  • Networks of organized thieves are going after smaller ticket items like laundry detergent, toothpaste, and deodorant, leaving retailers like Walgreens, CVS and Target taking increasing losses. The shoplifted items are then sold online or at local flea markets.

I agree … it’s sad that it’s come down to this . These corporations reporting record profits meanwhile some ppl have to choose between food or insulin. I don’t condone theft at all however I am saying they started it with corporate greed . And the government allowing them to price gouge the public and slap a red now I’m on it and blame it on inflation. It’s greed , and some ppl chose to fight back . The sad part is it affects all of us . They are corporate thieves and suffer no consequences , but if the ppl do it then it’s a crime … that’s pretty darn ironic if you ask me …

I remember when I was going around to many stores in GA and SC, I came across some smaller ones in the lower income areas who had everything behind counters and windows. If you wanted something the clerk would get it and bring it to the register, so you had to pay for it before it was handed over to you. They had gotten tired of being robbed when they weren't looking. It worked for them.

Merchandise is stolen, then returned to the store for a “store credit” that store credit is then listed on EBAY. I worked at Linens N Things. I get the store owner can't take the stuff being stolen back, while the perp is stealing it. But if the owner went to the flea market, I'd think they could steal $950 of the goods there and take it back to their store?
And you'd think these stores would figure out a way to block entry to their stores goods, and have their clerks get the goods a customer wants, bring it to a counter, and after payment, pass the item under the counter via a drawer. Or have a way to remotely lock the doors and not let 'customers' out unless they show a receipt?

Not that it was ok to diamond dash a resturaunt but rather that all these corporate places do is create generic mediocre food. Theres no heart or soul at a fuckin dominoes and it bewilders me when I see them in business.
But now seeing your comment I change my mind. These big corporations could be accused of having cheap labor but atleast it’s something. CURRENTLY, the best we got at the bottom is minimum wage and perhaps for some people thats their current LIVELIHOOD!
So to respond to your comment, whats the alternative to shopping at a big corporate store? Perhaps, shop at a smaller store? Cause currently, shoplifting at corporate stores WILL cause them to shut down thus laying off dozens of workers -THAT I KNOW YOU MUST CARE ABOUT- thus leaving NO merchandise to steal in the first place.

Hi: If you are from outside of California this story never mentioned Proposition 47. Prop 47 came from George Gascon and San Francisco. It raised the theft limit to $950 before the crime becomes a felony. It eliminated theft with a prior, which means every time a person steals it is the first time, it made possession of stolen property and second degree burglary misdemeanor (cite and release depending on jurisdiction) offenses. While it was sold to the public by academics and journalists as a way for people to get back onto their feet and was meant to relieve the burden-weight of conviction...in reality it's nothing more than turning a blind eye to crime. Yes, retail theft is down. That means they've lost confidence in the criminal justice system and don't want to waste their time waiting for a purposeless report. Mayor Breed knows better but was also convinced the solution to a problem is to do nothing.

All the retailers should raise prices on each item up $1000 and then have coupons at the register you scan that takes $1000 off each item. Then, if you steal one item, it meets the requirement to prosecute since it was $1000 on the shelf tag.
