Green Day is covering a song sung by many people over the years, many of them long before the Clash. A song is only a cover of the original. Every other version, including that of the Clash, is just a cover, unless it makes major changes to the song. This doesn't. It has different guitar work, but the lyrics match the original, and the tempo is pretty similar to that of the biggest hit version, by Bobby Fuller (it was originally by the Crickets, post-Buddy Holly). Sorry guys, but the Clash version was not a big hit and is not nearly as well-known.
