I got a crazy idea that is probably silly, but hear me out. If thieves are stealing the merchandise, why not arrest and lock up the thieves?

I visited this store out of curiosity. Most of it is just open floor space. Picking up your choices from behind a counter reminds me of the original drug and grocery stores that didn’t allow self service. Those old stores at least had character and charm and sometimes a cafe and refreshment counter.
Can't put a cafe. Black people will rob the cafe.
Locked up all the valuable commodities, yet the employee has no visible safe place to escape violent criminals.
Priorities.
Amazon says “keep at it demons, we love what you are doing for our business”. Baby mamas so proud of their chidren.
How sad that this is what our society has become. Let the police do there job and the courts stop letting these criminals back on the streets.

That's fantastic hope all stores start implementing procedures like that so the ghetto has nowhere to go loot and steal . They might actually have to get a job and pay for things like the rest of us .

It's not going to solve anything. They will just start cutting parts off your boat, car, house, bicycle, or any other property you own instead. I know in my area, people cutting catalytic converters off of every car and truck in a street, or a even an entire parking lot, is pretty common now. Even in broad daylight. 20 years ago when I was a kid, it was common that when the sun comes up there would be several cars or trucks parked on the streets that had wheels stolen off of them overnight. Also recently, people steal Hyundais because they are easy to steal. The whole point of law enforcement is to protect hard working Americans from criminals and when they fail, it's already past time to move because the city is already on the path to becoming the next Detroit with street after street of abandoned houses that nobody wants to live in.
Working with tellers and cashiers across a clear barrier seemed strange at first. But it became the new norm both before and after the CoVid pandemic.
Nowadays with the barricaded and locked up store merchandise, this way of shopping at brick and mortar stores will also become the new norm. Along with shopping online.
Perhaps even more thefts could be prevented in the future by having office space on the first 2 or 3 floors, and retail stores above the offices.
Meanwhile, stores remaining on the first floor could have doors that could only be opened from the outside with a debit card or by an employee.
That one lady, " this is reactive," would love to hear her "more proactive approach." It sounds like she wants to let them keep stealing so the price of toothpaste can get even more astronomical.

@barbaranymiel3089 have you been to the north side of chicago I promise as far as homeless outside sleeping tents. can't do that where I'm from south side. people go to Cali when homeless because it's warm all year. just like in Chicago people come up north because it is safer all races. I'm up north right now I can go outside and see a gang of white and black clucks sleeping on bus stops won't see that in my hood
@@colihon3552 Yes, Indeed, I’m from Chicago and grew up in the Lake View area ( North Side) not far from DePaul University. That side seemed the best, even when I was growing up. South Side, Southwest and West side can be pretty rough. Although I will admit we did have problems with the gangs every now & then. But I hear since they let inmates out, it could all be dodgy.😢
Thieves will just wait & rob people leaving store with their groceries.

It seems like an easier solution would be to harden the entrances/exits. I've seen a few stores that require you to scan a code from your receipt to open the exit. That would probably go a long way to slowing down shoplifters and reducing the amount of theft.
Nah, the shoplifters will just barrel past whoever is nearby or heck, bring tools to smash through any hardened exit.
@funkytraveler,The easier solution would be lock their A$$ up,get a job and make them pay back with interest that would be a real solution instead of cuddling the thieves.
Notice: The good thing about this is that more employees just may be needed. Less self-checkout machines.

This has become a nationwide problem and the only way this gets fixed is if policies are put in place that favor retailers, not the criminals. Right now, criminals have the advantage. They can go into a store, steal what they want and if they get hurt during any sort of struggle, the company gets sued and that employee loses his job. Take that right away from these thieves. If they steal $100 worth of stuff, make it a felony and their rights to sue following any injuries are gone. These are desperate times which calls for desperate solutions.
Congress is made up of lawyers and these are the people that vote for them.

Just put the whole store behind a counter and let the customer use an app to choose what items they want then have a picker pick the items for the customer. Of course this will be at selected neighborhoods.

They need to become "High tech" at the Walgreens on Armitage and Milwaukee. I've seen 2 fights break out inside the store. There was this one dirty old woman who used to sleep in the photo or pharmacy area. I almost threw up because she smelled horrible. I had to step over some rummy who was passed out on the entrance/exit area.
So we're turning back the clock to have the price items placed behind the counter, but high tech in that you can now "order" your items like at a restaurant.

Perhaps having the first 2 or 3 floors designated for office space would help to reduce merchandise theft. Retail stores could be above the offices.
Meanwhile, existing stores on the ground level could have doors that would open from the outside only with a customer card, debit or credit card or by an employee.
They might as well close the doors to the public and do online orders only. The pharmacy will just have to be drive-thru only.

Seriously. Shoplifting is so rampant across the country you'd think they'd finally put plainclothes cops outside the stores and arrest the shoplifters when they exit.
Not enough cops sadly. I’ve spoken to couple officers/sheriffs/state troopers and all say they need more help and no many applicants like before due to the risks especially in Chicago. Many move out the city and work in suburbs. Chicago is much worse. Walmart is moving out of Chicago to much shoplifting and no profit.

They have a store like this in England. People talk about it being inconvience but I've already seen this in the health and beauty sections of Walmart in some locations. I was pissed the first time I encountered the fact that I had to ask an associate just to get deodorant. 😢
