I remember playing this in the club when it came out. The dancefloor was a hot sweaty mess.

The classic, excellent 17 minute album/CD long version not only has a full orchestra, it has the really "controversial"" section that made it banned in some countries because it was deemed too explicit. After Donna became a Christian years later, she allegedly tried to keep the record label from re-releasing it, but failed. PS: The several-minute orchestral instrumental part of the full 17 minute part is classy as hell! Donna was living in Germany at the time because she went there to be in the stage production of "Hair". After the incredible success of LTLYB, Donna, Georgio Moroder (called the German king of disco, I believe) and Pete Bellotte teamed to do other songs of hers.

The extended version of the song, only came about after Donna signed with Casablanca Records in the US, it was played on some late night radio station in the US. It was not banned, it was this radio edit was banned across Europe.

You need to listen to "I feel love" the studio version (1977 Midnight Special) her voice, the music the way she moves. I find it amusing when people like Beyoncée think they are moving in a sensuous way and they are not even in the same galaxy as Donna. Just wait until you discover Grace Jones and/or Sade Adu...

React to her "I feel love", regarded as one of the most influencial songs, and changed music. Also her duet with Barbra Streisand "Enough is enough", and of course Mac Arthurs Parc, Bad Girls, Hot Stuff, State of Independence, One the Radio...

"Top Pop" is short for "Top of the Pops," a long-running UK TV show covering the top hits of the day. I think the main US equivalent would have been a show called "American Bandstand." And yeah, their dancers aren't doing moves appropriate to the music here. I think their dance troupe at the time was called Pan's People or something like that. Another movie that has a seventies Donna Summer song in it is "American Hustle" from 2013 but set in the seventies. It features a disco scene where Summer's great 1977 "I Feel Love" is throbbing over the dance floor.

Back in 1975 , when this song was released, I was 11 and remember hearing "shocked" people talk about the song's controversy. I heard parts of several discussions of adults couldn't stop talking about how controversial/scandalous they believed this song to be . Many adults were outraged; but couldn't stop discussing it. They tried to keep the song and its discussion about it away from us, curious children. As a young boy and singer as well, I connected with the musicality of Ms. Donna's voice and instantly became a lifelong fan and wanted to hear more! Now almost 50 years later, I still love that voice!

Even today the full version would raise some eyebrows on the radio I think, but back then even in the free love 70's this would be one giant 'Nope!' with radio station owners who grew up decades earlier.

There's a really entertaining video of Donna singing "Last Dance" live at the celebration of Obama's Nobel Prize in 2009 in Norway I think. She's in her 50's but knocks it out of the park with still great vocals.

This was very early Donna Summer. The original song was less than 4 minutes long (Donna recorded it as a demo for someone else to record)- then her producers got Donna back into the studio and they recorded an almost 17-minute version of it. It was sent to radio stations in the U.S. and became a huge hit. When Donna went back to the U.S . from Germany - she had no idea that she had a hit single. From 1975 -1980 - No one could touch Donna Summer. She had major success. When she became a Born-Again Christian in the early 80's - she refused to perform this song ever again. I remember her first album "Try Me, I Know We can Make it". was already playing in the dance clubs a year before "Love to Love You Baby" was playing on the radio.

I can see by the comments, that people are saying a lot of things that just are not true. The song itself, this single edit, was banned by the BBC and several other conservative European countries when released in 1975. When Donna got her US contract with Casablanca Records, President Neil Bogart asked for an extended version of the song, because he played the song at a party and guest kept asking him to play the song over. Thus, pretty much the birth of the extended single. It was 16:50 and took the entire first side of her Casablanca debut album. The song also cause a stir in the US with Rev Jesse Jackson and PUSH asking radio stations to ban the song in the US. The song did climb to #2 (for 2 weeks) on the Billboard Hot 100 on Valentines Day 1976. The album and the single quickly sold over a million copies each in the US. Yes this song is a British Pop music show, called Top of the Pops. I agree the dancing and presentation really wasn't in line with the recording, but this was 1975. This album was her first international release, she was before this time just being released in selected European countries, she was a domestic European artist.

I agree about the dancers, they look like they are from outer space! I remember loving Donna Summers songs & sounds & the long version takes up a lot of space on the album 🥰 She gave a voice for women to not be afraid of sensuality. I remember friends being somewhat shocked when they first heard this song 🎵 but eventually they just grooved to it & danced & danced 😁
Donna Summers & Gloria Gaynor were very popular r&b / disco 70’s singers who overtook the Motown era & filled it with females singing sensual, sexy music 💥
I am sure there were many parents & grandparents & church goers not wanting their young kids to listen to this music…too sexy !!

There are several mixes of this song. This video is using the album version mix, which is excellent, but.... it is the 7" single (45rpm) version that has the added "UMPH" that makes it a great dance tune, and I highly recommend checking it out. Here's the link... ruclips.net/video/Xyb4dCKjosw/видео.html . Also the 7" single has two different edits, a shorter edit on one side, and the longer edit on the other side, which is what the link goes to.

The version in this video isn't taken from the album full-length track. The beginning vocals are different from the album intro. I checked out the link and that's definitely an edit from the album and most likely the U.S. release. I believe the single version used here is the original one released in the Netherlands.

Donna Summer: My all time favorite female singer and favorite singer overall. If you think this version is sensual, the album version is even more so. And, the one I have on my channel is even more so than the album. It's called "Impassioned Lockdown Mix". Make sure you've got the A/C on while listening to it. LOL.

My mom loved this song, and one summer, she played it loud, windows open, so that it wafted over the dunes where we lived, or perhaps it undulated, it lured. It's a longer song than this. I was about 15, and was embarrassed, even though I liked Donna Summer songs, had learned to dance Disco style to her songs. But, Mom, eesh! I think it is funny now. And also, go Mom!

Bruh, you're watching the wrong video. I agree with you about these back up dancers in this video. They have no soul for this soulful, funk song. YOU MUST SEE HER ON AMERICAN BANDSTAND OR SOULTRAIN PERFORMING THE SONG IN 1976. Yes, it was banned in several countries. There is a very, very sexual 16+ minutes version that made her a star.
