think it means is that it for someone you've lost who has died, but it can be a girlfriend who broke up with you, your mom who is dating again, really anything you can put your mind into, its such a deep song and I'm scared that I'm gonna cry while i perform this for my entire school, but if I do, I don't care, because I'm a human being, and emotion is a part of being a human, so I would be proud for crying and remember the ones I love :)
Funny you should say, I was watching a green day biography the other day. It said that Billie Joe originally wrote this song after a breakup with a girlfriend (obviously before he met Adrienne) But the song was not released until the "Nimrod" album. The song is basically about how unpredictable life can be, but to enjoy every day as if it was your last. oh, and THIS IS NOT A FUCKING GRADUATION SONG!
***** never said it was :)
Lol I know but billie said that once
i know
Its about him letting go of his girlfirend
When i was in high school, this song played at our graduation (2000). At the time i was EXCITED to leave. Now I cry for those years.

This song applies to all of us! Shit happens, move on and have the time of your life! Age, or curcumstances are irrelevant! Enjoy Life
Time Of Your Life is easy enjoy.
That’s a tad bit insensitive isn’t it? It’s not always as easy as all that.
(Also the song is clearly talking about the other person, in a somewhat sarcastic way)
I wish I could take this advice. Wish it was that easy.

@@ohiosmartydempinkhat9684 Good Riddance 2021.
@@ohiosmartydempinkhat9684 I'm a Green Day Mega-Fan, and I know that behind the song lyrics "meaning" or intent. But BJA always has very intriguing explanations of his songs. He compares a couple of their songs to the Beatles and you'd never in your wildest dreams see it/hear it. The song "I'm Still Breathing" has been explained vaguely, yet every diehard Green Day fan is 99% certain it's about Mike Dirndt's wife battling cancer.
Their approach to songs is similar to many artists and poets. You figure it out for yourself. Apply it to your experiences. Or in other cases, he writes songs like Stay the Night and Lady Cobra as outright admissions of his infidelity. It is a cathartic exercise and his dear wife (Youngblood is his anthem to her) clearly gets it, and is a Saint for loving him through all his errors and outright fuck-ups.
CLEARLY when BJA wrote GR-TOYL it was not merely a "fuck you"...it paints a picture of the good, the bad, the ugly...but in the end time keeps passing and life forces decisions and you have no time to dwell on the past. Fork in the road...hang the pictures on the wall...but as we go our separate ways...no matter the experiences or how it ended, I hope you enjoyed the good times we had.
I've been with my wife 30 years. It's no secret I had my share of dalliances before her. Two were absolute loves of my life. The good stuff was pure magic, which I can relive closing my eyes. But all that deep passion came with some fiery downsides, and both ended that way. Too many years have passed, but for a solid ten years I wished there had been the possibility to tell them I hope they had the time of their lives. That the memories are on the wall...and we never put our old issues on trial...we had many forks in our roads and went far away, but only the good lives on. Those pictures hang on my wall. I'm not ashamed, either. Those experiences made me who I am. And I had the time of my life with many people over the years. Most of all, my son, who is soon off to college soon. Shit, we've had problems, but then I go grocery shopping with him a couple days ago...and finally did Disneyworld last week...and I Had the Times of my Life.
@@Tomas.X I knew the comment section of this song wouldn't disappoint. Great comment 👏👏👍
It was a risk for Green Day to make this guitar driven ballad-type song because of their hardcore rock fans but I'm glad they did. This song makes me think of my memories.
In a way, I find this song even more punk than usual. Punk is about breaking the rules and this song breaks the rules of punk.

Rip June , may your spirit and soul soar forever , you were amazing, I miss you as does your family and friends
This is one of those songs that I wish I could go back and hear again for the first time. The emotions I feel every time I hear this song are intense and deep. I surely can't be the only one who still cries to this song every time they listen to it. As someone who suffers with derealization and anxiety pretty much everyday it can be hard not to enjoy life because of how numb this world makes me feel. However, whenever I hear this song it reminds me that we only get one life and to enjoy it while we can because we're never promised tomorrow. I'm going to watch Green Day live next year in Manchester and I can already say I'll be singing this song with every breathe I have, whilst bawling my eyes out at the same time. Please do not EVER let this iconic song die out!
